Patricia Louise Coen Funeral October 3
Published October 5, 2002

Funeral services for Patricia Louise Coen. 63, formerly of Northwood, who died Sunday, September 29, 2002 at Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, were held Thursday, October 3 at Major Erickson Funeral Home with Rev. William Smith of St. Anthony Church. Des Moines, officiating.

Patricia was born June 29, 1939 in Creston, Iowa, the daughter of Robert D. and Ruby M. (Campbell) Smith. She lived in various communities, most recently in Northwood, moving to Mason City in July of this year. She worked for Fieldstone Cabinetry in Northwood and most recently as a CNA for the Lutheran Retirement Home. She retired in December, 2001. She enjoyed crocheting, gardening, flowers, vegetables, riding her bike and had a special place in her heart for her great grandson, Christopher.

Patricia is survived by her children, Pamela Marie Clausen of Cincinnati, Ohio; Diana Mae Fleenor and husband Joel of Mason City; Timothy Lee Coen of Mason City; Laurie Ann Duryee of Mason City; 11 grandchildren: Jennifer, Jonathan, Alexander, Russell, Jeremy, Justin, Kassondra, Douglas, Darin, Kirsten and David; a great grandson, Christopher; brother. Robert D. Smith Jr. and wife Dorothy of Sedalia, Missouri; sister, Beverly Broege and husband Keith of Poplar Bluffs, Missouri; brother, Rev. William Smith and wife Pat of Des Moines; brother, Eugene Gary Smith of Kansas; sister. Joyce Schmidtke of St. Ansgar; brother, Ray Smith and wife Marcia of Osage; sister, Rozella Melancon and husband Bruce of Lafitte, Louisiana.

She was preceded in death by her parents and a son, Larry Coen.

Following cremation, inurnment will take place at the Osage Cemetery.


Richard Barclay Funeral September 30

Funeral services for Richard D. Barclay, 72, of St. Ansgar, who died on Wednesday, September 25, 2002, at Mercy Medical Center, were held on Monday, September 30, 2002 at Clasen-Jordan Mortuary Chapel with the Rev. Randy Petersen officiating.

Richard was born September 8, 1930 in Maple View, Minnesota, to Emanuel and Lila (Larson) Barclay. Lila died when he was a baby and he was raised by Emanuel and Dena (Scamper) Barclay. As a young man he worked for various farmers around the Austin and northern Iowa areas.

On February 20, 1964, he was married to Norma Osborn in Sioux Falls, SD. He was in the Army from February 16, 1951 to February 25, 1953. After his discharge, he moved to Newton and worked for Maytag until his retirement in 1992. Richard and Norma moved to St. Ansgar in 1992. He was a member of the Newton VFW and American Legion, past member of the Moose Lodge and Eagles Club. He enjoyed camping, playing softball, baseball, horseshoe pitching, bowling and watching sports on his three TV's at the same time. He was a big fan of the Minnesota Twins and Vikings.

Richard is survived by his wife, Norma of St. Ansgar; a daughter, Angela Whilatch of Cedar Rapids; son and daughter-in-law, Sale and Saundra Barclay of Joyce; step-son Roy Dean McMullen; four grandchildren; first wife, Rosie Boss and daughter Cheryl Alexander; sister and brother-in-law Audrey and Max Guritz of Dexter, Minnesota; brother and sisters-in-law Bob and Alvina Barclay of Austin, Minnesota, and Ruby Barclay of Austin; nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, step-mother, son-in-law Craig Whilatch and brother Mike Barclay.

Graveside services will be held in the Newton Memorial gardens Cemetery in Newton, Iowa.

Myhre and Kuennen Exchange Vows
Published October 5, 2002

Laura Renee Myhre of St. Ansgar, daughter of Kevin and Arlene Myhre of St. Ansgar, and Nicholas Paul Kuennen of Fort Atkinson, son of Adrian and Marilyn Kuennen of Fort Atkinson, were united in marriage on August 10, 2002 at Our Savior's Lutheran Church, Lyle, Minnesota, with Pastor Barbara Finley-Shea performing the ceremony.

Matron of honor was Angie Tomlinson and bridesmaids were Lisa Kruse, Maria Kuennen, and Sandra Reth. Flower girl was Paige Salz.

Bestman was Andy Kuennen and groomsmen were Denny Kuennen, Jeff Myhre and Jackson Hayek.

Ushers were Landon Perkins, Garrett Follmuth, Brian Huinker and Joel Shugart.

A reception and dance followed the ceremony at the Holiday Inn, Austin.

 A rehearsal dinner was held August 9 at Lansing Corners in Austin. The couple are residing in Iowa City

Amelia Anna Kloss Born September 17
Published October 12, 2002

Trevor, age 6, and Eliegh, age 2, Kloss would like to announce the birth of their sister, Amelia Anna Kloss, born September 17, 2002, weighing eight pounds and six ounces at birth. Grandparents are Charles and Karen Kittleson of St. Ansgar, and Al and Elaine Kloss of Rice, Minnesota. Great grandparents are Barb Rosenberg and Lola Kittleson of St. Ansgar and Elizabeth Kloss of Little Falls, Minnesota. Great great grandmothers are Gwendolyn Pike and Anna Rosenberg of St. Ansgar.

Grace Lafferty Funeral October 14

Funeral services for Grace Naoma Earl Lafferty, 89, who died at the St. Ansgar Good Samaritan Center Friday, October 11, 2002, were held on Monday, October 14 at St. Ansgar United Methodist Church with the Rev. Jay Amundson officiating.

Grace was born on August 11, 1913 in Freeborn County, Minnesota to Casper and Lilly (Lerum) Earl. She graduated from Austin High school and Mankato State College (Minnesota State University, Mankato). She started teaching in 1932 in Freeborn County Country Schools and taught in Lansing, Lyle and Hayfield Schools (Brownsdale) before retirement in 1978. She lived most of her adult life in Austin before moving to St. Ansgar in 2001.

On December 28, 1939 she married John D. Lafferty in Austin, Minnesota.

Grace enjoyed reading and playing bridge. Special memories were of the many trips to Ontario, Canada to fish with her family and friends.

Grace is survived by her son, Dr. John D. and wife Rebecca Lafferty of St. Ansgar; her grandchildren, Jill Lafferty and husband Alan Pierce of Golden Valley, Minnesota; and Anne Lafferty of Minneapolis, Minnesota; a sister Anna Arett of Austin; nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, five brothers and four sisters.

There was a graveside service October 14 at Fairview Cemetery, Oakland, Minnesota.

Backhaus and O’Gorman Wed

Published October 19, 2002

Eugene Backhaus and Carolyn O'Gorman were married in an outdoor ceremony on Friday, July 5, 2002, at 5 p.m. in the evening, at the Franciscan Event Center in Denver, Colorado, officiated by the Rev. Gary Witkop.

Family and friends from Colorado, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Nebraska, Texas and Washington, helped the couple celebrate their wedding.

The bride is the daughter of Alvin and Rosetta Reimers of Grand Island, Nebraska, and the groom is the son of Earl Backhaus of Manly, Iowa, and Elizabeth Backhaus of Grafton.

The bridegroom graduated from St Ansgar High School.

The couple are making their home in Northglenn, Colorado.
