MASON CITY | Phyllis J. Tietjens, 77, of Mason City and formerly of Manly, died Tuesday, Feb. 4, 2014, at St. Mary’s Hospital in Rochester, Minn.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 8, at Wesley United Methodist Church, 1405 S. Pennsylvania Ave., Mason City, with Pastor Keith Scott officiating. A private family burial will take place in the Oakwood Cemetery, Plymouth.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday Feb. 7, at Hogan-Bremer-Moore Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E., Mason City, and will continue one hour prior to Phyllis’ service at the church on Saturday.

Should friends desire, memorials may be left in Phyllis’ name to Feed the Starving Children or the Hawkeye Harvest Food Bank.

Phyllis J. Tohill was born on March 7, 1936, in Decatur, Ill., the daughter of Charles and Iola (DeVore) Tohill. She graduated from Assumption High School. Following her high school graduation Phyllis attended NIACC in Mason City where she earned her degree as a Registered Nurse. She then furthered her education at the University of Dubuque where she obtained her BSN.

On Sept. 26, 1953, Phyllis was united in marriage to Merrill Tietjens in Mason City; together they would be blessed with three children, Shirley, Roger, and Peggy.

Phyllis began her career as a critical care nurse for Mercy Hospital in Mason City. She worked at the hospital for 26 years before retiring in 1980 as a Certified Nurse Epidemiologist. Following her retirement she provided volunteer services for Crisis Intervention as an advocate for victims of sexual assault and domestic violence. She also served as a board member of the Worth County Public Health Board and volunteered for SHIIP.

She was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church, Wesley United Methodist Women, Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing, the Sarah/Leah Circle and Unity Chapter No. 58 of the Order of the Eastern Star.

Those grateful in sharing in her life are her children, Roger (Cheryl) Tietjens, Mason City, and Peggy Tietjens, Oakdale, Minn.; grandchildren, Amy (Josh) Pilcher, Andrew (Angela) Tietjens, Dawson Tietjens, and Stephanie Rankin; granddaughter-in-law, Amy Lynn Oehlert; great-grandchildren, Alexis Tietjens, Samantha Tietjens, Trenton Tietjens, Delijah Harris-Jenkins, Leah Tietjens, Aria Pilcher, Carter Pilcher, and Raina Tietjens; sister, Wanda (Gary) Shearer, and many nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Charles and Iola Tohill; her husband, Merrill Tietjens; her daughter, Shirley Tietjens; her grandson, Aaron Tietjens; and her brother, Dick Tohill.
