SHEFFIELD | Millie Rabey, 81, of Sheffield, passed away Tuesday, Dec. 3, 2013, at Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held 11 a.m. Friday at the First United Methodist Church, Sheffield, with Pastor Sandy Gobeli presiding. Interment will be at Hillside Cemetery, Sheffield. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at First United Methodist Church in Sheffield.
Mildred Rose Harter was born Jan. 8, 1932, in Logan, Iowa, a daughter of Frank and Rachel Harter. She graduated from Logan High School before attending Iowa State Teacher’s College (UNI).
Millie met Charles “Chuck” Rabey at a dance in the fall of 1952 and continued the dance for over 57 years after their marriage Aug. 16, 1953.
Millie taught elementary school for a few years and substitute taught from time to time. In 1964 they moved to Sheffield where she became an active member of the First United Methodist Church, serving in many capacities and holding several offices, including financial secretary.
Millie provided day care in her home and worked in the school kitchen as well as continuing as a substitute teacher. She also worked at the Sheffield Hardware Store, Sukup Manufacturing, the Petal Peddler and Forever Yours Flowers and Gifts.
Millie’s life of service to others was also reflected in the work done with her social group, The Coffee Ladies. She enjoyed traveling, playing cards, and being with friends and family.
Millie is survived by her son: Bob (Christene) Rabey, State Center; daughter: Joelle (David) Henderson, Altoona; son: Jeff (Annette) Rabey, Bennington, Neb.; daughter-in-law: Cindy Rabey, Sheffield; 12 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren; sisters: Lillian (Jim) Jensen, and Dorothy Reuland; brother: Howard (Beverly) Harter; special companion: Delbert Schroeder; and a host of friends and loved ones.
Preceding Millie in eternal rest are her husband, Chuck; son, Jerry; brothers, Earnest and David Knauss; sister, Grace VanCleave; and her parents.
