Robert “Bob” Ohrt, 80, of Charles City, died Saturday, July 26, 2014 at the University of Iowa Hospitals in Iowa City.
Funeral services for Bob Ohrt will be held 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, July 30, 2014 at St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church. Pastor Dennis Niezwaag will officiate. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery at Cedar Falls.
Friends may call at the Hauser Funeral Home from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, July 29, 2014 and one hour prior to the service at the church on Wednesday.
Robert “Bob” Henry Ohrt, the son of Clarence and Minnie (Schlicht) Ohrt, was born May 12, 1934 in Reinbeck. He attended school in Reinbeck, graduating from Reinbeck High School in 1952. Bob helped on the family farm with his dad and worked at John Deere in Waterloo for a few years before enlisting in the Army after his best friend had been drafted. Bob served his country until his honorable discharge in September of 1961. Shortly after his discharge, he began working at John Deere again in the foundry. Bob worked his way up the ladder at John Deere and became a Service Technician who would eventually begin training other Service Technicians throughout the United States and the World. He retired for the first time in 1988, but was hired back on contract with John Deere to continue training until his final retirement in 2003.
Bob was united in marriage to Norma Jenson. This couple was blessed with two children, Susan and Jeff, and made their home in Cedar Falls. The couple later divorced.
Bob married Sandra (Cuvelier) Schuck in 1988 at Nazareth Lutheran Church in Cedar Falls. They lived in Cedar Falls and Guttenberg before moving to Charles City in 2005. Bob was a member of St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church in Charles City, the American Legion and Elk~s Lodge. He enjoyed carpentry work and fishing, but loved being able to help his family with projects they needed finished. Bob taught them all that patience is needed and if they were going to do a project they should do it right the first time.
Living family members include his wife of 26 years, Sandi; children: Susan (Randy) Helling of Rochester, Minnesota, Jeff (Lisa) Ohrt of Parkersburg, Kim (John) Dodge of Tulsa, Oklahoma, Dan (Julie) Schuck of Des Moines and Ken Schuck of Des Moines; nine grandchildren: Robert Ohrt, Judd Ohrt, Brett Helling, Eric Schuck, Jamie (Mike) Lewis, Jeremy Schuck, Jenna Schuck, Kendall Schuck and Keaton Schuck; four sisters: Carrol (Harry) Beebe of Cedar Falls, Eloise Keller, Delane Thede and Betty Peterson all of Reinbeck; brother, Jim (Susan) Ohrt of Bend, Oregon; along with several nieces, nephews, other family members and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; grandson, Ryan Helling; and sister, Clarice Delamore.
