Funeral services for Dorothy Hulshizer, 83, of Oregon, Illinois, formerly of St. Ansgar, who died Tuesday May 28, 2002, at the Oregon Health Center, will be held Saturday, June 1 at the Schroeder & Sites Funeral Home in St. Ansgar. Burial will be in the Woodbury Cemetery in Lyle, Minnesota.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Thelma Rathjen Funeral May 27

Funeral services for Thelma P. Rathjen, 88, of Austin, Minnesota, who died Thursday, May 23, 2002 at the Austin Medical Center, were held on Monday, May 27 at Grace Lutheran Church with Pastor Joe Schularick officiating.

Thelma was born August 9, 1913, in Eagle Grove, Iowa to Lou and Louise (Pringle) Skou. She attended school in Alden, Iowa, and graduated as Salutatorian of her class. In 1931 she was united in marriage to Alvie Bahr at Buckeye, Iowa. They farmed in the Alden and Buckeye areas until 1952 when they moved to a farm north of St. Ansgar.

On June 12, 1976 she was united in marriage to Elmer Rathjen of Austin. The couple farmed near Austin until they retired in 1995. They moved to the Cedars of Austin where she resided at the time of her death. Thelma was a wonderful mother and grandmother. She was an excellent seamstress and had a huge garden on the farm and loved flowers and reading.

Thelma is survived by her husband, Elmer Rathjen of Austin; children: Marylyn and Alien Holland of St. Ansgar; Dallas Bahr, Austin; Marlene and Russell Hulshizer of St. Ansgar; Craig and Jill Bahr of Bettendorf; Mary and Russell Bissen, Stacyville; step children: Lee and Ruth Rathjen of Austin; Joyce and Bruce Blank, Phoenix, Arizona; Edwina Wayne of Pequot Lakes, Minnesota; 26 grandchildren; several great grandchildren and great great grandchildren; sisters, Nova Smith of Kansas City, Missouri, Wilma Gehrke of Iowa Falls, and Anne Brookshier of Lexington, Kansas.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Alvie; parents, son Delmar; grandson David; grandson Peter.

Interment will be in the Grandview Cemetery. Honorary casket bearers were Erin Bahr, Jackie Hemann, Renae Seitz, Crystal Bissen, Annette Powers, Julie Rathjen, Shelly Bruton, Angle  Holtizke and Amy Hofland. Casket bearers were Don Hofland, Darrell Hofland, Paul Hofland, Justin Bissen, Matthew Bissen, Steve Bahr, Michael Bahr and Jack Bahr.

Ruth E. Dalluge Funeral May 31

Funeral services for Ruth E. Dalluge, 94, of Grafton, who died on Tuesday, May 28, 2002, at the St. Ansgar Good Samaritan Center, were held Friday, May 31 at Emmanuel Lutheran Church, Grafton, with the Rev. Wayne Ellingson officiating.
Ruth Eva was born January 7, 1908, in Barton Township, Worth County, to Fred and Lena (Viergutz) Petznick. She was baptized and confirmed at the Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Grafton. She attended Barton county school, parochial school and later the high school in Grafton.

On September 22, 1929, she was united in marriage to Lawrence Dalluge at Emmanuel Lutheran Church. They farmed in the Grafton area in the early years of their marriage. They moved to Grafton where she lived until entering the Good Samaritan Center in 1998. Among her interests throughout the years were crocheting, embroidering, gardening, baking, dancing, playing cards and fishing. Her greatest love was taking care of children. In addition to her children she and her husband had nine foster children and she was thought of as "grandma" by the neighborhood children.

Ruth is survived by her son, Richard Dalluge and wife LuAnn of Spicer, Minnesota; daughter, Rebecca Dalluge of Rochester, Minnesota; two grandsons, Samuel Dalluge and wife Andrea and their three boys, Noah, Gabriel and Joshua of Rogers, Minnesota; a sister, Evelyn Taylor and husband Ed of Torrance, California; several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Lawrence; one sister Dorothy Terrill; two brothers, Ruben and Alvin.

Interment will be at the Grafton Cemetery.

She married Harold Hulshizer on December 21, 1940 at the Little Brown Church in the Vale. Dorothy is survived by her husband Harold of 62 years; son, Fred Hulshizer of Madison, Illinois; daughter, Carolyn (Donald) Welsh of Chana, Illinois; grandchildren: Bill (Janice) Welsh of Golden, Colorado; Denise Welsh of Phoenix, Arizona; Natasha (Michael) Lovings of Beaver Dam, Wisconsin; Bronwyn (Michael) Anthony of Mt. Horeb, Wisconsin; daughter-in-law Katie Hulshizer of Richland Center, Wisconsin; great grandchildren, Mark and Brett Anthony; Griffin Lovings; brother James Greiner; sisters, Ruth (Lawrence) Beltz; Hazel (Harold) Petznick; Faye (Don) Severson; Louise (Earl) Kirchgatter. Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents, brothers Freddie, Louis, William, Joseph, Robert and Verlin Greiner; sisters Mary Greiner, Mildred Greiner, Inez Huber, Mabel Severson and Mae Petznick; grandson, Craig Welsh. Burial was in the Woodbury Cemetery in Lyle, Minnesota.

Myrtella Langrock funeral May 22 June 07, 2002

Evelyn "Myrtella" Langrock, 100, of Toeterville, died Friday May 17, 2002, at the Good Samaritan Center in St. Ansgar. Funeral services were held Wednesday May 22, 2002, at the St. Peter Lutheran Church in Toeterville, with the Dr. Elaine Siemsen officiating. Interment was at the St. Peter Cemetery in Toeterville. Evelyn Myrtella (Sampson) Langrock was born on Feb. 16, 1902, on a farm in Nevada Township next to the Six Mile Grove Lutheran Church, east of Lyle, MN. The youngest of five children, born to Christopher and Anna (Torgeson) Sampson, she was baptized on March 20, 1902, by Pastor Eggen. On April 20, 1916, she was confirmed by Rev. Elmer Moe at the Six Mile Grove Lutheran Church. Her public school education was at the Pinehurst School and at Lyle. At an early age Myrtella began playing the piano and this talent became an enjoyment for herself and others, her entire life. When she was 12 years old she played "The Wedding March" at her sister Bellena's marriage to Newell Nelson, at the Six Mile Grove Lutheran Church. As a young adult she joined the Robertson Family Orchestra, as a piano player. The band played in all the town dance halls in the area, including Toeterville, Lyle, and Rose Creek. On October 20, 1926, she was united in marriage to Fred Daniel Langrock of Toeterville. They made their home in the Toeterville Community the rest of their lives. When her children were in high school, playing in the St. Ansgar Band, Myrtella, with the help of her children, organized the Toeterville Church Band. The band played marches by Sousa and others, and performed at mission festivals and other church functions. Myrtella always filled in the missing band parts on the piano. Besides the piano, other interests were being a homemaker and working with wood. Her woodworking, consisted of designing and creating various wood objects, ranging from wall hangings and table decorations to small furniture. When the new St. Peter Lutheran Church was built in Toeterville in 1967, she served with her husband as a member of the building committee. When her new home was built in Toeterville, in 1971, she was the chief designer. After her husband Fred Daniel passed away in 1972, she continued to live in Toeterville, until July 1, 2000, when she entered the Good Samaritan Center in St. Ansgar. On Feb. 16th, of this year Myrtella celebrated her 100th Birthday. According to many of those who attended the event, the highlight was Myrtella playing some of her old songs on the piano. Myrtella died May 17, 2002, at the age of 100 years 3 months and 1 day. Living family members include: her four children, Avis Hanson and husband Leo of St. Ansgar; Audrey Carroll of Austin, MN.; Fred C. Langrock of Toeterville; and David Langrock and wife Linda of Davenport. Eight Grandchildren and eight Great-Grandchildren, who include: Dennis Hanson and wife Mary and son Nicholas; Lisa Hansen and husband Jeff and children Clark Jorgensen and Leslie Jorgensen Gavrila and husband Dan; Lynn Carroll and wife Sue and children Tessa and Samuel; Lori Johnson and husband Todd and children Heather and Erica; Todd Carroll and wife Heather and son Jacob; and Amy, Dawn and Lacey Langrock. She was preceded in death by her parents; three sisters and one brother; one son-in-law Donovan Carroll. Private graveside services for Bree Ellen-Jean Rosenberg, daughter of Joseph and Stacey (Bohlen) Rosenberg, who died Wednesday, June 5, 2002 at St. Mary's Hospital, Rochester, Minnesota, were held on Friday, June 7 at the St. John's Lutheran Cemetery, Rock Township, Mitchell County, with the Rev. Rose Marie Nack officiating.

Bree was born June 3, 2002 at the Methodist Hospital in Rochester. She is survived by her parents, Joseph and Stacey Rosenberg of St. Ansgar; brother Remy Rosenberg at home; maternal grandparents, Patricia Hesseltine of Spirit Lake and Randall Bohlen of Charles City; paternal grandparents Richard and Betty Rosenberg of St. Ansgar; great grandparents Phyllis Norby of St. Ansgar; Sylvan and Virginia Faas of Mona; and Evelyn Spivey of Rockford. Ruth E. Arnold Funeral June 3 June 07, 2002

Funeral services for Ruth E. (Penney) Arnold, 75, of Mason City and formerly of Little Cedar, Iowa, who died Thursday, May 30, 2002, at the Faith Lutheran Home, Osage, were held Monday, June 3 at the Little Cedar United Methodist Church in Little Cedar, with the Rev. Robert W. Lemmermann officiating.

Ruth was born June 18, 1926, in Little Cedar, the daughter of Clinton "Joe" and Thelma (McPhail) Penney. Ruth graduated from Little Cedar High School in 1943 and received her teaching degree from Luther College in Decorah. She taught elementary school for various school districts throughout South Dakota, Minnesota, and Iowa. She began her teaching career in a rural school in Mitchell County. She taught for a number of years in Lansing and Osage. She continued her career teaching in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, and Richfield, Minnesota, before moving to Mason City. She was an active supporter of the school and college activities that her children were involved in. Ruth is survived by two daughters, Patricia Fankell and husband Bill of Des Moines; Penny Arnold of Des Moines; a son, Mark Arnold of Spokane, Washington; a sister, Maxine McSweeney and husband Bob of Osage. She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, Dean and Rex Penney. Interment was in the Little Cedar Cemetery.

Judith K. Wolff Funeral June 14

Judith K. Wolff, age 63, of St. Ansgar, Iowa, died Tuesday, June 11, 2002 at the Mitchell County Regional Health Care Center, Osage, Iowa. Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m. Friday, June 14, at the First Lutheran Church, St. Ansgar, Iowa.

Judith was born June 2, 1939, in Trenton, Missouri, the daughter of Fay and Bonnie (Welch) Bryant. She grew up in Trenton and graduated from Trenton High School in 1957. On April 27, 1958, she married Larry Wolff in St. Ansgar, Iowa. They were the parents of four children. The family moved from Missouri to St. Ansgar in August of 1967, where she has continued to make her home.

Judy worked as a secretary for many years. She served as secretary to the Superintendent of Schools from 1974 through 1984, and then was employed by the Adams, Rizzi & Sween law firm in Austin from 1984 until she retired in September, 2001 due to ill health.

Judy enjoyed a variety of activities, including bowling, reading, and singing with her sisters. One accomplishment in which she took pride was being appointed to the St. Ansgar City Council in March of 1972 to complete the unexpired term of a council member who moved away. It was a history-making event in that she was the first woman to serve on the council.
Judy was member of First Lutheran Church of St. Ansgar, Iowa.

She is survived by her husband, Larry; a son, Larry, Jr. and his wife, Marjorie, of St. Ansgar; a son, Kelly and his wife, Lora, of Albia, Iowa; and a daughter, Ramona and her husband, Larry Shunkwiler, of Forest City, Iowa. Also surviving are eight grandchildren, Kevin Wolff; Jessica Wolff, Casey Wolff and Joshua Wolff; and Nathan To, Chelsea To, Dalton Shunkwiler, and Megan Shunkwiler. She is also survived by two sisters, Mary (Jake) Batson, of Gait, Missouri, and Lanah (Orien) Bagley, of Waco, Texas; and a sister-in-law, Linda (Les) Brych, of Stacyville, Iowa.

She was preceded in death by her parents and by a son, Shelby, who died in infancy.

Cindy Richey, daughter of Jay and Marilyn Richey of Mason City, and Craig Carson, son of Brian and Marcia Carlson of Stacyville, were united in marriage on May 11, 2002, at Holy Family Church with Fr. Cahill officiating.

Angela Willits was maid of honor and bridesmaids were Amy Oelkers and Molly Svejda. Flower girl was Kristen Carlson. Personal attendants were Abby. Williams and Lisa Turner.

Best man was Nathan Horgen and groomsmen were Chris Carlson and Mike Carlson. Ring bearer was Lakotah Oelkers. Ushers were Dan Love and Eric Kline.

The couple is making their home in Mason City.
