Annabel
Branstad
was born
on May
24,
1921,
near
Thompson,
the
daughter
of Boal
and
Helen
(Hove)
Anderson.
On June
2, 1939,
she was
united
marriage
to John
E.
Branstad
in the
Winnebago
Lutheran
parsonage.
Together
they
farmed
in the
area for
many
years
before
moving
into
Lake
Mills
where
she was
employed
at
Fleetguard,
now
known as
Cummins
Filtration,
where
she
worked
for 27
years
until
she
retired
in 1986.
John
passed
away on
Nov. 19,
1999.

is
survived
by her
three
daughters:

the
daughter
of Neal
and
Mirinda
Michelsen
VanDusseldorp,
was born
on Sept.
20,
1915, on
a farm
south of
Kanawha.
She
attended
area
rural
schools.
On Jan.
1, 1939,
she was
united
in
marriage
with
Carl
Swyter
at her
parents’
home
near
Kanawha.
The
couple
farmed
on
Carl’s
home
place
near
Britt in
Erin
Township,
until
retiring
and
moving
into
Britt in
1978.
Ruth was
a member
of the
United
Methodist
Church
of
Britt.
She was
a member
of the
church
circle
and
served
on
various
church
committees.
She was
a
long-standing
member
of the
Rebekah
Lodge.
Ruth
enjoyed
quilting
and
doing
embroidery
work,
and made
quilts
and many
embroidery
items
for all
of her
children,
grandchildren
and
great-grandchildren.
She also
enjoyed
her
flower
gardening,
reading
and
keeping
up with
current
events.
She also
enjoyed
keeping
in
contact
with her
many
relatives.
After
raising
her
family,
Ruth
obtained
her GED.
She then
attended
North
Iowa
Area
Community
College
and Iowa
Lakes
Community
College
where
she
received
her LPN
nursing
degree
in March
of 1974.
In 1976,
she
received
her EMT
certification
and was
a
charter
member
of the
West
Hancock
Volunteer
Ambulance
Service.
She also
worked
as a
nurse’s
aide at
the West
View
Care
Center.
Ruth is
survived
by three
sons,
Ross
(Sandy)
Swyter
of
Britt,
granddaughters,
Emily
and
Hannah;
Roger
(Beth)
Swyter,
of
Nashua,
grandchildren,
Michael
(Tana)
Swyter,
and Pam
Swyter;
and
Robert
(Peggy)
Swyter,
of
Hoffman
Estates,
Ill.,
grandsons,

She is

survived
by six
great-grandchildren.

She

She went

clothing
stores,

in Mason
City,
and
Stark’s
Clothing
in
Clarion.
Adele
was
united
in
marriage
with
Ernest
Johnson
on July
16,
1950.
They
lived in
town
briefly
before
moving
to the
family
farm.
Adele
had a
natural
talent
as an
artist;
she
loved to
paint.
She was
also an
avid
bird
watcher.
Taking
care of
her
family
was her
life.
Adele
was very
active
in the
community,
and her
church
as well.
She was
a
charter
member
of her
sorority,
Beta
Sigma
Phi,
being a
member
for 59
years.
She was
also a
member
of the
Eastern
Star,
the
Kensington
Club,
and the
Ladies
Aid at
St. Olaf
Church.
Adele is
survived
by her
sons,
George
(Barbara)
Johnson
and Phil
(Laurie)
Johnson,
both of
Belmond;
grandchildren,

Patrick’s
Catholic

Waukon.
To this
marriage
six
children
were
born.
Adeline
worked
in the
food
service
industry
for many
years.
Adeline
retired
from
Luther
College
in 1992,
at the
age of
75, with
over 30
years of
service.
Adeline
loved to
cook,
enjoyed
playing
bingo,
dancing
and
going to
the
“Boat.”
Adeline
also
loved
her
polka
music
and
scratch
tickets.
Adeline
was
always
known to
speak
her mind
— no
matter
what!
Adeline
worked
her
whole
life to
make
sure her
family
had what
they
needed
with no
regard
for her
own
material
needs.
Adeline’s
life
evolved
around
her
family.
A
special
gleam
could be
seen
when her
grandchildren
and
great-grandchildren
were
present.
She was
a member
of St.
Benedict’s
Catholic
Church.
Everyone
should
be so
blessed
to know
an
“Adeline”
in their
lifetime.

Ruth Mergertie Swyter
BRITT — Ruth Mergertie Swyter, 91, passed away Monday (Jan. 8, 2007) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City.

A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 18, at the Britt Christian Reformed Church in Britt with Pastor Joel DeBoer officiating.
Ruth, the daughter of Neal and Mirinda Michelsen VanDusseldorp, was born on Sept. 20, 1915, on a farm south of Kanawha. She attended area rural schools.
On Jan. 1, 1939, she was united in marriage with Carl Swyter at her parents’ home near Kanawha. The couple farmed on Carl’s home place near Britt in Erin Township, until retiring and moving into Britt in 1978.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 18, at the Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., with the Rev. Keith Scott of Wesley United Methodist Church officiating. Interment will be at Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery.

Arlyce was born on Feb. 13, 1938, in Sisseton, S.D., to Arthur and Ruby (Harrison) Welch. She attended school in Mason City.
On Dec. 10, 1953, she was united in marriage to Julian M. Faille in Kankakee, Ill. She enjoyed traveling, gardening, crocheting, sewing, baking and cooking.
Arlyce is survived by five children, Steven Faille and wife, Christeen, of Cedar Rapids, Sandra Fett of De Soto, Duane Faille of Mason City, Linda Johnson and husband, Terry, of Snow Mass Village, Colo., and Julie Meier of Mason City; nine grandchildren, Eric, Danielle, Kyle, Brandi, Dionne, Buddy, John, Lindsey and Alex; five great-grandchildren, Sean, Joey, Jayden, Savannah and Brody; one brother, Eugene Welch, of Dallas, Texas; one sister, Lois Holmes and husband, Charles, of Mason City; and one half-brother, Charles Jackson Jr. and wife, Barbra, of Rockwell. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; and her husband Julian in 1982.

Albert ‘Al’ Tolzman
MULLAN, Idaho — Albert “Al” Tolzman, 66, formerly of Mason City, died Friday (Jan. 5, 2007) at his home in Mullan, Idaho.
A celebration of life was held on Jan. 10, in Mullan, Idaho. A private family burial will be held at a later date in Nora Springs, Iowa.
Al was born in San Francisco, Calif., on July 3, 1940. He attended school in Mason City and served in the United States Army as an MP.
His home was in the mountains in Idaho, where he loved to hunt bear, elk and deer.
He is survived by his wife, Brenda, of Mullan, Idaho; and two children, son, John Tolzman, of Nora Springs; and a daughter, Tawny (Price) McElroy, of Glendale, Ariz.; two grandsons, Stone and Blade Tolzman of Mason City; his parents, LaVern and Lillian Tolzman of Havana, Ark.; sisters, Diane (Robert) Neuhring of Mason City and Susan (Tom) Berry of Havana, Ark.; nieces, Lori (Doug) Schmidt, children, Brandon, Jeremy, Steven and Austin, of Nora Springs, Jill (Eugene) Tittsworth, children, Spencer and Brooke, of Van Buren, Ark., Allison (Danny) Hollis of Fort Smith, Ark., Christie (Jeremy) Rahn, children, Zackary, Ashton, and Page, of Merced, Calif.; Stacey Bosnick and children, Bryeanna, Connor and Ryan, of Danville, Ark.; nephews, Brad (Lissan) Neuhring of Mason City and Brett Tolzman of Fort Smith, Ark.

John Franklin Hitzhusen was born in Cartersville, Iowa, to Ben and Clara (Gaiser) Hitzhusen. He attended and graduated from Rockwell, Mason City Junior College and later the University of Iowa School of Dentistry in 1940. Dr. Hitzhusen practiced dentistry in Charles City for 56 years, retiring in 1996. He served as a captain in the Army Dental Corps in Iceland. Dr. Hitzhusen had traveled on dental mission trips that had taken him to Mexico and Sierra Leone, West Africa. John’s philosophy in life was “Find a job you love and you will never work another day of your life.”
On June 13, 1942, John was united in marriage to Donna Chuick in Princeton, Mo.
John was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church. In addition, his memberships and service included being a charter member of the noon Kiwanis in Charles City, serving on the NIACC Board for 23 years from (1970-1993), the NIACC Foundation from 2001 to 2005, the Floyd County Museum and the Floyd County Fair and livestock auction for many years. John was also a member of both the V.F.W. and American Legion of Charles City.
John’s interests and activities included golf and fishing in his younger years, completing home improvement projects for his children, baking and giving away bread and early mornings spent at the YMCA in Charles City.
Dr. John is survived by his wife, Donna; his children, Linda (Doug) Groesbeck of Charles City and Bill (Vicki) Hitzhusen of Houston, Texas; four grandchildren, Emily (Jeff) Griswold, Dan Groesbeck, Kate Hitzhusen and Lauren Hitzhusen; and one great-grandson, Ethyn Groesbeck.
John was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Ruth Hult and Ann Smith; and four brothers, Henry, George, Leon and Ernest Hitzhusen.

MASON CITY — Jack L. Leake, 70, of 302 Second St. N.E. in Mason City, died Sunday (Jan. 14 2007) at the Muse Norris Hospice In-patient Unit in Mason City.

Jack Lee Leake was born July 19, 1936, at Mason City, a son of James S. and Helen J. (Meader) Leake. He married Margery Wilson on June 25, 1961.
Jack was a 1956 graduate of Mason City High School where he participated in football and wrestling. A 1957 graduate of Army signal school, Jack served in the United States Army from 1956-59 in Korea, where he worked as a photographic lab technician. Following his discharge from the Army, Jack attended the Brooks Institute of Photography at Santa Barbara, Calif., completing its course of study in 1961.
Jack worked for White Farm Equipment in Charles City for more than 25 years. Later, he worked at Lewis Systems prior to retirement.
He was a member of the First Christian Church in Mason City.
Survivors include his children, Lori (Eric) Botts of Macomb, Ill., Kathy (Ed) Mahlstedt of Bagley, David (Rebecca) Leake of Nora Springs, Amy Vosburgh of Nora Springs; grandchildren, Meghan, Hayley and Carly Botts, Bryant, Kayla, Andy and Thomas Mahlstedt, Amanda, Marissa and Kara Leake, Chelsea and Hunter Vosburgh; a brother, Harlan (Maureen) Leake, of Mason City; an aunt, Mildred (Charles) McElroy, of Rockford; an uncle, Don Leake, of Mason City; one niece and two nephews.
His parents, a son, Mark Lee Leake; and a granddaughter, BriAnna Noel Leake, preceded him in death.

KLEMME — Nadina Kay Sizemore, 37, of Klemme, passed away Tuesday (Jan. 16, 2007) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City.

Nadina Kay, the daughter of Randy and Debbie Moore Sizemore, was born Dec. 18, 1969, in Louisville, Ky. She grew up in Henry County, Kentucky, where she attended school. Nadina graduated from the Henry County High School in 1987. After high school, she started working for the State of Kentucky. It was during this time that she met her life’s companion, Nathan Banta.
In 1997, Nathan and Dina moved to Klemme. Nadina had been working for the Belmond-Klemme High School as a teacher’s aid for the past four years. Devoted to her family, Nadina’s children were her life. She loved spending time with family and friends.
Nadina is survived by Nathan; three daughters, Kelsey, Baylee and Morgan, all at home; her parents, Randy and Debbie Sizemore, of Gratz, Ky.; three brothers, Randy of Gratz, Ky., Scott of Gratz, Ky., and Turner of Louisville, Ky.; father-in-law, Lou Banta and wife, Fran, of Belmond; mother-in-law, Sandy Vestweber and husband, Dennis, of Leland; grandfather-in-law, John Just, of Belmond; grandmother-in-law, Wilhelmine Vestweber, of Belmond; sister-in-law, Rachel Boots and husband, David, of Rowan; brothers-in-law, Tom Banta and wife, Teya, of Garner and Josh Banta and wife, Tasha, of West Des Moines; also surviving Nadina are Traci and Dan Goll, of Garner, Troy and Brook Rasmuson of Belmond, Tom and Dawn Butler of Belmond, Danny Butler of Austin, Texas; as well numerous other relatives and friends.

Bette passed away in her sleep Monday (Jan. 15, 2007) at Thorne Crest Retirement Center, where she had made her home for the last 18 years.
Bette Delores Lovik was born Jan. 7, 1921, to Anna (Herzog) and Edward Ziesmer in Ventura. She graduated from Garner High School. After high school, Bette moved to Lake Mills and worked for a short time at The Graphic Publishing Co. It was in Lake Mills she met and married Dr. Stanley Lovik, DVM. Doc and Bette had four children — Stephen (deceased) and Linda (Bass), Nate, Jackie and Josh Lovik of Iowa City; Shirlee Lovik Kittleman (deceased) and Thomas, Brad and Sara Kittleman of Florida; Tom and Mary (Morris), Julianna and William Lovik of Okemos, Mich.; Rick and Kelly (Shaffer), Ben and Lindsey Lovik of Prior Lake, Minn. Bette is also survived by her sister-in-law, Darlene Ziesmer; a niece, Betty Ann Goll-Muth; and nieces and nephews in Garner.
Doc and Betty lived for many years in Lake Mills, where they formed strong bonds with many folks and always had a pot of coffee and some bars ready for unexpected company.
Bette was a longtime volunteer for the American Cancer Society and enjoyed playing golf and bridge and in later years frequent games of “Uno” and “Kings in the Corner” with her friends. She was also active in the Literary Club and her Circle at Salem Lutheran Church.
Bette’s keen sense of humor, her love for her children and her grandchildren and her strong spirit in spite of her long battle with multiple sclerosis will be cherished and remembered by her family and her friends in Lake Mills, Garner, and at Thorne Crest.

Berdie M. Erickson
ADA, Minn — Berdie Erickson, 90, of Ada, Minn., died Tuesday (Jan. 16, 2007) at Bridges Care Community, Ada, Minn.
On April 16, 1916, Berdie Mae was born to Orin and Stena (Strand) Galland in Mentor, Minn. She was the sixth of seven children. Berdie was baptized and later confirmed in the Lutheran Church.
Berdie graduated from Mentor High School and attended Lutheran Bible Institute in the Twin Cities. It was there that she met E. Raymond Erickson from Clear Lake, Iowa. Ray and Berdie married on Sept. 28, 1940, in Berdie’s hometown of Mentor at Faith Lutheran Church. They made their home on a farm near Joice, Iowa. They raised corn, beans, cattle, chickens, pigs, and four rambunctious sons (Philip, Paul, Marcus and Clement).
In March 1959, Ray and Berdie and their sons moved to a farm near Ada, Minn. In 1976, they moved to Twin Valley, Minn., and in 1981 they moved to Ada, Minn. In the winter months, Ray and Berdie spent time in Arizona, when they retired.
Berdie enjoyed gardening, visiting with friends and family over coffee, Bible studies and traveling. Some of her trips included traveling to Norway, Israel and Egypt.
Berdie is survived by three sons, Paul (Bertha) Erickson, Clear Lake, Iowa, Marcus (Marilyn) Erickson, Erskine, Minn., and Clement (Gail) Erickson, Twin Valley, Minn.; daughter-in-law, Sharon Erickson, Ada, Minn.; 10 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren; one brother: Wilson (Clara) Galland, Mentor, Minn.; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Ray; two sons, Samuel and Phillip; one granddaughter, Melissa; one great-grandson, Christopher; two brothers, Chester and Raymond; three sisters, Clara Bouffleur, Viola Grimstad, and Nellie Bergh.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 20, at Grace Lutheran Church, Ada, Minn.

Marcella Halbach
STACYVILLE — Marcella Halbach, 86, of Stacyville, died Wednesday (Jan. 17, 2007) at the Mitchell County Regional Health Center in Osage.
Marcella was born May 2, 1920, at Meyer, Iowa, the daughter of William and Mary (Werner) Gerhartz. She married Fred “Fritz” Halbach on Nov. 26, 1942, at Meyer. They farmed east of Stacyville until retiring and moving to Stacyville in 1980.
Marcella was a 4-H leader for more than 25 years and was very active with the Mitchell County Fair Association. She was a member of the Thread Clippers Quilting Club. Marcella was an active member of Visitation Catholic Church and the Christian Mothers in Stacyville.
Marcella enjoyed a variety of activities, which included gardening, bowling, golfing, traveling, reading and especially quilting.
Mass of Christian burial will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 20, at Visitation Catholic Church in Stacyville. Burial will be in the Visitation Catholic Cemetery.

Robert J. Fink
OSAGE — Memorial services for Robert J. Fink were held Thursday, Dec. 29, 2006, at the First Baptist Church in Osage with Pastor Doug Brown officiating.
Robert died Thursday, Dec. 21, 2006, at his home in Brainerd, Minn.
Robert was born June 7, 1943, in Osage, the son of Dale and Mildred (Flynn) Fink. He attended Orchard and Nora Springs schools, graduating from Nora Springs in 1961. He was united in marriage to Noreen Newton in 1962 at the First Baptist Church in Osage. They made their home in Osage and Brainerd.
Robert worked at White Farm Equipment (previously Oliver) in Charles City for more than 20 years. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Osage.
Robert loved the lakes and woods and enjoyed wildlife and fishing. His passion was his 1967 Corvette and he enjoyed taking it to car shows.
He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Jim.
Robert is survived by Noreen Fink of Osage; two sons, Steven Fink of Valley Center, Kan., and his daughters, Alyssa and Kylee, and son, Caleb; and David (Shirley) Fink of Cleveland Tenn., and their four sons, Matthew, Aaron, Andrew and Mason; and a stepgranddaughter, Heather Francel of San Diego, Calif.

WHITTEMORE — June Elbert, 87, of Whittemore, died Wednesday (Jan. 17, 2007) at the Good Samaritan Communities in Algona.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Whittemore with the Rev. Father Victor Ramaeker officiating. Burial will be in St. Michael’s Catholic Cemetery.
Visitation will be held from 9:30 a.m. until time of services at St. Michael’s Parish Center in Whittemore.
