CLEAR LAKE | Marlyn Eugene “Gene” Hall, 74, Clear Lake, formerly of Fertile, died Wednesday, March 5, 2014, at Oakwood Care Center, Clear Lake.

A funeral service for Gene will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, March 8, 2014, at the Church of Christ, 3493 Eagle Ave, Fertile, with Pastor Rob Perry and Pastor Dennis Ganz officiating.

Burial will be in the Grant Township Cemetery, Fertile.

Visitation will be held from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. on Friday at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 North Fourth St., Clear Lake. Visitation will also be held one hour prior to service time on Saturday at the church.

The family would like to suggest that those wishing to give a memorial in his memory, may wish to direct memorials to the Church of Christ in Fertile.

Gene was born on March 28, 1939, in Mason City, the son of Glea and Mavis (Ouverson) Hall. He received his education in the Fertile Community Schools, graduating from Fertile High School in 1957, and also graduated from Mason City Junior College with an AA degree in business.

Gene was united in marriage to Judith “Judie” Haugen on Aug. 23, 1959, and to this marriage four children were born, Tim, Tracy, Tami and Troy. After their marriage, Gene worked for Northern Lumber, Great Plains Lumber, and Forest City Improvement Company, in Forest City, and Klemme, before becoming co-owner purchasing the Fertile Lumber and Hardware Company in 1978 until his retirement due to ill health in 1997.

Gene enjoyed doing carpentry work with his sons and son-in-law, enjoyed helping others, watching sports, especially the Iowa Hawkeyes, and spending time with friends at the Apple Valley Assisted Living, but his great love and enjoyment was spending time with his family.

Gene was a very active and life member of the Church of Christ, Elder of the Church and Chairman of Board when they built the church, taught Sunday School for several years, and sang in the church choir.

Left to cherish his memory are his children, Tim (Patty) Hall of Mason City, Tracy (Tammy) Hall of Joice, Tami (Dan) Horner of Clear Lake, and Troy (Trish) Hall of Forest City; grandchildren, Christopher, Casey, Stephen and Andrew (Brittany) Hall, Samantha, Brady, Austin, and Hailey Horner, and Bethany, Nicholas, Logan, and Carsen Hall; one great-grandson, Paxten Hall; his brothers, Brian (Coralene) Hall of Clear Lake, and Gary (Cheryl) Hall of Lincoln, Ill.; his brother-in-law, Larry (Dixie) Haugen of Clear Lake; several nieces, nephews, as well as many extended family members and friends.

Gene was preceded in death by his parents, Glea and Mavis Hall; wife, Judie on June 28, 2004; sister-in-law, Janan Haugen; and his father and mother-in-law, James and Esther Haugen.
