MASON CITY | Kurt Andrew Petersen, 53, Mason City, died Thursday, Jan. 9, 2014, at his home in Mason City.

A memorial mass for Kurt will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 14, 2014, at Epiphany Parish St. Joseph Catholic Church, 302 Fifth St. S.E., Mason City, with the Rev. Neil Manternach officiating.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday with a scriptural wake service at 6:30 p.m. on Monday at the Hogan-Bremer-Moore Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E., Mason City. Inurnment will be in the Memorial Park Cemetery, Hwy 18 West, Mason City.

Kurt Andrew Petersen was born on March 29, 1960, in Mason City, the son of Tom and Eileene (Lugar) Petersen. He attended Mason City Community Schools, graduating from Mason City High School in 1978.

Kurt began his career in law enforcement as a jailer for the Cerro Gordo County Sheriff’s Department. Kurt attended and graduated from the Iowa Law Enforcement Academy at the Camp Dodge in Des Moines in 1983. Kurt worked as a deputy sheriff for the Cerro Gordo County Sheriff’s Department for 30 years before his retirement in 2011. Prior to that he worked for Keifer Floral in Mason City.

He was united in marriage to Carol Voight on Aug. 30, 1986, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Osage.

Kurt loved to ride his Harley and every year participated in the Guns and Hoses ride in Osage. He enjoyed marching with the Alumni Band during Band Festival and enjoyed playing his guitars, listening to music, especially to Neil Young. He was an Oakland Raiders and Twins Fan. He enjoyed softball, telling stories, and going to the Barbeque Bash in Mason City every year, but his great love and enjoyment was his children and family.

He was a member of Epiphany Parish in Mason City, Knights of Columbus, and Iowa Sheriff’s and Deputy Association, and the Critical Incident Stress Management Debriefing team (CISM).

Those left to cherish his memory are his children, Andrea Petersen and fiancé Shaun McGuire of Forest City, and Neil Petersen of Ames; brother, Ken Petersen of Sioux City; nephews, Corey Petersen of Ames and Ryan Petersen of Sioux City; his significant other Cheryl Lauritsen of Mason City; former wife, Carol Petersen of Mason City; his uncles and aunts, Bob (Anna Mae) Lugar of Mason City, Bill (Jane) Lugar Mason City, and Delores Lugar of LaCrosse, Wis.; many cousins still in the area; as well as many other extended family members and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; uncle, Bernard Lugar; father-in-law, Jim Voight; brother-in-law, Russell Voight; sister-in-law, Deb Voight; nephew, Cody Borcherding; friend, Bryan Hanna; and many other special aunts and uncles.
