Alvin Franzen

Funeral services for Alvin C. Franzen were held 11:00 a.m. Monday, June 4, at St. Benedict's Catholic Church with the Rev. Gary Krapfl officiating.

Interment was in the St. Benedict's Church Cemetery in Decorah. French and Balik Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Alvin, 76, died Friday, June 1, 2001 at his daughter's home following a lengthy illness.

He is survived by his wife, Carol of Decorah; two daughters: Polly Lasley of Decorah and Kim Weber of Cedar Falls; two sons: David Stoen of Fort Benning, GA and Anthony Franzen at home; nine grandchildren; one brother: Eligius "Sam" of Fort Atkinson; and seven sisters: Dorothy Moellers of Fort Atkinson, Alvina Zook of Sioux City, Lou Schuller of Waterloo, Kathy Gorby of Waterloo, Eileen Hill of Cedar Falls, Marilyn Bedard of Waterloo and Jane Jones of Leon.


Al Hemesath

Funeral services for Al Hemesath were held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, June 4, at the Assumption Worship Center with interment in Calvary Cemetery, both at Cresco. The Rev. Henry W. Charipar officiated. Pallbearers were nephews: Gary, Todd, and Cliff Hemesath, Larry and Wayne Huinker, and Gary Elsbernd. Conway Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Al, 78, died Friday, June 1, 2001 at St. Mary’s Hospital in Rochester, MN after a week’s stay.

Alphonse John Hemesath was born August 17, 1922 near Ossian, the son of Henry and Alvina (Scheidel) Hemesath. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Francis DeSales Catholic Church, attended DeSales School in Ossian and returned to help on the family farm. Prior to his marriage, he helped his brother operate the roller skating rink in Ossian and enjoyed flying an airplane.

On May 20, 1947 he married DeEtta Huinker at St. Aloysius Catholic Church in Calmar. Following their marriage they farmed northwest of Cresco on three different farms for eight years before purchasing their home farm three miles west of Ridgeway in Lincoln Township. In 1985, they moved to a farm in Bluffton Township where they discontinued milking and raised beef cattle. He retired in December of 1999 because of ill health. In the year 2000, they took a cruise.

Al enjoyed farming; was his own mechanic and carpenter, and enjoyed training horses.

He is survived by his wife DeEtta; four daughters: Mary Jeanne Hemesath of West St. Paul, MN, Marcia Grimm of Knoxville, Maxine Humpal of Ridgeway, Donna Baumler of West Union; two sons: Mark of Ridgeway and Matthew also of Ridgeway; ten grandchildren; three brothers: Henry of Monona, Arthur and Elmer both of Ossian; and one sister: Doris Huber of Reno, NV.

Al was preceded in death by his parents; and one brother, Joseph.


E. Blazek

 Funeral services for Eleonora (Zbornik) Blazek of Lawler will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, June 8, at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church in Lawler with the Rev. Marvin Salz officiating. Interment will be in Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church Cemetery in Lawler. Pallbearers will be: Jeff Lowe, Brian Blazek, Stephen Zbornik, James Zbornik, Don Blazek, Jr., and Gene Blazek. Hugeback Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.

Eleonora, 93, died Saturday, June 2, 2001 at the New Hampton Nursing and Rehabilitation Center of natural causes.

Eleonora Blazek was born February 20, 1908 in Cresco, the daughter of Joseph F. and Eleonora (Ptacek) Blazek. She attended St. Joseph Grade School in Cresco and was a 1926 graduate of Assumption High School. After graduation, she attended St. Mary’s College in Milwaukee for four years. Eleonora began teaching in 1934 in a Howard County Country School and also in elementary education in Charles City. In 1940, she taught at the Mallard High School in Mallard. From 1941-1943 she worked as a teacher and principal at the Ft. Atkinson High School and later taught in the Riceville High School.

On May 24, 1945 she married Edward Leonard Blazek at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Cresco. They farmed three miles north of Lawler. While living in Lawler, she did substitute teaching in Lawler and taught middle school Language Arts in 1968 and 1969 at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic School.

Memberships include: Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church and Rosary Society where she was very active, the Catholic Daughters of America and was an active 4-H Leader with the Lawler Lively Lassies for nearly 20 years.

Eleonora enjoyed gardening, sewing, crocheting, the Iowa Hawkeyes, and traveling with her husband.

She is survived by three sons: Bob of Winter Park, CO, Dick of Iowa City, and Bill of Richland; one daughter: Jane Blazek of Madison, WI; three grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and one sister: Ada Zbornik of Highland, CA.

Eleonora was preceded in death by her husband Edward on April 22, 1996; her step-mother: Nettie Zbornik; her parents; and four brothers: Joseph V. Zbornik, Bernard Schneider, Ray Zbornik and Arnold Zbornik.


John Bouska

Funeral services for John Bouska of LaCrosse, WI, formerly of rural Ft. Atkinson, were held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, June 30, at the Holy Trinity Catholic Church with interment in Holy Trinity Cemetery, both in Protivin.

The Rev. Donald Hawes officiated. Honorary pallbearers were all John's friends. Balik Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

John, 35, died on Wednesday, June 13, 2001 at his home in LaCrosse, WI.

John Clarence Bouska was born March 1, 1966 at the hospital in Decorah, the son of Francis and Pauline (Frana) Bouska. John attended Holy Trinity School in Protivin and graduated from South Winneshiek High School. He farmed with his father and brothers until about a year ago when he moved to LaCrosse.

He is survived by his father Francis of Cresco; five brothers: Francis of Freeport, Quentin of Minneapolis, MN, George of New Hampton, Joseph and Jerry both of Ft. Atkinson; and four sisters: Kathleen Meyer of Waterloo, Anita Hemesath of Ossian, Pauline Haskovec of Cresco, and LaDeane Lensing also of Cresco.

John was preceded in death by his mother Pauline on June 4, 2001; and a brother, Dale in 1984.


Edward Voves

Funeral services for Edward Voves were held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, June 8, at the Conway Funeral Home in Cresco with interment in the Saratoga Cemetery.

Edward, 91, died Tuesday, June 5, 2001 at the Cresco Care Center in Cresco.

Edward Voves was born on May 15, 1910, in Howard County, the son of James and Frances (Roman) Voves. He attended rural schools. He was involved in farming with his brothers in the Howard Center area.

He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and was an avid trapper.

Edward was preceded in death by one sister: Stella Breitsprecher-Smith; and three brothers: William, George, and Joseph.


Charles Welch

Memorial services for Charles Welch were held at 2:30 p.m. on Monday, June 18, at the Evans Memorial Home Chapel in Cresco. Conway Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Charles, 80, died Monday, June 11, 2001 at the Evans Memorial Home in Cresco where he had been a resident since May 5, 2001.

Charles William Welch was born July 12, 1920 in Des Moines, the son of Edwin and Helen (Gooch) Welch. He attended school in Des Moines graduating from North High School in 1938.

On August 16, 1941 he married JoAnn West in Des Moines. He served in the U.S. Coast Guard from 1942 until 1946. In 1954 he joined the Des Moines Police Department attaining the rank of detective, retiring in 1969.

Following his retirement, he moved to Alabama. They then moved to Florida where JoAnn died, and following her death, he moved to Cresco to be near his daughter.

Charles enjoyed fishing and playing golf.

He is survived by his children: Carolyn “Charlie” Reeves of Cresco, Glenn of Opelika, AL, and Creszenz Hamand of West Des Moines; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren; and two brothers: Edwin of California and Jack of Texas.

Charles was preceded in death by his wife JoAnn in 1995; an infant daughter; his parents; one brother: Robin; and one sister: Carol Welch.


Louis Koudelka

Funeral services for Louis Koudelka of Cresco were held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, June 9, at the Holy Trinity Catholic Church with interment in the church cemetery, both in Protivin. Rev. John Moser officiated. Pallbearers were grandchildren and nephews: Jeff Koudelka, Angie Koudelka, Nicole Rosenbaum, Chuck Hadacek, Randy Koshatka, Michelle Foltz, James Barloon, and Roger Ott. Conway Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Louis, 75, died Thursday, June 7, 2001 at Regional Health Services Hospital of Howard County in Cresco.

Louis Francis Koudelka was born July 31, 1925 in Winneshiek County, near Protivin, the son of Frank J. and Lydia (Barloon) Koudelka. Louis attended rural school and farmed his whole life.

On June 7, 1948 he married Hermina Ott at St. Luke’s Catholic church of St. Lucas.

He was a member of the Holy Trinity Church and a member of the Catholic Workman. He enjoyed woodworking and doing crafts.

He is survived by his wife Hermina; two daughters: Linda Koshatka and Lori Stapelkamp both of Cresco; one son: Donald of Protivin; ten grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; two step grandchildren; and two sisters: Clara Panos and Alice Pechota both of Protivin


Martin Boeke

Funeral services for Martin Boeke were held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, June 14, at the First Lutheran church with interment in Oak Lawn Cemetery, both at Cresco. The Rev. Gary K. Lee and Intern Gail Hermodson officiated. Pallbearers were: Jeff Boeke, D.C. Randle, Gregg Boeke, Ed Squires, Samuel Boeke, Scott Boeke, Michael Boeke, and Charlie Boeke. Lindstrom Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Martin, 90, died Monday, June 11, 2001 at the Regional Health Services of Howard County.

Martin M. Boeke was born September 20, 1910 in Hubbard to H.S. and Lizzie Boeke. He was baptized and confirmed in the Evangelical and Reformed Church and attended school in Hubbard. He enrolled in the College of Pharmacy at the University of Iowa, graduated in 1930, and was licensed as a registered pharmacist.

On July 3, 1932 he married Margaret Sater.

His professional life centered on his practice of pharmacy. He first spent a few months in Illinois, being “too young” to practice in Iowa, then five years in Steamboat Rock. In 1932 he purchased the Boeke Drug Store in Wellsburg and operated this business until 1964 when he moved to Cresco to work with his son in the Boeke Pharmacy. He gradually retired but held his license and did part-time work until he was 88 years old.

Martin lived an active and involved life in his profession, his community, and his church.

Martin served in many offices and as president of the Iowa Pharmacists’ Association in 1965. He was also a lifetime president emeritus of the Iowa Veteran Druggists Association. He is especially remembered for the memorial services he conducted for deceased pharmacists at the annual conventions. He was active in the Wellsburg Community Club, the Fire Department, the Boy Scouts, and worked to maintain health care services to their town. He continued this community involvement in Cresco. He served on the Board of Directors of the Evans Memorial Home, the Public Health Advisory Committee, the scheduler for the Escort Service at the Regional Hospital, and, at 90 years, was on the call committee for the Cresco Chamber of Commerce.

He is survived by one son: Gary; many grandchildren; and great-grandchildren.

Martin was preceded in death by his wife Marge; his parents; three brothers: Elmer, Art, and Oscar and one sister: Ruth.


Pauline Bouska

Funeral services for Pauline Bouska of Protivin were held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, June 7, at Holy Trinity Catholic Church with interment in Holy Trinity Cemetery both in Protivin.

The Rev. John Moser and Rev. Clarence Frana officiated. Pallbearers were grandsons: Brad Lensing, Luke Bouska, Terry Bouska, Jeremiah Bouska, Charles Meyer Jr., Jason Bouska, Lance Bouska, Liberty Bouska, Dexter Lensing, Tyler Hemesath, and Kristopher Haskovec. Balik Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Pauline, 79, died Monday, June 4, 2001 at Gundersen Lutheran Hospital in LaCrosse, WI.

Pauline Emma Bouska was born May 29, 1922 the daughter of Joseph and Anna (Humpal) Frana on a farm near Spillville. She attended St. Wenceslaus School.

On June 2, 1941 she married Francis Bouska at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Spillville. They farmed near Protivin and moved into Protivin in 1999.

Pauline loved to shop, dance to polka music, travel, take pictures, and garden. She was a member of Holy Trinity church, the Czech Choir, and the Rosary Society.

She is survived by her husband Francis of Cresco; six sons: Francis Jr. of Freeport, George of New Hampton, Quentin of Minneapolis, MN, Joseph of Ft. Atkinson, Jerry also of Ft. Atkinson, and John of LaCrosse, WI; four daughters: Kathleen Meyer of Waterloo, Anita Hemesath of Ossian, Pauline Haskovec of Cresco, and LaDeane Lensing also of Cresco; 32 grandchildren; and 21 great-grandchildren.

Pauline was preceded in death by one son: James in 1984; four grandchildren; her parents; three brothers: Adolph, Joseph and Martin; and six sisters: Mary Snyder, Antonia Hrdlicka, Bozena Koudelka, Adeline Berest, Emma Petrick and Lydia Ann in infancy.


Julius Sattler

Funeral services for Julius G. Sattler of Cedar Rapids formerly of Ft. Atkinson were held at St. Jude Catholic Church on June 5. Interment was in St. John’s Cemetery in Cedar Rapids.

Julius, 95, died Saturday, June 2, 2001 in Cedar Rapids.

Julius was born February 5, 1906 in Ft. Atkinson.

He married Clara Kalishek. Julius operated a grocery store in Protivin in the 1930s. In 1943 he and his family moved to Cedar Rapids where he worked at Wilson’s Meat packing Plant until 1949. In 1950 he went into the construction business of building houses from which he retired in 1968. A son Alvin who worked with him took over the business and Julius’ grandsons are now operating the business.

He is survived by one son: Alvin; one daughter: Shirley; and grandchildren.

Julius was preceded in death by his wife Clara; his parents; and several sisters and brothers.


Grace Rains

Funeral services for Grace Rains of Clinton were held at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, June 5, at the Nelson Heesch Funeral Home in Clinton with the Rev. Herb Shafer officiating.

Interment was in the Clinton Lawn Cemetery.

Grace, 89, died Sunday, June 3, 2001 at the Sterling House in Clinton.

Grace L. Rains was born September 23, 1911 in Ridgeway, the daughter of Charles and Florence (Hornberger) Kuntz.

On June 6, 1949 she married Carter C. Rains at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. He died January 25, 1991.

She graduated from the University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls and did graduate work at the University of Northern Illinois. She taught math at Washington Junior High School in Clinton.

She was a member of the First United Methodist Church where she was active in the Women's Circle.

She is survived by one sister: Alice Reinhart of Cresco.

Marie Ryan

Funeral services for Marie H. Ryan were held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, June 6, at Nativity Catholic Church in Harmony, MN with interment in State Line Cemetery, Harmony. The Rev. Steve Peterson officiated. Pallbearers were: Joe Ryan, Don Lewis, Mark Ryan, Ryan Lewis, Matthew Ryan, and Michael Broadwater. Lindstrom Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Marie, 84, died Sunday, June 3, 2001 at the Regional Health Services of Howard County.

Marie H. Ryan was born May 7, 1917 in Fremont Township, Winneshiek County, the daughter of Ole O. and Sophia (Kyseth) Pederson.

On March 4, 1946 she married Donald W. Ryan at Canton, MN and they farmed until their retirement.

She is survived by two sons: David of Stewartville, MN and John of Harmony; two daughters: Carol Lewis of Cresco and Joan Broadwater of Winona, MN; 12 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Marie was preceded in death by her husband Donald on March 10, 1978 and her brothers and sisters: Carl, Selmer, Martin, Oliver, Bennie, Albert, Merlin, Ruth Scrabeck, Louise Austenson, Wilma Anderson, and Selma Jacobson.

Judith Kalishek

Graveside services for Judith (Otting) Kalishek of Plano, TX, formerly of Cascade were held on Friday, May 25 at Mount Calvary Cemetery at Cascade.

Judith, 61, died Saturday, May 19, 2001 at the Plano Medical Center after a brief illness.

She is survived by one son: Tim of Round Rock, TX; one daughter: Jenny McCalip of San Antonio, TX; her mother: Mildred Otting of Cascade; one brother: Tim of Cascade; and three sisters: Kathy Barden of Cascade, Ruth Ann Gjerde of Albany, CA, and Vicki Kelchen of Cascade.

Judith was preceded in death by her father: Herbert; and a brother, Kenneth.

Mary Halsted

Funeral services for Mary Halsted were held at 2:00 p.m. Monday, June 11, at the United Methodist Church with interment in Oak Lawn Cemetery, both in Cresco.

The Rev. Lewis Flanigan officiated. Conway Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Mary, 88, died Thursday, June 7, 2001 at the Regional Health Services Hospital in Cresco.

Mary Catherine Halsted was born December 11, 1912 in Oelwein, Fayette County, the youngest daughter of Everett and Katherine (Tobin) Bogert. Shortly after Mary's birth, the family moved to Springfield, MA residing there until 1920, after the death of both her mother and later the death of a step mother.

The family came back to Iowa and settled in Fayette, where Mary grew to womanhood. She graduated from Fayette High School in 1932 and attended one semester of art at Upper Iowa University.

In 1936, she married George R. Halsted of Arlington at the home of her parents. The family moved to Cresco in April of 1940 where George entered the barber trade.

She was a member of the United Methodist Church, Twentieth Century Club, Cresco Garden Club, a charter member of the A to Z Sewing Club and a life member of the Hospital Auxiliary. As the girls were growing up, she worked with the Camp Fire Girls Club program.

She is survived by two daughters: Leatrice Corcoran of Austin, MN and Mary Ellen Boger of Lynchburg, VA; six grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren, and two great great grandchildren.

Mary was preceded in death by her husband George on April 16, 1990; one great-granddaughter; her parents; one brother: Everett Bogert; and three sisters: Bea Aulwes, Harriet Sterk and Edna Frommelt.


Joseph Prochaska

Funeral services for Joseph Prochaska of Protivin were held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, June 16, at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Protivin with Rev. John Moser officiating.

Interment was in Holy Trinity Cemetery with the Protivin Fire Department serving as active and honorary pallbearers. Hugeback Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Joseph, 88, died Wednesday, June 13, 2001 at the Evans Memorial Home in Cresco of natural causes.

Joseph R. Prohaska was born June 13, 1913 southwest of Protivin in rural Chickasaw County, the son of Joseph J. and Mayme (Fisher) Prochaska. He attended school in Protivin and graduated high school in the class of 1932.

On June 8, 1936 he married Wilma Kalishek at the Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Protivin. He was a well known northeast Iowa businessman for over 60 years, operating a restaurant and tavern in Protivin. Joe was the Protivin Fire Chief for 25 years, and had been the leader of the town band where he played the trumpet. Recently he and Wilma celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary. He was a lifelong member of the Catholic Workman, a member of the Knights of Columbus for over 50 years and the Holy Trinity Catholic Church.

He is survived by his wife Wilma; one daughter: Mary Prochaska-Richardson of Cedar Rapids; two sons: Bill of Fayette and Jim of Dubuque; seven grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and two sisters: Alice Mikesh of Hopkins, MN and Marie Henry of Minnetonka, MN.

Joseph was preceded in death by one daughter: Jane Prochaska-Haines; his parents; and one brother: Clarence.


Christine Kemna

Funeral services for Chrisine "Chris" Carolan Kemna of Algona, formerly of Decorah, will be held at 1:00 p.m. today, Wednesday, June 20 at St. Benedict's Catholic Church in Decorah.

Rev. Gary Krapfl will officiate. French and Balik Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.

Christina, 33, died Sunday, June 17, 2001 at Fairview Medical Center, Minneapolis, MN following a lenghty illness.


Marie Ryan

Funeral services for Marie H. Ryan were held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, June 6, at Nativity Catholic Church in Harmony, MN with interment in State Line Cemetery, Harmony.

The Rev. Steve Peterson officiated. Pallbearers were: Joe Ryan, Don Lewis, Mark Ryan, Ryan Lewis, Matthew Ryan, and Michael Broadwater. Lindstrom Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Marie, 84, died Sunday, June 3, 2001 at the Regional Health Services of Howard County.

Marie H. Ryan was born May 7, 1917 in Fremont Township, Winneshiek County, the daughter of Ole O. and Sophia (Kyseth) Pederson.

On March 4, 1946 she married Donald W. Ryan at Canton, MN and they farmed until their retirement.

She is survived by two sons: David of Stewartville, MN and John of Harmony; two daughters: Carol Lewis of Cresco and Joan Broadwater of Winona, MN; 12 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Marie was preceded in death by her husband Donald on March 10, 1978 and her brothers and sisters: Carl, Selmer, Martin, Oliver, Bennie, Albert, Merlin, Ruth Scrabeck, Louise Austenson, Wilma Anderson, and Selma Jacobson.


Charles Welch

Memorial services for Charles Welch were held at 2:30 p.m. on Monday, June 18, at the Evans Memorial Home Chapel in Cresco.

Conway Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Charles, 80, died Monday, June 11, 2001 at the Evans Memorial Home in Cresco where he had been a resident since May 5, 2001.

Charles William Welch was born July 12, 1920 in Des Moines, the son of Edwin and Helen (Gooch) Welch. He attended school in Des Moines graduating from North High School in 1938.

On August 16, 1941 he married JoAnn West in Des Moines. He served in the U.S. Coast Guard from 1942 until 1946. In 1954 he joined the Des Moines Police Department attaining the rank of detective, retiring in 1969.

Following his retirement, he moved to Alabama. They then moved to Florida where JoAnn died, and following her death, he moved to Cresco to be near his daughter.

Charles enjoyed fishing and playing golf.

He is survived by his children: Carolyn "Charlie" Reeves of Cresco, Glenn of Opelika, AL, and Creszenz Hamand of West Des Moines; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren; and two brothers: Edwin of California and Jack of Texas.

Charles was preceded in death by his wife JoAnn in 1995; an infant daughter; his parents; one brother: Robin; and one sister: Carol Welch.


Cornelius Huinker

Funeral services for Cornelius G. "Neil" Huinker of Festina were held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, June 8, at Our Lady of Seven Dolors with interment in Our Lady of Seven Dolors Cemetery both in Festina.

The Msgr. Cletus Hawes officiated. French Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Cornelius, 81, died Tuesday, June 5, 2001 at the Oneota Riverview Care Facility, Decorah, following a lengthy illness.

He is survived by three sisters: Bernice Buchheit of Festina, Ethel Luzum of Calmar, and Geneva Kuennen of St. Lucas; and two brothers: Donald of Ossian and Bob of Calmar.

Cornelius was preceded in death by his parents; one sister: Margie Huber; and two brothers: Virgil and Gerald.


Robert Hazlett

Funeral services for Robert Hazlett of Vacaville, CA were held at 10:00 a.m. Thursday, June 7, at the Nadeau Family Funeral Home in Vacaville with the Rev. Duane Robinson, a nephew, officiating.

Interment was in Vacaville-Elmira Cemetery.

Robert, 72, died Monday, June 4, 2001 in his Vacaville home after a short illness.

Robert L. Hazlett was born October 26, 1927 in Riceville. He attended John Sweatt High School in his younger years.

Robert had been a Pipe Insulator for 40 years with the Insulator and Asbestos Industry of Northern California, #16.

He was a member of the S.H.A.R.E. program in Vacaville and was a third Degree Master Mason in the F. & A.M., Hiram Tahoe Lodge, #43 in Eldorado, CA. He formerly resided in South Lake Tahoe for ten years as well as Rodeo, CA for 35 years.

He is survived by two daughters: Jane Hazlett and Susan Hazlett both of Vacaville; two grandchildren; and one sister: Ellen Benone of Pinole, CA.

Robert was preceded in death by his wife Lucille in 1999.


Pauline Bouska

Funeral services for Pauline Bouska of Protivin were held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, June 7, at Holy Trinity Catholic Church with interment in Holy Trinity Cemetery both in Protivin. The Rev. John Moser and Rev. Clarence Frana officiated. Pallbearers were grandsons: Brad Lensing, Luke Bouska, Terry Bouska, Jeremiah Bouska, Charles Meyer Jr., Jason Bouska, Lance Bouska, Liberty Bouska, Dexter Lensing, Tyler Hemesath, and Kristopher Haskovec. Balik Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Pauline, 79, died Monday, June 4, 2001 at Gundersen Lutheran Hospital in LaCrosse, WI.

Pauline Emma Bouska was born May 29, 1922 the daughter of Joseph and Anna (Humpal) Frana on a farm near Spillville. She attended St. Wenceslaus School.

On June 2, 1941 she married Francis Bouska at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Spillville. They farmed near Protivin and moved into Protivin in 1999.

Pauline loved to shop, dance to polka music, travel, take pictures, and garden. She was a member of Holy Trinity church, the Czech Choir, and the Rosary Society.

She is survived by her husband Francis of Cresco; six sons: Francis Jr. of Freeport, George of New Hampton, Quentin of Minneapolis, MN, Joseph of Ft. Atkinson, Jerry also of Ft. Atkinson, and John of LaCrosse, WI; four daughters: Kathleen Meyer of Waterloo, Anita Hemesath of Ossian, Pauline Haskovec of Cresco, and LaDeane Lensing also of Cresco; 32 grandchildren; and 21 great-grandchildren.

Pauline was preceded in death by one son: James in 1984; four grandchildren; her parents; three brothers: Adolph, Joseph and Martin; and six sisters: Mary Snyder, Antonia Hrdlicka, Bozena Koudelka, Adeline Berest, Emma Petrick and Lydia Ann in infancy.


Cornelius Huinker

Mary Halsted

Funeral services for Mary Halsted were held at 2:00 p.m. Monday, June 11, at the United Methodist Church with interment in Oak Lawn Cemetery, both in Cresco. The Rev. Lewis Flanigan officiated. Conway Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Mary, 88, died Thursday, June 7, 2001 at the Regional Health Services Hospital in Cresco.

Mary Catherine Halsted was born December 11, 1912 in Oelwein, Fayette County, the youngest daughter of Everett and Katherine (Tobin) Bogert. Shortly after Mary’s birth, the family moved to Springfield, MA residing there until 1920, after the death of both her mother and later the death of a step mother.

The family came back to Iowa and settled in Fayette, where Mary grew to womanhood. She graduated from Fayette High School in 1932 and attended one semester of art at Upper Iowa University.

In 1936, she married George R. Halsted of Arlington at the home of her parents. The family moved to Cresco in April of 1940 where George entered the barber trade.

She was a member of the United Methodist Church, Twentieth Century Club, Cresco Garden Club, a charter member of the A to Z Sewing Club and a life member of the Hospital Auxiliary. As the girls were growing up, she worked with the Camp Fire Girls Club program.

She is survived by two daughters: Leatrice Corcoran of Austin, MN and Mary Ellen Boger of Lynchburg, VA; six grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren, and two great great grandchildren.

Mary was preceded in death by her husband George on April 16, 1990; one great-granddaughter; her parents; one brother: Everett Bogert; and three sisters: Bea Aulwes, Harriet Sterk and Edna Frommelt.


John Bouska

Funeral services for John Bouska of LaCrosse, WI, formerly of rural Ft. Atkinson, were held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, June 30, at the Holy Trinity Catholic Church with interment in Holy Trinity Cemetery, both in Protivin. The Rev. Donald Hawes officiated. Honorary pallbearers were all John’s friends. Balik Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

John, 35, died on Wednesday, June 13, 2001 at his home in LaCrosse, WI.

John Clarence Bouska was born March 1, 1966 at the hospital in Decorah, the son of Francis and Pauline (Frana) Bouska. John attended Holy Trinity School in Protivin and graduated from South Winneshiek High School. He farmed with his father and brothers until about a year ago when he moved to LaCrosse.

He is survived by his father Francis of Cresco; five brothers: Francis of Freeport, Quentin of Minneapolis, MN, George of New Hampton, Joseph and Jerry both of Ft. Atkinson; and four sisters: Kathleen Meyer of Waterloo, Anita Hemesath of Ossian, Pauline Haskovec of Cresco, and LaDeane Lensing also of Cresco.

John was preceded in death by his mother Pauline on June 4, 2001; and a brother, Dale in 1984.


Helen Shipton

Graveside services for Helen Shipton of Fort Collins, CO, formerly of Calmar, were held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, June 23, at the Calmar Lutheran Cemetery, Calmar. The Rev. Cindy Arndt officiated. The body has been cremated.

Helen, 97, died Sunday, June 17, 2001 in Fort Collins, CO after a long illness.

She is survived by one daughter: Judy Flatley of Fort Collins, CO.


Allen Carolan

Memorial services for Allen “Butch” Carolan of Decorah were held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, June 23, at the French and Balik Funeral Home. The Rev. Gary Krapfl of St. Benedict’s Catholic Church officiated. Honorary pallbearers were all his good friends. Inurnment will be in the Bluffton Cemetery at a later date.

Allen, 58, died Wednesday, June 20, 2001 at the Veteran’s Hospital in Tomah, WI following a lengthy illness.

Allen Jerome Carolan was born August 8, 1942 in Decorah, the son of John and Julia (Broghammer) Carolan. Allen attended Decorah schools, graduating in 1960. He served in the United States Army from 1960-63 in Germany. He returned to Decorah and was the longtime manager of the Liquor Store in Decorah until the mid 1980s. He also ran Eddie’s Shoe Repair and the Water Street Laundromat until June 1999. Allen then entered the Veteran’s Assistance program in Tomah, WI due to his declining health.

He was an avid gun enthusiast and enjoyed reading history.

He is survived by two sons: Brian of Bluffton and Dirk of Nashville, TN; three granddaughters; and three brothers: Adrian of Birmingham, AL, Clair of Fort Atkinson, and Daniel of Elgin, IL.

Allen was preceded in death by his parents.


Marjorie Engbretson

Funeral services for Marjorie Engbretson of Decorah were held at 2:00 p.m. Friday, June 29, at Madison Lutheran Church, rural Ridgeway with interment in Madison Cemetery. The Rev. Phillip Olson and Rev. Ginny Olson officiated. Pallbearers were: Kenneth Engbretson, Richard Engbretson, Robert Engbretson, Virgil Kellison, Ted Kjosa, Dean Larson, Dennis Larson, Marvin Vick, and Dean Witzke. French & Balik Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Marjorie, 73, died Monday, June 25, 2001 at the Winneshiek County Memorial Hospital following a long illness.

Marjorie Dean Engbretson was born September 3, 1927 at Clarksville, AR the daughter of Denver and Berta (Laster) Houston. She was baptized at an early age at the Harmony Presbyterian church in Harmony, AR. She attended Clarksville Schools.

On February 9, 1945 she married Irvin Engbrestson at McAlester, OK while he was a serviceman. Majorie and Irvin made their home on the farm west of Decorah until they moved to town in 1990. Marjorie was a member of Madison Lutheran Church where she confirmed her faith as an adult on January 23, 1949.

She was a member of the Madison W/ELCA and the Rebecca Circle. She worked as a Nurse’s Aide for many years. She also did a lot of volunteer work with the SHARE Food Program and Helping Services. She enjoyed crocheting, talking on the C.B. and watching rodeos.

She is survived by her husband Irvin of Decorah; one daughter: Carol “Sue” Engbretson of Decorah; her mother: Berta Houston of Clarksville, AR; and one sister: Augusta Chaney of Clarksville, AR.

Marjorie was preceded in death by her father, Denver; and one brother: James.


Ruben Gamez

Funeral services for Ruben Gamez were held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, June 30, at the Assumption Worship Center with interment in Calvary Cemetery, both in Cresco. The Rev. Henry W. Charipar officiated. Pallbearers were his nephews: Kylan Gamez, Kole Gamez, Wayne Cummings, Jeff Gamez, Mario Gamez and David Lopez. Honorary pallbearers were his brothers: Daniel, Charles, Adolph, and David Gamez. Conway Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Ruben died on Tuesday, June 26, 2001 in Cresco.

Ruben Z. Gamez was born September 8, 1939 in Mason, MI the son of Daniel and Rita (Zavaia) Gamez. When a young man, the family moved to many areas where employment was available, living in Michigan, Texas, back to Michigan, and eventually, to Minnesota where Ruben graduated from Austin High School. He then attended Hamilton Business College in Mason city, graduating with an Associate Degree in Business in 1960. In 1961, he was called upon to serve his country and entered the Army in August of 1962, he was stationed in Germany where he met his future wife.

On September 3, 1963 he married Johanna Abberger in St. Georgen, Germany. In December of 1963, he returned to the U.S. and was honorably discharged. They made their first home in Decorah. In September of 1965 they moved to Minneapolis, MN living there until 1969. From fall 1969 to spring 1975 Ruben and his family made St. Georgen, Germany their home, where he was employed by a german firm, within its export sales department. In 1975 the family returned to ther U.S. settling in Cresco. Although Ruben found successful employment with various fields, his primary interest focused upon sales and brokerage.

He enjoyed music, reading, exploring the information superhighway, gardening, and engaging in outdoor activities and home improvement projects.

He is survived by his wife Johanna; two sons: Robert of Manhattan, KS and Paul of Cedar Rapids; his parents: Daniel and Rita Gamez of Cresco; four brothers: Daniel Jr. of Pensacola, FL, Chalres of Arcadia, WI, David of Hastings, MN, and Adolph of Cresco; four sisters: Rosa Lopez of Des Moines, Josephine Cummings of Lansing, MN, Diane Grandia of Grand Rapids, MI, and Denise Gamez of Wheaton, IL.


Susan Bruess

Funeral services for Susan Bruess of Garnavillo were held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, June 29, at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Protivin with Rev. John Moser officiating. Interment was in Holy Trinity Catholic Church Cemetery in Protivin. Pallbearers were: Jamie Jirak, Kurt Jirak, Jason Reiseck, Corey Straw, Jacob Bruess, and Dalton Bruess. Hugeback Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Susan, 45, died Tuesday, June 26, 2001 at The University of Iowa Hospital in Iowa City, following a brief illness.

Susan L. Bruess was born August 26, 1955 in Cresco, the daughter of Arthur and Irene (Huinker) Bruess. Susan was a long time resident at G & G Living Center, Garnavillo.

She is survived by her mother: Irene Bruess of Protivin; two brothers: Larry of Protivin and Randy also of Protivin; seven sisters: Donna Reiseck of Waterloo, Diane Sullivan, Kathy Ryan, Jan Hansmeier, Connie Lukes all of Protivin, Betty Soukup of Spillville, and Cindy King of Mason City.

Susan was preceded in death by her father: Arthur; and an infant brother: Lawrence.


Virgil Rice

Funeral services for Virgil Rice were held at 2:00 p.m. Monday, July 2 at the United Methodist Church with interment in Pleasant Hill Cemetery, both in Lime Springs. The Rev. Margaret Asabea officiated. Lindstrom Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Virgil, 83, died Thursday, June 28, 2001 at the Cresco Hospital.

Virgil Raymond Rice was born July 21, 1917 at Clear Lake the son of Clark Condit and Ella Gertrude (Hamstreet) Rice. He attended school in Clear Lake graduating from high school in 1935.

On October 15, 1939 he married Agnes Polsdofer at Swaledale. He farmed at Clear Lake five years and at Rockwell 10 years before moving to Lime Springs. He was initially a farmer, but was also a salesman and originator of the SMI pallet plant, which he owned and managed for 25 years. He was 4-H leader for 25 years and served as chairman of the leaders in Cerro Gordo county. He was co-chairman of the Howard Co. Republican Party for 13 years.

Virgil was baptized in the United Methodist church in Clear Lake and is presently a member of the United Methodist Church in Lime Springs.

He is survived by his wife Agnes; and five children: Linda Lukens of Versailles, IN, Donna Bonnstetter of West Bend, Clair Rice of Verndale, MN, Dennis Rice of Lime Springs, and Betty VandeLaare of Mendota Heights, MN; 16 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; some step grandchildren; one brother: Carrol of Swaledale; and two sisters: Geneva Felton of Portland, OR and Edith Edson of Berkeley, CA.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and his brothers: Kenneth, Paul, Clifford, and Harold.
