Burial will be at the Union Cemetery, Iowa Falls.
Marian Helen Newton, a devoted mom, wife, sister, grandma, great-grandma, aunt and friend, went to sleep on the evening of February 12, 2014, just like any other night. Only this time at 8:00 the next morning she woke in heaven, beside her husband, Melvin, whom she had not seen for almost 15 years. At the time of her death, she was living in beautiful Colorado Springs at Pikes Peak Care and Rehabilitation Center.
Mom was born on March 7, 1922 in Iowa Falls, Iowa, to William and Gladys Welchko. She graduated from Iowa Falls High School in 1939. For the next nine years, she remained in Iowa Falls until that very special day in early 1948, when while working at Diamond’s she smiled into the face of a certain young man home on leave from Germany. Mom and Dad were married a short time later on November 23, 1948. It was at that time she became Mrs. Melvin Newton.
Farming, raising two boys, becoming active in the Open Bible Church in Iowa Falls, and traveling when they could to visit friends and family occupied most of her time for the next 35 plus years. It was during those years that she found work at Snook’s Cleaners and in the cafeteria at Ellsworth College. Mom taught us, her two boys, the value of loving, supporting and serving a spouse. She taught us to stop and literally smell the flowers. She had quite a knack at gardening and cooking…we can still smell those cinnamon rolls; it taught us the value of family.
It was in 1987 that mom and dad retired and moved to Colorado Springs, where, again, mom continued, alongside Dad, to serve and cook and love, only this time to her grandchildren. Mom was blessed to have five grandchildren, and later in life blessed with 12 great-grandchildren. Over the last almost 15 years she continued to touch so many lives, even after the death of that special serviceman she had been married to for over 50 years.
Even up to the day she passed away, you could see on her face that gentle smile that won people’s hearts. She enjoyed talking to people, and it was always the desire of her heart to make people feel welcome and loved.
Mom was preceded in death by her husband, her mom and dad, her sisters Arlene Diemer and Evelyn Hartema, and her brother Bill. She is survived by her two sons, David and his wife, Bev, of Colorado Springs, and Darwin and his wife, Anne, of Phoenix, Arizona, two sisters Kathryn Herteen and Shirley
Shepard both of Des Moines, as well as 5 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
This summer at her grandson’s wedding, mom got to see both of her sons, all her grandchildren, and all her great-grandchildren. Our mom (and Dad) represented a Godly legacy that day. It spanned four generations, everyone knowing Jesus Christ as LORD and Savior. Mom’s work here on the earth is
done….and done well!!
