OSAGE - Marlene Andrea Frein, 64, of Osage, died Friday (Jan. 20, 2006) at the Mitchell County Regional Health Center Hospice Unit in Osage following a courageous battle with cancer.
A Memorial Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Osage with the Rev. John Moser officiating. Inurnment will be at Sacred Heart Cemetery.
There will be a gathering of family and friends from 4 to 6:30 p.m. today at the Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home in Osage, where there will be a Scripture service at 6:30 p.m.
She was born May 4, 1941, in Osage, the daughter of Erling O. and M. Janette (Forslund) Dahley. Marlene grew up on a farm southwest of Osage, was baptized and confirmed at Rock Creek Lutheran Church, and was later confirmed in the Catholic faith.
Marlene attended elementary school in Rudd, junior high school in Osage, graduated from Osage High School in 1959 and was a graduate of Minneapolis Business College. Marlene married Bob Frein on May 21, 1960, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Osage.
She was employed by Virgil Johnston Real Estate, Croell Redi-Mix and Osage Community Schools.
Marlene was a longtime member of the Gamma Omega Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi Sorority, Osage Fireman's Auxiliary and Sacred Heart Catholic Church. She enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren, camping, cooking, was known for her excellent pies and was an avid shopper.
She is survived by her husband, Bob Frein, Osage; her children, Theresa (Richard) Grimm, Osage, Todd (Jen) Frein, Osage, and Tonya (Terry) Adams, Osage; her mother, Janette Dahley, Osage; a sister, Corrine (Ron) Gambach, Cedar Rapids; three brothers, Elon (Judy) Dahley, Mason City, Wayne Dahley, Rockwell, and Richard (Jeanne) Dahley, Osage; six grandchildren, Nathan Frein and fiancee, Sarah Hall, Joseph, Jadie and Trevor Frein, and Madison and Cole Adams; her uncle and aunt, Odell and Alice Forslund, Forest City; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her father, Erling Dahley, and her in-laws, Joe and Julia Frein.

BUFFALO CENTER - Herman Gruis, 79, of Buffalo Center, died Friday (Jan. 20, 2006) at the Muse-Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.
The funeral ceremony will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at First Reformed Church in Buffalo Center with Pastor Bill Peake officiating. Interment will be at Olena Mound Cemetery in Buffalo Center.
The visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday at Winter Funeral Home, 414 First St. in Buffalo Center, and also one hour before the ceremony at the church on Tuesday.
Survivors include his wife, Dorothy, of Buffalo Center; his children, Pat Meyer and husband, Roger, of Latimer, Don and his wife, Linda, of Buffalo Center, Dean and his wife, Jeanne, of Ankeny, and Dale and his wife, Dawn, of Indianola; nine grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

NASHUA - Victor L. Johnson, 80, of Nashua died Thursday (Jan. 19, 2006) at Floyd County Memorial Hospital in Charles City.
Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Nashua with Father Don Czapla officiating. Burial will be at a later date in St. Boniface Cemetery at Ionia.

NORTHWOOD - Karen Kruse, 98, formerly of Northwood, died Tuesday (Jan. 17, 2006) in the home of her granddaughter with family at her side in Escondido, Calif.
The funeral will be held at 1:30 p.m. Monday at Schroeder and Sites Funeral Home, Highway 65 South in Northwood, with the Rev. Wayne Hagen officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Rest Cemetery, Northwood.
Visitation will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. today at Schroeder and Sites Funeral Home, in Northwood.
Karen was born March 18, 1907, in Copenhagen, Denmark, the daughter of Marie and Paul Pedersen. Karen traveled to the United States in 1913 with her parents and siblings and settled in Northwood. She attended school in Northwood and was confirmed at First Lutheran Church in Northwood.
She was united in marriage to Vernon A. Kruse on March 27, 1926, in Northwood. They lived and farmed east of Northwood until Vern died in 1958. Karen continued to live on the farm with her son, Kenneth, until he died in 1995. She then moved to Northwood and resided with her daughter, Charlotte (Susie), and husband, Bob, until Susie died in 2004. Since that time, she has divided her time between her granddaughters, Karen (Paul) Hendrikson of Escondido, Calif., and Laura (Mike) Richter of Cedar Falls.
Karen was an avid seamstress, cook, gardener, and helped on the farm. After moving, she continued sewing and reading and writing letters as long as her health allowed, but her greatest enjoyment was her family and grandchildren. Her greatest strength was her memory; she was a great historian and family resource. Her family loved to hear her recall memories that ranged from crossing the ocean with her family at the age of six, to fishing trips up north, to harvesting corn by hand.
Left to cherish her memory are granddaughters, Karen and husband, Paul Hendrikson, of Escondido, Calif., and Laura and husband, Mike Richter, of Cedar Falls; a great-granddaughter, Michelle, and husband, Juan Torres, of Poway, Calif.; great-great-grandsons, Paul and Zackary Torres; great-grandson, Michael Hendrikson and wife, Jennifer, of Ramona, Calif.; great-great-grandson, Dylan; great-granddaughter, Beth Richter of Leadville, Colo.; step-grandsons, Jason Richter, wife Sheila, and their children, Alexis and Collin, of Cedar Falls, and Chad Richter, wife Melanie, their children, Grace and Gavin, of Cedar Falls; step-granddaughter, Megan, her children, Jake and Tyler, of Waterloo; son-in-law, Robert (Bob) Sistek, Northwood; along with several nieces, nephews, and friends.
Preceding Karen in death was her parents; husband, Vernon; son, Kenneth; daughter, Susie; a sister, Clara Whitesell; and brothers, Erik and Elmer Pedersen.

CLEAR LAKE - Florence Riggs, 86, 32 Long Beach, 5851 S. Shore Drive, Clear Lake, died Friday (Jan. 20, 2006) at Muse-Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday (Jan. 29, 2006) at the Clear Lake United Methodist Church, 508 Second Ave. N. in Clear Lake, with the Rev. Jan Burnett officiating.
Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St. in Clear Lake, is in charge of arrangements.
Memorials may be given to the Clear Lake United Methodist Church.
Florence Lorraine (Farnham) Riggs was the fifth child of Sarah and Fred Farnham, born in Hewitt, Minn., on Feb. 26, 1919. Florence's father was a minister in small Iowa churches: LeMars, Galt, Lamoille, Farnhamville and Rowan. Florence graduated from Rowan High School in 1936. She attended junior college in Hibbing, Minn., and graduated from the secretarial program.
Florence was working at First State Bank in Webster City when she met Robert Riggs at the Webster City EUB Church. Florence and Robert were married March l, 1942, in Ames.
The first four years of their marriage was spent moving around to Robert's Army assignments. After the Army, Robert and Florence were in Iowa City while Robert completed college.
In 1951, the family moved to Clinton, where Robert worked at Jane Lamb Hospital. They lived there until 1954. By now they had three children: Brian, Ruth Ann and Gail.
In June of 1954, Florence and Robert were accepted as missionaries of the Methodist Church and assigned to Korea. The family's departure was delayed in Seattle to wait for the birth of Eric, who made his appearance in November of 1955.
In March of 1956 the family sailed to Seoul, Korea. Robert worked as administrator to Severance Hospital in the capital of Seoul. Florence became fairly fluent in the Korean language, worked with widows from the Korean War and also worked on the staff of the Yonsie Medical College and Severance Hospital in addition to setting up the house.
In 1968, Robert and Florence completed their mission term and returned to the United States. They have since worked and lived in Ames, Clinton, Cedar Rapids, Sidney and finally retired to Clear Lake in 1985.
Florence was a member of Clear Lake First United Methodist Church and a member of UMW.
Florence is survived by her husband, Robert, and two children, Brian Riggs and his wife, Gail, Point of Rocks, Md., and Gail Meyer and her husband, Lother, of Clear Lake; and six grandchildren who have blessed her life.
Florence was preceded in death by her parents and all her brothers and sisters, and her children, Ruth Ann and Eric.

GARNER - Herbert Schubert, 90, of Garner died Wednesday (Jan. 18, 2006) at Hospice of the Valley in Tempe, Ariz.
Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Garner with the Rev. Dale Glawatz officiating. Burial will be in Crystal Township Cemetery, Crystal Lake, with military rites by the Crystal Lake Veterans Ceremonial Unit.
Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday at Cataldo Funeral Chapel in Garner and one hour prior to services at the church.
Herbert W. H. Schubert, the first child of Wilhelm and Dorothea (Lau) Schubert, was born Aug. 1, 1915, on a farm northeast of Britt. He was baptized and confirmed at First Lutheran Church in Britt. Herb attended country school at Britt No. 5 through the eighth grade and graduated from Britt High School in 1935. He continued his education at Britt Junior College for one semester.
Herb then worked for various farmers in the Britt area and in 1936 did road work for Harry Riehm.
On April 16, 1941, he married Ruth Sorenson at the Methodist Church in Crystal Lake. He joined the Army Air Corps in 1942 and was stationed at Douglas, Ariz. He served in the South Pacific during World War II on New Guinea and Okinawa. He was in the 89th Squadron, 3rd Bomber Attack Group, 5th Air Force, and worked on A20 and B25 airplanes. He was honorably discharged in 1946 after attaining a sergeant-750 rating and 747 mechanical rating.
After the war, he worked as a Hancock County equipment operator at the Garner Roller Mills and did road work for three construction companies. He was also a Surge dealer for six years. He then worked for Urich Implement in Garner and for Sorenson Hardware in Crystal Lake. His last employment years were spent working construction for Maudlin, Weaver and Martin Marietta. He retired in 1983 at the age of 70.
He was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church, was a charter member of the Garner Jr. Chamber of Commerce and a life member of the Garner VFW and the Crystal Lake American Legion.
Herb is survived by his children, Roland (Pam) Schubert of St. Ansgar, Althea (Jim) Bussert of Mesa, Ariz., and Mark Schubert of Miami, Fla.; grandchildren, Del (Carol) Schubert, Sana (Mike) Iverson, Shelli Schubert, David (Helen) Schubert and Kaila Bussert and husband, Ziad Fahmy; great-grandchildren, Abby and Garrett Schubert and Emily Iverson; two sisters, Alida Baack and Norma Navratil; a brother, Walter Schubert; sisters-in-law, Janice Schubert, Juanita Schubert, Wilma, Genevieve, Marjorie and Leona (Kenneth) Sorenson, Doryce Hanna, Dottie (Gary) Brown, Paulette (Ron) Dahl, and Beth (Ed) Barnum; brothers-in-law, Lee Duss and Laverne Holtorf; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth, in 1997; parents; sister, Lena Duss; brothers, Wilbert and Ewalt Schubert; brothers-in-law, Howard Baack, Louis Navratil, Harlan, Russell, Calvin and Morris Sorenson, Mervin Otis and Bruce Hanna; and sisters-in-law, Evelyn Schubert, Lois Otis, Marvella Holtorf and Jerry Sorenson.

CLEAR LAKE - Franklin "Frank" Ray Baker, 84, of Clear Lake, died Friday (Jan. 20, 2006) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa, in Mason City.
Memorial services will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday at Zion Lutheran Church, 112 N. Fourth St., Clear Lake, with the Rev. Dean Hess officiating.
Family will greet friends from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday at Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St., Clear Lake. The family will also greet friends one hour prior to service time on Tuesday at the church.
Franklin Ray Baker was born on Aug. 15, 1921, the son of Ray Miles and Maytie (Cobb) Baker in rural Clear Lake. He attended and received his elementary education at Baker's School in Lake Township, graduating from Clear Lake High School in 1939. Following his high school graduation, he farmed with his family at Baker's Corner east of Clear Lake. In 1942, he worked for the U.S. government in Washington D.C.
He was united in marriage to Ruth Elaine Jensen on June 20, 1943, at Zion Lutheran Church in Clear Lake, and to this union two sons were born, Jon F. Baker and Michael R. Baker. Frank was inducted into the U.S. Army Air Corps and trained as a tail gunner on a B-24 aircraft, and was retained as an instructor during World War II. He was honorably discharged as staff sergeant in 1946. After his honorable discharge, Frank returned to farm with B.F. Baker & Sons and farmed in the Clear Lake area all his life. Frank and Ruth moved from the farm into Clear Lake in 1980.
In the early 1970s, Frank and Ruth enjoyed traveling to many parts of the U.S. He particularly enjoyed his years of travel.
In 1974, he resumed farming with his son, Mike, and family.
He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Clear Lake, and also served on various church, civic, school, and farm related boards, some of them being: Lake Township School Board, Clear Lake School Board, director of the Clear Lake Livestock Shippers Association Board, and the Farmers Cooperative Board.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Ruth Elaine Baker of Clear Lake; two sons, Jon Franklin Baker and his wife, Mary Kathryn, of Bloomfield Hills, Mich., and Michael Ray Baker and his wife, Mary, of Clear Lake; four grandchildren, Heather Eidt and her husband, John, Jeff Baker, David Baker and his wife, Gina, and Mark Baker; two great-grandchildren, Elizabeth (Lizzie) and John (Jack) Eidt; a sister, Madge Brandau of Osage; as well as other relatives and many friends.
His parents preceded him in death.

MESERVEY - Eugene "Bussy" Buss, 54, of Meservey, died Friday (Jan. 20, 2006) in Clear Lake.
Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday at Retz-Grarup Funeral Home in Thornton with the Rev. Milton D. Johnson of St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church in Thornton presiding. Interment will be in Pleasant View Cemetery in Thornton.
Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home with a Masonic Rites Service at 7:30 p.m.
Eugene Marius Buss was born Dec. 15, 1951, in Hampton, a son of Otto and Irene (Neve) Buss. He was confirmed at St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church and graduated from Meservey-Thornton High School. Eugene attended NIACC, UNI and DMACC, taking agriculture courses.
Eugene worked as a truck driver for Kuhlmeier Farms and hauled beans for many area farmers. He also worked at Donna's Lounge in Meservey and was known for his famous "Bussy Burger."
Devoted in service as a Mason, Eugene was a Past Master of Benevolence Lodge 145, a member of El Kahir Shrine, served as Past President of the North Iowa Shrine Club and was a Master Artisan in the Order of Quetzalcoatl.
Eugene collected miniature farm implements and enjoyed his dog, Queenie. He looked forward to spending time with people while he worked at Donna's on the weekends.
Eugene is survived by his mother, Irene Buss, of Meservey; three brothers: Curtis (Victoria) Buss, of Mason City; Larry (Glenda) Buss, of Mason City; and Gordon (Carmen) Buss, Ridgeway; nieces and nephews: Rebecka (Casey) Hebert, Julie (Mark) Melver, Noah and Jacob Buss; and a whole host of friends and relatives.
He is preceded in death by his father, paternal and maternal grandparents, and one infant brother.

GREENE - Verl Landers, 63, of Greene, died Saturday (Jan. 21, 2006) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.
Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Peter Lutheran Church, Greene, with Pastor Gary Hatcher officiating. Burial will be in the Rose Hill Cemetery, Greene.
Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. Monday at Reid's Funeral Chapel, 519 N. First St. in Greene, where there will be a public Scripture service at 7 p.m. Visitation will continue one hour before services at the church on Tuesday.

MASON CITY - Isabella Faith Newman, stillborn baby of Terry and Lorisa (Kraft) Newman, died Thursday, (Jan. 19, 2006) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Parkway Funeral Services, 2330 Tyler Parkway, Bismarck, N.D.

Born an Angel on Jan. 19, 2006, she touched the hearts of many. She loved to hear her Dad's voice and entertain her Mom every night as she moved around! She taught us all that life is precious.
She is survived by her parents, Terry and Lorisa Newman of Mason City; her grandparents, Ken and Gloria Kraft, Bismarck, N.D, and Ron and Ruth Newman, Dickinson, N.D.; her aunts and uncles, Kip Kraft, Lisa Schestler, Lynelle Kraft and Kyle Kraft, all of Bismarck, N.D., Leonard and LeAnn Bornemann, Center, N.D., Barret Newman, Atlanta, Ga., and Dr. Jerrod Newman, Cheyenne, Wyo.; her precious cousins, Benjamin, McKenzie, Mara, Aubrey, Evan and Mason; her great-grandparents, Mike and Alice Sitter, Granville, N.D., Joe and Mary Kraft, Granville, N.D., and Beulah Nelson, Stanley, N.D.; and many more friends and family that loved her dearly.
She was preceded in death by one sibling through miscarriage; three great-grandparents, Elmer Nelson, Kenneth Newman and Emily Newman; and her aunt, Kristelle Newman.

BRITT - Martha Riggle, 84, of Crystal Lake, passed away Friday (Jan. 20, 2006) at the Hancock County Memorial Hospital in Britt.
Funeral services for Martha Riggle will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the United Methodist Church in Crystal Lake with the Rev. Charles Wallace officiating. Burial will take place in the Crystal Lake Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 5 until 7 p.m. today at the Ewing Dugger Funeral Chapel, 178 Center Street West in Britt, and one hour prior to the services at the church on Tuesday.
Martha Riggle, the daughter of Emmanuel and Anna Elgland Monsen, was born on Sept. 28, 1921, in Winnebago County, Iowa. She attended country schools until moving to Forest City to baby-sit for families.
On Jan. 9, 1941, Martha married Ernest Riggle at Grant Church in rural Winnebago County. The couple farmed in the Crystal Lake and Hayfield areas before moving to the home place located near Crystal Lake. Martha and Ernest have been farming there for over 50 years.
Martha was a great baker, making numerous wedding cakes. She loved her flowers, especially pink petunias. Martha thoroughly enjoyed working in the fields and even hauled corn into town on numerous occasions.
Martha enjoyed gardening, crocheting and bowling. She loved to travel and just getting in the car and going for a drive. She was a member of both TOPS and the Linden Ladies Club.
Martha is survived by her husband of 65 years, Ernest, and numerous nieces, nephews and other family members.
She was preceded in death by her parents; three sisters, Elsie Wilson, Gladys Meyer, and Ann Jordan, and her brother, Martin Monsen.

CLEAR LAKE - Florence Riggs, 86, 32 Long Beach, 5851 S. Shore Drive, Clear Lake, died Friday (Jan. 20, 2006) at Muse-Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday (Jan. 29, 2006) at the Clear Lake United Methodist Church, 508 Second Ave. N. in Clear Lake, with the Rev. Jan Burnett officiating.
Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St. in Clear Lake, is in charge of arrangements.
Memorials may be given to the Clear Lake United Methodist Church.
Florence Lorraine (Farnham) Riggs was the fifth child of Sarah and Fred Farnham, born in Hewitt, Minn., on Feb. 26, 1919. Florence's father was a minister in small Iowa churches: LeMars, Galt, Lamoille, Farnhamville and Rowan. Florence graduated from Rowan High School in 1936. She attended junior college in Hibbing, Minn., and graduated from the secretarial program.
Florence was working at First State Bank in Webster City when she met Robert Riggs at the Webster City EUB Church. Florence and Robert were married March l, 1942, in Ames.
The first four years of their marriage was spent moving around to Robert's Army assignments. After the Army, Robert and Florence were in Iowa City while Robert completed college.
In 1951, the family moved to Clinton, where Robert worked at Jane Lamb Hospital. They lived there until 1954. By now they had three children: Brian, Ruth Ann and Gail.
In June of 1954, Florence and Robert were accepted as missionaries of the Methodist Church and assigned to Korea. The family's departure was delayed in Seattle to wait for the birth of Eric, who made his appearance in November of 1955.
In March of 1956 the family sailed to Seoul, Korea. Robert worked as administrator to Severance Hospital in the capital of Seoul. Florence became fairly fluent in the Korean language, worked with widows from the Korean War and also worked on the staff of the Yonsie Medical College and Severance Hospital in addition to setting up the house.
In 1968, Robert and Florence completed their mission term and returned to the United States. They have since worked and lived in Ames, Clinton, Cedar Rapids, Sidney and finally retired to Clear Lake in 1985.
Florence was a member of Clear Lake First United Methodist Church and a member of UMW.
Florence is survived by her husband, Robert, and two children, Brian Riggs and his wife, Gail, Point of Rocks, Md., and Gail Meyer and her husband, Lother, of Clear Lake; and six grandchildren who have blessed her life.
Florence was preceded in death by her parents and all her brothers and sisters, and her children, Ruth Ann and Eric.

GARNER - Herbert Schubert, 90, of Garner died Wednesday (Jan. 18, 2006) at Hospice of the Valley in Tempe, Ariz.
Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Garner with the Rev. Dale Glawatz officiating. Burial will be in Crystal Township Cemetery, Crystal Lake, with military rites by the Crystal Lake Veterans Ceremonial Unit.
Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday at Cataldo Funeral Chapel in Garner and one hour prior to services at the church.
Herbert W. H. Schubert, the first child of Wilhelm and Dorothea (Lau) Schubert, was born Aug. 1, 1915, on a farm northeast of Britt. He was baptized and confirmed at First Lutheran Church in Britt. Herb attended country school at Britt No. 5 through the eighth grade and graduated from Britt High School in 1935. He continued his education at Britt Junior College for one semester.
Herb then worked for various farmers in the Britt area and in 1936 did road work for Harry Riehm.
On April 16, 1941, he married Ruth Sorenson at the Methodist Church in Crystal Lake. He joined the Army Air Corps in 1942 and was stationed at Douglas, Ariz. He served in the South Pacific during World War II on New Guinea and Okinawa. He was in the 89th Squadron, 3rd Bomber Attack Group, 5th Air Force, and worked on A20 and B25 airplanes. He was honorably discharged in 1946 after attaining a sergeant-750 rating and 747 mechanical rating.
After the war, he worked as a Hancock County equipment operator at the Garner Roller Mills and did road work for three construction companies. He was also a Surge dealer for six years. He then worked for Urich Implement in Garner and for Sorenson Hardware in Crystal Lake. His last employment years were spent working construction for Maudlin, Weaver and Martin Marietta. He retired in 1983 at the age of 70.
He was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church, was a charter member of the Garner Jr. Chamber of Commerce and a life member of the Garner VFW and the Crystal Lake American Legion.
Herb is survived by his children, Roland (Pam) Schubert of St. Ansgar, Althea (Jim) Bussert of Mesa, Ariz., and Mark Schubert of Miami, Fla.; grandchildren, Del (Carol) Schubert, Sana (Mike) Iverson, Shelli Schubert, David (Helen) Schubert and Kaila Bussert and husband, Ziad Fahmy; great-grandchildren, Abby and Garrett Schubert and Emily Iverson; two sisters, Alida Baack and Norma Navratil; a brother, Walter Schubert; sisters-in-law, Janice Schubert, Juanita Schubert, Wilma, Genevieve, Marjorie and Leona (Kenneth) Sorenson, Doryce Hanna, Dottie (Gary) Brown, Paulette (Ron) Dahl, and Beth (Ed) Barnum; brothers-in-law, Lee Duss and Laverne Holtorf; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth, in 1997; parents; sister, Lena Duss; brothers, Wilbert and Ewalt Schubert; brothers-in-law, Howard Baack, Louis Navratil, Harlan, Russell, Calvin and Morris Sorenson, Mervin Otis and Bruce Hanna; and sisters-in-law, Evelyn Schubert, Lois Otis, Marvella Holtorf and Jerry Sorenson.

ST. ANSGAR - Otto H. Tesch, 91, of St. Ansgar, died on Saturday (Jan. 21, 2006) at the Good Samaritan Center in St. Ansgar.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. today at the First Lutheran Church, St. Ansgar, with the Rev. Robert Porisch officiating. Burial will be in the St. Ansgar Cemetery with military rites by the Walter T. Enneberg Post 358 of the American Legion.
Visitation was held from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday at the Schroeder & Sites Funeral Home in St. Ansgar.
Otto was born on Oct. 9, 1914, in Toeterville, to Otto E. and Mathilda (Groth) Tesch. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Toeterville. He attended school in Toeterville until the eighth grade, when he started to help on the family farm.
Otto married Irma Kleinwort on June 6, 1937. They lived all their married lives at two different locations in St. Ansgar. Otto served in the U. S. Army during World War II. After being honorably discharged, he entered into trucking, retiring at the age of 84 in 1998. Otto enjoyed his tinkering and also the pastime of socializing.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Irma; three brothers, twins in infancy and Alvin Tesch; five sisters, Matie Torney, Elsie Decklever, Agnes Decklever, Betty Rohne and Margaret Murphy.
Otto is survived by three daughters, Virginia Boerjan of St. Ansgar, Roberta Krumweide of Council Bluffs and Vivian Lampe of Lenexa, Kansas; one son, Don Tesch of St. Ansgar; 10 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; one sister, Mathilda Olsen of Horseshoe Bend, Ark., and one brother, Rudy Tesch of St. Ansgar.

MESERVEY - Eugene "Bussy" Buss, 54, of Meservey, died Friday (Jan. 20, 2006) in Clear Lake.
Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday at Retz-Grarup Funeral Home in Thornton with the Rev. Milton D. Johnson of St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church in Thornton presiding. Interment will be in Pleasant View Cemetery in Thornton.
Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home with a Masonic Rites Service at 7:30 p.m.
Eugene Marius Buss was born Dec. 15, 1951, in Hampton, a son of Otto and Irene (Neve) Buss. He was confirmed at St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church and graduated from Meservey-Thornton High School. Eugene attended NIACC, UNI and DMACC, taking agriculture courses.
Eugene worked as a truck driver for Kuhlmeier Farms and hauled beans for many area farmers. He also worked at Donna's Lounge in Meservey and was known for his famous "Bussy Burger."
Devoted in service as a Mason, Eugene was a Past Master of Benevolence Lodge 145, a member of El Kahir Shrine, served as Past President of the North Iowa Shrine Club and was a Master Artisan in the Order of Quetzalcoatl.
Eugene collected miniature farm implements and enjoyed his dog, Queenie. He looked forward to spending time with people while he worked at Donna's on the weekends.
Eugene is survived by his mother, Irene Buss, of Meservey; three brothers: Curtis (Victoria) Buss, of Mason City; Larry (Glenda) Buss, of Mason City; and Gordon (Carmen) Buss, Ridgeway; nieces and nephews: Rebecka (Casey) Hebert, Julie (Mark) Melver, Noah and Jacob Buss; and a whole host of friends and relatives.
He is preceded in death by his father, paternal and maternal grandparents, and one infant brother.

OSAGE - Marlene Andrea Frein, 64, of Osage, died Friday (Jan. 20, 2006) at the Mitchell County Regional Health Center Hospice Unit in Osage following a courageous battle with cancer.
A Memorial Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Osage with the Rev. John Moser officiating. Inurnment will be at Sacred Heart Cemetery.
There will be a gathering of family and friends from 4 to 6:30 p.m. today at the Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home in Osage, where there will be a Scripture service at 6:30 p.m.
She was born May 4, 1941, in Osage, the daughter of Erling O. and M. Janette (Forslund) Dahley. Marlene grew up on a farm southwest of Osage, was baptized and confirmed at Rock Creek Lutheran Church, and was later confirmed in the Catholic faith.
Marlene attended elementary school in Rudd, junior high school in Osage, graduated from Osage High School in 1959 and was a graduate of Minneapolis Business College. Marlene married Bob Frein on May 21, 1960, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Osage.
She was employed by Virgil Johnston Real Estate, Croell Redi-Mix and Osage Community Schools.
Marlene was a longtime member of the Gamma Omega Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi Sorority, Osage Fireman's Auxiliary and Sacred Heart Catholic Church. She enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren, camping, cooking, was known for her excellent pies and was an avid shopper.
She is survived by her husband, Bob Frein, Osage; her children, Theresa (Richard) Grimm, Osage, Todd (Jen) Frein, Osage, and Tonya (Terry) Adams, Osage; her mother, Janette Dahley, Osage; a sister, Corrine (Ron) Gambach, Cedar Rapids; three brothers, Elon (Judy) Dahley, Mason City, Wayne Dahley, Rockwell, and Richard (Jeanne) Dahley, Osage; six grandchildren, Nathan Frein and fiancee, Sarah Hall, Joseph, Jadie and Trevor Frein, and Madison and Cole Adams; her uncle and aunt, Odell and Alice Forslund, Forest City; and many nieces and nephews.

GARNER - Herbert Schubert, 90, of Garner died Wednesday (Jan. 18, 2006) at Hospice of the Valley in Tempe, Ariz.
Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Garner with the Rev. Dale Glawatz officiating. Burial will be in Crystal Township Cemetery, Crystal Lake, with military rites by the Crystal Lake Veterans Ceremonial Unit.
Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday at Cataldo Funeral Chapel in Garner and one hour prior to services at the church.
Herbert W. H. Schubert, the first child of Wilhelm and Dorothea (Lau) Schubert, was born Aug. 1, 1915, on a farm northeast of Britt. He was baptized and confirmed at First Lutheran Church in Britt. Herb attended country school at Britt No. 5 through the eighth grade and graduated from Britt High School in 1935. He continued his education at Britt Junior College for one semester.
Herb then worked for various farmers in the Britt area and in 1936 did road work for Harry Riehm.
On April 16, 1941, he married Ruth Sorenson at the Methodist Church in Crystal Lake. He joined the Army Air Corps in 1942 and was stationed at Douglas, Ariz. He served in the South Pacific during World War II on New Guinea and Okinawa. He was in the 89th Squadron, 3rd Bomber Attack Group, 5th Air Force, and worked on A20 and B25 airplanes. He was honorably discharged in 1946 after attaining a sergeant-750 rating and 747 mechanical rating.
After the war, he worked as a Hancock County equipment operator at the Garner Roller Mills and did road work for three construction companies. He was also a Surge dealer for six years. He then worked for Urich Implement in Garner and for Sorenson Hardware in Crystal Lake. His last employment years were spent working construction for Maudlin, Weaver and Martin Marietta. He retired in 1983 at the age of 70.
He was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church, was a charter member of the Garner Jr. Chamber of Commerce and a life member of the Garner VFW and the Crystal Lake American Legion.
Herb is survived by his children, Roland (Pam) Schubert of St. Ansgar, Althea (Jim) Bussert of Mesa, Ariz., and Mark Schubert of Miami, Fla.; grandchildren, Del (Carol) Schubert, Sana (Mike) Iverson, Shelli Schubert, David (Helen) Schubert and Kaila Bussert and husband, Ziad Fahmy; great-grandchildren, Abby and Garrett Schubert and Emily Iverson; two sisters, Alida Baack and Norma Navratil; a brother, Walter Schubert; sisters-in-law, Janice Schubert, Juanita Schubert, Wilma, Genevieve, Marjorie and Leona (Kenneth) Sorenson, Doryce Hanna, Dottie (Gary) Brown, Paulette (Ron) Dahl, and Beth (Ed) Barnum; brothers-in-law, Lee Duss and Laverne Holtorf; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth, in 1997; parents; sister, Lena Duss; brothers, Wilbert and Ewalt Schubert; brothers-in-law, Howard Baack, Louis Navratil, Harlan, Russell, Calvin and Morris Sorenson, Mervin Otis and Bruce Hanna; and sisters-in-law, Evelyn Schubert, Lois Otis, Marvella Holtorf and Jerry Sorenson.

CHARLES CITY - Thelma Newton Sills, 84, of Charles City, died Sunday (Jan. 22, 2006) at her home.
Funeral services for Thelma Sills will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday (Jan. 30, 2006) at the Trinity United Methodist Church in Charles City with Pastor Paul Wilcox officiating. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery at Floyd.
Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the Hauser Funeral Home, 1205 S. Main in Charles City. Visitation will continue one hour prior to services on Monday at the church.

ST. ANSGAR - Otto H. Tesch, 91, of St. Ansgar, died on Saturday (Jan. 21, 2006) at the Good Samaritan Center in St. Ansgar.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. today at the First Lutheran Church, St. Ansgar, with the Rev. Robert Porisch officiating. Burial will be in the St. Ansgar Cemetery with military rites by the Walter T. Enneberg Post 358 of the American Legion.
Visitation was held from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday at the Schroeder & Sites Funeral Home in St. Ansgar.
Otto was born on Oct. 9, 1914, in Toeterville, to Otto E. and Mathilda (Groth) Tesch. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Toeterville. He attended school in Toeterville until the eighth grade, when he started to help on the family farm.
Otto married Irma Kleinwort on June 6, 1937. They lived all their married lives at two different locations in St. Ansgar. Otto served in the U. S. Army during World War II. After being honorably discharged, he entered into trucking, retiring at the age of 84 in 1998. Otto enjoyed his tinkering and also the pastime of socializing.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Irma; three brothers, twins in infancy and Alvin Tesch; five sisters, Matie Torney, Elsie Decklever, Agnes Decklever, Betty Rohne and Margaret Murphy.
Otto is survived by three daughters, Virginia Boerjan of St. Ansgar, Roberta Krumweide of Council Bluffs and Vivian L | | | | | | | |
