Gladys L. Holmlund, 90, of Lake Mills, Iowa, died
on Monday, November 5,
2001, at the Good Shepherd Health Center in Mason City.
Funeral
services were held on Friday, November 9, at the Salem Lutheran Church in Lake Mills,
with Rev. Kevin Mackey and Rev. Roger Dykstra officiating. Burial
was in the Elmwood Cemetery in Mason City.
Gladys was born on December 13, 1910 in Schaeffer, North Dakota, the
daughter of Einar and Mamie (Field) Lund. She was baptized and
confirmed in the Lutheran faith.
On December 4, 1932, she married William T. Holmlund in Albert Lea, Minnesota.
Together, they owned and operated The Union Store in Lake Mills from
1947 to 1976.
Gladys loved her family.
She is survived by her husband, William T. Holmlund
of Mason City;
children, Shirley and her husband, Brice Pierce of Thompson, Iowa,
Robert and his wife, Sandy Holmlund of Hudson, Iowa, Mary and her
husband, Charles Stumo of Northwood, Ronald and his wife, Gerrie
Holmlund of Readlyn, Iowa and David and his wife, Pat Holmlund of Buena
Vista, Colorado; 12 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; two sisters,
Lucille Frank of Mason City and Delores Palmquist of California; one
brother, Overan Lund of Richfield, Minnesota; two sisters-in-law, Marge Holmlund of Minneapolis, Minnesota
and Myrtle Holmlund of Mason City;
along with numerous nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
Gladys was preceded in death by her parents; one sister, Lenore; one
grandson, Craig Holmlund; and one great-grandson, Nels Stumo.

James Herman Tanner, 71,
of Northwood, died on Thursday, November 8, 2001,
at his home of cancer.
Funeral services were held on Monday, November
12, at the First Lutheran Church,
Northwood, with the Rev. Paul Holmer and the Rev. Allan Stoa
officiating. Interment was in the Sunset Rest Cemetery, Northwood.
The Conner Colonial Chapel, Northwood, was in charge of the
arrangements. Memorials may be directed to the Dialysis Center at
the West Campus of Mercy Medical Center, through the Mercy
Foundation.
Jim was born on December 18, 1929, in Eagle Grove, Iowa, to Frank and
Katherine (Wooster) Tanner. He graduated from the Eagle Grove Community
School in 1947 and then attended the Eagle Grove Community College. He
earned a football scholarship to Westmar College, where he later
graduated with a Bachelor's Degree in Education.
Jim married Helen Torkelson on November 17, 1950 in Humboldt, Iowa.
He
taught in the Ayrshire and Odebolt-Arthur Community Schools before
earning his Masters Degree in Education from the University of South
Dakota. Jim became Principal for the Boone Valley Community Schools
in Renwick, Iowa and then the Northwood-Kensett Community Schools.
During his career as an educator, Jim also coached football,
baseball, and girls and boys basketball. During the summertime and
after his retirement from education, Jim worked as a crop adjuster
for the Rain and Hail Insurance, American Agriculture Insurance, and
Great American Insurance.
Jim enjoyed playing, coaching and watching sports, hunting,
fishing, and gardening. He loved having his family around him and
was especially proud of his four granddaughters. Jim was a faithful
member of the First Lutheran Church, serving on the church council and
ushering for many years.
Jim is survived by his wife of 50 years, Helen of Northwood; one
son, Jim Tanner and Arlene Rosdahl of Northwood; three daughters,
Susan Tanner of Northwood, Sandy and Marty Aves of Manly and Sherry
Tanner of Glenwood, Iowa; and four granddaughters, Kristine and Steve
Lentz of Mason City, Jaime Tanner of Atlanta, Georgia and Allison and
Joanna Aves of Manly; two brothers, Frank Jr.
and Vernice Tanner of Eagle Grove and Fred and Lucille Tanner of
Hartley, Iowa; two sisters, Margaret and Don Martin of Eagle Grove and Marna Juvenal of Des Moines; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and one sister, Dorothy
Winter.

Leona M. Seater, 84, of Northwood, died
on Friday, November 9, 2001,
at the Lutheran Retirement Home in Northwood.
Funeral
services were held on Tuesday, November 13, at the Bolan United Methodist Church, Bolan,
Iowa, with Rev. Robert Cumings officiating. Interment was in the
Sunset Rest Cemetery, Northwood.
Leona was born on July 27, 1917 in Walnut, Nebraska, to Albert and Anna Runtsch. She married Robert W. Seater on December 14, 1938, at the Little
Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. They farmed north of Bolan and were
involved with purebred Angus cattle. Her hobbies were her love for
gardening, sewing and baking.
She is survived by her daughter, Carol Kipp and husband, Fred of
Albert Lea, Minnesota; daughter-in-law, Connie Hogen and husband, Paul
of Northwood; grandchildren, Kimm (Kipp) and husband, Tom Christenson
of Albert Lea, Minnesota, Jason and his wife, Melissa Seater of Wilmore, Kentucky
and David Seater of Lexington, Kentucky; great-grandchildren, Zachary,
Alyssa and Karli Christenson of Albert Lea, Minnesota and Cameron and
Christopher Seater of Lexington, Kentucky; two brothers, Clarence Runtsch
of Oak Ridge, Tennessee and Lawrence Runtsch of Lake City, Minnesota; and many
nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert W. Seater; parents,
Albert and Anna Runtsch; son, James A. Seater; and brother, Albert Runtsch.
The
Schroeder and Sites Funeral Home, Northwood, was in charge of
the arrangements.

Eileen Marie Mantz, 75, of Northwood, died
on Saturday, November 10,
2001, at the Muse-Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.
Funeral
services will be held at 10:30 a.m., on Saturday, November 17, at the First Lutheran
Church, Northwood, with Rev. Paul Holmer and
Rev. Allan Stoa officiating. Burial will be in the Howard Cemetery,
Elma, Iowa. Friends may call from 5-7:00 p.m., on Friday, and one hour
prior to the service time on Saturday at the church.
The Conner Colonial Chapel of Northwood, is in charge of the
arrangements.
Eileen Marie Mantz, was born on June 29, 1926 in Elma, Iowa, the
daughter of William and Lillie (Weers) Mantz.
She was baptized and reaffirmed the faith of her baptism through
confirmation in the St. Peter Lutheran Church in Elma. Eileen
attended and received her education in the Elma School System,
graduating from the Elma High School. She also attended Luther College
where she received her teaching degree in math and physical
education.
Eileen began her teaching career, which spanned 39 years.
She taught in Ossian, Armstrong and Northwood. Later in her teaching
career she took advanced studies at Colorado State University and
Carlton College. She then taught computer science as well as math.
Her interests included traveling, fishing, bridge and the field of
computers. Eileen was a fountain of information and was blessed with
a very keen memory. She was relied upon to answer many a question.
Eileen loved children and her church, and was a member of the First
Lutheran Church in Northwood and was faithful in her attendance
until her health made that impossible.
Left to cherish her memory are her three cousins, Marlene Dillon of
Cresco, Iowa, Lois Dinger of Riceville and Mayzee Wright of Osage;
also a very special and
long time friend, Alice Whitcome of Northwood. Eileen became a close
friend of the Whitcome family, and godmother of Julie Whitcome, Rees
and Molly Dillon.
Her parents preceded her in death.

Ruby B. Lunning, 78, of Lake Mills, Iowa, died
on Saturday, November 10,
2001, at the Bartels Lutheran Home in Waverly, Iowa.
Funeral
services will be held at 1:30 p.m., on Wednesday, November 14, at
the Salem Lutheran
Church in Lake Mills, with Rev. Roger Dykstra officiating.
Ruby B. Lunning, was born on December 30, 1922 in Hartland Township, Worth
County, near Northwood, the daughter of Ludvig S. and Gena J. (Lokken)
Loland. She was baptized and confirmed at the Silver Lake Lutheran
Church and attended country school. She worked as an Aid at St.
Joseph's Hospital in Mason City, Iowa.
On January 26, 1947, Ruby was married to Burton Curtis Lunning in Thompson, by
Rev. J. J. Skarpness. Together, they owned and managed the Arlington
Hotel in Lake Mills for over seven years. Burton died on September 1,
1992.
Ruby loved her family and her church where she was very active in
Ladies Aid, circles and quilting. She loved to travel. She was
regarded by many as a "good person".
Ruby is survived by her son, Chuck Lunning of Waverly;
granddaughter, Marie and her husband, Mike Kline of Cedar Rapids;
grandson, Scott Jensen of Eva Beach, Oahu, Hawaii; son-in-law, Ken
Jensen of Iowa Falls; sister-in-law, Melva and her husband, Elmer Tollagson of Thompson; two brothers-in-law, Wally and his wife, Tootie Lunning and Darrell and his wife, Carla Lunning,
both of Albert Lea, Minnesota; along with several nieces, nephews,
relatives and friends.
Ruby was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Burton; her
daughter, Linda Jensen; and one brother, Sigferd Loland.

Alden H. Gangstad, 75, of Madison, Wisconsin,
died on Friday, November 16, 2001.
Funeral services
were held on Monday, November 19, at the St Paul's Liberty Lutheran Church,
Deerfield, Wisconsin. The Rev. Dan Anderson officiated.
Military Rites were conducted by the Madison Firing Squad.
Al was born in Deerfield, Wisconsin, the son of Morris and Lillian (Kingland) Gangstad. He married Edna Allen of Mineral Point, Wisconsin. They made
their home in Deerfield and Madison. There are three daughters,
Linda (Bruce) Hughes of Verona, Wisconsin, Connie (Pat) O'Neil of
Middleton, Wisconsin and Karen (Bruce) Gilbertson of Prairie Du Sac,
Wisconsin and six grandchildren.
Mr. Gangstad served in the United States Navy during World War
II. After his honorable discharge he was employed as an
electrician and then a semi-driver for Neuendorf Trucking. After
retiring, he was a security driver for Loomis. He was a member
of Teamsters Local #695, the Deerfield Legion, the
Deerfield-Cambridge VFW Post #9424, the St. Paul's Liberty Lutheran
Church and past volunteer for the Deerfield Fire Dept. He
enjoyed spending his winters in Florida.
He is survived by his sister, Marion Simonson of Madison; his
brother, Lowell (Leila) of Northwood; his sister-in-law,
Eldora Gangstad of Deerfield; six nieces; and other relatives
and many friends.
Alden was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Edna; his
brother, Hamlin; his brother-in-law, Lloyd Simonson; and a niece,
Judy Simonson.

Maureen A. "Babe" Blood, 89, passed
away on Sunday, November 18, 2001, at the Thorne Crest
Retirement Center.
Funeral services were held at
2:00 p.m., on Wednesday, November 21, at the Bonnerup Funeral Service Chapel,
with Pastors Philip and Marilyn Peters officiating.
Maureen was born on February 5, 1912 in Albert Lea, Minnesota, to Harry
B. and Dena A. (Ellingson) Garrity. She graduated from the Albert
Lea High School and worked for many years at the former Wilson &
Co. meat processing plant in Albert Lea until her retirement.
She was a member of the First Lutheran Church, Albert Lea and a
long time member of the Elks Lodge, involvement with the Does.
She loved music and loved to play music. She formed a women's
singing group, The Kulana Ukettes, and entertained for many
happy years for various organizations and benefits. She loved
her Siamese cats and enjoyed the rest of her life.
She is survived by her nephew, Steven R. Johnson and wife, Linda
of Hayward, Minnesota and their three children, Mrs. Gary (Jill)
Erickson and their children, Justin and Julie; Anthony Johnson
and wife, Mary; Mrs. Mike (Stacy) Swank; niece, Mary Jo Engen
and her three children, Mrs. Gary (Melissa) Opsahl and their
children, Miraha Behle, Mick Behle, Colton Opsahl; Shane Engen
and wife, Suzi; Jason Engen and his son, Stephan; cousin, Pat
Garrity and other relatives.
She was preceded in death by her former husband, Russ Blood;
sister, Marvyl Johnson; and parents, Harry and Dena Garrity.

Al Lease
November 27, 2001
Al Lease, age 83, of Northwood, formerly of Storm Lake, died
suddenly on Wednesday, November 21, 2001, at his home at the Lutheran
Retirement Home Maple Court in Northwood.
Funeral
services were held on Monday, November 26, at the Grace Lutheran Church in Storm Lake, with
Pastor Steven Schulz officiating. Burial was in the Buena Vista
Memorial Park Cemetery, with full military honors by the Amvets Post
#66 of Storm Lake.
Alva Leonard Lease, was born on January 14, 1918, on a farm near Lawton,
Iowa, the son of Leonard and Edith Finna) Lease. He moved to
Cherokee at a young age and received his education in the public
schools graduating from the Wilson High School in Cherokee in 1938.
Al was married to Helen Margurite Hanson on June 23, 1940, at the
Presbyterian Parsonage in Cherokee.
He was employed at Knipes
Shoe Store for four years until entering the service on December 21,
1941.
He served in the United States Army Air Force from 1942 until 1944 as
a member of the 8th Air Force, 305th bomb group, 365th squadron,
out of Chelveston, England. He was on a combat crew as a flight
engineer and top-turret gunner on a B-17, completing 34 missions
over Europe.
Upon returning from the war the couple moved to Storm Lake in
1946, where Al was employed at Kallmer Sales until 1966. After
the business was sold he was employed at the Merrill Manufacturing
Company from 1967 until retiring in 1973. Al and Helen moved to
Northwood in July 2001 to be closer to their children.
Al was a long-time member of the Grace Lutheran Church of Storm
Lake. He will be remembered as a man of high integrity, who
served as a wonderful role model as husband and father.
He is survived by a son, Craig and his wife, Phyllis
of Northwood;
daughter, Karen Braesch and her husband, Tom of Prior Lake, Minnesota; five
grandsons, Travis and Anne Marie Lease of Port St. Lucie, Florida,
Brian and Becky Lease of La Crosse, Wisconsin, Matthew and Melissa Braesch
of
Sheboygan, Wisconsin, Jason and Tracy Braesch, Prior Lake, Minnesota and Jeff
and Joan Braesch of Burnsville, Minnesota; three great-granddaughters,
Arianna Kersten and Alexis and Haley Braesch; sister-in-law,
Lillian Johnson of Storm Lake; brother-in-law, Gunner Hanson of
Morris, Minnesota; and other extended family members and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Helen on October
17, 2001; brother, Glen; and by a nephew, Stephen.

Bernard "Bernie" Oebser, 65, died on Wednesday, November 21, 2001,
at his home, from a long courageous battle with cancer.
Funeral services were held on Monday,
at the Decorah Lutheran Church, Decorah.
Bernard "Bernie' Oebser, was born on February 19, 1936, the son of
Walter August and Agnes (Olson) Oebser in Menominee, Wisconsin. He
was baptized in 1936 and later confirmed his faith in 1949 at
the
Calvary Lutheran Church. Bernie attended Twin Oaks Country
School near Downsville, Wisconsin and then graduated from the Menominee
High School in 1952. Bernie attended Luther College from
1952-57 and then entered the Luther Seminary from 1957 to 1961 in
St. Paul, Minnesota and was ordained in 1961.
Bernie married Genevieve Moe on August 25, 1957, in the Colfax
Lutheran Church in Colfax, Wisconsin. After Gen's death in 1994, he
married Beverly Gross on February 24, 1996, at St. James Lutheran
Church in Mason City, Iowa. Bernie served the Trinity Lutheran
Church in Mason City from 1961 to 1964; Kanawha Lutheran Church in
Kanawha, Iowa from 1964 to 1971; Trinity Lutheran Church in New
Hampton, Iowa from 1971 to 1994 and St. Paul's Lutheran Church in
Lime Springs, Iowa from 1994 to 1998. He then retired and served as
an Interim Pastor for many churches in the Northeast Iowa
area.
Bernie loved people and being part of a crowd. He enjoyed
collecting jokes, telling stories and asking questions. He
especially loved to laugh. One of his many quotes was, "Birth
and death are inevitable, so why not just enjoy the interval".
Bernie's survivors include his wife, Beverly Oebser
of Decorah,
who passed away on Saturday, November 24, 2001; three
daughters, Jana Klosterboer and husband, John of Decorah,
Elizabeth Helstrom and husband, Jeff of Waconia, Minnesota and Emma Thonn and husband, Victor
of Waconia, Minnesota; one stepson, David
Gross and wife, Janet of Sioux City, Iowa; seven grandchildren; one
brother, Marlin Oebser and wife, Sharon of Downsville, Wisconsin; one
sister, Janis Johnson and husband, Richard of Germantown, Wisconsin;
and
many nieces and nephews.
Bernie was preceded in death by his parents, Walter and Agnes Oebser; and his first wife, Genevieve Oebser.

Douglas William Carnes, 38, died on Wednesday, November 21, 2001.
Funeral services were held on Monday,
November 26, at the Faith Lutheran Church, Homewood, Illinois. Rev. Dr.
Timothy Knauff officiated and burial was in the Oakland Cemetery,
Iowa City, Iowa.
Douglas was born on May 7, 1963 in Davenport, Iowa, the son of Du Wayne and Bonnie Carnes of Olympia Fields, Illinois.
He worked as Director of Finance for the Brunswick
Corporation. He was a member of the Illinois CPA Society, Muskies Unlimited and was an avid fisherman. He was a
volunteer for the Lake County Literacy Program. He spoke often
to elementary schools regarding life as a quadriplegic.
He was the
brother of Greg (Janice) Carnes of Rural Hall, North Carolina; uncle to
Lindsay and Morgan Carnes of Rural Hall, North Carolina; and grandson of
Douglas and Norma Carnes of Northwood; and the late Dr. William
and the late Irene Bakkum.

Beverly K. Oebser, 67, died on Saturday, November 24, 2001, at home following a long
battle with cancer.
Funeral services were held on Wednesday, November 28,
at the Decorah Lutheran Church, by Rev. James Glesne with burial in
the
Phelps Cemetery.
Beverly was born on May 7, 1934 in Albert Lea, Minnesota, to Cora (Olson)
and Alexander "Bliss" Swensrud. She was baptized on July 8, 1934
and later confirmed her faith on September 26, 1948, both at
the First
Lutheran Church Northwood, by Rev. J. W. Ylvisaker. Bev
attended Grove #5 Country School and graduated from the Northwood
High School in May of 1952. She attended Luther College in
Decorah from 1952 to 1956 graduating with a BA in Elementary
Education. Bev taught elementary school in Richfield, Minnesota from
1956 to 1958.
On June 27, 1959, Bev and Landis Gross of Decorah were married
at the First Lutheran Church in Northwood, by the Rev. A. Mikkelson.
They were the parents of one son, David.
Landis Gross was ordained into the Holy Ministry on June 25,
1961, into the then American Lutheran Church (ELCW). Together
they served parishes in several Iowa communities. Bev
continued to serve in a teaching capacity and taught Sunday
School for many years. She worked as a pre-school teacher in
Marion and Pocahontas, Iowa and as an elementary school aide in
Sheldon, Iowa. Until recently, she was a volunteer elementary
school aide in the Decorah Schools.
Bev was past President of the Decorah Lutheran WELCA, as well
as a member of the Priscilla Circle. She enjoyed quilting and
participated for several years in sewing quilts for EWALU
annual quilt auction. Bev also enjoyed making quilts and many
different sewing projects for her family.
Rev. Landis Gross died on May 19, 1992. After his loss, Bev
moved to Decorah. She enjoyed renewing old friendships and
participating in the many events at Luther College. She met
Rev. Bernie Oebser during this time. They were married on February
24, 1996, at the St. James Lutheran Church in Mason City.
Survivors include her son, David Gross and his wife, Janet of
Sioux City, Iowa and granddaughter, Hannah; step-children and
grandchildren, Jana and John Klosterboer, Zoe and Eli of
Decorah, Beth and Jeff Helstrom, McCall and Andrew, Emma and
Vic Thonn, Ethan and Elsa, all of Waconia, Minnesota; two aunts, Olga Thoen of Northwood and Amy Swensrud of Galesburg, Illinois;
and several
cousins and many friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; one brother, Kenneth Swensrud in infancy; her first husband, Landis Gross; one
grandson, Christian Gross; and her second husband, Bernie Oebser
on November 21, 2001.

Clifford "Dick" Wooding, 93, of Clarion, died
on Saturday,
November 24, 2001, at the USA Health Care Center in Clarion.
Funeral services were held on Tuesday, November 27, at the First
United Methodist Church in Clarion, with Rev. LaVonne Kaasa
officiating. Burial was in the Evergreen Cemetery in Clarion.
Clifford "Dick" Cea Wooding, the son of John and Elizabeth (Cea)
Wooding, was born on August 29, 1908 in rural Clarion. He
graduated from the Clarion High School and then spent time
helping his father farm their land near Lake Cornelia.
In October of 1929, Clifford married Elizabeth Archerd. The
couple had three children and made their home on the family
farm.
Dick was a member of the First United Methodist Church, the
Masonic Lodge, the Senior Citizens Center, he served on the
board of directors for the Clarion Co-op, and he belonged to
the ASCS Committee.
Dick is survived by his three children and their spouses,
Richard and Harriet Wooding of Belmond, Judy Peterson of
Webster City and Jerry and Marilyn Wooding of Rodgers, Arkansas; nine
grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; a sister, Lela Court of
Clarion; and a special friend, Regina Mosher of Clarion.
He was preceded in death by his parents; three wives,
Elizabeth, Velma and Marion; three brothers; one sister; a
grandson, Jeff; and great-grandson, Chris.

George E. Goldsmith, 86, of the Good Neighbor Home, Manchester, formerly
of Earlville, died on Sunday, November 25, 2001, at the Regional Medical Center, Manchester.
Funeral services were held on Wednesday, at the St. Joseph Catholic Church, Earlville,
with the Rev. Herb Tegeler officiating. Burial was in the church
cemetery.
George was born on March 29, 1915 in Earlville, son of Arthur and
Wilhelmina (Melchert) Goldsmith. He married Laura Nefzger on January
17, 1940 at the St. Joseph Church, Earlville. They farmed near
Earlville until retiring and moving into the city.
He was a former member of the Holy Name Society, Hopkinton Creamery
Board, St. Joseph School Board and the Farm Bureau. He served as
trustee of the St. Joseph Parish.
Surviving are his wife, Laura of the Good Neighbor Home, Manchester;
nine children, Carol Meyer (Bud) Kragenbrink of Northwood, M. Jean
(David) Fox of Webster City, Dennis (Kelli) Goldsmith of Port
Washington, Wisconsin, Larry (Regina) Goldsmith of Earlville, Pat (David) Vorwald
of Freeport, Illinois, Ken (Mary) Goldsmith of Cedar Rapids, Doris
(John) Nielson of New Berlin, Wisconsin, Connie Goldsmith of Carlsbad, Minnesota and
Paul (Leslie) Goldsmith of Creston; 23 grandchildren; five
great-grandchildren; and five sisters, Mary (John) Kupferschmidt of
Tucson, Arizona, Mildred Kramer of Hopkinton, Betty (Henry) Ehrlich and
Glen (Ray) Olberding, both of Dyersville and Nellie (Robert) Krapfl
of
New Vienna.
He was preceded in death by two grandchildren, Joseph Meyer and
Patrick Goldsmith; two sisters, Margaret Kapler and Delores Nefzger;
and four brothers, Floyd, James, Fred and Arthur Jr.

Dana Marie Aswegan, age 9, of Northwood, passed away
early Monday morning, November 26, 2001, at the Barnes Jewish
Children's Hospital in St. Louis, Missouri, from complications from
surgery.
Funeral
services were held on Friday, November 30, at the Northwood United Methodist Church,
Northwood, with Rev. Richard Jensen officiating. Burial was in
the State Line Cemetery, rural Northwood.
Dana was born on March 28, 1992, at the Northwood Fire
Department. She was brought into this world with the help of
the Northwood firemen. She attended the Northwood-Kensett
Elementary School in the 3rd grade. Here Dana acquired many
friends. She had many interests including crafts, riding
horses, four wheeling, farming, sewing, coloring, watching
cartoons, seeing friends, and spending time with family. Dana
had a great sense of humor as well as a genuine concern for
others before herself.
She is survived by her parents, Bruce and Joann Aswegan of
Northwood; one brother, Nickolas age 12, at home; her maternal
grandparents, Charles and Phyllis O'Neill of Nashua, Iowa and
her paternal grandparents, John and Mary Aswegan of Allison,
Iowa; also surviving are aunts, uncles, cousins and many
friends.
The
Schroeder & Sites Funeral Home, Northwood, was in charge
of the arrangements.

Richard D. Slattum, 73, of Joice, Iowa, died
on Tuesday, November
27, 2001 at his home.
Memorial
services were held on Monday, at the Bethany Lutheran Church in Joice, with Rev.
Bill Peters officiating. Burial was in the Concordia Cemetery in
rural Joice.
Richard Dale Slattum, died at his home in
rural Joice, where he was born on March 28, 1928, the son of
Clarence G. and Lillie (Wogen) Slattum. He attended the Clark
School in Bristol Township, until 8th grade and graduated from
the
Joice High School in 1945.
He enlisted and served in the United States Navy. Richard
married Janell Tweed on December 19, 1948, at the Beaver Creek Lutheran
Church in rural Joice. After attending Iowa State University,
he returned to the Slattum farm in rural Joice.
He farmed for
many years, and then worked at the Farmers Savings Bank in Joice.
Richard was an active member of the Beaver Creek Lutheran Church
in rural Joice, where he was baptized and confirmed. Later he
was an active member of the Bethany Lutheran Church in Joice. He
served as Vice President of the Iowa Farmers Union and was
also a member of the American Legion, first in Joice and later
in the Otto Chose Post #235 in Lake Mills.
Richard enjoyed spending time at Pelican Lake in northern
Minnesota with family and friends. He also enjoyed following
his favorite sports teams, particularly the Iowa State
Cyclones.
Richard is survived by his daughters, Amy and her husband, Jim Twetten
of Ames and Ada and her husband, Mike Larson of Red
Wing, Minnesota; five grandchildren; two brothers, Cecil Slattum and
his wife, Barbara and Darrel Slattum and his wife, Mary; three
sisters, Verna and her husband, Floyd Skellenger, Shirley and
her husband, Kenneth Chodur and Norma and her husband, Jerry Alvey; several brothers and sisters-in-law;
and many nieces and nephews.
Richard was preceded in death by his parents, Clarence and
Lillie Slattum; wife, Janell; and son, Jeffrey.

Orville J. Nesset, 78, of Glenville, Minnesota, died on Wednesday, November 28, 2001, at the Albert Lea
Medical Center, Albert Lea, Minnesota.
Funeral services were held on Saturday, December 1, at the First Lutheran Church, Glenville.
The Rev. Mark Wendland officiated. Burial was in the Greenwood
Cemetery.
Orville was born in Glenville on March 24, 1923, the son of
John and Olga (Sandvold) Nesset. He attended elementary school
in Gordonsville, Minnesota and the Northwood High School in Northwood.
On August 31, 1953, he married Irene Diesman in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.
Orville farmed for 37 years in the Glenville area, worked for
Winnebago Industries in Forest City for 17 years, Bricelyn
Canning Plant for two years and H & H Pallet for 11 years.
Orville was a boxing enthusiast and as a young man was a
member of the Minnesota Golden Gloves Boxing organization. He
was also a horse lover and enjoyed going to Waverly to attend
horse sales.
Survivors include his wife, Irene of Glenville, Minnesota; four
daughters, Ann Brown and her husband, Tim of Backhus, Minnesota, Nancy Poore and her husband, Donald of Albert Lea, Minnesota, Sally Soesbe
and her husband, Willis of Clarion, Iowa and Charlotte Hennigar and
her husband, Scott of Clarion, Iowa; four sons, John Nesset, Sky
Nesset, Robert Nesset and his fiancée, Dawn Nelson, Barney
Nesset, all of Glenville; 13 grandchildren; eight
great-grandchildren; three sisters, Beverly Kral of Faribault,
Minnesota, Betty Perkins and Kathryn Olson, both of Albert Lea; one
brother, Lincoln Nesset of Albert Lea, Minnesota; and several nieces and
nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Olga Nesset;
one sister, Lorraine Tverberg; one daughter-in-law, Julie
Nesset; one nephew, Larry Kral; and one uncle, Morris Sandvold.
