Mary Jane Haverly was born December 8, 1940, in Rockwell, Iowa, the daughter of John and Gladys (Jacob) Barragy. She attended Sacred Heart School in Rockwell where she graduated in 1958. Mary Jane went on to attend La James Beauty College and graduated from there in April of 1959. She began working at Hallwood Beauty Salon in Mason City.
On July 11, 1960, Mary Jane was united in marriage to Paul Haverly at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Rockwell. After their marriage she had her own salon in her home and later worked as an aide at the Good Samaritan Society and the Kossuth County Home. Mary Jane was one of the original organizers of the annual Algona Community Thanksgiving dinner and started the Blue Star Home program.
She enjoyed cooking and baking and later published a cookbook of all of her own favorite recipes. Mary Jane was a past member of the Catholic Daughters of the Americas Court St. Cecelia #283 and Legion of Mary. She was also a charter member of the Kossuth County Hairdressers, serving as the first president for two years. She also was involved in the Good Samaritan Society Auxiliary, Kossuth Regional Health Center Auxiliary and the VIP Club.
Mary Jane died Saturday, January 5, 2013, at her home in Algona. She was 72.
Left to cherish her memory are her husband, Paul Haverly of Algona; daughter, Marie Haverly of Winnebago, MN; son, Mark Haverly of Titonka; foreign exchange daughter, America Soto formerly of Rengo, Chile, now living in Ida Grove; grandson, Brandon Hansen; sister, Jeannie and husband Al Stein of Lansing, several nieces and nephews and numerous friends. She was preceded in death by her father, John in 1964 and a brother, Jerry in 1975.
The Haverly family would like to extend a special “Thank You” to the many helpers and caregivers that have helped care for Mary Jane and her family the past few years.
