James C. Greiman, 1941-2001

Garner native James C. Greiman, died on Tuesday, May 1, 2001, in Modesto, California, following a brief illness. He was 59.

The Garner Veteran's Ceremonial Unit will conduct private graveside services at 1:30 p.m., on Friday, May 11, at the Concord Township Cemetery in Garner.

James Charles Greiman, was born on June 13, 1941 in Garner. He was the son of Norman and Margaret (Engstler) Greiman. He was a 1959 graduate of the Garner High School and served in the United States Air Force for eight years. He retired from Control Data Corp. after 25 years. For the past three years he was employed by Manteca Equipment Rental.

Mr. Greiman enjoyed gardening, working on his '65 Comet and especially spending time with his grandchildren. He was an avid NASCAR race fan.

Survivors include his son, Scott and wife, Sebrina of Manteca, California; daughter, Kristen Reed and husband, Greg of Modesto, California; grandchildren, Shelby and Samantha; four brothers, Daryl of Garner, Russel of Spirit Lake, Patrick and wife, Jane of Manteca, California and Joseph and wife, Sharon of The Dalles, Oregon; sister, Linda Rapp and husband, James of Clear Lake; several nieces and nephews; and his former wife, Marlene.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Thomas; and a nephew, Joshua Greiman.

Karl-Heinz Rasche, 1921-2001

Karl-Heinz Rasche, 79, of Plantation, Florida, died on Tuesday, May 1, 2001, at the Vitas Hospice in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

A viewing and celebration of life was held on Saturday, May 5, at the Fred Hunter's Funeral Home in Davie, Florida. A viewing and celebration of life will also be held from 12 noon to 2:00 p.m., on Friday, May 11, at the Cataldo Funeral Home, Garner.

Burial will be in the Memorial Park Cemetery, Mason City. Casket bearers are Bob Malek, Eric Malek, Brent Lester, Mike Seaberg, Jim Steward and Dick Smith.

Karl-Heinz Rasche, the son of Willie and Freda (Probst) Rasche, was born on October 26, 1921, at Stargard, Pomerania, Germany (now Poland). He was educated in Germany and had a Master's Degree in philosophy. Mr. Rasche played keyboard, entertaining across Europe and North Africa. He was director of entertainment at the Garmish American Military Recreational Area and worked at the Ramstein Air Force Base in Germany.

He emigrated to the U.S. in 1963 and settled in Florida where he worked with local bands. Later, he and a friend formed "The Jolly Jacks", a show group, which worked in Miami and the Midwest and then was co-leader of the International Four Plus One, a comedy show group, and ran a patio and casual furniture store.

On November 10, 1974, he was married in Fort Lauderdale to Shirley Malek, formerly of Garner. Mr. Rasche enjoyed oil painting, bowling, football, animals, cooking and traveling in the motor home. A stroke in 1995 left him partially paralyzed and with impaired speech but he always found a way to communicate.

He is survived by his wife, Shirley of Plantation, Florida; a son, Shane Rasche of North Miami, Florida; two grandchildren, Justin and Melissa; his mother-in-law, Helen Malek of Garner; a brother-in-law, Robert Malek of Garner; a sister-in-law, Donna Jacobsen and her husband, Don of Garner; three nephews, Ryan, Brent and Eric; and nieces, Heidi and Crystal.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Jade; a brother; and his father-in-law, Syl Malek.

Delores Johnson, 1930-2001

May 17, 2001

Former Garner resident Delores J. Johnson, of Marshalltown, died on Friday, May 11, 2001, at her home. She was 70.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, May 15, at the Pursel-Davis Funeral Home and Crematory of Marshalltown. Chaplain David Burling of the Homeward Hospice of Ames, officiated. Burial was in the Riverside Cemetery. A memorial fund has been established in her name.

Born June 14, 1930, in Klemme, Delores (Tanner) Johnson, was the daughter of Albert and Rosetta (Schwichenberg) Tanner. She was raised and educated in Klemme and Garner.

Prior to moving to Marshalltown in 1969, she resided in Mason City from 1960 to 1969, and Clear Lake from 1950 to 1959. She was a homemaker and a former member of the Marshalltown Eagles. She was an avid bingo player and enjoyed reading and solving crossword puzzles.

Survivors include four daughters, Vivian Chavez of Pueblo, Colorado, Debora Hunter of Gladbrook, Laurie Johnson of Tama and Pam Johnson of Marshalltown; three sons, Sidney Cuellar of Klemme, James Cuellar of Colorado and David Cuellar of Grinnell; two brothers, George Tanner of Garner and Walter Tanner of Mason City; and three sisters, Anna Carolus of Garner, Beverly Prescott of Klemme and Lorraine Hodak of Aurora, Minnesota.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Clair and Ervin Tanner; a sister, Ione Harms; and a grandson, Jamie King.

1Robert Kirschbaum Jr., 1928-2001

Former Garner resident Robert J. Kirschbaum Jr., of Dubuque, died at the Ennoble Manor Care Center, on Friday, May 11, 2001. He was 73.

Funeral services were held on Monday, May 14, at the St. Joseph the Worker Catholic Church. The Rev. Lyle Wilgenbusch officiated. Burial was in the Mount Olivet Cemetery. Military rites were provided by the American Legion Post #6. The Leonard Funeral Home and Crematory of Dubuque was in charge of the arrangements.

Robert Kirschbaum Jr., was born on May 7, 1928 in Garner, Iowa. He was the son of Robert J. and Marie (Ormsby) Kirschbaum, Sr. He graduated from Loras College in 1950.

On June 18, 1960, Robert Kirschbaum and Shirley Fitzgerald were married at Our Lady of Good Council Church in Fonda. Mr. Kirschbaum was employed by the Des Moines Register from 1951 until his retirement in 1990. After retirement, he worked part-time for the Cedar Rapids Gazette.

He was a member of the St. Joseph the Worker Church where he served as a Minister of Hospitality and helped with Bingo.

Survivors include his wife, Shirley Kirschbaum of Dubuque; a son, Robert J. Kirschbaum III of Chicago; two daughters, Linda Kirschbaum of Chicago and her fiancée, Sean and Laurie Kirschbaum of Chicago; a sister, Rose Marie Kirschbaum of Milwaukee; and a sister-in-law, Mary Dee Schachtner of Fonda.

Sherman P. Arends, 1936-2001

May 17, 2001

Sherman P. Arends, of LuVerne, died on Sunday, May 13, 2001, at the Humboldt County Hospital in Humboldt. He was 64.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, May 16, at 10:30 a.m., at the Zion Lutheran Church of LuVerne. The Rev. Clyde Kieschnick will officiate. Music will be provided by organist, Dennis Holmes who will accompany congregational hymns.

Burial will be in the LuVerne Cemetery. The Garry-Roberts-Murphy-Schaff Funeral Home of LuVerne is in charge of the arrangements. Casket bearers are Troy Schroeder, Bruce Vertanen, Nick Tobey, Jim Duea, Ed Stephenson and Kerry Stripling.

Sherman Paul Arends, was born on September 19, 1936 at Webster City. He was the son of Grover and Melba (Tucker) Arends. A 1954 graduate of the Williams High School, he attended Ellsworth Junior College in Iowa Falls. He graduated from the University of Northern Iowa in 1958.

On June 2, 1963, Sherman Arends and Marcia Anna Stripling were married at the Zion Lutheran Church in LuVerne. Mr. Arends spent his entire teaching career in LuVerne where he taught biology, physical education, middle school science and driver's education. He also coached baseball, track, girl's volleyball and basketball. In 1972, he took his girls basketball team to the Girl's State Tournament in Des Moines.

An active member of the Zion Lutheran Church, Mr. Arends was a former Sunday School Superintendent and Elder. He enjoyed gardening, fishing and watching sports.

Survivors include his wife, Marcia Arends of LuVerne; his children, Joni Torkelson and husband, Dave of Humboldt, Lori Woodruff and husband, Will of LuVerne and Mark Arends and his wife, Kris of Alden, Iowa; seven grandchildren, Thomas and Travis Sullivan, Sara and Nick Torkelson, Brodey Woodruff, Brannon and Kyle Arends; three sisters, Joyce Duea and husband, Jim of Ames, Josie Schroeder and husband, Mel of Fort Dodge and Kathleen Artes and husband, Bob of Britt.

Mr. Arends was preceded in death by his parents; and his sister, Eva Jean Stephenson.

Leona Priebe, 1912-2001

Life long Klemme area resident, Leona Priebe, died on Saturday, May 26, 2001, at the Muse-Norris Hospice Unit in Mason City. She was 89.

Funeral services for Mrs. Priebe were held on Tuesday, May 29, at 1:30 p.m., at the Immanuel Reformed United Church of Christ. Pastor Donna Buckman officiated. Organist, Lynette Nuehring provided music for congregational hymns.

Burial was in the Ell Township Cemetery, Klemme. The Tenold Funeral Home of Klemme and Belmond was in charge of the arrangements. Ushers were Raymond Helps, Luverne Schmidt and Marvin Schmidt. Casket bearers were Edward Gaffney, Steven Ames, Scott Jaberg, Mark Ames, Douglas Ames and Douglas Johnson. Honorary bearers were Randy Gaffney, Nancy Johnson, David Jaberg and Beth Jaberg.

Leona Priebe, was born on March 27, 1912 in Mason City, the daughter of Henry and Margaret (Roths) Buseman. The family moved to Klemme when she was a small child. On May 27, 1931, she was united in marriage to Albert Priebe at the Immanuel Evangelical and Reformed Church in Klemme. Mrs. Priebe led an active life that included careers in farming and real-estate brokerage, which she shared with her late husband. She edited and published a homemakers magazine and often did "job printing" of cookbooks and church publications. She was a long time member of the Mason City Camera Club and for a time sold "advertising specialty" items.

She was honored for her community service by Iowa Governor Terry Branstad in 1990 for her "outstanding volunteer services." She was a member of the Clear Lake Women's Club, North Iowa Women's Shrine Auxiliary, Klemme Grandmothers Club, several garden clubs and the Dorcas Circle at the Klemme United Church of Christ.

Survivors include three daughters, Luella (Jim) Bonner of Clear Lake, Lucille (John) Gaffney of Swaledale and Miriam (Eugene) Jaberg of Fridley, Minnesota; nine grandchildren, Randy and Edward Gaffney, Mark, Steven, Douglas Ames, Nancy Johnson, Scott, Beth and David Jaberg; 12 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and a sister-in-law, Betty Buseman of Clear Lake.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Albert; her parents; a sister, Esther Schlawin; two brothers, Francis and Franklyn Buseman; a grandson, David Ames; and a great-granddaughter, Amy Nieman.

Gerald A. Ramus, 1926-2001

Gerald A. Ramus, of LaVerne, died on Thursday, May 24, 2001, at the North Iowa Mercy Medical Center in Mason City. He was 74.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, May 29, 2001, at 10:30 a.m., in the United Methodist Church at LuVerne, with the Rev. Dale Reisner officiating. Interment was in the LuVerne Cemetery. The Harris Funeral Home of Algona was in charge of the arrangements.

Casket bearers were Benjamin Ramus, Erica Ramus, Kevin Haan, Jacob Haan, Sonya Haan, Jesse Black, Jeremy Black and Brandon Miller.

Gerald A. Ramus, son of Arthur and Ruth Schulz Ramus, was born on June 21, 1926 at LuVerne, where he was raised and educated, graduating from the LuVerne High school in 1944. Gerald was united in marriage to Patricia Burgess on May 15, 1960, at Des Moines and after their marriage, the couple lived in LuVerne their entire married lives.

Gerald worked as an independent trucker, handling gravel for 20 years and then being employed by Standard Oil of Irvington for 14 years. He then worked for Thermogas of Algona until his retirement in 1989.

He was a member of the United Methodist Church at LuVerne and enjoyed fishing and woodworking.

Surviving are his wife, Patricia of LuVerne; sons, Bill of Mankato, Minnesota and Robert of LuVerne; daughters, Andrea Haan of Eldrige, Lisa Black and Lori Miller both of Algona; a brother, Don Ramus of Des Moines; and sisters, Darlene Miller of Ankeny and Dixie Ellston of Des Moines; and eight grandchildren.

His parents preceded him in death.

Francis W. Hinz, 1919-2001

Francis W. Hinz, 82, of LuVerne, died on Thursday, May 31, 2001, in the South Care Center in Humboldt.

Funeral services were held on Monday, June 4, at 10:30 a.m., at the Zion Lutheran Church, LuVerne, with Pastor Clyde Kieschnick officiating. Interment was in the LuVerne Cemetery, LuVerne. The Garry, Roberts, Murphy, Schaaf Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Casket bearers were David Hanselman, Harold Nielson, Jr., Paul Hanselman, George Hanselman, John C. (Bud) Hefty and Wayne Warmbier. Honorary bearers were Henry Hinz, Harold Schipull and Melvin (Bud) Kubly.

Francis Willard Hinz, was born on March 8, 1919 at Whittemore, Iowa, to Henry and Lena Hinz. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran Church. Francis was raised in the Whittemore and LuVerne areas. He attended school in the local country schools and graduated from the Lutheran Parochial School in LuVerne.

After his schooling, he worked on the home farm east of LuVerne. Francis served his country during World War II, as a Medic in the U.S. Army. He served in France and Germany and was awarded the Bronze Star. When Francis returned from the Service, he farmed with his brother, Herbert.

Francis enjoyed visiting family and friends, playing cards, fishing and traveling. He loved little children and considered them "his family". Francis was a member of the Ernest Merkle American Legion Post #664 in LuVerne.

Francis became a resident of the South Care Center in Humboldt, Iowa on November 22, 1999.

Francis is survived by his five sisters, Dorothy Woods and husband, Leonard of Alberta, Minnesota, Geneva Rusher and husband, Harley of Austin, Minnesota, Eunice Harter of Fort Dodge, Iowa, Delores Miller and husband, Bernard of Dubuque, Iowa and Donna Underberg and husband, Joe of Fort Dodge, Iowa; and 11 nieces and nephews.

Francis was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Herbert; and brother-in-law, Cleo Harter.

Francis will be dearly missed, not only by family, but by many friends and neighbors.

Oscar C. Tindall, 1930-2001

Oscar C. Tindall, died suddenly from a heart attack at the Hancock Memorial Hospital in Britt, Iowa, on Monday, May 28, 2001. He was 70.

Funeral services were held on Thursday, May 31, at 10:30 a.m., at the St. John Lutheran Church in Corwith, with Pastor Caroline Engelbrecht officiating. Interment was in the Corwith Cemetery. The Gary-Roberts-Murphy-Schaaf Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Casket bearers were Mike Tindall, Mark Shipman, Gary Ludwig, Paul Tindall, Tom Shipman and Bill Ludwig. Honorary Bearers were Russ Tebben, Gene Dornbier, Bob Shipman, Bob Kraft, Bob Reibsamen, Larry Baker, Bob Berte, Dick Ludwig and Dave Ludwig.

Oscar Charles Tindall, was born on November 1, 1930 in Carbon, Iowa, to James W. and Edna A. Tindall. After attending schools in Nebraska and Iowa, Oscar graduated from the Corwith High School in 1949. Oscar enlisted in the Air Force and served his country from 1951 to 1955. He served at several stations, including the Korean War. On October 2, 1955, Oscar was married to Sylvia Lottick in Orlando, Florida. To this union, three sons were born.

Oscar returned to the Corwith area and spent the rest of his life farming. He was a member of the St. John Lutheran Church and the Elmer Wilson American Legion Post #229 in Corwith.

An avid fisherman, he enjoyed fishing with his grandchildren and friends. He also enjoyed gardening, planting flowers and spending time with his family and friends.

Oscar is survived by his wife, Sylvia of Corwith; sons, Ken Tindall and wife, Jana of Aurora, Illinois, Charles Tindall of Corwith and David Tindall and wife, Connie of Algona; 5 grandchildren, Derek, Hannah, Dustin, Devin and Andrew. Also by his mother, Edna Tindall; sister, Natalie Shipman and husband, Bob; brother; Duane Tindall; and his sister-in-law, Beverly Tindall, all of Corwith, Iowa.

Oscar was preceded in death by his father, James Tindall, Sr.; his brother, James Tindall, Jr.; and a nephew, Timothy Shipman.
