Funeral services for Eugene R. Steere, 87, of Greene, will be 10:30 a.m., Friday, September 5, 2014, at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Greene with Pastor Gary Hatcher officiating. Burial will be in the Rose Hill Cemetery, Greene.
Visitation will be 5:00 p.m. – 7:30 p.m., Thursday, September 4, 2014, at Retz Funeral Home, 519 N. First St. Greene, followed by a Public Prayer Service at 7:30 p.m. Visitation will continue at the church one hour before services on Friday.
Eugene Roger Steere was born on November 29, 1926, on the family farm in Coldwater Township, Butler County, Iowa, the eleventh child of William and Sophia (Drogemuller) Steere and passed away on September 1, 2014, at his residence in Greene. He received his education in the Coldwater Township Country School # 7. Following school Gene worked on the family farm.
On January 28, 1951, Eugene was united in marriage to Anna Mae Siemons at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Greene. The couple moved to their farm on March 1, 1951, there they made their home and raised six children. He and his family are members of St. Peter Lutheran Church in Greene.
Gene was an avid spectator at his grandchildren’s sporting events, enjoyed auctions, watching and feeding birds, attending to his big gold fish and watching “The Price is Right” on T.V. He made many trips to interstate pond with his grandchildren to fish and on the way home would take them out for sandwiches. Gene took his family to various spots in Minnesota for Labor Day fishing trips for the past 24 years. He looked forward to weekly Sunday dinners on the farm surrounded by family. Gene was devoted family man, a supportive friend, and a kind individual whose sense of humor and big smile will be missed.
He is survived by his faithful wife of 63 years, Anna Mae; six children: Doug (Faith) Steere, Stout, John (Cynthia) Steere, Clarksville, Jean Ann (Dennis) Wedeking, Greene, Robin (Russ) Kock, Greene, Jacque (Neal) Nordmeyer, Greene, Jason (Lisa) Steere, Clarksville; grandchildren: Jessica (Kevin), Joshua, Kara, Bridget(Adam), Nathan (Nikki), Trace, Gretchen(Matt), Ryan (Holly), Lucas (Alesha), Reese, Riley, Ramsey, Rainy, Levi, Landon (Susan), Logan, Layton, Bailey (fiancé Alex) and Tyron; 13 great-grandchildren; many friends.
Gene is preceded in death by his parents, 4 sisters: Leona, Lela, Sophia, Dorothy; 6 brothers: John, William, Leo, Henry, Vernon, brother in infancy.
