Visitation and time of memories and sharing will begin at 10 a.m. Saturday at the church.

David Hinman was born on Feb. 18, 1955, in Belmond, the son of Stephen N. and Hazel (Tegland) Hinman. He grew up on the family farm in rural Belmond and attended and graduated from Belmond High School in the 1970s. He then graduated from the ISU Winter Ag program.

Following a short period of farming with his brother, Dave~s ambitions and adventurous side led him into the field of aviation where he began a lifelong career as an airline pilot. He was known to have flown almost anything, from private to freight planes, air ambulances in Iowa earlier on and eventually he became a full-time commercial airlines pilot. Dave held an A & P license.

In 1988 he moved out west to work for the West Air/United Express based in Seattle. He was in the last class at Reno Air in March 1988 and flew the MD80 for American Airlines at SFO until 2003. He eventually was forced to retire from American due to health issues from injuries in a vehicle accident. He was a first officer at the time of his retirement.

Dave had a lifelong love and enjoyment of music. He was very talented and had shared his vocal gifts over the years through his involvement in barbershop and other groups. He loved to be in the outdoors, including hiking, camping, and climbing some of the highest peaks in the Cascades and treks up Mount St. Helens and Mount Rainier. His courage and fearless nature also took him on “human kite” flights, a parachute jump, and in earlier years he looked forward to the speed and excitement of snowmobiling. Dave was a Minnesota Vikings fan and supported several animal rescue organizations.

He truly enjoyed all life had to offer and looked forward to the many journeys it took him on. He was a man who deserved recognitions for his many accomplishments, but was never one to worry about public accolades. He loved times spent with his family and his many close friends, and fellow Airlines professionals. He was widely known and liked by the SFO and former QQ pilot groups.

He will be remembered by his brother, Stephen A. (Sharion) Hinman and their family, Michele (Jason) Miltenberger and their children, and Neal (Jessica) Hinman and children, all of Belmond; brother, Wayne (Clara) Hinman, Clarksville, and their children, Chad (Colleen) Hinman and children, all of Dayton, Ohio, Tony Hinman, Blue Grass, and Maryann Hinman, Cedar Falls; and brother, Don Hinman, Tokyo, Japan.
