Gordon Calvin Mennen

MASON CITY — Gordon Calvin Mennen, 81, of 42 25th St. S.W,. died Tuesday (Jan. 23, 2007) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit.

A funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, 302 Fifth St. S.E., with the Rev. Kenneth Gehling officiating. Interment will be in Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. today at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., with a rosary service to be held at 6:45 p.m. followed by a Scriptural wake service at 7 p.m. There will be further visitation one hour prior to services Saturday in the chapel at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church.

Memorials may be given to the Gordon Mennen Memorial Fund.

Gordon was born Feb. 6, 1925, in Aplington, Iowa, the son of Ecko and Florence (Deters) Mennen. He served in the United States during World War II. Gordon married Patricia Cornelius on May 28, 1949, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church.

He worked for Davey & Moen Construction Company for 42 years, retiring in 1987 as a construction superintendent. Gordon was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus, VFW and the local carpenters union.

He enjoyed traveling, gardening, woodworking, golfing, bowling and sporting events. Gordon gave generously of his time and talent to help his family, friends and community.

Gordon is survived by his children, Gary (Nancy) Mennen, of Mason City, Monica (David) Barnes, of Plymouth, Loretta (James) Ellsworth, of Lakeville, Minn., Terry (Valerie) Mennen, of Hoover, Ala., Gordon J. (Vickie) Mennen, of Mason City, Douglas (Kendra) Mennen, of Mason City and James (Kris) Mennen, of Iowa City; grandchildren, John (Christy) Mennen, Amy (Tony) O’Connell, David Barnes (Kristina Harnish), Matthew (Kassie) Barnes, Christopher (Brea) Ellsworth, Brian (Kasia) Ellsworth, Andrew and Erin Ellsworth, Justin and Brent Mennen, Mike and Robby Mennen, Nick, Ben, Elizabeth and Heather Mennen, Zach, Luke and Brooke Mennen; great-grandchildren, Haley Mennen, Mya and Leah O’Connell, LeAnne and Ava Barnes; brothers and sisters, Ecko (Helen) Mennen Jr., of Waterloo, Gertrude Neymeyer, of Waterloo, Elva Dreier, of Waterloo, Richard (Dixie) Mennen, of Mason City, Eunice Kuhn, of Charles City, Cecil (Evelyn) Mennen, of Columbus Junction, Delores (Robert) Herington, of Cedar Rapids, Imogene (Rocky) Moyle, of Springfield, Mo., and Rosalind (Terry) Andreassen, of Waterloo; and many nieces and nephews.

Alfred Jeddie Stinehart

MASON CITY — Alfred Jeddie Stinehart, 88, of 693 Third Place S.E., Mason City, died Wednesday (Jan. 24, 2007) at the Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 27, 2007, at the Trinity Lutheran Church, 213 N. Pennsylvania Ave., Mason City, with the Rev. Jim Magelssen officiating. Burial will be in the Memorial Park Cemetery, Hwy 122 West, Mason City.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. today at the Hogan-Bremer-Moore Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E., Mason City. Further visitation will be held one hour prior to services on Saturday at the church.

Alfred Jeddie Stinehart was born on Aug. 25, 1918, in Milford, Iowa, the son of Jeddie and Margaret (Lambertus) Stinehart. He received his elementary education in the Milford Community School. The family moved to Mason City in 1927, and Alfred continued his education graduating from Mason City High School. After completing his schooling, he began working for Farrer Upholstery in Mason City.

He was united in marriage to Opal S. Martinson on Oct. 13, 1940, in the Salem Lutheran Church in Lake Mills. She preceded him in death on Sept. 28, 2002.

In 1940, Alfred began his career as a machinist, working for Leo Berry at Berry Machine Company in Mason City, and in the mid 1960s he purchased Berry Machine Company, and remained active in the business until the mid 1980s.

Alfred was an expert machinist and woodworker, and also enjoyed fishing in Minnesota and Canada for several years.

He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Mason City, and also belonged to the Elks Lodge in Mason City for several years.

Left to cherish his memory are his son, Dennis Stinehart and his wife, Jennifer, of Mason City; two grandchildren, Holly Lichty and her husband, Stuart, of Waterloo, and Heather Albuquerque and her husband, Ed, of Coconut Creek, Fla.; a great-grandson, Brandon Albuquerque of Coconut Creek, Fla.; two sisters, June Stinehart, of Mason City, and Betty Schulte of West Des Moines; sisters-in-law, Lavina Larson, of Alexandria, Minn., and Shirley Martinson, of Osage; brother-in-law, Gene Morische and his wife, Millie, of Nora Springs; and a special friend, Edith Whitney, of Mason City; several nieces and nephews, as well as other relatives and friends.

His parents; wife, Opal; infant son, Donald Stinehart; a brother, Orville Stinehart; and three sisters, Helen Barnhill, Ethel Luker and Lea Morische, preceded him in death.

ORCHARD — Norma Birkholz, 90, of Orchard, died Wednesday (Jan. 24, 2007) at the 9th Street Chautauqua Guest Home in Charles City.

A funeral Mass will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday at Saint Peter’s Church in New Haven. The Rev. Ray Atwood will celebrate the Mass. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery at Charles City.

CLARION — Pearl Simpson, 83, of Clarion, died Thursday (Jan. 25, 2007) at Wright Medical Center in Clarion.

Catherine ‘Kate’ A. Davis

CLEAR LAKE — Catherine “Kate” A. Davis, 90, of Clear Lake, died Wednesday (Jan. 24, 2007) at the Muse-Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 27, at Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St., Clear Lake, with Lay Assistant Richard Scott officiating. Interment will be held at the Clear Lake Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. today at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel.

Kate was born Nov. 18, 1916, in Clear Lake, the daughter of Orren and Dorcas Rose (Pester) Porter. She graduated from Clear Lake High School. She lived in Clear Lake her entire life.

Kate married Charles “Chuck” Davis on March 3, 1935, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. They were married for more than 69 years. Kate was a great cook. She loved baking, sewing and her cats. Her greatest love was spending time with her children and grandchildren. She was a very thoughtful mother and grandmother to all. She enjoyed playing Scrabble, cards and especially 500 at the Clear Lake Senior Citizens Center and at home. She was a member of Zion Lutheran Church.

Kate is survived by four children: Sandra Cesar, of Clear Lake, Jill Deuel and her husband, Rick, of San Antonio, Texas, Joni Anderson, of Kingman, Ariz., and Scott Davis and his wife, Rene, of Forest City; eight grandchildren, Shaun Cesar and his wife, Lori, Tracy Connell, Dwayne Davis, Stacie Peavy and her husband, David, Chad Deuel and his wife, Michelle, Cody Deuel, Christie Anderson and Heidi Spurlock and her husband, Davy; 13 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

Kate was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Charles (July 3, 2004); son, Michael; two infant great-grandsons; and four sisters: Flossie Skellenger, Ella Bruns, Lucille Franklin and Esther Evans.

Virginia A. Stegman

BRITT — Virginia A. Stegman, 73, of Britt, passed away Tuesday (Jan. 23, 2007) at Westview Care Center in Britt.

Virginia, the daughter of Everett and Alberta Winderss Garbett, was born Dec. 5, 1933, in Webster City. She was raised in the Eagle Grove and Humboldt areas, graduating from Humboldt High School. Following high school she attended the University of Iowa. She received her Bachelor of Arts degree in English in 1956. Virginia was united in marriage with Jacob “John” Stegman at Iowa City, while he was a student at the university.

Virginia and her husband, John, owned the Britt News-Tribune from 1966 to 1986. After raising her children, she worked in the Britt High School library. In the ’70s and ’80s she assisted John at the News-Tribune. Virginia also worked at Gunther’s Food for several years before she retired.

Virginia enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren, especially at their school activities. She was a big Hawkeye fan, enjoying both basketball and football.

Virginia is survived by one daughter, Catherine Stegman, of Omaha, Neb.; four sons: James Stegman, of Spencer, Michael Stegman, of Clear Lake, John Stegman, of Wesley, and Thomas Stegman, of West Des Moines; six grandchildren: Christina and Courteney Stegman, of Spencer, Brent and Samanatha Stegman, of Wesley, Madison and Jacob Stegman, of West Des Moines; great-grandson, Kayden Stegman; and sister-in-law, Dr. Mary Ruth Stegman, of Omaha, Nebraska.

She was preceded in death by her parents and husband, John, in 1998.

Helen M. Baker

FOREST CITY — Helen M. Baker, 94, formerly of Hayfield, died Tuesday (Jan. 23, 2007) at the Valley Vue Care Center in Armstrong.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 27, at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Forest City with Pastor Barb Spaulding officiating. Burial will be at Madison Township Cemetery in Forest City.

Helen Marie Baker was born in Sandhills, Neb., on July 14, 1912, the daughter of Oscar and Mary (Bankson) Gorman. She received her education in country schools in Gowrie, Iowa, and Woden, Iowa. She was confirmed in the Lutheran faith at Gowrie.

On March 15, 1933, she was united in marriage to Ben C. Baker at Britt. The couple made their home in Hayfield for many years. Helen worked in the Housekeeping Department at Waldorf College until retiring.

She loved to spend time with her children and grandchildren. Sitting on the lake shore fishing for bullheads with Ben was a perfect way to spend time together. Helen liked doing handwork of all kinds — sewing, crocheting and embroidering. She enjoyed caring for her flower gardens.

In August of 1996, Helen moved from Hayfield to Swea City to be closer to family. A year later, in August of 1997, she made her home at the Valley Vue Care Center in Armstrong.

Helen is survived by two sons and their wives: Dean and Millie Baker, of Algona, and Bob and Gloria Baker, of Swea City. Also surviving are 10 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Ben; sisters, Leone and Lola; and brothers, Oliver and Clarence.

William L. Gerdes

WODEN — Surrounded by his loving family, William L. Gerdes, 79, of Woden, died Wednesday (Jan. 24, 2007) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City.

Funeral services will be held 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 31, at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Woden with the Rev. Bill Peters officiating. Burial will be in Bingham Township Cemetery with military rites by the Woden Veterans Ceremonial Unit.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. Tuesday at the Cataldo Funeral Home in Woden and will continue one hour prior to services at the church.

William Leroy Gerdes, the son of William T. and Bertha (Gerdes) Gerdes, was born April 13, 1927, on a farm east of Woden. He attended the rural schools of Bingham Township and graduated from Woden High School in 1945. Bill served his country in the U.S. Army from July 1945 to January 1947.

On Sept. 10, 1949, he married Velma Mildred Geerdes at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Woden. They made their home in Woden where they raised their five sons. Bill worked in the family construction business, Gerdes Construction, building many homes, business buildings and other landmarks in the Woden area. Bill remained active in the business with his brother, Dennis, for many years. Most recently, he was helping his sons in their construction and woodworking businesses.

He enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren and fishing trips to Canada and Minnesota with family and friends.

He was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church, where he was baptized and confirmed. He had served as mayor of Woden and was a member and past commander of the Woden American Legion.

Bill is survived by his wife, Velma, of Woden; five sons, Gary (Ann) Gerdes of Forest City, Tim (Lori) Gerdes of Lake Mills, Dale (Kristin) Gerdes of Forest City, Steve (special friend, Sharla Krein) of Crystal Lake and Bruce (Christine) Gerdes of Buffalo Center; 12 grandchildren, Jodie (Al) Steen, Matthew Gerdes, Andrew Gerdes, Lucas Gerdes, Jamie Gerdes, Christopher (Crystal) Gerdes, Joshua Gerdes, Caleb Gerdes, Justin (Miho) Gerdes, Heather (Andy) May, Jonathon Gerdes and Zachary Gerdes; three great-grandchildren, Nicole Steen, Dillon Gerdes and Taylor May; two brothers, Paul (Betty) Gerdes of Woden and James (Helen) Gerdes of Osage; and many nieces and nephews.

Charles A. Frelund

OWATONNA, Minn. —Charles A. Frelund, 70, of Owatonna, died Wednesday (Jan. 24, 2007) at his home with his family by his side after a 3-year journey with cancer.

A memorial service is set for 4:30 p.m. Monday, Jan. 29, at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Owatonna with Father Michael Tippet officiating the service.

Friends may greet the family on Sunday, Jan. 28, at Brick-Meger funeral Home (1603 Austin Road in Owatonna) from 5 to 7 p.m. and one hour before the time of services at the church on Monday.

Born Charles Andrew Frelund, son of Andrew and Marie Frelund-Pfeil in Mason City, Iowa, Charles (Charlie) Frelund received his BS degree from the University of Northern Iowa, Cedar Falls, Iowa, and later received his masters degree in fine art in 1969. He began teaching in Cedar Falls Public School as an art teacher and became art department chair from 1959-1967. He taught art at Wartburg College in Waverly, Iowa, and was the chairman of the art department until 1976. He then worked at Manzano Day School in Albuquerque, N.M., until 1993. Charlie and his family moved to Owatonna in 1999, and he taught for several years at OHS and Owatonna Junior High. Painting, drawing, and sculpture were very important facets of his life and he exhibited his work throughout his adult life. He will be remembered as a teacher as well as a practicing artist.

Charlie loved to spend time at the family’s lake home in northern Minnesota, reading, writing poetry and spending time with his family and friends. He will be greatly missed by all whose lives he touched.

Charlie is survived by his wife, Sandy, and their children, Andrew Judd Frelund, Charles Jon Frelund and Jessica Frelund, all of Owatonna, and his son, Tony Frelund, and stepsons, Monte (Kelly) Ballejos and Elfego (Raquel) Ballejos, all of Albuquerque, N.M. Additional survivors include his brother, Warren (Sue) Frelund, of Mason City, and several nieces and their families as well as several cousins.

Charlie is preceded in death by parents, infant daughter, Kathy, and his first wife, Louise Garufis.

Memorials are preferred to St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Owatonna, Hospice or the donor’s choice.

Lillian Marianne “Toodles” Sult was born north of Marble Rock, Union Township, Floyd County, the only daughter of Earl Henry “Ben” and Margaret Elizabeth (Luther) Thieman, and passed away on Thursday, Jan. 25, 2007, at Mercy Medical Center North Iowa, Mason City.

She received her education in the Marble Rock Public Schools, graduating in 1947.

On Nov. 25, 1948, she was united in marriage to Weldon Fox Sult at the United Methodist Church in Marble Rock.

They lived in Des Moines while he attended barber school and she was employed as a candy girl at a movie theater. Following his graduation they returned to Marble Rock where they enjoyed 58 years together.

Toodles’ family was her number one priority. She actively supported her family in their activities and always said that “she and Weldon were the most fortunate people to have such wonderful grandkids.” They will remember her for the many things she has provided, especially her cooking, and the memories of the flavors, smells, and warmth from her kitchen.

She loved entertaining, singing, dancing, and playing cards.

She was actively involved in the life of the Marble Rock community, touching generations of lives. She was a bus driver for the Rudd-Rockford-Marble Rock Community School District for 38 years. She was a charter member of the American Legion Auxiliary Post 387, UMW, Floyd County Memorial Hospital Auxiliary Unit, Charles City Women of the Moose, Monday, Wednesday Bridge Club, various bowling teams, former member of the Mason City Sweet Adelines for over 20 years, and a current member of the Heartland Harmony for the past five years.

Living family members include her loving husband of 58 years, Weldon, of Marble Rock; a daughter, Nancy (Larry) Glubka, of Eugene, Ore.; two sons, Joel (Rosemary) Sult, of Allison, and Jon (Rhonda) Sult, of Marble Rock; seven grandchildren, Kelly Sult, Casey Sult, (Adam) and Kara Halford, Jordan Glubka, Dustin Sult, Dena Sult, and Lilly Ann Glubka.

Extended family members include her sister-in-law, Carol Thieman, of Marble Rock; two nieces, Jennifer Thieman and Penny Thieman; and one nephew, Ryan “Ben” (Kellie) Thieman.

Toodles was preceded in death by her parents and one brother, William Thieman.

John R. Kamm

NASHUA — John R. Kamm, 70, of Nashua, died Friday evening (Jan. 26, 2007) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City.

John Roger Kamm was born on Jan. 26, 1937, at Rudd, Iowa, the son of John J. and Velma M. (Felix) Kamm. He graduated from Rudd High School in 1955.

John served in the U.S. Army with Headquarters Co., 4th TTCC, from Jan. 27, 1956, to Nov, 12, 1957. After leaving the service, he went to Iowa State University where he earned a degree in electrical engineering in 1963.

He lived in Muscatine for a time, then moved back to Rudd from 1968 to 1972. He then moved to Garner in 1972, where he worked for Garner R.E.C. for seven years as a surveyor.

John was united in marriage to Carol F. Hundt on Aug. 9, 1974, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. They moved to Wilton, Iowa, in 1979 and John worked as an engineering tech for Stanley Consultants, Inc. in Muscatine for 20 years, retiring in 1993. In 1994, John and Carol moved to their present home in Nashua.

He enjoyed fishing, camping, gardening, home projects, motorcycling and lecturing his children. John was a loving and caring husband, father and grandfather. He never gave up on life or those closest to him.

He is survived by his wife, Carol; four daughters, Margaret Kamm, of Wapello, Jacqueline (Cliff) Bohling, of Solon, Melanie Paarman, of Wilton, and Julie (David) Schiele, of Enoree, S.C.; 11 grandchildren, Kama Wollenhaupt; April Bohling, Matt Bohling, Danielle Pedersen, Brooke Rohde, and Whitney Bohling; Caleb Paarman and Preston Paarman; Michael Schiele, Megan Schiele and Marcia Schiele; four great-grandsons, Mason Denny, Triston Trujillo, Ty Schiele and Demarco Dudley; two brothers, Robert Kamm, of Pryor, Okla. and Marion “Jack” (Norma) Kamm, of Charles City.

John was preceded in death by his parents, John and Velma; and one brother, Larry Kamm.

Ardis Suzanne Paulson

MASON CITY — Ardis Suzanne Paulson, 74, of 1435 N. Quincy Ave., Mason City, went to meet her God on Thursday (Jan. 25, 2007) at the United Hospital in St. Paul, Minn.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. on Monday, Jan. 29, 2007, at the First Christian Church, 318 N. Adams, with the Pastor Charles Aurand officiating. Interment will be held in Memorial Park Cemetery.

Memorials may be given to the Mason City Public Library, to be used in the large-print book section. This was a great source of enjoyment for her.

Ardis was born in Mason City on Feb. 14, 1932, to Gaylord and Viola Corinne (Murray) Hegland. She was raised by her grandmother, Ella Gardner.

She attended First Christian Church as a child and was baptized on April 9, 1944, and has been a lifelong member. She attended school in Mason City and graduated from Mason City High School in 1950.

She worked at several local stores before returning to North Iowa Area Community College to receive her business diploma. After finishing school at NIACC, on Jan, 1, 1980, she went to work for the Materials Department for the Iowa Department of Transportation. She retired on March 31, 1995. She always said the thing that made the job so great was the people she worked with.

Ardis married Bob L. Paulson on Aug. 11, 1951, at the First Christian Church in Mason City. To this union four children were born: John, Ronald, Wendy and Nancy. Ardis’ family was the most important thing in her life.

She is survived by her husband, Bob L. Paulson, of Mason City; children, John L. Paulson, and wife, Janice, of Forest Lake, Minn., Ronald A. Paulson, of Roseville, Minn., and Nancy L. Paulson, of Clear Lake; three grandchildren, Becky Mann, Stacy Mann and Bill Mann; great-grandchild, Katelyn Star Mann; brothers, Edward G. Lembcke, of Hampton, Va., and Max Hegland, and wife, Gloria, of Mason City; sister, Rosella M. Crandall, and husband, Leonard, of Waterloo.

Alpha Orlette (Teigen) Hanson was born on Dec. 2, 1921, in Winnebago County, Iowa, the daughter of Andrew and Anna Louise (Tweed) Teigen. She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith in Winnebago County. She was educated in the rural Lake Mills schools.

On Nov. 23, 1940, Alpha was married to Kenneth L. Hanson at Charles City, Iowa. She was a farm wife for many years, and was also an employee at Fleetguard for 20 years.

Alpha was active at Salem Lutheran Church, enjoyed gardening, her pets, her beloved grandchildren, and her many friends in the community.

Alpha is survived by one sister, Viola Andrews, of St. Petersburg, Fla.; her children, Larry Hanson, of Minneapolis, Minn., Carolyn Rawlings, and her husband, John, of Lake Mills, Dennis Hanson, and his wife, Kathy, of Lake Mills, and David Hanson, and his wife, Annie, of Lake Mills; seven grandchildren, Scott (Carrie) Hanson, Ross (Paula) Hanson, Amber (Travis) Tubré, Nicole (Larry) Lentz, Eric (Lily) Schroder, Brian Hanson, and Kevin Hanson; five great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

MASON CITY— Florence Graff, age 91, of Mason City, died Friday (Jan. 26, 2007) at Muse Norris Hospice in Mason City.

Florence L. Graff was born in Forest City, Iowa, on Oct. 31, 1915, the daughter of Sam and Mary (Willert) Kitner. She received her education in rural school near her home.

On Feb. 22, 1936, she was united in marriage to Marcus Graff at St. James Catholic Church in Forest City. To this marriage 10 children were born.

They farmed west of Forest City for many years. They later left the farm and moved to an acreage near Joice. After Marcus’ death in 1980, Florence made her home in Mason City, where she worked part time for the Salvation Army and the Senior Citizens Center.

She enjoyed caring for her flower gardens, feeding the birds and garage sales. But her greatest enjoyment came when she was visited by her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was a member of St. James Catholic Church.

Florence is survived by her children: Dennis (Linda) Graff of Mason City; Rodney (Tammy) Graff of Joice; Geraldine Mikelson of Garner; Dolly Skarpness of Mason City; Carol Mathahs of Thompson; Rosemary Green of Austin, Texas; Mrs. Sandra VanDenHul of Mason City; and Sharon Sandell of Mason City. Also surviving are 38 grandchildren, 74 great-grandchildren, 11 great-great-grandchildren, and a sister, June Weaver, of Thompson.

NAVARRE, Fla. — Larry Gordon McDougle, 65, of Navarre, Fla., passed away Monday morning (Jan. 22, 2007) at his residence.

After his retirement in June 1980, Larry worked on base as a security guard contractor.

In his spare time, he enjoyed singing and playing the guitar, building model aircraft and spending time with his six grandchildren.

CLEAR LAKE — Leon Donald Eymann, 82, of Clear Lake, died Saturday (Jan. 27, 2007) at the Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City.

 

Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, January 31, 2007, at the Zion Lutheran Church, 112 North Fourth Street, Clear Lake, with the Rev. Dean Hess officiating.

 

Family will receive friends one hour prior to church services on Wednesday at the church. Following the services, there will be military honors at the church by members of the Veterans of Foreign Wars of Clear Lake.

 

The family of Leon Donald Eymann has requested that memorial contributions be made to the Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa West Campus Dialysis Center in his memory.

 

According to his wishes, his body was cremated.

Leon Donald Eymann, was born on August 2, 1924, in Forest City, Iowa, the son of L.K. and Vesta (Lewis) Eymann. Don attended school in Forest City and graduated from Forest City High School. He enlisted into the Army Air Corps during World War II and served overseas in the European Theater and was a co-pilot on a B-17 bomber. He was honorably discharged as a second lieutenant.

 

After his honorable discharge, Don attended the University of Iowa in Iowa City. Don returned to Forest City, to join his brother John in the family business (Eymann’s) selling cars and John Deere equipment. He moved to Clear Lake in 1986, working as a Realtor for Northern Realty in Clear Lake.

 

He was united in marriage to Shirley on Aug. 15, 1950, in Mason City, Iowa.

 

He enjoyed mowing his yard, traveling, fishing, playing cards, hunting, and golfing, but his great love and enjoyment was his family and friends.

 

He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Clear Lake, and the Clear Lake Veterans of Foreign Wars. 

 

Left to cherish his memory is his wife, Shirley Eymann of Clear Lake; three children: Suzanne Wright of Oregon City, Ore., Joni Fields and her husband, Dan, of Shorewood, Minn., and Jan Eymann-McConville and her husband, Tim, of Verona, Wis.; five grandchildren: Jenny, Stephanie, Leanna, Tyler, and Kolby. Don is also survived by his sister, Marilyn Hanna and her husband, Tom, of Kensett, as well as other relatives and friends.

 

He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Lewis and John, and two sisters, Pat and Norma.

A celebration of life service will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 31, 2007, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Riverside with Father Rich Adam officiating.

Jacque was born on Dec. 25, 1961 to Marinus and Margaret (Mitchell) Mihm in New Hampton, Iowa. She graduated from Turkey Valley High School in 1980 and went on to receive a bachelor of arts degree in marketing from the University of Northern Iowa, Cedar Falls in 1984.

 

Jacque was sales manager for JM Swank Co., in North Liberty for 20 years.

 

She was a member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Gamma Phi Beta Sorority, and served as a C.C.D teacher at Holy Trinity.

 

She was married to Jim Cayton on Aug. 24, 1985, at St. Lucas, Iowa.

 

She is survived by her husband, Jim Cayton; three daughters, all at home: Erin, Courtney and Emily Cayton; her father, Marinus Mihm of West Union; brother, Gary and wife, Janice Mihm, of Fort Atkinson, Iowa, brother, Billy Mihm and his fiancé, Sandy Hageman, of Fort Atkinson, Iowa; her sister, Deb, and her husband, Steve Pesek, of New Hampton, sister, Tammy, and her husband, Al Thornton, of Decorah, her twin sister, Jolene, and her husband, Bill Galligan, of Waverly.

HAMPTON — Mildred Irene (Junker) Price, 80, of Hampton, died Saturday (Jan. 27, 2007) at the Sheffield Care Center in Sheffield.

 

Funeral services for Mildred Price will be 11 a.m. Thursday at the Hampton United Methodist Church in Hampton with the Rev. Jerry Miller and the Rev. Randy Crane presiding. Burial will be in the Eldora Cemetery, Eldora.

Howard G. Lehn

 

MASON CITY — Howard G. “Howie” Lehn, 88, of 730 N. Carolina Ave. in Mason City, died Friday afternoon (Jan. 26, 2007) at the Muse-Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

 

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 30, 2007, in the church chapel of the First United Methodist Church, 119 S. Georgia Ave. in Mason City with the Rev. Jim Stiles presiding. Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery with military respects provided by the Mason City Memorial Association.

 

The family will greet relatives and friends in the chapel of the First United Methodist Church in Mason City on Tuesday from 11 a.m. until the time of Howard’s service at 1 p.m.

Howard Glen Lehn was born on June 20, 1918, in Elba, Neb., the son of William and Edna (Parker) Lehn. He attended and graduated from Elba High School in the class of 1936.

 

Howard was inducted into the United States Army Air Corps and served his country during World War II as a fighter pilot trainer. After honorably and faithfully serving his designated time, Howard was discharged of his duties from Fort Sheridan, Illinois.

 

Howie, as he was fondly known by his family and friends, moved to Mason City and met the love of his life and future wife, Eleanor Grace Currier. The couple was united in marriage on Aug. 15, 1953, in Kansas City, Mo. They treasured time spent together while traveling, vegetable and flower gardening, golfing and preparing for and hosting family gatherings, especially during the holidays.

 

Howie took great pride in providing for his family. He retired in 1980 from the Western Electric Telephone Company, where he was employed for many years as a manager and installer.

 

Some of Howie’s favorite hobbies and leisure activities included large and small woodworking and remodeling projects, refinishing furniture, bird and squirrel watching, and collecting antiques. He is described by his daughters as a loving, gentle and kind man who was a true role model to not only them but to his grandchildren, as well. He was always willing to assist his family, friends and neighbors. Howie loved spending time outdoors, close to nature and for his own enjoyment, flying as a private pilot.

 

Howie was a member of the First United Methodist Church and the American Legion in Mason City.

 

Howie will be dearly missed by his family and friends who have shared in his life.

 

He is survived by his two daughters, Jeanette (Moore) Dempsey of Bellevue, Neb., and Phyllis (Moore) Waters of Osage Beach, Mo.; his sister, Irene Hayes of Newport News, Va.; his seven grandchildren: Brad (Mary) Dempsey, Cindy (Ed) McManus, Brian Dempsey, Christine Dempsey, Joe Waters, Jason Waters and Jeff (Anissa) Waters. He will also be a cherished memory to his ten great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren and many other relatives and friends.

 

Preceding Howie in death are his wife, Eleanor Lehn in January of 2002; his parents, William and Edna Lehn; his brothers, Earl and Carl Lehn and his son-in-law, Joseph Waters.
