Mildred E. “Teeny” Schuler, 86, was called to be with her Lord when she passed away peacefully Tuesday, April 7, 2009, at Mercy Medical Center, North Iowa, Mason City, Iowa.  Funeral services were held Tuesday, April 14, at Zion Lutheran Church, Clear Lake, with the Rev. Dean Hess presiding. Internment will be in the Little Point Sable Stone Church cemetery located on the shores of Lake Michigan near Shelby, Mich. where memorial services will be conducted next summer.
Teeny was an energetic person participating in many civic causes and was always there to help other people when needed.  She was a tireless worker for various causes.  She had an appreciation of fairness, and was quick to forgive with remarkable compassion.
She was born on Dec. 7, 1922, the seventh of ten children of Dr. Herbert W. and Helen Gartside Hines in Chicago, Ill. She spent her early childhood in Springfield, Ill., graduating from Springfield High School in 1940.  She graduated from the University of Iowa in 1946 with a B.S. degree in nursing.  While continuing her nursing education studying toward a masters degree she worked as the head nurse for Currier Hall dormitory.  On June 4, 1948, she was married to Louis E. Schuler, who was a student at the University College of Law.
The Schulers moved to Clear Lake, where Mr. Schuler commenced the practice of law with Edward R. Boyle in the summer of 1949.  Teeny continued her nursing career teaching at Mercy Hospital McCauley Hall nursing school.  Later she became school nurse for Clear Lake public schools until the birth of her third child in 1954, after which she pursued occasional nursing activities at Mercy Hospital.
Teeny was a devoted mother to all five of her children, reading the Holy Scriptures, classic literature as well as playing good music to her young family.  She was proud of her five children and their educational achievement, all of whom in their careers have earned a total of nine college degrees.  While raising her children, she will be remembered for her generosity, energy, and compassion, serving as the Clear Lake PTA president.
After her children graduated from school, she was chosen to become one of the 10 teachers of the Bethel series under the tutelage of the Rev. Murley Severtson, pastor of Zion Lutheran Church.  The Bethel series covered both Old and New Testament literature and history.
She subsequently became interested in politics, becoming a district chairman of the Republican Women’s Club and later becoming a member of the state central committee of the Republican Party in Iowa.  She was a tireless worker for Senator Grassley and Governor Branstad in their early careers.  While participating in local and state politics, she was chosen as a delegate to support Governor Ronald Reagan in his bid for the party nomination at the 1976 Republican National Convention held in Kansas City. Though unsuccessful that year, through efforts of staunch supporters like Teeny, he eventually succeeded in 1980.  She later became personally acquainted with President Ronald Reagan and President George H. W. Bush, both for whom she was a tireless worker.
After a long active period in politics, Teeny became interested in the Mason City YMCA.  She was a consistent fund raiser and supporter of the YMCA, serving in many capacities including the Board of Directors.  She became a swimmer and an avid racquetball player, teaching young people racquetball and challenging all comers.  She was volunteer of the year in 1987 and won her women’s league a couple of years.
Throughout all of her various activities, she was a loyal supporter and fan of the Iowa Hawkeyes in all of their sports programs.  Teeny was a member of the Chi Omega sorority.   She was past president of the Clear Lake chapter of the PEO and 20th Century clubs.
Teeny spent most of her summers at her parents’ family cottage on the shores of Lake Michigan.  She later became the owner, along with her husband, of their own cottage which she dearly loved.  The Schulers also spent many winter vacations with the dear friends, Hans and Inge Sell, at Marco Island, Fla.
