Vera Evangeline Blakestad, 99, of Northwood, died
on Saturday,
December 1, 2001, at the Lutheran Retirement Home, Northwood.
Funeral services were held on Tuesday, December 4, at the
First Lutheran Church, Northwood, with Rev. Paul Homer
officiating. Interment was
in the Sunset Rest Cemetery, Northwood. The
Conner Colonial Chapel, Northwood, was in charge of
the arrangements.
Vera was born on November 1, 1902 in Farley, Iowa, the daughter of
Frank and Abbie (Garner) Clark. She attended school in Farley
and the Epworth Seminary and received her BA Degree from Cornell
College in June 1925. Following graduation, she taught in
Gibson, Oneida and Otranto, Iowa.
She married Sophus Blakestad on September 27, 1930 at Webster City.
The couple resided in Norwalk where Sophus was the high school
principal, later moving to the Blakestad farm near Otranto and
in the fall of 1939, to Northwood. She resumed teaching again
for a period of time during World War II at the Northwood High
School.
She was a long-time members of the First Lutheran Church and very
active in earlier years serving on many church organizations
in various capacities. She enjoyed working in her garden, the
changing season and visiting with relatives and friends.
Survivors include sons, Neil Blakestad and his wife, Beth
of Two
Harbors, Minnesota and Wallace Blakestad and his wife, Marie
of
Humboldt, Iowa; five grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Sophus
in
1997; and her brother, Lloyd.

Alvin R. Sage, 86, of Algona, died on Monday, December 3, 2001, at the Good
Samaritan Center in Algona.
Graveside services were held on
Thursday, December 6, at the Sunset Rest Cemetery, with the Rev. Dr. Mark E. Homer of
the
First Lutheran Church of Algona officiating.
Alvin Russell Sage, was born in rural Worth County on June 10, 1915,
to Theodore Sage and Emma Tenold Sage. He was baptized at the Shell
Rock Lutheran Church in rural Northwood. His father died when he was
four years old and Al, along with his two sisters and mother moved
to Northwood. He was confirmed at the First Lutheran Church in
Northwood.
He received his education in the Northwood School System and after
graduation from high school in 1934 he attended the University of
Iowa in Iowa City for two years and was a student at the Mason City
Junior College and later worked for a butter distributor in Mason
City.
He enlisted in the Army Signal Corp in 1942 and was sent to the southwest
Pacific Theatre. He was discharged at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, in
January of 1946.
He worked on the family farm until coming to Algona in 1947. Alvin
worked for Pratt Electric and Kossuth Radio and eventually opened
his own radio and TV Shop, Al Sage TV.
Al was a well known face in the downtown Algona community and was a
charter member of the Rotary Club for 25 years, also a charter
member of the Northwood VFW Post and a lifetime member of the Algona
VFW Post. He was a member of the First Lutheran Church in Algona.
Survivors include one sister, Evelyn Thompto of Northwood.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and one sister, Irma
Petersen.

Albert J. "Al" Ingebritson, 89, died on Thursday, December 6, 2001, at
the Lake Mills Care Center.
Memorial services will be held at 2:00 p.m., on
Saturday, January 12, 2002, at the Salem Lutheran Church in Lake Mills,
with Rev. Roger Dykstra officiating.
Inurnment will take place in the Salem Lutheran Cemetery in Lake Mills.
Al was born on January 27, 1912 in Lincoln Township, Winnebago County,
Iowa. He was the sixth child born of 11 children and grew up on
various farms in Winnebago County. He met Irma Weed and they married
on January 5, 1936. Al and Irma lived in Thompson, Iowa for several years
before moving to Albert Lea, Minnesota during World War II, where he worked
for a company that made Colman lanterns for the army.
In 1946, they
assumed the responsibility of managing Weed's Jewelry Store due to
the ill health of his father-in-law, Walter Weed. Mr. Weed taught
him the watch making skills and he then went to school to become
licensed. He and his wife, Irma, managed the store until it was sold. They
then moved to Arizona, where he worked as a jewelry salesman, and
settled in Tucson, Arizona to help their daughter and son-in-law while
they were in college.
In 1962 they moved to Torrance, California, where he worked in sales and for
North American, an aerospace company. They lived there until they
returned to Lake Mills in 1978.
After returning to Lake Mills he had
several jobs, the last one working for Mr. Jerry Brunsvold at the
cement plant. He worked there until he was in his early 80's.
In December 1995 his wife, Irma (Weed) Ingebritson passed away, and
shortly thereafter, he moved to the Care Center in Lake Mills where
he remained until his death.
He is survived by two brothers, Marion and Palmer of Lake Mills;
sister, Margaret (Toodie) Sader of Inver Grove Heights, Minnesota; his
daughter, Kay and husband, Wayne Ganzel of Sun City West, Arizona; one
granddaughter; and three great-grandchildren.
Al was preceded in death by his wife; his parents, John and Christie Ingebritson; three brothers; and four sisters.

Betty
Beatrice (Pugh) Sarno, 84 of West Des Moines, Iowa, formerly of Lake
Mills, died on Sunday, December 9, 2001, at the Mercy Medical Center in Des
Moines.
A Mass of Christian Burial was held on Thursday,
at the St. Patrick's Catholic Church
in Lake Mills, with Father Craig Steimel officiating, with military
rites done by the Lake Mills Otto/Chose Post #235. Burial was in the Ft. Snelling National Cemetery, Minneapolis, Minnesota.
Betty Beatrice Pugh, was born on October 5, 1917 in Milford, Iowa. She
graduated from high school in Milford and then received her degree
as a registered nurse from Methodist Hospital in Sioux City in 1939.
After working in Sioux City as a nurse, she enlisted in the United
States Army in 1941 and served as a Registered Nurse in the
Aleutian Islands of Alaska, Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri and Fort Benning,
Georgia, attaining a rank of First Lieutenant.
While at Fort Benning, Betty met Eugene G. Sarno who was serving in
the Army Criminal Investigation Corps. They were married on September
13, 1945, in Columbus, Georgia.
Following World War II, Betty and Eugene
moved to Eugene's home in New York City where Betty worked at the
Veteran's Administration Hospital in the Bronx. In 1946, they moved
to Des Moines where Betty worked at the Veterans Administration
Hospital and Eugene attended the Drake University School of Law. In
1949, they moved to Lake Mills where Eugene opened his law practice
and their son, Eugene Michael was born. While living in Lake Mills,
Betty worked as a registered nurse at the Forest City Hospital, Naeve Hospital in Albert Lea and as a nursing supervisor at St.
Joseph Mercy Hospital in Mason City, retiring in 1974.
During their
residence in Lake Mills, Betty and Eugene cherished the community
and their fine friends. In 1994, Betty moved to West Des Moines to
reside closer to her son and his family.
She was a civic leader and active member of the Saint Patrick's Catholic
Church. Being an avid bridge player, Betty was constantly involved
with her many card groups. Betty and Gene loved to travel, and over
the years they saw much of the world. Despite her far-ranging
travels, the most enjoyable trip for Betty was visiting her
childhood haunts at Lake Okoboji. Betty's ultimate love was her
family of which she was extremely proud.
She is survived by her son, Dr. E. Michael Sarno and her daughter-in
law, Georgia Sarno, both of West Des Moines; her grandchildren,
Christopher Sarno and his wife, Samara of Coralville, Iowa, Bradley Sarno of Denver, Colorado and Laura Sarno of West Des Moines.
Betty was preceded in death by her parents, Icle (Hansen)
Pugh and Jesse Pugh; and her husband, Eugene Sarno, whom she missed
dearly.

Sylvester J. "Sonny" Dasch, 64, of Manly, died on Wednesday, December 12,
2001, at the Muse-Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.
A
Funeral Mass was held on Monday, December 17, at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in
Manly, with Rev. David Kucera officiating. Burial was in the Sacred
Heart Catholic Cemetery in Manly, with military graveside honors by
the Edward Tosel American Legion Post 110, Manly.
Sylvester J. "Sonny" Dasch, was born on March 1, 1937 in Osage, the
son of John and Mabel (Blonigan) Dasch. Sylvester "Sonny" was
baptized and confirmed at the St. Peter's Catholic church in New Haven.
He attended and received his education in the Rudd Community Schools
from 1946 until 1953. He also attended and graduated from the Holy
Family Catholic High School in 1956. After graduating from high
school he was inducted into the U.S. Navy in 1956, serving aboard
the USS Intrepid and the USS Roosevelt until his honorable
discharge in 1960. While in the Navy, Sonny received an Airline
Mechanic Certificate.
Sonny and his friend, Helen bought and ran the
Rail Club until their business burnt in Manly's big fire in
1964. Not willing to give up, Sonny along with his father and friends
tore down three burnt buildings and a new Rail Club came to be Manly's hot spot. Sonny also worked at Decker's Meats in Mason City,
Ruan in Hanlontown and Whitt Farms on B-20 in Mason City, retiring
after a long battle with cancer. Sonny also earned a small mechanic
degree from NIACC in Mason City.
He married Helen Ulrich on June 5, 1962, at the Sacred Heart
Catholic Church in Manly.
He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and the Edward Tosel American Legion Post 110 in Manly and the Moose Lodge in
Mason City.
Left to cherish his memory is his wife, Helen (Coffee Lady) of Manly;
children, Wanda McLaughlin and her husband, Patrick of Manly, Michael
Ulrich and his wife, Janet of Mason City and Sonja Dasch-Lawson and her
husband, Mark of Plymouth; six grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; mother-in-law, Irene Cilfone of Manly; sisters,
Theresa "Terry" Gifford and husband, James of Mason City, Camilla Ent
and husband, James of Grinnell and Nancy Wasicek of Mason City; a
brother, Gary Dasch and his wife, Janet of Mason City; sister-in-law,
Lorie Dasch of Des Moines; 12 nieces and nephews; many cousins and
dear friends, especially Chuck and Sandy Whitt and family of Mason
City.
He was preceded in death by his father and mother, John and Mable; a
brother, Philip on August 12, 2001; step-father, Willard "Pete"
Lockwood; and grandparents; and many relatives and friends.

Florence
Anna Bottleman, 81, of Northwood, died on Thursday, December 13, 2001, at
her home in Northwood.
Funeral services were held on Monday, December
17, at the First Lutheran Church, Northwood, with
Rev. Paul Holmer officiating. Burial was in the Sunset Rest
Cemetery, Northwood.
Florence Anna Bottleman, was born on September 1, 1920 in Otranto
Township, Mitchell County, Iowa, to William and Matilda (Hanson) Gentz. She married Elmer Bottleman on July 1, 1942 in Unionville,
Missouri. She raised her family and worked along side her husband, Elmer
on the farm for 26 years. After moving to town in 1967 she worked at
Mercy Hospital as a nursing assistant. She also worked at Carroll
George Inc. until retiring. She was a member of the First Lutheran
Church in Northwood.
She is survived by her children, Duwayne and wife, Cheryl Bottleman
of Northwood, Donald and his wife, Janet Bottleman of Grafton, Mary
Steffenson and her husband, David of Watertown, Minnesota, Ruth Gordon and
her husband, Dennis of Fond du Lac, Wisconsin, Karen Pixley and her husband,
Galen of Northwood and Sharon Hartwell of Clear Lake, Iowa; two
sisters, Dorothy Low and Wilma Thompson, both of Northwood; two
brothers, Raymond Gentz and William Gentz, both of Northwood; 15
grandchildren; and 21 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Elmer;
and two
brothers, Art and Roy Gentz.
The
Schroeder & Sites Funeral Home, Northwood, was in charge of
the arrangements.

Eugene Francis "Gene" Kramer, 77, of Des Moines, formerly of
Mason City, died on Friday, December 14, 2001, at the Veteran's Hospital in
Des Moines.
A
Funeral Mass was held on Monday, December 17, at the Hogan Bremer Colonial Chapel, with the
Rev. Dennis Cahill of the Holy Family Catholic Church officiating.
Interment was in the Elmwood St. Joseph Cemetery, Mason City.
Gene was born in Alexander, Minnesota in 1924, the oldest son of Henry and
Helen (Rieman) Kramer. He was a graduate of the Holy Family High School
in Mason City. He entered the United States Army in 1941, serving
with distinction in World War II, receiving the Bronze Star and
Purple Heart.
In 1947, he married Donna (Coziah) Kramer Baumgartner, presently of
Garner, Iowa. They were blessed with seven children.
Gene was a graduate of Hamilton Business School. He lived and
worked in many North Iowa communities including Mason City,
Northwood, Lake Mills, Emmetsburg and Garner. He was a past
Commander of the VFW and American Legion and member of the Holy Family
Catholic Church.
Gene is survived by his wife, Donna; children, Helen (Kramer) Melin of Gulfport, Mississippi, Eugene Kramer Jr. of Lebanon, Ohio, Diana
(Kramer) Tate of Broken Arrow, Oklahoma, Allen (Kramer) Baumgartner of Des
Moines, Carol (Kramer) Baumgartner Weidner of Omaha, Nebraska, John Kramer
of Mason City and Julie (Kramer) Baumgartner Sorenson of Woden, Iowa; 14 grandchildren; three
great-grandchildren; two sisters, Sylvia Twiss and Rudella
Venechuk; and a brother, Roland Kramer.
Preceding him in death were his sister, LuAnne Stoffer; and grandson, Steven William Kramer.

Ryan
Patrick Steffanni, 19, of Northwood, died on Saturday, December 15, 2001, at
his home.
A
memorial service will be held on Friday, December 21, in Norwalk,
Ohio, where inurnment will take place at the Hester Cemetery in
Bronson Township. The Walker Funeral Home, Norwalk,
is in charge of those arrangements.
A local memorial service will be held at 11:00
a.m., on Saturday, January 26, 2002, at the United Methodist Church in
Northwood, with Rev. Richard Jensen officiating. Friends may call one hour prior
to the service time on Saturday at the church. The
Conner Colonial Chapel, Northwood, is in charge of the local
arrangements.
Ryan was born on June 17, 1982 in Norwalk, Ohio, the son of Patrick
and Kristie (Jellinger) Steffanni. He attended school at the Western Reserve
High School in Norwalk, where he was active in show choir, track,
basketball, wrestling, football, and baseball. Ryan was currently a
student at the Northwood-Kensett High School, where he was also active in
football and baseball. He loved all kinds of sports and enjoyed
camping and going to concerts with his brother. Ryan was a very
loving boy who will be missed greatly by all his family and friends.
Ryan is survived by his parents of Northwood; three siblings,
Michael Petersen and his wife, Andrea of Norwalk, Ohio, Megan Steffanni of Norwalk, Ohio and Dane Steffanni of Northwood; his
maternal grandmother, Glorian Kennedy of Albert Lea, Minnesota; his
paternal grandmother, Jeanne Steffanni of Wakerman, Ohio; eight
aunts and uncles, Jim Steffanni and his wife, Penny of Norwalk,
Charlie Steffanni and his wife, Pat of Sandusky, Ohio, Nancy
Schuster and her husband, Paul of Elyria, Ohio, Kevin Steffanni of
Cleveland, Ohio, Mary Ann Steffanni (Ryan's godmother) of Elyria,
Ohio, Wesley Jellinger (Ryan's godfather) of Norwalk, Ohio, Jeannie
Grubbe of Kensett and Loreen Pfeifer of Austin, Minnesota; three nieces, Keily, Makenzie and Delaney; one nephew, Malik; and many cousins.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Kyle on January 4, 2001; his
grandfathers, Loren B. Jellinger and David Steffanni Sr.; uncle,
David Steffanni Jr.; and a cousin, Shane Steffanni.

Marcele JoAnne Dishon Jensen, 63,
of Northwood, died on Saturday, December 15,
2001, at the North Iowa Mercy Health Center, Mason City.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, December 19, at 10:30 a.m.,
at the First Lutheran Church, Northwood, with Rev. Paul Holmer
officiating. Burial will be in the Sunset Rest Cemetery, Northwood.
Marcele was born on January 31, 1938 in Northwood, Iowa, to Ralph and
Bertha (Kruse) Dishon. She attended school in Mason City and moved
to the Northwood area in 1956. She married William Erving Jensen on
November 7, 1958.
Marcele was a babysitter for many years. She also did
dog grooming in her home. She was employed at TownMart for many
years and due to health problems had to quit.
She enjoyed being with family and friends. She also enjoyed fishing,
crocheting, cooking and baking. She enjoyed her grandchildren and
great-grandchildren and spending time with her mother and having
coffee with her.
Survivors include her husband, William; two children, Denise Kalvig
and Dennis Jensen, both of Northwood; her mother, Bertha Dishon of
Northwood; grandchildren, Eric Jensen, Heather and Nicholas Kalvig,
all of Northwood, Phillip and Krystal Jensen from Mason City;
great-grandchildren, Elexis Marie Carrison and Marisa Renae Wendel,
both of Northwood; one sister, Jeanette Jacks and her husband, Larry
of Eaton, Colorado; sister-in-law, Dorothy Lorentzen of Weslaco,
Texas;
brother-in-law, Gordy Jensen and his wife, Faye of Albert Lea, Minnesota;
and
many nieces, nephews and friends.
She was preceded in death by her father, Ralph Dishon;
and father-in-law
and mother-in-law, Benjamin and Hattie Jensen.
The

Gene K. Mehus, 74, of Glenville, died on Sunday, December 16, 2001, at his home in Glenville, surrounded
by his immediate family.
Funeral services will be held at 1:30
p.m., on Wednesday, December 19, at the Glenville First Lutheran Church.
Rev. Mark Wendland will officiate.
Interment will be in the Glenville First Lutheran Cemetery. Military
honors will be accorded by the area servicemen's organizations.
Eugene was born on May 19, 1927, to Nels and Inga (Burkhow)
Mehus in Hayward. He was a lifelong resident of the Glenville area.
Gene served in the United States Navy during World War II and was
stationed on Okinawa. On July 4, 1943, he married Audrey Wolff at the
First Lutheran Church in Glenville. Gene was employed for many years
at Scotsman and Queen Products.
Gene enjoyed buying and repairing antique clocks and fixing many
others things. He also enjoyed Amtrak trips, bus trips, antique
auctions and old-time music.
Survivors include his wife, Audrey of Glenville; children, Pat Avery
and husband, Bill of Glenville, Cindy Davis and husband, Gene of
Glenville, Doug Mehus and wife, Kelly of Austin and Scott Mehus and
wife, Laurie of Buffalo City, Wisconsin; eight grandchildren; brothers and
sisters, Irene Gordon of Glenville, Arlo Mehus of Coronado, California,
Virgil Mehus and wife, Helen of Rushford, Darlene Dobberstein and
husband, Carl of New Richland, Marion Mehus and wife, Audrey of
Glenville, Herbert Mehus of Albert Lea and Donna Nelson and husband,
Dennis of Glenville; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; grandson, Adam; and brother,
Glen.

Paul
F. Walk, 75, of Kensett, died on Monday, December 17, 2001, one and a half
miles east of Bolan.
Memorial services were held on Saturday, December 22, at the United Methodist
Church, Bolan, Iowa, with Rev. Robert Cummings officiating. Inurnment
was in the Kensett Cemetery, Kensett.
Paul was born on June 12, 1926, on the family farm in rural Bolan, the son
of Henry and Louise (Junkermeier) Walk. He attended a Bolan Country
School and the Northwood High School.
Paul married Arliene Borchardt on September 28, 1952, in the Bolan United
Methodist Church, Bolan. To this union six children were born. They farmed and
raised their family east of Bolan.
He enjoyed his family, grandchildren, fishing, woodworking and
tinkering around the farm. He was a member of the Bolan United Methodist
Church.
He is survived by his six children, Janiece Kinzle and her husband, Kreg
of Glenwood, Iowa, Joyce Simanton and her husband, Robert of Niles, Michigan, Judeen Keiran and her husband, Craig
of Des Moines, Jerry Walk and
his wife, Tracey of Council Bluffs, Debra Teachout and her husband,
Jim of Amarillo, Texas and Kevin Walk and his wife, Bonnie of Glenwood, Iowa;
twelve grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Arliene
on April 30,
2001; three brothers, Gilbert, George and John Walk; and four sisters,
Martha Dittburner, Freida Ingamells, Prudence Wilde and Luella Walk.

Rev. J. Erik Holmer, 88, of Algona, died on Monday, December 17, 2001, at
the Kossuth Regional Health Center in Algona, following a short illness.
Funeral
services will
be held at 10:00 a.m., on Thursday, December 27, at the First Lutheran Church in Algona
and again at 10:30 a.m., on Friday, December 28, at the Salem Lutheran Church in
Moline, Illinois. Both services will be officiated by his sons, the Rev. Dr. Mark E. Holmer and the Rev. Paul Holmer.
Visitation will be from 8:30 a.m. to the time of the service at the First Lutheran
Church in Algona. Burial will be in the Calvary Lutheran Cemetery in New
Windsor, Illinois.
Johan Erik Homer, was born on May 16, 1913 at Kodikanal, India, to Thure
and Celia (Bjork) Holmer. He received his education in the Kodikanal
Schools and graduated from the Kodikanal High School. Erik lived in
India until age 19, when he moved to the United States and attended
Augustana College in Rock Island, Illinois, where he was graduated in
1936. In 1940, he graduated from Augustana Seminary.
Erik met Anita Rae Wahlen while attending Augustana College and they were married July 5, 1941,
in Gary, Indiana.
Erik served in
various parishes, Salem Lutheran Church in Creston, Iowa from 1940 to 1945;
Trinity Lutheran Church in Buffalo, New York from 1945 to 1952; and at
the Salem
Lutheran Church in Moline, Illinois from 1952 until retirement in 1979.
Survivors include his children, the Rev. Dr. Mark E. Holmer and
wife, Linnea of Algona, Rev. Paul Holmer and wife, Christine of
Northwood and Dr. Shari Holmer-Lewis and husband, Samuel of
Evanston, Illinois; four grandchildren; two
great-grandchildren; and a sister, Ruth Friberg and husband, Rev. Dr.
Daniel Friberg of Minneapolis, Minnesota.
Erik was preceded in death by his wife, Anita Rae on April 10, 1994;
and three brothers.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the First Lutheran
Church in Northwood, the First Lutheran Church in Algona and the Salem
Lutheran Church in Moline, Illinois.

Marion D. McEnelly, 79,
died on Saturday, December 22, 2001, at the Good Samaritan Center in Forest City.
Funeral services
were held on
Wednesday, December 26, at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Forest City,
with the Rev. Michelle Simonson officiating.
Marion D. McEnelly, was born in Kensett, Iowa, on January 20, 1922, the
daughter of Carl L. and Helen A. (Tollefson) Lewis. She received her
education there, graduating from the Kensett High School. She also
attended Waldorf College in Forest City.
She married Norman D. McEnelly on April 11, 1941 in Mason City.
She was a member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church and the Kum Along
Senior Citizens Club. Marion loved to go fishing and camping. She
liked to travel, enjoyed quilting and had an extensive cardinal
collection.
She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother who treasured time
spent with her family.
She is survived by her children, Saundra R. Meade and
husband, Don of Forest City, Gary C. McEnelly and wife, Dona of
Baxter, Minnesota and Kathleen A. Olson and husband, Robert of Forest
City; six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; three
step-grandchildren; and a special friend, Patricia McEnelly of
Chaska, Minnesota.
She was preceded in death by her parents; and her husband, Norman
who died in 1989.

Trulie Rosalyn Seuser Sime, 95,
died on Sunday, December 23, 2001, at the St. John's Lutheran Home,
Albert Lea, Minnesota.
Funeral services
were held on
Thursday, December 27, at the Silver Lake Lutheran Church, rural
Northwood, with Pastor Steve Smith officiating.
Burial was in the Silver Lake Lutheran Cemetery.
Trulie was born on October 7, 1906, on a farm near Gordonsville, Minnesota. Her
parents were Mary and Charles Seuser. She was the youngest of ten
children. Two died before she was born. Her seven brothers and
sisters whom she loved, all lived nearby all her life and since are
deceased. They were Gay, Jess, Nettie, Rea, Charles, Alice and
Zelma. Trulie's father contracted Typhoid Fever when it raged in the
Midwest. He died in his forties. Trulie was only 2 years old at the
time of her father's death.
She liked horseback riding and was a good rider. She loved poetry
and could repeat long poems even late in life.
She attended the Glenville High School. When she was out of school, she
worked for a family and later met Elmer Sime, whom she married.
Elmer was a good farmer and together they farmed and raised four
children. Two children, Vivan and Virgil, passed away at birth. Her
four loving children are Warren, John, Nadine and Tom.
She was active in the Silver Lake ladies Aid and was
President in
1958. Trulie canned fruits and vegetables every summer and baked large
cakes for each birthday. She was a wonderful cook.
While here children were attending college, she worked at the Hotel
Albert and the Holiday Inn as a salad lady. She lived her last seven
years with her son, Tom and his wife, Betty.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Elmer; a daughter-in-law,
Janice (Boyken) Sime; and a grandson, Warren "Wes" Sime II. She was a
grandmother of 13 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

Dennis
Keith Lien, 52, of Joice, Iowa, died on Monday, December 24, 2001, at his home in
Joice.
Funeral services were held on Friday, December 28, at
the Bethany Lutheran Church in
Joice. Rev. Bill Peters officiated. Burial was in the Concordia Cemetery
in rural Joice, with military rites by the Lake Mills Otto/Chose
Post #235.
Dennis Keith Lien, was born on August 27, 1949 in Forest City, Iowa. His
parents were Orvil H. and Gayla A. (Walkner) Lien. He grew up in
Lake Mills and attended the Lake Mills Community School,
graduating in 1967. He was baptized and confirmed at the Salem Lutheran
Church in Lake Mills. Dennis served in the United States Army two
years, beginning in July of 1969, with one of those years being
in Vietnam as a military policeman. He was a member of the
Otto/Chose American Legion Post #235.
Denny married Mardene Sue Anonson on August 25, 1973, at
the Bethany
Lutheran Church in Joice. They spent most of their life together
residing in Joice. They had three daughters, Sara Elizabeth, Carrie
Sue and Melissa Ann.
Denny graduated from ALAVTI, a votech college in Albert Lea in 1976,
majoring in Air Conditioning and Refrigeration. He worked for Streater, Inc. for nearly 20 years
and was employed there when he passed
away. He was on the Joice Fire Department for 24 years, where he
served as secretary for several of those years.
Denny is survived by his wife, Mardene of Joice; daughters,
Sara and her husband, Steve Hagen of Lake Mills, Carrie of Joice and Melissa and Ryan Joynt of Lake
Mills; four grandchildren; one step-grandchild; mother, Galya
Lien; one brother, Milo and his wife, Louise Lien; two sisters, Linda
and her husband, Bob Lair and Mary and her husband, Rick Flo;
father-in-law, Spencer and his wife, Senoma Anonson; a
brother-in-law, Barry and his wife, Terry Anonson; four nieces and
seven nephews; and many uncles, aunts and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his father, Orvil Lien; one brother,
Rick Lien; his mother-in-law, Marian Anonson; and one niece, Jamie
Lien.

Laura
Nefzger Goldsmith, 82, of Manchester and formerly of Earlville, died
on
Thursday, December 27, 2001, at the Good Neighbor Home after a lengthy illness.
Funeral services were held on Monday, at the St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Earlville,
with the Rev. Herb Tegeler presiding. Burial was in the church
cemetery.
Laura, the daughter of Valentine and Celia Thole Nefzger, was born
on
January 4, 1919 at Petersburg. She married George Goldsmith on January 17,
1940. He died on November 25, 2001.
She was a member of the St. Joseph's Guild and served as St. Joseph's
Organist and Choir Director for over 20 years. Besides her music,
she enjoyed quilting and spending time with her family.
Surviving are nine children, Carol Meyer (Bud) Kragenbrink of
Northwood, M. Jean (David) Fox of Webster City, Dennis (Kelli)
Goldsmith of Port Washington, Wisconsin, Larry (Regina) Goldsmith of
Earlville, Pat (David) Vorwald of Freeport, Illinois, Kenneth (Mary)
Goldsmith of Cedar Rapids, Doris (John) Nielson of New Berlin, Wisconsin,
Connie Goldsmith of Carlsbad, New Mexico and Paul (Leslie) Goldsmith of
Creston, Iowa; 23 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; one sister,
Marie Rausch of Dubuque; and one sister-in-law, Bernadine Nefzger of
Earlville.
She was preceded in death by two brothers, Elmer and Edward Nefzger;
one sister, Bertha Goldsmith; and two grandchildren, Joseph Meyer and
Patrick Goldsmith.

Lyle C.
Lindquist
January 8, 2002
Lyle C. Lindquist, formerly of Kensett, died on
Friday, December 28, 2001, in California.
He lived in Kensett from 1930-1934. He was born on March 26, 1918, of
parents Marshall and Martha Lindquist. He graduated from the Kensett
High School in 1933 and lived in Stockton, California since 1939 and was a
tax auditor for the state of California for 35 years.
His wife and daughter, Martha and Carole were killed in an auto
accident in 1987.
Survivors include a daughter, Claudia Rotert of Stockton, California; and son,
Martin Lindquist of Oregon.

Blanche M. Munson, 91, of Northwood, died on Sunday, December 30, 2001, at
the Lutheran Retirement Home, Northwood.
Funeral services were held on Wednesday, January 2,
2002, at the First Lutheran Church, Northwood,
with Rev. Allan Stoa officiating. Interment was in the Sunset Rest
Cemetery, Northwood. The
Conner Colonial Chapel, Northwood, was in charge of the arrangements.
Blanche was born on January 2, 1910 in Hayward, Minnesota, the daughter of Andrew
and Alma (Gulbranson) Anderson. She attended school in Hayward and
graduated from the Albert Lea High School in 1928. Blanche married
Herman Munson on December 1, 1935 in Albert Lea, Minnesota. They moved to
Northwood in 1954. She is well known for her seamstress work and she
helped her husband in his business. She was a member of the First
Lutheran Church in Northwood.
Blanche is survived by three children, Barbara Nieman
of Clear Lake,
Iowa, Paul Munson and his wife, Louise of Rosemont, Minnesota and Maevis
Holt of Sulphur Springs, Texas; three step-children, Wallace Munson and his
wife, Florence of Owatonna, Minnesota, Mildred Jensen of La Crosse, Wisconsin and LaVada Johnson
of Osage; six grandchildren; one great-grandchild.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; seven
brothers and sisters; and one step-daughter, Charlotte Otteson.
