Kenneth “Ken” Swant, 73, of Charles City died Wednesday, September 3, 2014 at the Floyd County Medical Center in Charles City.

A memorial service for Ken Swant will be held 2:00 p.m. Saturday, September 6, 2014 at St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church in Charles City. Pastor Dennis Niezwaag will officiate. Inurnment will be in Riverside Cemetery at Charles City.

Friends may call at St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, September 5, 2014 and one hour prior to the memorial service on Saturday at the church.

Kenneth Wayne Swant, the son of Wayne and Mayme (Meyers) Swant, was born July 15, 1941 in Charles City, Iowa. He was raised in Charles City and attended school graduating from Charles City High School in 1959. After graduation, Ken enlisted in the Navy and was stationed in Pearl Harbor and San Diego during the time of his service. Ken returned home and began working for Collins Radio in Cedar Rapids before going back to San Diego and working for General Dynamics. In 1971, Ken came back to Charles City, married his wife of 42 years Connie and started Circle K Communications, Inc. which they owned and operated for 30 years. While running the business he received the Top Volume Dealer 1987-1992 from the E.F. Johnson Co. which was for national recognition of sales. The business is in its 42nd year, now owned by his daughter Tammy and her husband Dan.

Ken was a member of St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church where he served on several committees and loved preparing the Wednesday night dinners with the youth. Food, faith, family and friends were his life. He was a member of the Elks Lodge and also the Lions Club where he was a Past President. Ken also was active as a Little League coach for his two boys, Brad and Terry, when they were playing baseball. He loved taking his children fishing when they were young, in his later years he also enjoyed collecting coins and sharing his knowledge of them.

Living family members include his wife of 42 years Connie of Charles City; four children: Tammy (Dan) Elthon of Charles City, Lori Phelps of Homosassa, Florida, Brad Swant of Cedar Rapids and Terry (Ana) Swant of Rockford; six grandchildren: Andy (fiancée Abbey Hartman) Elthon, Matt (Angie) Elthon, Shaun Swant, Justin Swant, Nicholas Swant and Harley Jane Phelps; two great-grandchildren: Ethan Blankenship and Ben Elthon; mother-in-law Marjorie Pierson of Charles City; along with other family members and a host of friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents Wayne and Mayme Swant and his father-in-law Leonard Pierson.
