Harold “Doc” Van Essen, Jr., 88, of Charles City, died Sunday, August 3, 2014, at the Floyd County Medical Center in Charles City.

A funeral Mass for Doc Van Essen will be held 10:30 a.m. Thursday, August 7, 2014, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. Reverend Gary Mayer will celebrate the Mass. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery at Charles City. Military honors will be conducted by the Charles City Ceremonial Unit.

Friends may call at the Hauser Funeral Home from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, August 6, 2014, where a Scripture Service will begin at 6:30 p.m. Visitation will continue Wednesday at the church an hour prior to the Mass.

Harold Eugene Van Essen, Jr., was born February 8, 1926, at Eau Claire, Wisc., the son of Harold and Hazel (Hanrahan) Van Essen, Sr. He graduated in 1944 from Mason City High School and from Mason City Junior College (now North Iowa Community College) and Iowa State. Harold proudly served in the United States Navy during World War II in the Pacific Theatre. He was a chemist for over 36 years beginning work with Dr. John Salsbury at Salsbury Laboratories. Doc was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Veterans of Foreign Wars, American Legion and American Chemical Society. His interests included fishing of all types, watching Iowa State sports and the Green Bay Packers.

Living family members include a brother, George (Marcele) Van Essen of Ventura, Calif.; nephews, Michael Van Essen of Los Angeles, Calif. and Joseph (Terry) Van Essen of Santa Clarita, Calif.; nieces, Marcia Bowman and Corinne Van Essen both of Ventura, Calif.; two great nephews; a great niece; godson, Jerome (Lou) Rogers of Linden, N.C. and special friends, Lori Gregg and Gary and Sheila Riden all of Charles City.

The family requests that those attending the Mass wear Cyclone or Packer attire.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and a nephew, Edward Van Essen.
