Jim Paul Romer was born, April 14, 1938, in Algona, Iowa, the son of John and Verna (Beck) Romer. He grew up in Algona where he also attended school. After his schooling he went to work at the Council Oak Store, which became National Foods and then Fareway.

On August 16, 1969, Jim was united in marriage to Judy Coleman in Algona. Following their marriage they lived in Algona and Jim continued working at Fareway before leaving to start driving a truck for Bituminous. He also joined the Iowa National Guard and served his country for 10 years. Jim later went to work for Hormel Foods and remained there, retiring in 2001.

Jim was very active in the Algona community, serving on the Algona Fire Department for 42 years, the Cemetery Board for over 33 years, Kossuth County Fair Board, was a member of the Kossuth County Shrine Club and the Masonic Lodge. He also enjoyed fishing and doing whatever needed to be done in the community.

He very much enjoyed gardening and worked in many garden centers around the area over the years most recently at Garden~s Gate in Algona. Jim was a member of the Minnesota Dahlia Society and enjoyed showing the flowers he grew, at the Iowa State Fair, Minnesota State Fair and the Clay County Fair for 49 years. He was also a judge at many flower shows.

Jim died Sunday, August 31, 2014, at the Kossuth Regional Health Center in Algona. He was 76.

Survivors include his wife, Judy Romer of Algona; son, James Romer and wife Beth of Ames. Also surviving are sisters-in-law, Marlene Eastman of Irvington; Geri (Jade) Oelmann of Ackley; nieces and nephews, Deanna (Mike) Clayton of Ames; Loren (Laura) Potter of Lincoln, ND; Mary Potter of Ames; Mark (Jeanne) Eastman of Omaha, NE; and several great-nieces and great-nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Marlene Romer and brother-in-law, Toby Eastman.
