VAN METER - Funeral services for Jerry L. Schimmels of Van Meter were held at 7:00 p.m. on Friday, December 29, 2006 at the United Methodist Church of Van Meter.

Jerry, 33, died Wednesday, December 20, 2006 at home.

Jerry L. Schimmels was born August 1, 1973 in Cedar Falls, IA, the son of Darrel and Nancy Schimmels. He was a graduate of Howard-Winneshiek School District in 1992. He graduated from Lincoln Tech in Des Moines as a Diesel Mechanic in 1993.

On June 28, 2002 he married Brandi Schiegel. Jerry worked at Housby Mack in Des Moines as a diesel mechanic, rebuilding engines, and a lead man for 13 years.

He is survived by his wife Brandi, three children: Zach, Seth and Hanah; his parents: Darrel and Nancy Schimmels of Cresco; a sister: Ann Schimmels; and a nephew: Brian Schimmels of Eldora; a brother: Fred Schimmels (Dottie) of Van Meter; two nieces; and a nephew: Zach, Stormie and Cassie.

He was preceded by his grandfather: Fred B. Schimmels; aunt: Marie Weber; grandfather: Forrest Heuer; grandmother: Frances Heuer; great-aunt: Maxine Porter; and cousin: Malinda (Mindy) Allen.

NEW HAMPTON - Robert William Krueger, age 80 of New Hampton, died Friday, December 29, 2006 at his home.

Funeral services are 10:30 a.m. Thursday, January 4, 2007, at Trinity Lutheran Church, New Hampton with Pastors Kevin Frey and Joel Dahlen officiating. The pall will be placed by Robert's children. Eddie Rausch will be the crossbearer. Organist will be Dr. Raymond Krueger accompanying vocalists Michael Rausch and Gina Larsen.

Burial will be in the New Hampton Cemetery with Stephen Rausch, Laura Riha, Maia Gardner, Dana Ball, Casey Sinnwell and Stephanie Scott as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers are Duane Lynch, Bill Straw and Merle Rochford.

Robert was born September 16, 1926, in Frederika Township, rural Bremer County, IA, the son of Carl and Elsa Louise (Warnke) Krueger. He attended school in Frederika. Robert helped his father on the family farm west of New Hampton. On September 13, 1948, at St. Mary's Rectory in New Hampton, he married Norma M. Schissel. To this union nine children were born. The couple farmed west of New Hampton from 1949 until 1993 when they moved into town. In his early years, Robert enjoyed hunting fox. He spent countless hours fishing at the "Lynch Pond" with his dog, Nick. Robert also enjoyed going to happy hour at Chaff's. Survivers include four sons, Bob (Robin) Krueger of Charles City, Paul (Pat) Krueger of New Hampton, Dr. Raymond (Connie) Krueger of Spring Valley, MN, Gordon (Donita) Krueger of Cedar Falls. Five daughters, Linda (Brian) Rieckenberg of Poulsbo, WA, Karen (Andy) Sinnwell of Forest City, Becky (Dick) Rausch of Ionia, Nancy (William) Gardner of St. Francis, MN, Beth (Jamy) Ball of Mt. Pleasant, IA. Twenty-two grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren. Two brothers, Carl Krueger of New Hampton and Herb Krueger of Tripoli.

Preceding him in death were his parents; his wife Norma on October 12, 2001 and a brother in infancy.

HUMBOLDT - Memorial services for Lois Dale of Humboldt were held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, December 29, 2006 at the Faith United Methodist Church in Humboldt with Rev. Ed Kail officiating. Visitation was held one hour prior to the services at the church. Interment was held in Indian Mound Cemetery, Humboldt.

Lois, 84, died Monday, December 4, 2006 at her daughter's home in Montgomery, AL.

Lois Dale was born September 8, 1922 at Rutland, the daughter of D.P. and Anna (Benjamin) Butler.

On August 23, 1942 she married Kenneth Dale. Following the war, the couple made their home in Humboldt, where Lois was employed by Olson Abstract and later by Corn Belt Power Cooperative. Mr. Dale died in 2002, and Lois continued to maintain her home in Humboldt, until moving to Montgomery, AL in April of 2005.

She was a member of the Faith United Methodist Church and enjoyed her membership in bridge clubs.

She is survived by her children and their spouses: Robert Dale of Mobile, Al, Patricia and Larry Joiner of Cresco, and Cynthia and Michael Ahrendt of Montgomery, AL.

Lois was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Kenneth; and son: Ronald.

Wilbur Elliott “Wil” Kotz

CEDAR RAPIDS - Wilbur Elliott “Wil” Kotz, 60, Cedar Rapids, died Tuesday, December 26, 2006 in his home from complicaitons of lung cancer.

Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Saturday, December 30 at St. Mark's Lutheran Church in Marion.

The family will greet friends from 4 - 9 p.m. Friday at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Center in Marion and one hour prior to services at the church on Saturday.

Graveside services will be 11 a.m. Sunday, December 31 at the New Hampton Cemetery in New Hampton with military honors.

Wil was born July 19, 1946 in Mason City, to Wilbur A. and Altha Mae (Elliott) Kotz. He graduated with the Class of 1964 from New Hampton High School. He was a petty officer with the US Navy and served stateside during the Vietnam War. On April 19, 1969, he married Barbara Jean Riley at St. Mary's Catholic Church in New Hampton. Wil had been employed at McClure Engineering Company of North Liberty as a construction representative.

Survivors include his wife of 38 years, Barb; two daughters, Melanie (Chad) Richter, Cedar Falls and Sarah Kotz, Des Moines; his father, Wilbur (Virginia) Kotz, New Hampton; two grandchildren, Grace and Gavin Richter; a stepgrandson, Nick Harden; his siblings, Tom (Michele) Kotz, Lamoni, Pat Fickbohm, Des Moines, Merry (Rick) Kruger, Charles City, Robb (Cindy) Kotz, New Hampton, Kate (Mark) Van Tassel, Rochester, MN, Sue (Loren Buser) Kotz, Waterloo; his in-laws, Al and Kate Riley, New Hampton; five brothers-in-law, Bill (Judy) Riley, Steve (Deb) Riley, Tim (Deb) Riley, Richard (Denise) Riley, Tom (Jennifer) Riley, all of New Hampton; 30 nieces andnephews.

Irene, 87, died Friday, December 29, 2006 at the Cresco Care Center in Cresco.

Irene Mildred Hove was born January 2, 1919 in Winneshiek County, IA the daughter of Herbert and Lena (Bigalk) Anderson. She was baptized on January 19, 1919 at Orleans Lutheran Church, and confirmed on July 3, 1932 at Orleans Lutheran Church.

She married Norman Hove on June 22, 1938 at Orleans Lutheran Church. To this union four children were born.

She graduated from high school and took the teacher course in Cedar Falls, IA. She taught in the Ridgeway area until she stopped to raise her family. She worked at the Cliff House in Decorah, Hovden Grocery in Ridgeway, and her last job was at the Firemans in Ridgeway.

She is survived by her children: Sharron (Vern) Meyer of Cresco, Connie (Allyn) Linderbaum of Ridgeway, Linda (Dave) Lundak of Albert Lea, MN, John (Carol) Hove of Ridgeway; 10 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; one great-great grandchild; one sister: Alice Anderson; and one brother: Raymond Anderson.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Norman; her parents; one brother: Gerald; one sister: Emma; and a grandson: Kirk Hove in 1973.

LAWLER - Vernice L. Reicks, 92, Lawler, died Monday, December 25, 2006 at the New Hampton Care Center.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10:30 a.m. Thursday, December 28 at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church, Lawler, with Rev. Marvin Salz as celebrant and Rev. Peter Bodensteiner as concelebrant. Her husband, Neal and their daughters will place the pall on the casket. Granddaughters, Jennessa Einwalter and Abigail Reicks will be lectors. Her sons will present the offertory gifts. Music for the service will be provided by Renea Huinker as organist, accompanying Bob Huinker as vocalist.

Interment will be in the church cemetery with grandsons, Chris Dallenbach, Joel Reicks, Joshua Reicks, Jeremy Scheidel, Nathan Scheidel, Casey Scheidel, Zachary Reicks and Benjamin Reicks as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers are granddaughters Rian Dallenbach, Kelly Dallenbach, Jennessa Einwalter, Alison Reicks, Abigail Reicks and Annalee Reicks.

Vernice was born August 20, 1914 in rural Dunkerton, the daughter of Charles and Bertha (Owen) Eldridge. She graduated from Dunkerton High School in 1932. On June 15, 1939, in Nashua, she married C. Harold Nutt of Isle, MN. Harold died in an automobile accident on January 17, 1951. Their daughter, Nancy, was 17 months old at the time. Vernice graduated from Hawkeye College of Nursing in 1957 and was employed at St. Francis Hospital, Waterloo, in the pediatrics department until June 1965. On July 20, 1965, she married Neal Reicks, Lawler, along with his seven children who were all at home at the time.

Vernice had a passion for painting and gardening, especially flowers. She loved to bowl and enjoyed traveling. Her greatest joy in life was raising her eight children and spending time with her family.

Surviving are her husband, Neal; their children, Lois (Lance) Thorkelson, Rochester, MN; Elaine Reicks, Fayette; Nancy (Tom) Dallenbach, Waterloo; Carol Reicks, Sun City West, AZ; Jane (Tim) Scheidel and Jim (Shari) Reicks, Lawler; Mark (Karen) Reicks, Osakis, MN; John (Lynnie) Reicks, Lawler; 18 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren.

Preceded in death by her first husband; a granddaughter, Jill Alice Reicks; four sisters, Marie Hemsath, Mabel Ackerman, Bessie Kirman and Bertha Hendrickson; four brothers, Clarence, Elmer, Claude and Charles Eldridge.

NASHUA - Arthur W. Jahn age 88, of Nashua, Iowa passed away on Tuesday at the Floyd County Memorial Hospital in Charles City, Iowa.

Funeral services will be held at the Lindstrom Funeral Home in Riceville on Saturday, January 13 at 2:00 p.m. with the Rev. Michael Parris officiating.

Burial will be in the St. Peter's Cemetery in Riceville with military honors conducted by the American Legion Roy Gue Post 244.

Friends may call at the funeral home on Friday during the hours of 4:00 to 7:00 p.m.

Arthur Walter Jahn was born on June 29, 1918 in Winner, South Dakota to William and Emma (Behrens) Jahn. Arthur served his country during World War ll in the Air Force. After four years in the service Arthur was united in marriage to Geneva Andersen in Nebraska. They farmed in western Iowa near Aurelia and then moved in 1963 to a farm near McIntire, Iowa. Arthur also worked for seventeen years at White Motors in Charles City and took great pride as a final inspector. He enjoyed camping, fishing and woodworking. Arthur was a loving father and husband.

Survivors include his wife, Geneva of Nashua; two sons, Bill (Linda), Acworth, GA, and Randy, Dodge Center, MN; three daughters, Linda (Dennis) Bingham, Rochester, MN, Judy (Richard) Lenoch, of Oronoco, MN and Susan (Richard) Seelhammer, Waterloo. Also surviving are six grandchildren, two step-grandchildren, four great grandchildren, two step-great-grandchildren; a sister, Helen (Sid) Collomy, Parsonsfield, MA; a sister-in- law, Velma Jahn, Eudora, Kansas and many nieces and nephews.

CRESCO - Funeral services for Raymond “Ray” J. McGee of Cresco, IA were held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, January 6, 2007 at Notre Dame Parish-St. Joseph Worship Center in Cresco with Rev. Richard J. Ament officiating. Readers were Bill Stegman and Steve Frels; gifts were carried by Nancy and Abby Larson; Eucharistic Minister was Val Frels; organist was Wendy Schatz; and cantor was Joe Wacha. Honorary pallbearers were: Katie Jo Bruhn, Amy Kelly, Rebecca Jarosh, Kelli Abrahamson, Maria Leitz, Eric Reinhart, Jay McGee, Nicholas McGee, and Samantha McGee. Pallbearers were: Chelsi Igel, Liz Niess, Mike Jarosh, Brad Niess, Mike Niess, Kris McGee, John McGee, and Jeremy McGee. Interment was in Calvary Cemetery in Cresco.

Visitation was held at the Conway Funeral Home in Cresco from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m. on Friday and for one hour prior to services on Saturday at the church.

Ray, 85, died Tuesday, January 2, 2007 at the Winneshiek County Medical Center in Decorah, IA.

Raymond James McGee was born July 24, 1921 on a farm northeast of Elma, IA, the son of John Sylvester and Anna Mary (Knippling) McGee. He was raised on the farm which gave him the background to mold him into the man that he became. He received only an eighth grade education, but became a man of knowledge. When our nation came under attack, Ray volunteered to serve his country and never gave up the love of the symbol which represented our land of the free.

When Ray returned home from the service, he married Marjorie Burr on February 6, 1947 in the Assumption Catholic Church. They set up farming in Winneshiek County, east of Cresco and would have remained there, but Ray's health got the best of him and he had to give up farming. Even after he moved to town, he would go out to the farm to see how things were getting along.

Ray and Marge were honored for all the things they had done for their community by being chosen the Grand Marshalls of the Holiday Parade.

Ray is survived by Marjorie, his wife of almost 60 years; six children: Patricia (Thomas) Niess of Buffalo Center, IA, Colleen (Kenneth) Jarosh of Spillville, IA, Anne (Steve) Igel of Rochester, MN, William (Vicki) and Michael (Danelle), all of Cresco, and Joseph (Linda) of Healdsburg, CA; 16 grandchildren: Katie Jo Bruhn, Liz Niess, Amy Kelly, Brad and Mike Niess; Michael and Rebecca Jarosh; Chelsi Igel; Kelli Abrahamson, Maria Leitz, and Krisitian McGee; John, Jay and Jeremy McGee; Nicholas and Samantha McGee; one step grandchild: Eric Reinhart; 10 great-grandchildren: Brandon and Kevin Bruhn; Benjamin and Courtney Kelly; Evon Leitz; Katelyn, Sean, Brennan and Brianna McGee; Hunter McGee; three step great-grandchildren: Nathan Reinhart, Tyrone Grant and Annaka Holthaus; three sisters: Cecelia Delaney of Austin, MN, Rita Fleming of Stevensville, MT, and Marjorie Wetherell of Rock Island, IL; and one brother: John “Jack” McGee of Gilbertville, IA.

Ray was preceded in death by his parents; one daughter: Shirley in infancy; one son: James; one infant grandson; three brothers: Donald, Edward, and Gerald; and one sister: Marcella Mirci.

WHY LIFE WAS NEVER DULL!!

I would like to list some of the accomplishments in our 59 years of married life. We raised a wonderful, loving family who have brought us much joy and satisfaction over the years. They in turn gave us 17 grandchildren, without whom life would have never been this good.

I served a few terms as Director of the little country school, and was elected President on the Orleans school bus board. Later, served on the Assumption Catholic Church Council and on the Catholic School Board.

Did a lot of corresponding with the local Postmaster and the postal authorities in Washington, D.C. working to convince them we need our rural mail route changed so that eight neighboring families could receive mail at their door instead of driving up to a mile to their mailboxes.

It was interesting to serve on the United Shippers Cooperative Board of Directors. We attended Grain Dealer's Conventions in Des Moines and Land O'Lakes Conventions in Minneapolis. This was educational and also a lot of fun.

Our family was named FHA Family of the Year in 1972. For several years, I served as captain and committeeman of the Farm Bureau and attended meetings in Des Moines. My years as a 4-H Leader were rewarding in many ways, especially the life-long friendships we cultivated. And, a first for our school Sisters of Notre Dame - we organized a parish drive and presented the sisters with a new station wagon for their own use.

I am a charter member since 1947, and have a Life Membership in the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) organization, Post 4561, and in the Disabled American Veterans (DAV) organization, and am also a member of the Cresco American Legion Post #135. I am also a member of the Knights of Columbus since 1947 and am now an Honorary Lifetime Member. I am happy to be a member of the 348th Engineers, a group of army buddies.

I wrote a book, “Memories of My Participation in the Bloody Struggle to Defeat Hitler's Army”. This book has been copyrighted and published. We also compiled and published two volumes of “Our Veterans in War and Peace”. I served as a committeeman on a Writers' workshop in Decorah.

Money isn't always so important, but good friends and a good partner are very important. I feel my life has been happy and successful. You often hear it said, “There is a good woman behind every successful man.” How true that is - “Thanks again, Marge.”

Roger Carl Dietrich

CLARKSVILLE - Roger Carl Dietrich, 75, of Clarksville, Iowa, formerly of Waverly, Iowa and Ionia, Iowa, died on January 7, 2007, at the Community Nursing Home in Clarksville of natural causes.

Private family graveside services will be held on Friday at Harlington Cemetery in Waverly.

Roger was born on July 27, 1931, in Bremer County, Iowa, the son of Gus and Lily (Schrage) Dietrich. He attended school and graduated from Waverly High School in 1949. On November 10, 1950, he was united in marriage to Beverly Strotman at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Waverly. The couple began farming near Ionia until their retirement in 1994, when they began renting their land. In February of 1999, they sold the farm and moved to their home in Clarksville. Beverly passed away of cancer on April 11, 1999 and Roger has remained living at their home in Clarksville.

Survived by one brother, Ronald Dietrich of Wisconsin; one sister, Marlys Bergman of Colorado; and many nieces and nephews.

PROTIVIN - A Mass of Christian Burial for Julius J. Shileny of Protivin, IA was held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, January 8, 2007 at the Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Protivin with Rev. David M. Beckman officiating. Lector was Dennis Shileny, the gifts were carried by Eleanor Dostal, Norb Shileny and Mary Ann Kuennen. The Eucharist Ministers were Norb Shileny and Randy Kuennen, organist was Marlene Pecinovsky who accompanied the soloist Lacy Shileny. Pallbearers were: James Balik, David Mashek, Bill Prochaska, Sonny Kalishek Wayne Kreitzer, Bud Svoboda, Larry Svoboda, and John Svoboda. Interment was in Holy Trinity Cemetery in Protivin.

Julius, 79, died Friday, January 5, 2007 at Regional Health Services Hospital in Cresco.

Julius Joseph Shileny was born February 22, 1927 in Chickasaw County, the son of Joseph and Zephie (Bouska) Shileny. He received his education in the rural school near his home. Following his education, he stayed on the farm to help with the daily farming chores.

On January 27, 1948 he married Loretta Kacer in the Holy Trinity Church at Protivin. Uniting them in marriage was Rev. J.S. Skluzacek. They continued farming and were blessed with seven children. Julius and Loretta farmed northeast of Protivin over 40 years. They had dairy cattle, raised hogs, and complete crop farming. They moved into Protivin in 1981 and Julius continued helping on the farm until he retired in 1992.

Julius was a member of the Holy Trinity Church and the Knights of Columbus. He sold seed corn, drove school bus, measured ground for the ASCS and umpired many baseball games. Julius also managed the Protivin Merchants Fast Pitch Softball Team for over 20 years. He enjoyed all sports, was a St. Louis Cardinal fan, was a loyal fan of the Iowa Hawkeyes. He also enjoyed reading western novels and watching the old western movies. He enjoyed traveling and fishing, which one could say was his most enjoyable pastime. Most of all, Julius loved having his family visit, especially the grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife, Loretta; five children: Janice (Michael) Bronson of Cedar Rapids, IA, Dennis (Mary) Shileny of LaPorte City, IA, Gerald (Jodie) Shileny of Protivin, IA, Marilyn (Andy) Fliger of Protivin, IA, and Linda (Dan) Prentice of Spring Hill, FL; 11 grandchildren: Adam, Kristi, Julie and Daniel Shileny; Lacy Shileny; Lee Ann (John) Drilling and Thomas Shileny; Christopher and Kyle Ducker, and Tanner Bruns; and Lauren Prentice; two great-grandchildren: Annaleigh and Breydon; one brother: Norbert (Delores) Shileny of New Hampton, IA; and two sisters: Eleanor Dostal and Mary Ann Kuennen, both of Lawler, IA.

FERNDALE, WA - A memorial service for Dale A. Curtis of Ferndale, WA was held at 3:00 p.m. on Thursday, January 4, 2007 at Northwest Baptist Church in Bellingham, WA.

Dale, 54, died Saturday, December 23, 2006 at St. Joseph's Hospital in Bellingham, WA.

Dale Arthur Curtis was born September 18, 1952 in Cresco, IA, the son of Manuel Arthur and Lucille Gertrude (Fravel) Curtis. He was the oldest of five children. After graduating from Cresco High School in 1971, Dale joined the United States Navy. His first duty station was in Iceland and he retired in Oak Harbor on July 31, 1995.

On November 13, 1974 he married Darlene Hargis in Portsmouth, VA. They raised four children together.

From 1990 to 1995 Dale was stationed at NAS Whidbey Island, where he retired from active duty as Petty Officer First Class. He then went to work for B.F. Goodrich in Everett as an aircraft mechanic. He has worked there for the last 11 years.

Dale was an active member of Northwest Baptist Church and Forward Ministries. He enjoyed giving his grandchildren and the children at the church hay rides with his tractor. He also enjoyed going to his grandchildren's sporting events. He loved spending time in the nursery helping out with the babies. He loved to do extra activities for his church and church members. If anyone needed a helping hand he was always there.

He is survived by his children: Cheryl Woodson, James Curtis, Megan and Kevin Collins, and Joshua Curtis, all of Oak Harbor; 12 grandchildren: Andrew, Kayla, Jacob, Sheridan, Samantha, Braden, Ethan, Isabell, Brendin, Jayden, Lyric and Gabriel, all of Oak Harbor; brother Gene and Deb Curtis; and sister: Doreen and Mike Sattler, all of Iowa; brother: Ray and Mary Curtis of Minnesota; and sister Glenda and Joe Lacey also of Iowa; also three nephews and three nieces.

Dale was preceded in death by his parents; and one grandson: Jerico Curtis-Robbins in 1996.

NEW HAMPTON - Harlan Anderson, 72, of New Hampton, died Tuesday, January 9, 2007 at his home in New Hampton.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10:30 a.m. Friday, January 12 at Holy Family Parish-St. Joseph Center in New Hampton with Reverend Carl Schmitt celebrating the Mass. Chris Carrier will be the organist and will accompany the cantor, Joyce Shatek and the North Washington Men's Choir. Lector for the service will be Ray Klenske and presenting the offertory gifts will be Harlan's four granddaughters: Tierney Blinn, Kaleigh Blinn, Jordyn Johnston, and Alexandria Johnston. Eucharistic ministers will be Arnie Tierney, Georgia Tierney and James Carr. Placing the pall will be Harlan's wife, daughters, and granddaughters.

Burial will be in the Calvary Cemetery in New Hampton with John Rosonke, John Winter, Tom Britt, Ed Shekleton, Bill Weigel and Dale Wagoner serving as casket bearers.

Friends may call from 3:00 to 8:00 p.m. Thursday at Conway-Kolbet Funeral Home in New Hampton where there will be a 4:00 p.m. rosary and 7:00 p.m. Parish Scripture service. Visitation will also be an hour prior to services at the church.

Harlan Keith Anderson was born June 10, 1934, on a farm near Jerico, IA, the son of Alice Anderson Vaala Landswerk. He received his education at the Saude-Jerico Christian Day School. After finishing his schooling Harlan worked as a farmhand in the Jerico area until going to work for Midland Feeds which was later known as Land O'Lakes. On April 8, 1972, Harlan was united in marriage to Teresa Tierney at St. Joseph Catholic Church. The couple made their home in New Hampton until moving to North Washington in 1980. While in North Washington the couple operated Andy's Bar and Harlan also continued to work for Land O' Lakes. Later the couple moved back to New Hampton where they owned and operated Andy's Bar in New Hampton and Harlan began working for Hillandale Farms, where he remained until his retirement in 1993.

Harlan loved to take his granddaughters to the park, Polka music, playing cards and walking.

He was a member of the Holy Family Parish.

Survived by his wife of 34 years, Teresa; two daughters Wendy (Cameron) Blinn, Waterloo and Mindy (Jay) Johnston. Riceville; four granddaughters Tierney Blinn, Kaleigh Blinn, Jordyn Johnston, and Alexandria Johnston; a brother Jerry (Char) Vaala, Waterloo; a sister Connie (Jim) Bedard, Washburn; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law Francis (Janet) Franzen, Ossian, Arnie (Lois) Tierney, New Hampton, Betty (Gerald) Gleason, Waterloo, Tom (Judy) Tierney, New Hampton and Jim (Georgia) Tierney, Waterloo and numerous nieces and nephews.

FT. ATKINSON - A Mass of Christian Burial for Alois J. Shindelar of rural Fort Atkinson, IA was held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, January 5, 2007 at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Spillville with Rev. Donald Hawes and Father David Tickerhoof, TOR officiating. Lector was Sharon J. Samec, mass servers were: Matthew, Dominic and Joshua Samec. Organist was Doris Thompson and soloist was Dan Silhacek. St. Wenceslaus choir sang, “Here I Am, Lord”, “One Bread, One Body”, “Ave Maria”, “How Great Thou Art”. Eucharistic Ministers were Carrie Shindelar and Sharon M. Samec. Honorary pallbearers and gift bearers were his granddaughters: Ann Goza, Sharon J. Samec, Jennifer Weber, Kathryn Shindelar, Danielle Shindelar, and Sally Cline. Pallbearers were his grandsons: Steve Samec, Scott Samec, Stacy Franzen, Travis Franzen, Robert Shindelar, Bart Shindelar, and Joshua Shindelar. Interment was in St. Wenceslaus Catholic Cemetery in Spillville.

Alois, 92, died Tuesday, January 2, 2007 at the Ossian Senior Hospice in Ossian, IA.

Alois John Shindelar was born July 5, 1914, in Spillville, IA, the son of John and Anna (Kruchek) Shindelar. He attended St. Wenceslaus Catholic School.

On June 2, 1941, he married Blanche Rys at St. Paul's Church in Walnut Grove, MN. Alois farmed most of his life and also worked for the National Farmer's Organization for more than 10 years. He believed strongly in the farmer's right to unionize and price their own products. Almost to the day he died, he remained a passionate pro-life advocate.

Alois was an avid reader, enjoyed music, playing cards, participated in the Czech choir and was in many Czech plays. He especially enjoyed family activities. Alois was a lifetime member of St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church, the Holy Name Society and the First Czech Slovak Ladies Association (formerly the Catholic Workman).

Alois is survived by his three sons: Larry and Kay Shindelar of Ft. Atkinson, IA, Gary and Violet Shindelar of Sullivan, IL, and  Ronald Shindelar of Ft. Atkinson, IA; four daughters: Judy (Sister Miriam) of Marty, SD, Connie and Edmund Samec of Protivin, IA, Anita and Mike Preston of Ankeny, IA, and Karen and Ivan Franzen of Ossian, IA; 13 grandchildren: Ann (Terry) Goza, Bart (Carrie) Shindelar, Steve (Sharon M.) Samec, Sharon J. Samec, Scott Samec, Jennifer (Alan) Weber, Robert Shindelar, Kathryn Shindelar, Danielle Shindelar, Joshua Shindelar, Sally Cline, Stacy (Rebecca) Franzen and Travis (Cheryl) Franzen; nine great- grandchildren: Colton and Landon Goza, Adeline and Tanner Shindelar, Matthew, Dominic and Joshua Samec, Jax Weber and Lindsay Franzen; and three sisters-in-law: Beulah Shindelar, Evelyn Rys and Donna Rys.

NEW HAMPTON - Vincel B. Eslinger, 91, of New Hampton, died Monday, January 8, 2007 at the New Hampton Care Center in New Hampton.

Funeral services will be held 11:00 a.m. Friday, January 12, at the United Methodist Church in New Hampton with Reverend Marshall Monthei officiating. Charlotte Markle will be the organist and will accompany those in attendance singing “How Great Thou Art” and “Amazing Grace.”

Friends may call an hour prior to services at the church with Masonic Services beginning at 9:45 a.m.

Interment will be in the New Hampton Cemetery with Brian Eslinger, Curt Eslinger, Evon Kangrga and Brian Button serving as casket bearers.

Vincel Barfels Eslinger was born November 2, 1915 in Reinbeck, Grundy County, IA the son of John and Bertha (Barfels) Eslinger and graduated from Reinbeck High School in 1933. He was united in marriage to Hattie Glasner who passed away in 1981. Vincel farmed all of his life, farming in Grundy County until 1949 when they moved to Chickasaw County where he continued to farm until his retirement to New Hampton in 1976. Vincel was united in marriage to Amy Nyswander on May 14, 1982 at Leech Lake, MN. He continued to live in New Hampton until his death.

Vincel enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening and traveling to Florida in the winter months. He was a member of the United Methodist Church, the Masonic Lodge, and Farm Bureau.

Survived by his wife Amy; two children Larry (Karen) Eslinger, Grundy Center and Donald Eslinger, Waukon; four grandchildren, Curt, Brian, Laura, and Beth. He is also survived by five great-grandchildren.

Preceded in death by his parents, first wife Hattie, daughter-in-law Carole Eslinger and two brothers Jiles and Gilbert Eslinger.

CHARLES CITY - Norma Mae Kuker, 84, of Charles City, died Thursday, January 4, 2007, at the Mercy Medical Center-New Hampton.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Messiah Lutheran Church in Charles City. Pastor Alan Schulz will officiate.

Interment will be in Rose Hill Cemetery, Fredericksburg.

Norma Mae (Avery) Kuker was born August 14, 1922, the daughter of Earl and Cornalia (Lottmann) Avery in Butler County. She graduated from the Sumner high school in 1940. On February 21, 1941 she was united in marriage to Nelson Kuker at the Spring Fountain Church. For most of Norma's life she helped work on their farm. Norma was also employed at the egg factory in Sumner, candling eggs and the butter factory in Fredericksburg. She was a member of Messiah Lutheran Church, the church circle, a foster grandparent for three years, and the Am Vet Auxiliary, Fredericksburg Post #90. Her interests included craft work, stain glass window making, crocheting, golfing, fishing, gardening, canning, cooking, traveling, playing dominos and cards, reading the Bible and reminiscing about old times. Norma will always be remembered as a caring listener for family and friends.

Survived by a daughter, Karen Johnston, Ionia; two sons, Ronald (Fayne) Kuker, Dayton, OH, and Dennis (Debra) Kuker of Monticello; 10 grandchildren; many great grandchildren; and one brother, Lloyd Avery of Missouri.

Preceded in death by her parents; her husband on January 3, 1999; one son, Jerry Kuker in December of 1996; and one granddaughter, Chrisanne Miller in November of 2005.

NORMAN, OK - Ernest Francis Larkin, Ph.D., 71, of Norman, OK passed away quietly at home on Friday evening, Dec. 15, 2006, following a battle with cancer.

A commemorative celebration was held at Step Brother's, 423 S. Webster, in Norman, December 30, 2006, at 6:00 p.m.

Ernest was born July 17, 1935, in New Hampton, Iowa, to Ernest Leo (Bob) and Otilda Moravetz Larkin. Ernie received his BA, MA and Ph.D. in Journalism/Advertising and mass communications from the University of Iowa.

He and Karen Schaeferle of Gladbrook, Iowa, were married October 18, 1958, and he then went on to teach advertising and graduate courses at the University of Oklahoma for 24 years.

Dr. Larkin helped found the Oklahoma Newspaper Advertising Bureau and was twice elected head of the Advertising Division of the American Educators of Journalism/Mass Communications.

He also was elected national president of the American Academy of Advertising and served as Distinguished Visiting Professor of Advertising for the University of Florida College of Journalism.

Ernie married his second wife, Susan Schoebel of Lake Forest, IL on June 15, 1991, and together they continued their professional work as national coordinators of advertising training and development programs. Their largest achievement as a team was in developing the AAA/INAME Student Newspaper Advertising Competition, sponsored by the Newspaper Association of America Foundation.

Dr. Larkin authored the book Successful Newspaper Telemarketing, and co-authored with Susan Larkin College Newspaper Business and Advertising Manager's Handbook, which was distributed nationally to every college newspaper in the United States.

Ernie was passionate about history and photography, especially of the American West, so each summer Ernie and his family would travel the continental U.S. visiting historical sites and national parks.

Upon his retirement from the University of Oklahoma in 1995, Ernie spent large portions of the year in Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks photographing the scenery and wildlife.

His hometown of New Hampton always held a special place in his heart, and Ernie dedicated much time to compiling its history and sketching many of its historic buildings.

Survived by his mother, Tillie Larkin, 98, of New Hampton; his three children Lynnette Larkin McNully, Lancaster, TX, Lance Ernest Larkin and Lisa Larkin (Jeff) Melton, all of Norman; five grandchildren, Bronwyn and Rachel McNully of Lancaster, Sydney Melton, and Katherine Elizabeth and Jared Alexander Ernest Larkin, all of Norman; as well as Karen Schaeferle Larkin of Norman and Susan Schoebel Larkin of Milwaukee, Wis. He is also survived by his sister Norma (Ralph) Hartsock, Green Valley, AZ and their children Chris, Susan and Ward.

Preceded in death by his father Bob in December of 2001.

GRAND JUNCTION, CO - Brian Brannon, 62, Grand Junction, CO, died Thursday, December 28, 2006 at his home of a seizure disorder.

A Memorial Service was held January 2 in Grand Junction.

Burial of ashes is planned for a later date at Calvary Cemetery, New Hampton.

Brian was born March 5, 1944 in New Hampton, the son of Raymond and Andrea Brannon. He spent his childhood in New Hampton, where he also graduated from high school. Following graduation he attended Loras College in Dubuque and received his undergraduate degree from the University of Iowa in 1966. Brian served as an Army Platoon leader in Vietnam from 1966 to 1968 and was awarded the Bronze Star and the Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross. In 1973 Brian received his J. D. from the University of Iowa.

He was a resident of Grand Junction for 28 years, where he retired as a Trust Officer and Attorney. He was married to Jody Briner. They divorced in 1997. Brian was a member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church and volunteered for many years at the Grand Valley Catholic Outreach soup kitchen. He was a member of the Grand Junction Rotary Club for 21 years and was a Paul Harris Fellow. His other interests included listening to classical music, researching Epilepsy Neuroscience and reading books on history and philosophy.

Survivors include a son, Douglas and daughter, Shannon, both of San Francisco, CA; mother, Andrea Y. Brannon, Cedar Falls; sisters, Maryellen Carr (William), Rochester, MN, Audrey Sweitzer (Raymond), Cedar Falls and Alissa Wilke (Joseph), Springboro, OH; several nieces and nephews.

Preceding him in death was his father, Raymond P. Brannon.

Memorials may be made to a charitable organization of the donor's choice.

CALMAR - Margaret R. “Marge” Cutsforth, age 84, of Calmar, IA, died on Wednesday, January 10, 2007, at the Winneshiek Medical Center in Decorah, Iowa, following a lingering illness.

Mass of Christian Burial was held at St. Aloysius Catholic Church in Calmar at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, January 13 with the Rev. Donald Hawes officiating. Alan Sensor was the organist and accompanied the St. Aloysius Choir singing “Be Not Afraid”, “On Eagle's Wings”, “Precious Lord, Take My Hand”, and “How Great Thou Art”. “I Can Only Imagine” was also played on CD. The Lectors were Phyllis Cutsforth and Bettie Lechtenberg and Eucharistic Ministers were Jim and Phyllis Cutsforth. Shelley Whitehill, Heather Engelhardt and Kathy Cutsforth served as Offertory Gift Bearers. Interment was in St. Aloysius Catholic Cemetery

in Calmar. Scott Cutsforth, Brian Cutsforth, Pat Cutsforth, Sean Cutsforth, Todd Lechtenberg and Scott Engelhardt were Casketbearers.

Margaret Rosemarie “Marge” (Hruska) Cutsforth was born on January 10, 1923, the daughter of William and Vlasta (Vavrock) Hruska near Lawler, Iowa. Marge attended country school near Lawler and helped work on her family's farm. She married James H. Cutsforth on August 29, 1945 at Riley Ridge Catholic Church north of Lawler. They lived near Lawler for a short time, before moving to Calmar in 1946. Marge worked at Bucheit Produce for 20 years and then at Graphics as a bookkeeper, retiring in 1988. Marge dearly loved her grandchildren and great-grandchildren and did anything she could for them. Marge enjoyed sewing, gardening, fishing and traveling with her husband, Jim. Marge was a member of St. Aloysius Catholic Church and was a sixty-year member of the Halverson - Giesen American Legion Ladies Auxiliary in Calmar.

Survived by her husband, James “Jim” Cutsforth, Calmar; four children, Jim (Phyllis) Cutsforth, Ottumwa, Terry (Bonnie) Brandenburg, Fredericksburg, Sheila (Dennis) Koepp, Decorah, and Sandy (Lyle) Lechtenberg, Houston, MN; Eight grandchildren, Kathy Cutsforth, Brian (Keitha) Cutsforth, Scott Cutsforth, Shelley (Harry) Wahl, Whitehill, Heather (Scott) Engelhardt, Patrick (Shannon) Bartholomew Cutsforth, Todd (Bettie) Lechtenberg and Sean Cutsforth. Bill was born May 21, 1942 in Cresco, IA, the son of John “Bud” and Phyllis Mullen. He graduated from Notre Dame High School and Winona State University.

He is survived by his wife, Sue (Donovan); children: Amy and Ryan; grandchildren: Donovan, Maykayla, and Rieley; his mother: Phyllis Mullen; brothers: John (Gilda) and Tom of Cresco; sisters: Pat (Jack) Ferrie, Mary (Tom) Kleve of Cresco, Peggy Mullen of Robbinsdale, MN, Colleen (Dale) Ladwig of Plymouth, MN, and Barbara (Harry) Weflen of Oakdale, MN.
