Arlen “Peep” James Monson, 73, of Charles
City, Iowa passed away Sunday, Sept. 30,
2007 at St. Mary’s Hospital, Rochester,
Minn. A memorial service will be held at
10:30 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 4, at St. John’s
Lutheran Church, 200 South Main St, Charles
City, with the Rev. Dennis Niezwaag
officiating. Visitation will be offered one
hour prior to the service. The
Shannon-Wilson American Legion Post #174
will conduct military honors. Memorials are
suggested to be contributed to the American
Heart Association.
Arlen was born Nov. 26, 1933, the son of
Alfred and Evelyn (Welsh) Monson, in Britt,
Iowa. Arlen graduated from Ventura High
School in 1952 and holds the record for
longest completed pass at Ventura High
School.
Arlen served away in the U.S. Army from
1952 to 1954. Arlen and Janice (Patten)
were married on Sept. 5, 1958, at St. John’s
Lutheran Church in Charles City. Arlen
worked for Northern Natural Gas as a right
away man, then for Salsbury Chemical, later
Cambrex, as a chemical reactor operator
until he retired in 1996.
Arlen enjoyed watching sports and
playing cards. He enjoyed the outdoors
especially when fishing, bow hunting, and
golfing. He appreciated the beauty of
nature and enjoyed woodworking, gardening,
making wine and grape juice, canning
vegetables from his garden and drying
fruits, which he shared with many. He
adored his grandchildren and thoroughly
enjoyed spending time with them and telling
them his descriptive stories. Arlen was a
member of the Shannon-Wilson American Legion
Post #174.
Arlen is survived by his wife Janice
Monson, Charles City; two daughters, Rebecca
(Brian) Stogdill and their children
Mikkyahaila and Noël, Charles City; Amy
Monson and her daughter, Lynnea Lehmeier,
Rochester; two brothers, Gerald Michael
(Karen) Monson, Altoona, Iowa and Alan
(Donna) Monson, Clear Lake; four sisters,
Bonnie Holmgaard, Rockford, Ill., Rita Lee,
Clear Lake, Shirley (Jim) Knapp, Iowa City,
Iowa, and Gloria (Mike) Kline, Bettendorf,
Iowa; two sisters-in-law, Pat Monson and
Marsha Monson of Clear Lake.
Arlen was preceded in death by his
parents and three brothers, Eugene, Dean and
Mark Monson.
Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, Clear
Lake, was in charge of arrangements.
Ruth Eileen Nuehring, 89, 401 W. 10th
Ave N., Clear Lake, died Wednesday, Sept.
26, 2007, at her Courtyard Assisted Living
home.
A memorial service was held Monday, Oct.
1, at Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, Clear
Lake, with Ruth’s son, Craig Nuehring
officiating. Inurnment was in the Clear
Lake Cemetery.
The family of Ruth Eileen Nuehring has
requested that memorial contributions be
made to the Zion Lutheran Church in her
memory.
Ruth Eileen (Ward) Nuehring was born
Dec. 31, 1917, in Wesley, Iowa, the daughter
of George and Edith (Schimmel) Ward. She
was a graduate of Britt High School and
received her teaching certificate at the
Normal Teaching School in Cedar Falls,
Iowa. Ruth taught at a country school in
Orthel Township, Hancock County for three
years and worked as a key punch operator for
the IRS in Kansas City for several years.
She was united in marriage to Arthur
Nuehring on Jan. 21, 1939, in Britt. They
spent most of their married life in the
Kansas City area.
She is a member of Zion Lutheran Church
in Clear Lake.
Ruth loved and enjoyed spending time
with her family and grandchildren, and also
enjoyed sewing quilts for her grandchildren
and Zion Lutheran Church. She also enjoyed
playing the piano and the electric organ.
Left to cherish her memory is her
husband, Arthur Nuehring, of Clear Lake;
daughter, Linda Thatcher of New Port Richey,
Fla.; son, Craig (Carol) Nuehring of Clear
Lake; grandchildren, Dan (Tara) Nuehring of
Mankato, Minn., Matt Nuehring of Fort Dodge,
Iowa, Jennifer (Erick) Navarro of New York ,
N.Y., Michael Ruda of Lutz, Fla., and Karin
Thatcher of New Port Richey, Fla.; one
great-granddaughter, Alaina Nuehring of
Mankato, Minn.; and a brother, Chan
(Rosemary) Ward of Clear Lake; as well as
other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her
parents, George and Edith Ward; brother, Don
Ward; a sister, Dorothy Haag; and a
sister-in-law, Dorothy Ward.

Christopher Sillman was born on Aug. 4, 1965 in Britt, Iowa to Keith and Mary (Pritchard) Sillman. He graduated from Wellsburg High School in 1983. He attended Iowa State University. He married Jennifer Nissen on Feb. 14, 1992 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Eldora, Iowa.
He was employed by HCS Builders for 15 years and was currently a designer and partner. In 2000, he completed his bachelor’s degree from William Penn University. He was a devoted family man. He loved golfing, camping, and entertaining friends and family. He was an avid fan of all ISU athletics. He also enjoyed his dogs.
He was a member of St. Cecilia Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus, and Adelante Fraternity.
He is survived by his wife, Jennifer Sillman and their four daughters, Lauren, Delaney, Emma, and Julia of Ames; mother and step-father, Mary Sillman (Jerry) Johnson of Tama, Iowa; brother, Anthony (Heidi) Sillman of Ackley, Iowa; three sisters, Erin (Gary) Bjornstad of Bloomington, Minn., Molly (Bruce) Linde of Fort Dodge, Iowa, and Anne (Josh) Sents of Ames; father-in-law, Bill Nissen of Clear Lake; sister-in-law, Cindy Nissen and her fiancé of Rockford, Ill.; five nieces; four nephews; and many aunts, uncles, and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his father and grandparents.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Chris Sillman Memorial Fund, c/o First National Bank in Ames.
Stevens Memorial Chapel in Ames was in charge of arrangements.

Muriel was born Oct. 16, 1918 in Kanawha, Iowa the daughter of Bert and Alma (Erickson) Larson. She graduated from Kanawha High School in 1936. She married William Cooper on Sept. 20, 1937 in Kanawha. They farmed in the Kanawha and Ventura areas.
She worked for the Ventura schools until moving to Forest City in 1967 where she worked for Waldorf College and the Forest City Bakery. In 1977 Bill and Muriel retired and moved to Mountain Home, Ark., living there until 1986 when they moved to Clear Lake.
Muriel was a member of Zion Lutheran Church. She enjoyed sewing quilt blocks for her church; her garden, which she shared with family and friends; growing flowers; her cat Cuddles and especially spending time with family.
She is survived by two children, Wayne Cooper and his wife, Jean, West Des Moines, Iowa, Vicki Anderson and her husband, William, Clear Lake; six grandchildren, Gregory Cooper, Oskaloosa, Iowa, Michelle Lane, Gretna, Neb., Kimberly Cooper, West Des Moines, Chad Willis, Des Moines, Stephanie Willis, Clear Lake and Brent Willis, Klemme, Iowa; and three great-grandchildren, Jamie, Katie and Emily.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, William; son, Dennis; brother, Tolfred Larson and sisters, Irene Benson and Bernice Williams.

Irene Elizabeth (Einck) Schissel was born June 24, 1910, the daughter of Benjamin and Julia Doerr Einck in Castalia. Irene graduated from Postville High School in 1928.
Irene married John. W. Schissel, Sr. June 2, 1930 at St. Francis De Sales Catholic Church in Ossian. She taught country school for one year. John and Irene farmed in Winneshiek County, retired and moved into Decorah in 1976. She enjoyed gardening and making afghans for all the grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Irene is survived by her two daughters, Adroit (Leonard) Triska, Decorah, and Kathleen (Eldon) Vine, Clear Lake; one brother, Jerome (Norma) Einck, Decorah; nine grandchildren, Randy and Cindy Schissel, Ruth and Tom Boeding, Julie Einck, Terri Wiltgen, Pat and Jay Courtney, Sandy and Kris Fadness, Dianne and Darren Young, Ann Hoefer, Kyle and Tish Vine; 21 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
Irene was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, John W. Schissel on May 6, 1979; a son, John W. Schissel, Jr. in 1963; one grandson, James Vine in 1978; a sister, Amanda (Henry) Schultz; and two brothers, Arthur (Mildred) Einck and Frederick (Irene) Einck.
Mass of Christian Burial was held Friday, Sept. 14, at St. Benedict’s Catholic Church in Decorah with the Rev. Phillip Gibbs officiating. Pall bearers were Kyle Vine, Lee Einck, Tyler Courtney, Brad Boeding, Zack Fadness, Travis Wiltgen and Randy Schissel. Interment was at St. Benedict’s Catholic Cemetery with Schluter-Balik Funeral Home.
