Du Wayne Frederick Klein was born November 18, 1922, near Lone Rock, Iowa, son of Frederick N. and Florence Marie (Murphy) Klein. He grew up in rural Burt and rural Algona graduating from Algona High School in 1942. As a young boy during the depression years, he was “farmed out” to earn his room and board. He did many of the farm chores including milking cows, field work, breaking horses, cutting fire wood, and delivering milk for Grandpa Brown with a horse and wagon. While in high school in Burt and Algona he was on the wrestling squad.
Du Wayne was united in marriage to Kathryn Margaret Haag on October 11, 1942, in Webster City, Iowa. He served in the United States Army from December 1942 until November 1945. They then settled in Algona where he worked in the meat department of Hoods Grocery. He built the family home where he lived for 65 years.
Du Wayne owned and operated Klein~s Farm Supply for 22 years. He had a strong work ethic and was always willing to help his customers. He loved having a display with the duckling slide, Wayne Feed samples and farm hardware at the the Kossuth County Fair. Brightly colored chicks were always a special feature, given away free in the store at Easter time. He looked forward to hosting the annual Customer Appreciation Day with ham sandwiches and all the trimmings. He enjoyed fishing, woodworking, playing cards, camping, helping others, and being with his family.
He and Kathryn spent some winters in Texas and Florida with family. They also loved being in the mountains of Utah near their two grandsons and six great-grandchildren. They called Grandpa their “Genius Grandpa” because he could help them solve their problems and would fix anything for them.
He was active in the First Presbyterian Church. He belonged to the VFW Post 2541 and the Haag-Turner American Legion Post # 90, all in Algona.
Du Wayne died Thursday, October 3, 2013 in Winter Park, Florida at the age of 90. He had lived there with his daughter Ginny Johnson since November 2012.
Du Wayne will be dearly missed by his son, Dr. Larry and wife Jean Keith Klein of Sun City, Arizona; a daughter, Virginia Johnson of Winter Park, Florida; grandsons, Keith (Barb) Klein and Dr. Kyle (Trudee) Klein all of Brigham City, Utah; six great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews and sister-in-law, Helen Klein of Algona.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his beloved wife, Kathryn on March 26, 2011; a son-in-law, Daryl Johnson; a sister, Marjorie Reding; and three brothers, Dallas, Jerry, and Vernon Klein.
