Northwood ? Wilma Bernice Helgeland, 91, Northwood, died Saturday, December 29, 2012, at the Lutheran Retirement Home in Northwood. A celebration of life service for Wilma will be held at 10:00 A.M. Saturday, July 6, 2013, at the Conner Colonial Chapel, 1008 First Ave. South, Northwood, with Pastor Barbara Wills officiating. Inurnment will be held in the Sunset Rest Cemetery in Northwood. Visitation will be held one hour prior to service time on Saturday at the church. According to her wishes, cremation has taken place.

Wilma Bernice (Koerner) Helgeland was born on March 9, 1921, in Le Mars, Iowa, the daughter of Fred and Deane (Wiersma) Koerner. Her baptism took place on June 12, 1921. Her early education took place in Alton and George, Iowa. Following completion of high school, she attended Iowa State Teacher?s College in Cedar Falls for two years and graduated from Drake University. Wilma was united in marriage to Kermit Helgeland on December 25, 1942, in George, Iowa. They were the parents of two sons Charles and Douglas. They farmed the Helgeland farm until 1959 when they moved into Northwood. Wilma taught school in Manly and Northwood for 40 years until her retirement in 1983. Wilma was a faithful member of First Lutheran Church in Northwood, served on the Northwood Public Library Board for several years and was an avid reader. She also was a member of Chapter E.S. PEO and the Twenties Club. Kermit and Wilma spent several winters in Arizona finally moving there in 1989, and returned to Northwood in 2004.

Those thankful for sharing her life are her sons; Charles (Anne) Helgeland of Franklin, TN, and Douglas (Clara) Helgeland of Northwood; four grandchildren; Scott (Stephanie) Helgeland of Jaspers, NY, Sarah Stratton of Monticello, AR, Cinda (Tim) Clay of Naperville, Il, and Vance Helgeland of Northwood; five great-grandchildren; her sister, Dorothy Brandt and her husband Melvin Kerr of Des Moines; her sister-in-law, Dorothy Koerner, of Groveland, CA; as well as many nieces, nephews, and other extended family members and friends.

Wilma was preceded in death by her parents; her husband of 64 years, Kermit; her brother, Vance Koerner; and her brother-in-law, Donald Brandt. The family would like to suggest that those wishing to give a memorial in her memory may wish to consider a memorial contribution be made to the Northwood Public Library.
