Harold John Menke was born May 26, 1938, on the family farm northwest of Bancroft. He was the son of Alfred and Amorita (Schiltz) Menke. He attended school at St. John~s in Bancroft and graduated from Ledyard Community School in 1956. Harold served in the Army from 1961 until 1963 where he was stationed 19 months in Germany.

Harold married Barbara DeGeeter on May 11, 1963, at St. John~s Catholic Church in Bancroft. They celebrated 50 years of married life in 2013. He operated a corn shelling business with his brother Kenny for many years and then owned Harold Menke Trucking. He retired after 50 years in trucking.

Harold enjoyed dancing and singing, nature and sunsets. He also enjoyed playing cards, watching baseball games, golfing and bowling. Harold served on the volunteer fire department and ambulance crew. He was a member of St. John~s Catholic Church, being active in the choir. He was also a member of the McKinnon American Legion Post #377 and the Catholic Order of Foresters. Harold had a special love for his family, especially his children and grandchildren.

Harold J. Menke died Tuesday, March 18, 2014, at his home, he was 75 years old.

He is survived by his wife Barb of Bancroft; five children and eight grandchildren, Anita (Kevin) Osweiler and their children, Adam and Allison of Pine Bluff, AR, Eileen (Gregg) Elsbecker of Bancroft, Mark (Glenda) Menke and son Aaron of Madison Lake, MN, Dean (Ann) Menke and their children, Grace, Halle, Gavin, and Gibson of Algona; and Erica (Michael) Eikren and their daughter Annabelle of Ankeny. He is also survived by four sisters and two brothers, Carol Madson of Britt, Joyce Hatten of Bancroft, Kenny (Mary) Menke of Ledyard, Lynn (Roman) Lynch of Ames, William (Barb) Menke of Bancroft, and Shirley (Dennis) McCarthy of Bancroft; his brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Dr. Melvin (Priscilla) DeGeeter of Champagne, IL, Rita Torkelson of Sioux Falls, SD, Susan (Salvador) Rios of Aurora, IL, Joe (Patricia) DeGeeter of Bancroft, and Ruth (John) Irwin of O~Fallon, IL; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his son, Paul; and a sister, Jane Wesselman.
