NORTHWOOD | Mavis Elaine (Berge) Rustad passed away at United Hospital District in Blue Earth, Minn., on Jan. 29, 2014, at the age of 84.

Mavis was born in Worth County, Iowa, on July 14, 1929, to John and Alice (Bergan) Berge and grew up on a farm east of Kensett. Mavis graduated from Kensett High School in 1947 and went to Iowa State Teachers College to earn a certificate of teaching. She taught grades K-8 for two years in a country school northeast of Kensett. On July 14, 1950, Mavis married Harold Rustad at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. Mavis and Harold lived east of Northwood and finally moved to the Rustad farm in 1959.

Mavis enjoyed working with crafts, needlepoint, sewing, dancing, and her favorite was gardening. She took care of a large lawn and many flower gardens were a joy to her. She especially took pleasure in the times when her grandchildren visited. She truly loved nurturing, playing and enjoying time spent with her grandchildren. Mavis also enjoyed being a part of First Lutheran church activities: Rachel circle, Christmas youth programs, Ladies Aid, serving lutefisk suppers, and Sunday School teaching. Mavis worked at Caroll George Manufacturing, sewing accessories for mobile homes and also enjoyed working at the Village Florist in Northwood. Mavis enjoyed playing bridge. On her 80th birthday, family and friends gathered at the farm to help celebrate.

Mavis is survived by her three children: Joan (John) Huisman, Roger (Debra) Rustad, and Arlyn (Kerin) Rustad, her seven grandchildren: Lisa Rustad, Lynn (Bruce) Hemann, Susan (Kevin) McNutt, Kelly (Andy) Eskildsen, Angie (Vik) Chadha, Hailee Rustad, and Quinn Huisman. Mavis had 9 great-grandchildren which brought out lots of smiles.when they called her Gma Uffda. She is also survived by sister-in-laws, Margaret (Rustad) Berge, Helen (Rustad) Senne, nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Harold, brother and sister-in-law, Glenn and Shirley Berge, brother Alvin Berge, brother-in-laws Ed Senne and Curtis Rustad, and sister-in-law Rena Rustad.

Visitation will be from 2-4 p.m. Feb. 2, 2014, at Schroeder & Sites Funeral home, Northwood.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. on Monday, Feb. 3, at First Lutheran Church, Northwood.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to the South Shell Rock Cemetery Association.
