KANAWHA | Berniece Synneva Barracks, 93, of Kanawha, passed away Tuesday, June 24, 2014, at Hancock County Memorial Hospital in Britt.

Funeral services for Berniece Barracks will be held on Friday, June 27, 2014, at 10 a.m. at the Kanawha Lutheran Church, 124 West 4th Street, in Kanawha with Pastors Char and Geoffrey White officiating. Burial will be at Corwith Cemetery in Corwith.

Visitation will be on Thursday, June 26, 2014, from 5 to 7 p.m. at Ewing Funeral Home, 118 East 2nd Street in Kanawha, and will continue one hour prior to the funeral service at the church.

Berniece, the eldest daughter of Mons and Cecelia Omvig, was born December 26, 1920, in Kanawha, Iowa. She had one brother, Jay.

After high school, Berniece attended the University of Iowa and received her RN degree in 1942. After receiving her degree, she enlisted in the US Army. During WW II she served in the Women’s Army Corp as a nurse and First Lieutenant in the European Theatre, 316th Station Hospital (England).

On September 8, 1947, she was united in marriage to Robert Glenn Barracks of Corwith. They had four children, Mary, Roxanne, Bobby and Ron.

While raising her children, Berniece practiced her nursing at Mercy Hospital in Mason City and the Belmond Hospital. Following that, she became the Hancock County Public Health Nurse, a job she enjoyed immensely until she retired.

Berniece loved spending time with her family, fishing, needle work, cribbage and reading.

She was so proud of her military service and she was very grateful to be included in one of the Honor Flights in 2009.

Berniece is survived by daughter Mary and her husband Mark of Minneapolis, Minnesota, daughter Roxanne and her husband Dale of Ames, Iowa, and son Ron and his wife Donna of Longmont, Colorado. She had six grandchildren who she adored, Eric and wife Julie Sorensen of St. Paul, Minnesota, Claire Sorensen of Minneapolis, Minnesota, Elliot Thompson and fiancée Lyndsay Nissen of Ames, Iowa, Alex Thompson of Denver, Colorado, and Rachael and Reese Barracks of Longmont, Colorado. Last but not least, two beautiful great-grandsons, Wyatt and Henry Sorensen of St. Paul, Minnesota.
