MASON CITY — Alex Preftakes, 88, of Mason City, died on Friday, May 30, 2014, at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa.

A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. with a one hour prior visitation on Tuesday, June 3, 2014, at Fullerton Funeral Home, 123 2nd St SE, Mason City, IA, with the Reverend Keith Scott from Wesley United Methodist Church officiating. Inurnment will follow at Memorial Park Cemetery.

Those planning an expression of sympathy may wish to consider memorials to Hospice of North Iowa or Wesley United Methodist Church.

Alex Preftakes was born on January 1, 1926, in Albert Lea, MN, to Peter and Harriet Preftakes. He moved to Mason City during his childhood and graduated in 1943 from Mason City High School. He joined the Marine Corps at age 17 and served during WWII.

On August 23, 1954, Alex was united in marriage to Phyliss Wagner. To this union two children were born. They resided together in Mason City.

Alex worked for 24 years as a clerk for the US Postal Service. He was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church and the VFW in Mason City.

In his free time he enjoyed golfing, watching sports and spending time with family. He was an avid Iowa Hawkeyes and Minnesota Twins fan. Alex and Phyllis both loved golfing and spent many years golfing together in couples tournaments and with friends. They belonged to the golf course in Rockford for several years and golfed regularly after work. Alex will be missed by those who loved and knew him.

Those left to cherish his memory are his wife Phyliss of almost 60 years; daughter Jean (Norman) Nordstrom of Novi, Michigan; granddaughter Nicole Nordstrom of Grand Rapids, Michigan; nephew Nick (Renee) of Oklahoma City, Ok; and niece Pam Wingrod of Philadelphia, Pa.

He was preceded in death by his parents, son Michael Preftakes in 1999, brother James and his wife Dolly Preftakes and sister Demetra.
