Donald Gaskill

July 10, 2001

Donald C. Gaskill, 86, of Northwood, died on Monday, July 2, 2001, at the Lake Mills Care Center, Lake Mills.

Funeral services were held on Friday, July 6, at the Bethany Lutheran Church in Joice, with Pastor Elwin Walvatne officiating. Burial was in the Sunset Rest Cemetery in Northwood.

Donald Cleo Gaskill, was born on June 11, 1915 in rural Fertile, Iowa, the son of Ulysses and Carrie (Iverson) Gaskill. He attended and received his education in a rural country school in Fertile, graduating from the Fertile High School in 1933. He married Leone Florence Parker on March 16, 1939 in rural Joice. After their marriage they farmed in rural Fertile, Hanlontown and rural Northwood. Don enjoyed sports.

He is survived by his children, Phyllis Hrubetz of Mason City, David Gaskill of Adams, Minnesota, Wayne Gaskill of Austin, Minnesota, Mike Gaskill and his wife, Deb of Lake Mills, Ray Gaskill and his wife, Ree of Lake Mills and Bob Gaskill and his wife, Terry of Marshalltown; and twenty-five grandchildren.

Don was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Leone; five brothers; three sisters; two half-sisters; two grandchildren, Jedd and Mike Gaskill; and a son-in-law, David Hrubetz.

Maurice Severson

July 10, 2001

Maurice Raymond Severson, 89, of Northwood, died on Wednesday, July 4, 2001, at the Lutheran Retirement Home in Northwood.

Funeral services were held on Monday, July 9, at the First Lutheran Church, Northwood, with Rev. Allan Stoa officiating. Burial was in the Sunset Rest Cemetery in Northwood. The Conner Colonial Chapel of Northwood, was in charge of the arrangements.

Maurice Raymond Severson, was born on a farm in Kensett Township, Worth County, Iowa, near Northwood on May 13, 1912, the son of Martin E. and Randene "Dena" (Mehus) Severson. He was baptized and reaffirmed the faith of his baptism through confirmation at the South Shell Rock Lutheran Church, rural Northwood. He attended and received his education in the rural Kensett #3 and later at Northwood.

He married Gladys Lucille Heltne on June 28, 1936, at the Silver Lake Lutheran Church, rural Northwood. She preceded him in death on November 1, 1996. After their marriage together they farmed southwest of Northwood, until their retirement in 1977 and moving to Northwood in 1981.

Maurice was active in the First Lutheran Church as a council member and also on the board with the rural school system. He also was a member of the Sons of Norway at Albert Lea, Minnesota and delivered for Meals on Wheels. He enjoyed horses and loved to farm.

Left to cherish his memory are his children, Marilyn and her husband, Antonio Sanchez of Walnut Creek, California, Ruth and her husband, LeRoy Simonson of Rolfe, Iowa and Gene and his wife, Janet Severson of Northwood; 10 grandchildren; sister, Gladys Baldwin of Cedar Falls, Iowa; and many nieces and nephews as well as other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his wife; his parents; a son, Arlo; and a brother in infancy.
