JOHNSTON | Kenneth Michael “Mike” Heatherton, 68, of Johnston, Iowa, formerly of Mason City, passed from this life suddenly on Tuesday, July 15, 2014, at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. on Thursday, July 17, at Iles Dunn’s Chapel in Des Moines. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday, July 18, at the funeral home. Private family committal services will take place at Iowa Veterans Cemetery in Adel.

Mike was born on Jan. 18, 1946, in Waterloo, to Kenneth Raymond and Marilyn June (Marmie) Heatherton. He was raised in Cedar Falls, Iowa, and later grew up in Mason City. Mike attended Accounting-Hamilton Business College and was a U.S. Air Force veteran during Vietnam War. For more than 25 years, he was employed with the U.S. Post Office as a Postal Clerk, retiring in 2004. In 1991, Mike moved to the Des Moines area. On Dec. 3, 2004, he was united in marriage to Kathy Keller. He enjoyed cooking, fishing, walking and golfing. Mike loved spending time with his family whom he dearly loved, as well as going to his grandchildren~s sport events. He also loved his two granddoggies, “Abby” and “Whitney.” Mike was a wonderful, generous, loving, caring and devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend. He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Kathy Heatherton of Johnston; two daughters, Amy (Bruce) Wyborny of Nora Springs, and Sara (Colin) Bengfort of West Des Moines; sister, Linda Heatherton and fiancé, Don Starcevich of West Des Moines; three grandchildren, Aubrey, Rachel and Kyle Wyborny all of Nora Springs; and a host of several extended family members and many friends.

Mike was preceded into eternal life by his parents.
