Armstrong
"Jim" R. Armstrong, 74, died Oct. 1, 2006, at
the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason
City, Iowa after a long battle with Parkinson's
disease.
Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m.,
Wednesday, Oct. 4, at the Clear Lake United
Methodist Church, 508 2nd Ave. North, with the
Rev. Diana Hoover officiating. Interment will be
in the Clear Lake Cemetery with full military
honors conducted by members of the Clear Lake
V.F.W. Post 4868. The family has suggested
anyone who would like to ride their motorcycle
is welcome to as a way to honor Jim for his love
of riding.
Memorials may be directed to the James "Jim" R.
Armstrong Memorial Fund.
James Richard Armstrong was born Sept. 17, 1932,
in Dows, Iowa the son of DeLos and Margaret
(Smith) Armstrong. Jim graduated from Clear Lake
High School in 1952. He enlisted into the United
States Army and was honorably discharged Jan.
31, 1960. Jim was united in marriage to Arlene
Mudderman on March 16, 1960, at the Little Brown
Church, Nausha, Iowa. To this union four
children were born. Jim was a truck driver for
many years.
Jim loved taking trips on his motorcycle and
tinkering with electronics. His greatest love
was spending time with his family and friends.
He was a member of the North Iowa Road Riders,
Muddy Pond C.B. Club, Amateur Ham Radio
Organization, Harding Masonic Lodge, and enjoyed
helping the Red Cross.
Jim is survived by his daughters, Pamela
Armstrong, Clear Lake, and Donna Armstrong,
Clear Lake; granddaughter, Hayley Armstrong,
Clear Lake; sister, Irene (Lyle) Alshouse,
Dubuque, Iowa; brothers, Robert (Sally)
Armstrong, Rochester Hill, Mich., and Paul
(Linda) Armstrong, Des Moines, Iowa along with
several nieces, nephews, other relatives and
friends.
Jim is preceded in death by his parents, DeLos
and Margaret Armstrong; wife, Arlene Armstrong;
infant son, Norman Armstrong, and one daughter
in infancy.

Elwood C. "Piltz"
Pilz
Elwood C. "Piltz" Pilz, 83, Clear Lake, died
Wednesday, Sept. 13, 2006 at the Muse-Norris
Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City, Iowa. A
funeral service will be held Tuesday, Oct. 10,
10:30 a.m., at Zion Lutheran Church, 112 N. 4th
St., Clear Lake, with the Rev. Derik Yarian
officiating. Visitation will be held Monday, Oct
9, from 5 7 p.m. at Ward-Van Slyke Colonial
Chapel; and one hour preceding the service at
Zion Lutheran Church. Interment will be at
Memorial Park Cemetery, Mason City, with
Military Honors performed by the Clear Lake
V.F.W. Memorials may be given to Hospice of
North Iowa in his name.
Elwood was born Oct. 24, 1922 in Lockport, Ill.,
the son of Fred and Selma (Boehnke) Pilz. He
graduated from Ventura High School in 1940 and
attended Welding School in Joliet, Ill. Pilz
married Elsie "Julie" Mae Juhl March 4, 1942 in
Kahooka, Mo. They moved to Clear Lake. He
enlisted in the U.S. Army in WWII. Following the
service he came back to Clear Lake and worked
for the Clear Lake Bakery as a route salesman
until he retired.
Pilz enjoyed his flowers, birds and fishing. He
was a very patriotic man with a very gentle
spirit. He loved dancing with the love of his
life, Julie, at the Surf Ballroom to Glenn
Miller. He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church
and the Clear Lake V.F.W.
Pilz is survived by his daughter, Genie Hanson,
and her husband, Bob, Albert Lea, Minn.;
grandchildren, Debra Hanson (Roland Krueger),
Winston-Salem, N.C. and Dan Hanson (Laurie
Casserly), Huntington, Vermont; sisters-in-law,
Ruth Juhl, Clear Lake, Alice Thompson, Tacoma,
Wash. and Ruth Juhl, Mason City.
He was preceded in death by his parents and
wife, Julie, in 1992.

Duane Cook
Duane Cook, age 76, of Decorah, Iowa, died on
Sunday, Oct. 1, 2006, at the Oneota Riverview
Care Facility in Decorah, following a sudden
illness.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on
Thursday, Oct. 5, at the Decorah Lutheran
Church, with Rev. James Glesne, Rev. Bryan
Robertson and Rev. Allan Vik officiating. Burial
will be in the Phelps Cemetery, Decorah, with
military rites by the Helof Holm V.F.W Chapter
#1977.
Friends may call from 3 - 7 p.m. on Wednesday at
the Schluter Balik Funeral Home, in Decorah
and after 10 a.m. at the church on Thursday
morning. There will be a V.F.W Memorial service
at the funeral home at 6 p.m. Wednesday.
Duane Edward Cook was born on Dec. 26, 1929, the
son of Perlie and Lydia (Linderbaum) Cook, near
Castalia, Iowa. He was baptized on March 5, 1931
in Decorah's Methodist Parsonage and confirmed
at Frankville Presbyterian Church. Duane
attended grade school in Moneek, 9th and 10th
grade in Frankville and 11th and 12th grade in
Postville, graduating in 1947. He was drafted
into the U.S. Army on Jan. 3, 1948, and was
stationed at Ft. Riley, Kan. and Ft. Bennings,
Ga. in the Infantry. He was honorable discharged
on Dec. 23, 1948 with the rank of Coporal. He
entered the service again on Sept. 17, 1950 at
Fort Hood, Texas. From there he was stationed at
the 141st General Hospital in Japan with the
ERC-AMEDS. He received the Army Occupational
Medal and the Korean Service Medal. Duane was
discharged on Nov. 19, 1951. After leaving the
service, he worked as a mechanic for a short
period and worked for Irvin Hughes in Frankville,
Iowa, moving houses and drilling wells. He also
worked for Nelson Brothers Well business. Duane
married Marilyn Barth on Jan. 29, 1955 at the
Hauge Lutheran Church, north of Decorah. Duane
started Cook's Pump service in 1958 and served
the area until he retired in 1995. He knew the
depths of a majority of the wells in Winneshiek
County.
Duane was an avid gardener and enjoyed tending
to his flower and vegetable gardens; he had a
mission to have the first and largest tomato of
the year. Duane loved the mighty Mississippi
River and was an avid fisherman who loved
camping with his family, going salmon snagging
and making his own lures. Duane also was a
self-taught man, building many useful things for
his family. He was very creative, doing
woodworking, trying different recipes, and
writing poems and stories. Duane was a member of
the Decorah Lutheran Church. He was a proud
lifetime member of the VFW Post #1977 in
Decorah.
Duane's survivors include his children: Larry
(Deb) Cook, Connie (Myles) Gerleman, Thomas
(Leslie) Cook and Patty (Paul) Casterton, all of
Decorah; Ricky (Denise) Cook, Ridgeway, Iowa and
Bruce (Debbie) Cook, Ventura, Iowa;
grandchildren: Heidi Cook and
great-granddaughter, Madilyn Coulter, Decorah,
Iowa; Tonya Cook, Minneapolis, Minn., Casey
Cook, Chicago, Ill., John Budweg, U.S. Marine
Corps, stationed at Camp LeJeune, N.C., Ross
Budweg, Peter and Grace Gerleman, Cody Cook,
Augusta and Audrey Casterton, all at home in
Decorah, David and Bryant Cook, Ventura, Michael
Cook and Conner Cook, Ridgeway, Iowa; two
brothers, LaVerne (Marian) Cook, Decorah and
Merle Cook, Postville, Iowa and several sisters
and brothers-in-law and nieces and nephews.

"Buster" Lowe
Charles P. "Buster" Lowe, 94, Clear Lake, died
Saturday, Oct. 7, 2006 at Muse-Norris Hospice
Inpatient Unit, Mason City, Iowa.
Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m.,
Thursday, Oct. 12, at the United Methodist
Church, 508 2nd Ave N., Clear Lake, with the
Rev. Diana Hoover and Pastor Ron Feuerhak
officiating. Interment will be at the Clear Lake
Cemetery with military honors by the Clear Lake
V.F.W. Post 4868.
Visitation will be Wednesday from 5 8 p.m. at
Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel.
Memorials may be given to Hospice of North Iowa
or Apple Valley Assisted Living.
Charles, "Buster" was born May 12, 1912, in
Kirksville, Mo., the son of Charles Cecil and
Edith (Paris) Lowe and step-mother Cleo Lowe. He
attended schools in Kirksville, Mo. and Worth
County after the family moved to north Iowa. He
married Myrtle Miller Dec. 21, 1936, on Myrtle's
parent's farm south of Clear Lake. He enlisted
in the U.S. Army in 1944, and served in the 14th
Armored Division and was stationed in Germany
and France. His division marched 2,000 miles in
nine months. Following the war, Buster returned
to his work at Rath Packing Co. in Waterloo,
Iowa, as a general mechanic. He retired after 40
years. He was a member of the Gemologist Club in
Waterloo and Rock Club in Cedar Falls, Iowa.
They moved to Clear Lake in August 1994.
Buster was a member of the Grace United
Methodist Church in Waterloo for 60 years and
was a member of the Clear Lake United Methodist
Church. He was also a member of the Waterloo VFW
Post # 1623 and the Clear Lake V.F.W. 4868.
Buster is survived by his daughter, Charlotte
Snook and her husband, Robert, Edina, Minn.; his
son, Wayne Lowe and his wife, Imagene, Waterloo;
six grandchildren, Robert Snook and his wife,
Judith, Stephanie Frisvold and her husband,
Todd, Thomas Snook and his wife, Andrea, James
Snook and his wife, Tracy, Jean Bienfang and her
husband, Arlon, and John Lowe;
great-grandchildren Drew and Kirsten, Alex,
Benjamin and Zachary, Tucker and Ellory and
Chloe; sisters, Freda Razeb and her husband,
Norman, Plymouth, Iowa and Verna Angel, Mason
City; along with nieces and nephews; and his
"family" at Apple Valley Assisted Living.
Buster is preceded in death by his parents; his
wife Myrtle on June 13, 2001; one daughter, Kay
Marie Lowe; four brothers, Harley, Rolland, J.C.
and Donald; three sisters, Delma Huntley, Thelma
Johnson and Gladys Whitehurst.

Doland
Matthew Charles Doland, 27, of 101 Kellys Ct.,
Forest City, Iowa, died Monday, Oct. 9, 2006, at
the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason
City, Iowa.
A Funeral Mass will be held at 11:30 a.m.,
Wednesday at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, 1001
9th Ave. South, Clear Lake, with Father John
Tilp officiating. Interment will be in Memorial
Park Cemetery, Mason City. Visitation will be
one hour prior to the service at the church.
Memorials may be given to the Matthew Doland
Memorial Fund.
Matthew was born Oct. 23, 1978, in Iowa City,
Iowa, the son of Charles LeRoy and Bernice (Mundt)
Doland. Matthew lived with his mother and family
until he was 17 years old. He then moved to
Forest City to the North Central Human Service
facility. He then lived between Forest City and
home with family for the next 10 years. He
attended Roosevelt Elementary and Middle
Schools, Mason City High School and graduated
from Forest City High School in 1999. Matthew
loved participating in Special Olympic
activities in Forest City, Ames, Clarion, and
Des Moines, Iowa, where he received many ribbons
and medals.
Matthew enjoyed watching Walt Disney musical
movies, participating in Special Olympics, and
bowling. His greatest love was spending time
with family and friends. Matthew attended
different churches regularly.
Matthew is survived by his parents, Bernice
(Jack) Snyder, Clear Lake: siblings, Tammy
(Mickey) Smith, Mason City, and family Tonya
(Jeff) Roberts and family, Mason City, Angie
(Jared) Walters and family, Osage, Iowa, Brandon
Smith, Mason City; brother, Ronald (Jamie)
Doland, and family, Mason City, Christopher
Thompson, Manly, Iowa, Cory and Emily Doland,
Mason City; sister, Christine (Paul) Dirksen,
Mason City, and family, Nathan and Ryan Dirksen,
Mason City, along with other relatives and
friends.
Matthew is preceded in death by his father,
Charles Doland; sister, Terri Lynn Doland;
brother, Norman Eugene Doland; grandmothers,
Pearl Doland, Leona Mundt, and Frances Snyder

Janice K. Atkinson
Janice K. Atkinson, 63, of 49 S. Crescent Dr. in
Mason City, Iowa, died Friday, Oct. 13, 2006 at
the Muse-Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason
City. Funeral services were held Tuesday, Oct.
17, at St. James Lutheran Church, Mason City
with Pastor Jeni Bohls and Pastor Thomas Healey
officiating. Interment was in the Grafton
Cemetery, Grafton, Iowa.

Janice Kay Atkinson was born April 21, 1943 in
Mason City to Claus and Linda (Bublitz) Clausen.
She was baptized and confirmed at St. James
Lutheran Church in Mason City. Janice attended
and graduated from the Mason City High School,
class of 1961. Janice was united in marriage to
Jerry Atkinson. To this union three children
were born. She was employed with Huber Supply
Co. in Mason City as a bookkeeper for 10 years.
Janice had lived in the North Iowa area her
entire life.
Some of Janice's interests and activities
included gardening and relaxing by the water.
Janice was a devoted and nurturing mother and
grandmother. She treasured time spent with her
family, especially the grandchildren.
Grateful for having had the privilege of sharing
in Janice's life are her three children, Rick
(Kathy) Atkinson of Algona, Iowa, Scott Atkinson
and his fiancée (Sara Weringa) of Clear Lake and
Sherri (Mike) McGuire of Thornton, Iowa; six
grandchildren, Tyler and Abbie Atkinson, Alexis
and Ryan Atkinson, Samantha and Megan McGuire;
two step grandchildren; two sisters, Donna
Lawson of Overland Park, Kan., Margie Nasheim of
Glendive, Mont.; one brother, Delmar (Vi)
Clausen of St. Ansgar, Iowa. She is also
survived by her nieces, nephews and some very
good friends.
Preceding Janice in death are her parents, Claus
and Linda Clausen, and one sister, Marlene
Clausen.

"Hinie" Hoy Hansen
Henning "Hinie" Hoy Hansen, 66, died Monday Oct.
16, 2006 at his residence. 3770 Dogwood Ave,
Joice, Iowa. According to his wishes he was
cremated and there will be no service.
Hinie was born in Denmark, the son of Borga and
Anna (Christensen) Hansen. At the age of 18 he
moved with his mother from Denmark to Thornton,
Iowa and worked on a farm. He went to work for
Halverson Welding and later owned and operated
Halverson Welding in Clear Lake for many years.
Hinie worked on lawnmowers, cars, bicycles and
tricycles in the neighborhood and built his own
boat. Hinie retired in 1999 and moved to his
present home in Joice. He enjoyed fishing and
boating.
Hinie is survived by Maria Hansen of Joice; his
four children, Rickey Hansen of Clear Lake,
Michael Hansen of Portland, Ore., Brenda Hansen
of Meservey, Iowa, and Christopher Hansen of
Dallas Texas.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and one
brother, Mogens Hansen.

Barbara Joyce
Dellit
Barbara Joyce Dellit, 57, of Grundy Center, Iowa
died Monday, Oct. 16, of injuries sustained when
she was struck by a car. Memorial services were
held Thursday, Oct. 19, at the United Methodist
Church in Grundy Center with Pastor Matt Miller
officiating. Burial followed cremation in the
Rose Hill Cemetery in Grundy Center. Memorials

Barbara was born Aug. 1, 1949 in Rockwell, Iowa,
the daughter of Howard and Elaine "Peter"
Taylor. She graduated from North Central High
School in 1967 and from North Iowa Area
Community College in 1969. On Aug. 22, 1970 she
was united in marriage to Ronald Dellit at the
United Methodist Church in Manly, Iowa. She
worked for many years in LeMars, Iowa, Lincoln
and Henderson, Neb. and Grundy Center as a
secretary. Barbara moved to Grundy Center in
1979 when her husband obtained a teaching
position in the Grundy Center School system. In
1990 she went back to school and in 1992
fulfilled her dream to become a nurse. She had
been employed by the medical clinic, now Iowa
Health Physicians in Grundy Center since that
time.
Barbara was a member of the United Methodist
Church in Grundy Center, where she was church
secretary briefly and a Sunday school teacher
for many years. She was also involved in the
Girl Scout program.
Barbara is survived by her husband, Ron; a
daughter, Marilyn and her husband, Brent
Askelson of Marion, Iowa; a son, Bradley and his
wife, Andrea Dellit of Suffolk, Va.; two
grandchildren, Kaitlyn and Brady Askelson of
Marion, Iowa; her parents, Howard and Elaine
Taylor of Clear Lake; two brothers, Rex Taylor
and his wife, Connie, of Hanlontown, Iowa and
Norman Taylor of Hanlontown; two sisters,
Kathleen and her husband, Pete Tollenaere of
Fairfield, Iowa, and Joyce Taylor of
Marshalltown, Iowa.

Sweeney
Lyle
J. "Buck" Sweeney, 88, 1705 South Shore Dr.,
Clear Lake, died Tuesday, Oct. 17, 2006 at the
Muse-Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City,
Iowa. A memorial Mass was held Thursday, Oct.
19, at St. Patrick's Catholic Church with Msgr.
Joseph J. Slepicka officiating. Inurnment was
held Friday, at St. Joseph Cemetery, Edgerton,
Wis. Memorials may be given to St. Patrick's
Catholic Church or Newman Catholic Schools,
Mason City.
Buck was born June 16, 1918 in Edgerton, the son
of John and Margaret (McCarthy) Sweeney. He
graduated from Edgerton High School in 1936. He
attended the University of Wisconsin and Milton
College, graduating in 1940. He entered the
Naval Flight Training and got his commission in
the summer of 1940, just before the war broke
out. He was a flight instructor at Banana River,
Fla. for several years. He was a Decorated
Navy-Air Pilot and flew missions during WWII. He
fought in the Battle of Saipan near the end of
the war. He was a Lt. Commander in the U.S. Navy
Air Corp. He married Isabelle "Bel" Molan Aug.
9, 1947 at St. Patrick's Cathedral in New York.
They moved to Des Moines, Iowa in 1958.
Following the service, he worked for Kohler Co.
in Wisconsin. He later was a manufacturer's
representative. In 1958 he started his own
manufacturer's rep agency called Sweeney and
Assoc.
Buck and Bel bought a cottage in Clear Lake in
1965 and enjoyed spending their summers there.
He retired in 1986 and moved their residence to
Bonita Springs, Fla. He enjoyed hunting,
golfing, boating and swimming in the lake. He
was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church,
Clear Lake, and St. Augustine's Catholic Church
in Des Moines.
Buck is survived by his wife Isabelle "Bel"
Sweeney, Clear Lake; three children, Michael
Sweeney, Denver, Colo., Patricia Sweeney,
Bayfield, Wis. and Lyle Sweeney Jr. and his
wife, Jane, Indianola, Iowa; five grandchildren,
Josh Nitsch, Jody Nitsch, Hannah Nitsch,
Elizabeth Sweeney and Abraham Sweeney; and one
great-grandson, Aidan Michael McKuen.
Buck was preceded in death by his parents; one
granddaughter, Hatha Nitsch; seven brothers and
sisters, Mac Sweeney, Donald Sweeney, Betty
Letendre, Kathleen Roehm, Roger Sweeney, Anna
Mae Neiberman and Margaret Chapman.
Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel was in charge of
arrangements.
