Margaret May “Margy” Smith, 84, passed away Feb. 2, 2014, in Tahlequah, Okla. She was born to Oswald B. and Maude Peshak Strand on April 28, 1929, in Plymouth, Iowa, the fifth of six children. She married Harley Eugene Smith in Plymouth on Sept. 29, 1948.

Margy is survived by Harley, her husband of 65 years, and six children: Kay (Ken) Marquardt of Crevoladossola, Italy; Oswald (Regina) Smith of Kinnear, Wyo.; Austin (Phyllis) Smith of McGrady, N.C.; Marilyn (Les) Cox of Tulsa, Okla.; Roxie (Joe) Shirley of Bristow, Okla.; and Pegi Ferrell of St. Louis, Mo. She is also survived by 15 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren, a brother Leroy Strand of Geyser, Mont., and a sister Joan Rich of Normal, Ill.. She was preceded in death by her parents, an infant sister, a sister Dorothy Chehock, and a brother Dean Strand.

Margy was very dear to many people both young and old. She was a devoted helpmate to Harley and dedicated her life to rearing their six children on a farm near Plymouth. In 1970 the family moved to Tahlequah and in 1971 to a farm near Welling. As the children grew, Margy was able to spend more time on her hobbies of sewing, quilting, cooking and gardening. She became an expert seamstress and creative cook, and many people benefited from her practical advice concerning foods and nutrition. Also, her handmade greeting cards helped brighten days of many friends and family. Her deep Christian faith was always her source of joy and encouragement, and she treasured her Norwegian and Bohemian heritage.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at First Presbyterian Church of Tahlequah.
