Thomas John Steier was born July 14, 1952, in Algona, Iowa, the son of Earl and Esther (Ruhnke) Steier. He grew up in Whittemore where he attended Presentation Academy and then went on to attend Bishop Garrigan High School in Algona, graduating in 1970. Following his graduation Tom began farming.
On April 11, 1981, Tom was united in marriage to Marla Kuyper at St. Michael~s Catholic Church in Whittemore. After their marriage they lived on a farm near Whittemore. Along with his farming, Tom started Steier Turkey Enterprises, raising turkeys until 1999.
Tom enjoyed fishing, following high school sports, watching basketball, working in his shop, watching the Andy Griffith Show, and was a Chicago Cubs fan. He was a member of the St. Michael~s Parish and was currently serving as a Fern Valley Township Trustee. Tom had also served as a Bishop Garrigan School Board member, as well as a past board member of the West Bend Elevator.
Tom died Thursday, January 30, 2014, at the Kossuth Regional Health Center in Algona, Iowa. He was 61.
He is survived by his wife, Marla Steier of Whittemore; children, John and Jeannie Steier of Algona; Mark and Maria Steier and daughter, Charleigh of Algona; Amanda Steier of Whittemore; siblings, Tim and Barb Steier of Blue Earth, MN; Mary Lou and Lyle Pinnekamp of Garner; Bill and Julie Steier of Inver Grove Heights, MN; Paul and Susan Steier of Granger and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and grandparents.
