LaVerne Wiarda, 74, of Ackley, Iowa, passed away Saturday, January 25, 2014, at the Rehabilitation Center of Hampton, Iowa. Funeral services for LaVerne Wiarda will be 10:30 Wednesday, January 29, 2014, at the United Methodist Church, 416 Hardin Street, Ackley, Iowa. A time of visitation will be one hour prior to services at the church on Wednesday. Burial will be at the Oak Wood Cemetery, Ackley, Iowa, with military honors provided by the Elliot-Keninger American Legion Post #252, Ackley, Iowa. The Linn’s Funeral Homes Ackley Chapel has been entrusted with the arrangements.

LaVerne William Wiarda was born July 3, 1939, at Iowa Falls, Iowa, the son of Benjamin and Elizabeth Marie [Clawson] Wiarda. He attended the German Township Country School and then helped his father and brothers on the family farm. He served in the United States Army for 2 years and was a member of the Ackley, Iowa, Elliot-Keninger American Legion Post # 252. LaVerne talked often about his years working with Joe Thuente at Frudden Lumber in Ackley. He also enjoyed helping on the farm, seeing the countryside behind the wheel of his pickup and watching sports on TV. LaVerne was a member of the United Methodist Church, Ackley, Iowa, the Ackley Saddle Club, and the American Legion.
He was preceded in death by his parents: Ben and Elizabeth Wiarda; and an infant sister: Sharlene Wiarda. He is survived by two brothers: Tom Wiarda of Ackley and Paul [Judy] Wiarda of Ackley; nephews: Jeff [Christa] Wiarda of Ackley, Chad Wiarda of Hampton, Iowa, Mike [Anne] Wiarda of Ackley, and Todd Wiarda of Murphysboro, Illinois; a niece: Dawn [Jason] Kraft of Wilton, Iowa. Uncle LaVerne also had ten great nieces and nephews as well as four great-great nieces and nephews.
As a lifelong resident of Ackley, Iowa, LaVerne lived his life as he chose and always kept the town water tower in his sights.
