    James K. Lane, of 4709 E. Calypeo Ave., Mesa, Az. 85206 passed away Dec. 4, 2007.  He was born Oct. 29, 1917 in Grinnell, Iowa. Jim and Jane McMullen were united in marriage in Clear Lake.  He served in the Navy during WWII.  Memorial services will be held at Clear Lake at a later date.

Lonnie W. Davis

 

    Lonnie W. Davis, 49, of 708 S. 8th St., Clear Lake, Iowa and formerly of California, died Tuesday, Dec. 4, 2007 at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City, Iowa.
    Memorial services were held Friday, Dec. 7, at Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel with the Rev. Ed Bard, Chaplain of Hospice North Iowa, officiating.  Family suggests memorials to Lonnie W. Davis Memorial Fund.
    Lonnie was born in California, the son of Micki Davis.  He had lived in California until moving to Clear Lake to live with his daughter.
    He enjoyed playing his guitar and harmonica, and fishing.
    He is survived by his daughter, Angela Davis; grandson, Devon Campbell of Clear Lake, and a brother, Michael Davis, Modesto, Calif. 
    He was preceded in death by his mother, Micki Davis.

    Millus Anne Eastman Charlson, 69, of 512 8th Ave. N., Clear Lake, died Thursday, Dec. 6, 2007 at Muse Norris Hospice, Mason City, Iowa.
      Funeral services were held Tuesday, Dec. 11 at United Methodist Church, Clear Lake, with the Rev. Diana A. Hoover officiating.  Burial followed at Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery, Mason City.
    Family suggests memorials to Clear Lake United Methodist Church or Hospice of North Iowa.
      Millus was born April 1, 1938 in Mason City, the daughter of Donald S.  and Liberty M. (Stephens) Eastman.  She attended elementary school in Clear Lake, graduated from West High Waterloo, and earned her Bachelors Degree from University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls, Iowa.
      Millus married Roger E. Charlson on July 1963 at Trinity Lutheran Church, Waterloo. They lived in Clarion, Iowa then Fort Dodge, Iowa where Millus worked as a telephone switchboard operator and then as receptionist for Ft. Dodge Labs and Iowa Beef.  Divorced, Millus returned to Waterloo to work with the State of Iowa Soil Conservation.  Later she moved to Clear Lake where she recently worked with the Girl Scout office in Mason City.  She loved to be with family, play piano, sew, bake, work with ceramics, and play cards at Singles Club.  Millus was active in church choir, bells, and taught Sunday School.
      She is survived by her four children:  son, Steven E. Charlson (wife Alison) Des Moines, Iowa, daughter, Anne M. Charlson Hatoum (husband Nassir) of West Des Moines, Iowa, daughter, Carolyn K. Charlson Ferry of Eagle Grove, Iowa, and daughter, Susan E. Charlson of Eagle Grove; a sister, Miriam Eden (husband Jim) of Colorado; and ex-husband, Roger E. Charlson of Fort Dodge;  13 grandchildren:  Emily Charlson, Kevin Charlson, Steven Charlson, John Charlson, Nicholaus Ferry, Mason Ferry, Stephanie Ferry, Jordan Ferry, Brooklynn Ferry, Kaitlynn Ferry, Eric Lawler, Faith Lawler, and Ashley Lawler.
      She was preceded in death by her father and stepmother, Don and Myra Eastman of Clear Lake; mother and stepfather, Liberty and Lyle Jenkins of Waterloo; and brother, Earl James Eastman of Clear Lake.
    Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, Clear Lake, was in charge of arrangements.

Ardith A. Meyer

 

    Ardith A. Meyer, 79, 211 E. Lake St., Ventura, died Thursday, Dec. 6, 2007 at the Good Shepherd Health Center, Mason City, Iowa.  A memorial service was held Monday, Dec. 10, at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Garner, Iowa with Rev. Carl Hedberg officiating.  Inurnment was in Memorial Park Cemetery, Mason City.  Memorials may be given to Good Shepherd Health Center or Hospice of North Iowa in Memory of Ardith A. Meyer.
     Ardith was born Jan. 2, 1928 in Mason City, the daughter of Leon and Frances (Brokaw) Probert.  She graduated from Mason City High School in 1946 and attended Mason City Junior College.  She was assistant telephone operator for Northwestern Bell in Mason City.  Ardith married Lambert Meyer on July 7, 1952 in Mason City.  She worked at the phone company until she quit to raise a family.  They lived on a farm south of Ventura where they raised turkeys.  After her family was raised she went to work for Unisys and later Rockwell Collins, until she retired.  They moved to their present residence in 1966.
     She loved reading, crossword puzzles, traveling and taking her grandchildren shopping.  Ardith was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church of rural Garner.
     Ardith is survived by her husband, Lambert Meyer, Ventura; one son, Stanley Meyer and his wife, Elaine, Clear Lake; three grandchildren, Abby Meyer and her special friend, Tony Bauman, Clear Lake, Seth Meyer, Cherokee, Iowa and Anna Meyer, Iowa City, Iowa; a brother, Leon Probert, Mason City; sisters-in-law, Jean Probert, Seville, Ohio,  Elaine Lauterback and her husband, Richard, Iowa Falls, Iowa, Dorothy Meyer, Miami, Fla. and Joann Meyer, Milwaukee, Wis.; brothers-in-law, Arthur Meyer and his wife, Pat, Clear Lake, Glen Meyer and his wife, Roberta, Iowa Falls, and Harold Meyer and his wife, Bonnie, Waterloo, Iowa.
     Ardith was preceded in death by her parents; her brother, Paul Probert; daughter, Linda Meyer; and brothers-in-law, Victor and Raymond Meyer.
    Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, Clear Lake, was in charge of arrangements.

     Ruth Abrams, 80, of Mason City, Iowa, died Saturday, Dec. 8, 2007 at Mercy Medical Center of North Iowa, Mason City. A funeral service will be held Saturday, Dec. 15, 11 a.m., at Redeemer Lutheran Church, Ventura, with the Rev. Daird Korth officiating.  Visitation will be held Friday, Dec. 14, from 4 - 7 p.m. at Ward Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. 4th St., Clear Lake.  Interment services will be held at Memorial Park Cemetery, Mason City.  Memorials may be given to the Ruth Abrams Memorial Fund.
      Ruth was born April 18, 1927 in Erskine, Minn., the daughter of Einar H. and Ida Elvina (Olson) Lindseth.  She graduated from Erskine High School in 1944.  She married Melvin Abrams on Oct. 23, 1945.  They moved to the Thornton, Iowa area where they raised their four children on a farm until 1962.  After farming, Melvin formed the Abrams Construction Company, where Ruth served as the office manager.  After the children were grown, Melvin and Ruth moved to Mason City where Ruth continued her education by completing college accounting classes.  She became employed as a bookkeeper for a service supply company as well as continuing her own accounting business for over 10 years.  Shortly thereafter she followed her passion by starting a sewing business called “Ruth’s Sewing Basket.” She was well known for wedding dresses, prom dresses, and adornments for local sports, college, and professional uniforms. 
       Ruth loved doing crafts, playing music, gardening and traveling with Melvin, her husband of nearly 60 years.  She was a member of the Redeemer Lutheran Church of Ventura, where she served as the former church organist, sang for many years in the choir, and volunteered with the church ladies aide group.   
      At the time of her passing she was surrounded by all her loving children and a number of grandchildren. Ruth is survived by her four children, Bruce Abrams, Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Gary Abrams and his wife, Laura, Bloomington, Minn., Diane Schinagel, Clear Lake, and Gloria Abrams, Marshalltown, Iowa; four grandchildren, Beau Schinagel, Nichole Schinagel, Jeremy Abrams and his wife, Lofan, and Josh Abrams and his wife, Julianna; six great-grandchildren; Jahnya Schinagel and Tirrell Hopkins, Cael and Camryn Abrams, Sedona and Finley Forsberg.  Ruth will be missed by her three brothers, Eivind Lindseth and his wife, Marlys, McIntosh, Minn., Nels Lindseth and his wife, Ellen, Erskine, Minn. and Walter Lindseth and his wife, Mary, Erskine, and by many nieces, nephews, cousins. 
    Ruth was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Melvin, Oct. 21, 2004.

    Veryl L. Carr, 82, of 20386 Eagle Ave, died Sunday, Dec. 9, 2007, at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City, Iowa.
    Memorial services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, Dec. 13, at the Clear Lake Christian (Disciples of Christ) Church, 302 Hwy 18 West, Clear Lake, with the Rev. Scott Wilson officiating.  Inurnment will be in the Clear Lake Cemetery.
    Visitation will be held Wednesday from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. at the Ward Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 North 4th Street, Clear Lake.
    Memorials may be directed to the Veryl L. Carr Memorial Fund.
     Veryl L. Carr was born Sept. 1, 1925, in Clear Lake, the son of Ernest and Margaret (Buhrer) Carr.  He graduated from Ventura High School in 1946.  Veryl began farming with his father in the Clear Lake area.  He was united in marriage to Shirley Boyd on March 15, 1953, in Mason City. To this union four children were born.  Veryl worked for the International Mineral and Chemical Company and American Crystal Sugar Company, before working at E.M. Duesenberg Road Construction and other various contractors. He retired in 1985.
    Veryl enjoyed reading, traveling and raising cattle. His greatest love was spending time with his family and friends.  He was a member of the Clear Lake Christian Church and the International Union of Operating Engineers Local 234, Des Moines, Iowa.
    Veryl is survived by his wife of 54 years, Shirley Carr, Clear Lake; children, Donna Carr and special friend, Gary Hall, Garner, Iowa, Robert Carr, Clear Lake, Diane (Ryan) Hove, Eagan, Minn.; grandchildren, Katie, Rebecca and Zachary Hove, Eagan, along with nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
    He is preceded in death by his parents, Ernest and Margaret Carr; a son, Russell Carr; sister, Genevieve Youngerman; and brother, Claire Carr.

    Patricia Darlene (Kelley) Baldwin, 81, of 4 3rd Street N.W., Mason City, Iowa died Tuesday, Dec. 11, 2007, at the Heritage Care Center, Mason City.
    Funeral Mass was held Monday, Dec. 17, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Mason City, with the Rev. Craig E. Steimel officiating.  Interment was in Elmwood St. Joseph Cemetery, Mason City.
    In lieu of flowers memorials may be directed to St. Joseph Catholic Church or Hospice of North Iowa.
    Patricia Darlene Kelley was born Feb. 15, 1926, in Mason City, the daughter of James and Barbara (Jansen) Kelley.  She graduated from St. Joseph High School. Later “Patsy” attended Hamilton Business College and worked for I.P.E.G. as a secretary.  She was united in marriage to Harold J. Baldwin May 7, 1951, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Mason City; to this union three children were born and seven grandchildren.
    Patricia enjoyed family vacations, trips to the casino with her husband and sisters-in-law, and attending numerous activities of her grandchildren. Her greatest love was spending time with her family and friends.  She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, church circle, and Women’s Club.
    Patricia is survived by her children, Janet (Gary) Dasch, Mason City, Carol (Larry) Prescott, Ventura, Keith (Sue) Baldwin, Rockwell, Iowa; seven grandchildren, Sarah Dasch, Clint Prescott, Katie Baldwin and fiancé Robert Shannon, Michael Prescott, Christopher Dasch, Megan Baldwin and Jenna Baldwin; sister, Barbara (Gene) Gallogly, Mason City; along with several nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
    She is preceded in death by her parents, James and Barbara Kelley; husband, Harold Baldwin; brothers, Paul, John, and Richard Kelley and one sister, Virginia Brackey.
    Hogan Bremer Moore Colonial Chapel, Mason City, was in charge of arrangements.

    Alf Heglund Oines, 85, of Wauzeka, Wis., died Thursday, Dec. 13, 2007, at Prairie Maison Healthcare, Prairie du Chien, Wis.
    Born Feb. 10, 1922, in northern Norway on the Island of Kvaeoye, Alf immigrated to the U.S. with his parents, two brothers and two sisters in 1929. The family settled near other immigrant relatives in Galesville, Wis., where he graduated from high school in 1941. He attended La Crosse Teachers College for the fall semester, and when Pearl Harbor was attacked at the end of that year, he enlisted in the Army Air Force.
    While training at Helena (Ark.) Aero Tech he escorted Joanne Hart, a student at a local high school, to a dance at the base. Alf completed training in piloting four-engine airplanes and joined the 20th Air Force on a mission to set up a B-29 heavy bomber base on Saipan in the Mariana Islands.
    After piloting 35 B-29 missions over Japan, Alf returned to civilian life and went to Arkansas to find Joanne. They were married on June 6, 1946, in Helena, Ark., and both attended Michigan State College where Alf graduated with a bachelor or science degree in agronomy and horticulture in 1949.
    Alf started working for Swift and Company’s fertilizer division in south Chicago. In 1958, Alf and family moved to Niles, Mich., and he started Michiana Chemical Company, manufacturing and marketing fertilizer to area farmers.
    Three children were born to Alf and Joanne: Alan, Joel and Peggy. They were all five happy participants and choir members at First Presbyterian Church in Niles. In 1968, Alf sold the business and the family moved to Clear Lake, Iowa, where he became an agronomy instructor at North Iowa Area Community College in Mason City until he retired.
    Alf loved planting trees and gardening with Joanne, sailing his catamaran, and helping build Galilean Lutheran Church. He was a great asset to his younger son and daughter when they built homes.
    Alf was preceded in death by his parents; his older brother, Ole (Clara) Oines of Florida; his younger sister, Leikny (Ans) Kavoukjian of Richfield, Minn.; and his beloved daughter, Peggy Oines (Robert) Hammerslag of Essex, N.Y.
    He is survived by his wife, Joanne, of Wauzeka; his two sons, Alan, of Clear Lake and Joel (Gretchen) of Wauzeka; four grandsons, Micah, Jacob, Emerson and Samuel; his younger brother, Edvard Oines of Sioux Falls, S.D.; and his older sister, Olga Christiansen of La Crosse.
    A memorial service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the church of your choice. Greetings may be sent to Joanne Oines in Wauzeka, Wis.,  53826.

    Norris J. Treloar, 87, of Clear Lake, passed away Friday, Dec. 14, 2007 at the Good Shepherd Health Center in Mason City, Iowa.  Per his wishes, Norris was cremated. A celebration of life memorial gathering will be held at a later date.   
    Norris James Treloar was born Jan. 28, 1920 in Nora Springs, Iowa, the son of Ellsworth and Ada Blanche (Reed) Treloar. He married Estelle Elsa Schneider on April 14, 1940 in Mason City, Iowa.        
    Norris graduated in 1938 from Nora Springs High School.  He farmed the farm on which he was born, located near Nora Springs, retiring in 1987.  He was a member of the Nora Springs Elevator board for many years and on the Board of Adjustment Cerro Gordo County.  
    Survivors include his wife, Estelle Treloar, of Clear Lake; daughter, Judy (Gordon) Fleckenstein of Cedar Falls, Iowa; two sons, John Treloar of Clear Lake and James Scott Treloar of Bigfork, Mont.; five grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.  
    He was preceded in death by his parents, Ellsworth and Ada Treloar; one daughter, Jennifer Treloar; two brothers, Howard and Ralph Treloar; and two sisters, Ruth Hartwell and Elsie Chenoweth.   
    Memorials may be directed to the family for memorial of their choice.
    The Cremation Society of Eastern-Central-Western Iowa assisted with arrangements.

    Karen Margaret Caspersen, 91, went home to Heaven Sunday, Dec. 16, 2007 at the Oakwood Care Center, Clear Lake.  A funeral service will be held Friday, Dec. 21, 1:30 p.m., at Zion Lutheran Church, 112 N. 4th St., Clear Lake, with the Rev. Dean Hess officiating.  Visitation will be Thursday, 4 – 7 p.m. at Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel. Interment will be held at the Clear Lake Cemetery.  Memorials may be given to Zion Lutheran Church or Opportunity Village in her name.
     Karen Margaret was born Dec. 18, 1915 in Clear Lake to Anton and Anna (Holm) Andersen, both of who immigrated to America from Denmark.  Margaret attended Clear Lake schools and graduated in 1934.  On Nov. 18, 1934 she married Victor Christian (Chris) Caspersen.  They enjoyed 59 years of marriage before Chris died in 1993.  Chris and Margaret farmed north of Clear Lake for many years raising crops and all kinds of farm animals.  Margaret especially enjoyed her baby chicks, ducks and geese.  Margaret and Chris have one daughter, Karen JoAnne Bales, born Oct. 19, 1936.
     Margaret is survived by her daughter; her son-in-law, Robert L. Bales; and four grandchildren and their families, Dr. and Mrs. Jason B. (Lisa) Masters from Longwood, Fla., their daughters, Anissa and Kirstin Masters, Todd and Raquel Bales from Peoria, Az.; Troy and Julie Bales and their two sons, Jeffrey and Jonathan from Scottsdale, Az., Trent Bales from Coppell, Texas. She is also survived by two great nieces, Kay Gutterman, San Diego, Calif. and Kim Gutterman, Scottsdale.
     She was preceded in death by her husband; parents; special niece, Evelyn Gutterman; and several aunts and uncles.
      Margaret is a lifelong member of Zion Lutheran Church where she was baptized, confirmed and married.  She taught Sunday School for a few years when she was young.  Margaret has lived in Clear Lake all of her life except for spending summer time at their cottage on the Mississippi River near Marquette, Iowa and 21 winters in Harlingen, Texas.  Margaret was an excellent cook and enjoyed entertaining large Danish parties.  She also loved her home, gardening and fishing.  She is a beloved mother, grandmother and great-grandmother who will be missed very much.

     Richard Reinhard “Dick” Pump, 81, of 602 1st Ave. NW, Rockford, Iowa, passed away on Thursday, Dec. 20, 2007, at the 11th St. Chautauqua Guest Home, Charles City, Iowa, of natural causes.  Funeral services were held Monday, Dec. 24, at the Zion Lutheran Church, Rockford, with Pastor Patricia Shaw officiating.  
    Dick was born Oct. 25, 1926 in Independence, Iowa to Otto and Anna (Barenthin) Pump, and grew up on the family farm in rural Jesup, Iowa.  He was baptized and confirmed in the Jubilee Lutheran Church in rural Black Hawk County.  He attended school in Jubilee and graduated with the class of 1944 from Jesup High School.
    He served in the United States Navy in both World War II and the Korean Conflict, on mine sweepers in the Pacific Ocean near Japan and near Alaska. He earned a Commendation for saving the life of a shipmate after their vessel sunk in the frigid waters near Alaska.  He was a 61 year member of the Pump-Scheer American Legion Post 342 in Jesup.  Both the legion hall and he are named after his uncle Reinhard Pump, who was killed in World War I.
    He married Joan E. Terhune on Aug. 6, 1950 in Jesup, Iowa.  Together, they had five children residing in Jesup, Iowa before moving to Rockford in 1968.  Dick had a variety of careers, including owning a gas station and driving a tank wagon in Jesup, district seed corn sales manager and selling real estate in north Iowa.  He was working for Hinz Real Estate in Charles City until his health prevented him from continuing.
    He served the public in many different ways.  He was a Jesup city councilman, Jesup Boy Scout volunteer, was president of the Shell Rock Valley Little League, was on the Zion Lutheran Church council, was an active member of the Cedar Valley Realtors, the Iowa and the National Association of Realtors, was on the Floyd County Compensation Board, reached the five gallon mark of blood donation, was a member of the Rockford Lions’ Club, and was a Rockford Municipal Light Plant trustee.
    He was a state champion bowler, an avid golfer who never tired of hitting the ball straight, and a sports fan, especially following the Hawkeyes.  He rarely missed his children’s and grandchildren’s sporting events.  Dick enjoyed a good joke, but he enjoyed a bad one even more.
    He is survived by Joan, his wife of 57 years; five children and seven grandchildren: sons, Gary (Pam) of Washington, Iowa, and their three boys Tanner, Terry, and Lucas (McKessey); Larry (Sue) of Rockford, Iowa and their three children, Keith, Cody, and Staci; Rod of Clear Lake, and his son, Barry; Todd (Suzette) of Vancouver, Washington; and daughter, Marty of Peoria, Ill.
    He was preceded in death by his mother in 1938; his father in 1981; his stepmother, Frieda (Koob) in 1986; brother, Calvin Pump in 1986; and great-granddaughter Hannah Pump in 2006.
    Fullerton-Schumburg Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Rockford, was in charge of arrangements.

    Keith D. Huntley, 71, of Clear Lake died Dec. 24, 2007 at Methodist Hospital in Rochester, Minn.  Funeral services were held Friday, Dec. 28, at Zion Lutheran Church, Clear Lake, with the Rev. Dean Hess officiating. Memorials are suggested to the Keith D. Huntley Memorial Fund.
    Keith was born the son of Laurice and Fayne (Patton) Huntley, June 9, 1936 at Mason City, Iowa.  Keith was a 1955 graduate of Clear Lake High School.  While in high school he worked for the Clear Lake Telephone Company and following graduation continued to work for Clear Lake Telephone as a lineman and then as a construction supervisor, retiring March 30, 2007 after 52 years of service.
    Keith was a former member of the Clear Lake Planning and Zoning, and Clear Lake Volunteer Fire Department.  He enjoyed traveling the Midwest and doing home improvement.  He was always busy. He liked old western movies and was a Dallas Cowboy fan. He was also a collector of many things.
    Keith is survived by his wife, Gloria Huntley, of Clear Lake; his children, Scott Huntley of Glendale, Az., Kim (Rod) Carrott, of Ankeny, Iowa, Steve Huntley of Pueblo, Colo., and Paul (Jill) Huntley, of West Des Moines, Iowa;  11 grandchildren, Alex, Arin, Alysa, Kirsten, Jaime, Jared, Josh, Mariah, Emma and Madeline Hayden; three brothers, Ken (Bettie) Huntley, Ron Huntley all of Clear Lake, and Wayne (Marge) Huntley of Rockwell, Iowa; four stepchildren, Mickey (Bill) Truman, Indianola, Iowa, Albert (Loretta) Severino, Des Moines, Iowa, Kathie (Ray) Perez of Des Moines, and Janie (Benny) Mueller, of Clear Lake; and four step-grandchildren, Billy, Josh, A.J. and Alex.
    Keith was preceded in death by his parents.
    Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, Clear Lake, was in charge of arrangement.
