Mildred Regina Adams was born April 23, 1921, in West Bend, Iowa, the daughter of Nick and Lena (Mersch) Schmalen. She grew up and attended school in West Bend graduating from the West Bend High School in 1938, as the class valedictorian. Mildred then went to attend cosmetology school in Spencer, Iowa, and upon completion began working at Irene~s Beauty Shop in Algona. On February 28, 1946, Mildred was united in marriage to Garmon Adams at St. Cecelia Catholic Church in Algona. They lived in Algona for two years before moving to a farm near Whittemore in 1948, where they raised their children. Upon all the children being in high school Mildred went back to work at the Kehler McAdams Clothing Store in Algona for 10 years. Mildred enjoyed spending time with all her family, as well as, reading, sewing, quilting, gardening, canning and playing cards. She was an active member of St. Michael~s Parish as a member of the Rosary Society, Catholic Daughters of the Americas and was also a member of the Whittemore Women~s Club. Mildred died Friday, September 12, 2014, at the Algona Manor Care Center in Algona, Iowa. She was 93. Survivors include her husband, Garmon Adams of Algona; children, Linda and Tom Bindner of Marcus; Mark and Elizabeth Adams of Marshalltown; Karen and Bill Behrens of St. Louis, MO; Barb and Bill Thompson of Des Moines; Nancy Adams of West Des Moines; 11 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; a sister, Juanita Yoch of West Bend; a brother, Edward Schmalen of West Bend; sisters-in-law, Donna Adams of Cedar Rapids and Marjorie Schmalen of Emmetsburg and several nieces and nephews.
