Mervil “Red” Christian, 90 of Emmons, MN, passed away Tuesday morning, July 29, 2014, at his home in rural Emmons, MN.

Memorial service will be 9 AM Saturday morning at Silver Lake Lutheran Church in rural Northwood, IA with Pastor Randy Baldwin officiating.

Family will greet friends at a gathering Friday evening from 5-7 PM at the Mittelstadt Funeral Home, 902 East Main Street, Lake Mills, IA 50450 and then again before the service at the church.

Inurnment will take place at Sliver Lake Lutheran Cemetery in rural Northwood, IA with Emmons Louis/Tveite Post #317 performing Military Rites at graveside.

Mervil “Red” Bernell Christian was born July 10, 1924 in Freeman Township, Freeborn County, MN the son of Melvin and Bertha (Larson) Christian. He attended school at and graduated from Emmons High School.

Red served his country during WWII in the United States Navy.

On May 28, 1948, Red was united in marriage to Betty Lou Ashpole at Silver Lake Lutheran Church. Together they farmed in the Emmons area and raised their family.

Red was devoted to his family and loved farming. Red also took great pride in his involvement as a Treatment Technician at Fountain Centers in Albert Lea.

He is survived by his loving wife, Betty of Emmons, MN; his children, Victoria (Frederick Ostrowski) of Otsego, MN; Judith (Larry) Christensen of Albert Lea, MN; Michael (Marlene) Christian of Northwood, IA; Kurtis Christian, and Mark (Sharon) Christian both of Albert Lea, MN; son-in-law Mike Haskins of Austin, MN; sister Lila Harris of Minneapolis, MN; along with many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Red was preceded in death by his parents, one daughter Nancy Haskins, three sisters, Ardella Dybvad, Marjorie Emmons and Dorothy Christian, one brother Byrine Christian, grandson Jerad Naser, step grandson Christopher Opseth, and step-granddaughter Kassi Haskins.
