BUFFALO CENTER — Willy Hassebroek, age 68, of Buffalo Center, passed away Friday, Feb. 22, 2013, in Buffalo Center.

A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, Feb. 26, at 11 a.m. at the First Reformed Church, Buffalo Center, with Pastor Bill Peake officiating.

Inurnment will be held at a later date at Olena Mound Cemetery, Buffalo Center. Military honors will be presented by the Buffalo Center American Legion/V.F.W. Color Guard.

His visitation will be held today, Monday, at Winter Funeral Home, Buffalo Center, from 5 until 7 p.m.

Wilbert “Willy” Dean Hassebroek was born in Buffalo Center, Iowa, to Marvin and Margaret Hassebroek on Sept. 1, 1944. He left the area at age 17 to join the Army after his father’s passing. After being stationed overseas, he returned to Buffalo Center in 1966.

He then joined in marriage to Nancy Anderson on Feb. 24, 1968. To this union there were four children born: Jill who died in infancy, Jeff, Daniel and Jane. Willy and Nancy have lived on their current acreage since 1971, where they raised their family.

In his earlier years he worked at Winnebago Industries and took an adventure and worked for Boeing in Seattle, Wash., but quickly returned back home. There were many business ventures that Willy embarked on. This included, J&J Livestock, Hassebroek Trucking and family farming.

He had many other involvements in the community which included starting the Buffalo Center Development Corp. and Bison Limited to bring new business to town. He was a member of the American Legion in Buffalo Center and took pride in his country and loved his flag. He was also an avid bowler, snowmobiler, trap shooter and card player in his earlier days.

Later he became a grandpa and enjoyed spoiling his grandchildren through toys, trips and shopping trips to Weaver’s. He also enjoyed spending much of his spare time with his fellow coffee drinkers solving “the world’s problems” at the “roundtable.” He enjoyed many trips with his wife and visiting longtime friends all around the states.

Wilbert was proceeded in death by his parents, Marvin and Margaret; his daughter, Jill Marie; and brother, Bob Hassebroek.

He is survived by wife, Nancy Hassebroek; sons, Jeff Hassebroek of Dike, Daniel Hassebroek (special friend Trisha Jobe) of Buffalo Center; daughter, Jane Nelson (Nathan) of Forest City; grandchildren, Emily, Drew, Adam and Carter Hassebroek of Dike, Katie, Justin and Kevin Hassebroek of Thompson, Lilian and Alexis Nelson of Forest City; siblings, Marlyn (Ruth) Hassebroek, Shirley (Mark) Eisenbarth, and Dennis (Nola) Hassebroek, Elaine (Roger) Wilcox.
