MASON CITY | Donald E. Leake, 95, of Mason City, died Friday, Sept. 5, 2014, at his home.
A funeral service will be held 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 10, 2014, at Hogan-Bremer-Moore Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E., Mason City, with Pastor Mark Hicks officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, Mason City, where full military honors will be conducted by Mason City Veterans.
The family will greet friends one hour prior to the service Wednesday at the funeral chapel.
Donald E. Leake was born April 2, 1919, at Medford, Wisconsin, a son of H.L. and Daisy (Dawson) Leake. He married Marie Hackbarth on March 20, 1948, at the Little Brown Church, Nashua, Iowa.
He attended Mason City schools and was a graduate of Mason City High School. Don served in the U.S. Army during World War II, receiving the Purple Heart after being wounded in Italy.
After his military service, Don returned to Mason City where he did carpentry with his father and continued to work as a carpenter well into his later years, working with Ken Petersen Builders for many years until retiring.
He enjoyed tracing his family history and had a passion for genealogy. He liked to garden and keep bees on his acreage.
Don is survived by his grandchildren, Steve (Amanda) Leake, Manly, Bryon Leake, Austin, Minnesota, Erin Leake and friend, Robert St. John, Britt; nephew, Harlan (Maureen) Leake, Mason City; niece, Virginia Smith, Mason City.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Marie; a son, Paul; brothers, Jim, Harlan and Harold; and a sister, Mabel.
