Sidney Leroy Holt

Sidney Leroy Holt, 84, of Marshalltown, entered into eternal life on Tuesday, September 9, 2008, at the Iowa Veteran's Home in Marshalltown.

Graveside services will be held at 1:00 p.m., on Friday, September 26, at the Somber Lutheran Cemetery in Northwood. Military honors will be provided by the Lake Mills Otto/Chose Post #235 of Lake Mills. The arrangements have been entrusted to the Pursel-Davis Funeral Home.

Sidney was born on October 23, 1923, the son of John and Janet Holt in Bristol Township, Iowa. He joined the Army and was a rifleman in Korea, receiving the Purple Heart in 1951 and many other honors after being wounded in Kaesong. After his discharge, he worked as a farm hand.

He was Lutheran and attended church every Sunday, and enjoyed working with wood, bargain hunting and outdoor activities.

He will be missed by his cousin, Joel Holt of Earlville, Iowa.

In eternal life Sidney joins his parents; and sons, Melvin, twins Raymond and Ralph and Donald; and daughter, Ruth.

Bonnie Mae Hagen

Bonnie Mae Hagen, 80, of Forest City, formerly of Northwood, died on Thursday, September 18, 2008, at the Muse-Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., on Monday, September 22, at the Sion Lutheran Church, Lake Mills, with Reverend Daniel R. Hart officiating. Burial was in the Sion Lutheran Church Cemetery. Visitation was held one hour prior to the service time on Monday at the church. The Conner Colonial Chapel, Northwood, was in charge of the arrangements.

Bonnie Mae Hagen, was born on October 16, 1927 in Thornton, the daughter of Peter and Cecelia (Bertelsen) Floy. She was baptized at the St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Thornton and reaffirmed the faith of her baptism through confirmation at the United Lutheran Church in Thornton. Bonnie graduated from the Thornton Consolidated School with the class of 1945 and attended the Hamilton Business College in Mason City. Bonnie worked as a secretary for the Hotel Hanford in Mason City and Omaha, Nebraska for several years.

Bonnie was united in marriage to Herbert Hagen on March 27, 1956. She entered this union with two daughters, Peggy and Margaret from a previous marriage. They became a family and farmed in Brookfield Township near Northwood. Later two more daughters were born, Dawn and Ruth. In June 1998, they moved to their home in Northwood. Bonnie lived this last year at the Forest Plaza Assisted Living in Forest City.

Bonnie was a 4-H Leader and served on the Worth County Extension Council. Over the years she was a Sunday and Bible School Teacher and a former WELCA President at Sion. She was a member of the First Lutheran Church in Northwood.

Bonnie enjoyed collecting teacups, quilting, making quilts for all her family and was a great seamstress, but her greatest love and enjoyment was her family and grandchildren.

Those left to cherish her memory are her daughters, Peggy Hagen of Eden Prairie, Minnesota, Margaret (Jack) Harris of Slater, Dawn (Dan) Millard of Fertile and Ruth Hagen of Joice; grandchildren, Chad (Carrie) Harris of Grimes, Jodi Harris of Des Moines, Jennifer Harris of Coralville and Tara (Birra) Birri of Fertile and Ivy Millard of Lackland AFB, Texas; great-grandchildren, Robay and Harra Birri of Fertile; sister, Thelma Nicolet of Belmond; brother, Charles (Janice) Floy of Hot Springs Village, Arkansas; sister-in-law, Judy Hagen of Albert Lea, Minnesota; and many nieces, nephews, other extended family members and friends.

Bonnie was preceded in death by her parents; grandparents; husband, Herbert who died in May 2001; sister, Seydell Hagen; and three brothers-in-law, Lawrence and Richard Hagen and Dwain Nicolet.

Drexell Earl Estes

Drexell Earl Estes, 85, of Northwood, died on Wednesday, September 24, 2008, at the Lutheran Retirement Home, Northwood.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, at 10:30 a.m., at the United Methodist Church, Northwood, with Rev. Wendi Gillan officiating. Visitation was on Friday, from 5-7:00 p.m., at the Conner Colonial Chapel, Northwood and one hour before the services on Saturday at the church.

Drexell was born on July 8, 1923, on the family farm in rural Northwood, Iowa, the son of A.W. and Stella Estes. He attended the Kensett School #6. Drexell farmed with his father and continued to farm in the Northwood area where he also did custom farming. He married Bernice Low on April 27, 1946, at the Little Brown Church, Nashua. During the off season of farming he worked for Randall Transit, Northwood Elevator and other electrical companies in the Northwood area. He also worked at the Northwood Sale Barn every Thursday for many years.

He enjoyed woodworking, spending time with his grandkids and family, doing crossword puzzles, dancing, playing cards, talking about the good old days and the coffee gatherings at Sue’s Corner Post. He was a member of the United Methodist Church, Northwood.

Those left to cherish his memory are his wife, Bernice “Sis” Estes of Northwood; three children, Linda Estes of Brooklyn, Iowa, Gary Estes of Clear Lake and Connie Buss and her husband, Andy of Omaha, Nebraska; three grandchildren Wesley Bakken and his wife, Melissa of Elkhorn, Nebraska, Megan Estes of Humble, Texas and Allison Estes of Burnsville, Minnesota; five great-grandchildren, Rylie Bakken, Haylie Bakken, Sydney Bakken, Caleb Schlote and Elijah Latusik; and one sister, Hazel King and her husband, Joe of Mason City; and several nieces and nephews and special friends Bonnie Estes, John Heck and Brooke Claussen.

He was preceded in death by his parents.
