Virginia was born July 28, 1924, in Charles City, Iowa, the daughter of Harry Henry and Rosinia (Kaya) Rabb. She graduated from Charles City High School in 1942. Following graduation, Virginia worked for the War Department in Washington, D.C., from 1942-1945, during World War II.
Virginia was united in marriage to Clifton E. “Butch” Nickerson on Feb. 1, 1946, in Charles City, and in 1949 she had her one and only daughter, Janese.
Over the years Virginia worked in residential and commercial cleaning, until she retired at the age of 83. She also spent countless hours volunteering at her granddaughter’s day care, being everyone’s favorite grandma.
Virginia enjoyed spending time with her family — especially her grandchildren and great grandchildren. Back in the day, she was an accomplished roller-skater in Washington, D.C., and she delighted in telling wartime tales. There was always a Sunday meal at Grandma’s house, and she enjoyed sewing, tending to her yard and flower garden, taking care of her cat “Chancy,” and traveling to Las Vegas. She was a member of St. James Lutheran Church.
Virginia was a hard worker with a great sense of humor and always the life of the party. She will be deeply missed by her loving family and all who knew her.
Virginia is survived by two grandchildren: Kim Tilkes and husband, Aaron of Mason City, and Kris Wade and husband, Jon of Katy, Texas; seven great-grandchildren: Bailey, Brady, Bobbi and Brandi Tilkes of Mason City, and Luke, Libby and Liza Wade of Katy; one nephew: Greg Snere of Mason City; and ex-son-in-law, Bruce Wing of Cleveland, Minn.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband in 1984; her daughter, Janese Wing in 1999; and two siblings: Anita Snere and Douglas Rabb.
Arrangements are with Major Erickson Funeral Home & Crematory, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave.,
