DuWayne Stuart "Buck" Holmes, 73, of
600 South Southside Court, Manly, Iowa died early Monday, June 5, 2006,
at Mercy Medical Center North Iowa. According to his wishes his body has
been cremated.
A memorial service will be held 11 a.m., Saturday, June 10, 2006, at
Ward Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 North 4th Street., with Reverend
Mark Young officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to the
service.
Darlene C. Holmes died Sept. 5, 1998, together Darlene and Buck will be
inurned in Memorial Park Cemetery, Mason City, with full military honors
conducted by members of the Mason City Veteran's Memorial Association.
Memorials may be directed to the DuWayne "Buck" Holmes Memorial Fund.
DuWayne Stuart Holmes was born Nov. 15, 1932 in Ventura, the son of
Clarence and Helen Holmes. Buck attended the Ventura Community Schools.
Buck enlisted in the United States Army, where he served in the Korean
Conflict. After his honorable discharge Buck married Darlene Katherine
Kantaris at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, June 12, 1955.
Buck worked construction and was a skilled heavy equipment operator for
McKiness Excavating Inc, Mason City, where he worked until the time of
his death.
Buck loved fishing, John Wayne movies, old time country western music,
and driving around enjoying nature. Buck enjoyed sports; he was an avid
Vikings fan, and Iowa Hawkeye fan. He loved having coffee everyday with
his youngest son, Marty. Buck would get together with his sister,
Carolyn, and play card games.
Buck is survived by his daughter, Linda Holmes of Clear Lake, two sons,
Stuart Holmes, Texas and Marty Holmes, Mason City; Grandchildren, Chris
and Mathew Holmes, Michael Magnan and Jennifer, Sean, Brian, Julie,
Greg, Pam, Clint, and Lexus; numerous Great -Grandchildren; sister,
Carolyn Albers, Ventura; nieces and nephews, Steve (Helena) Albers,
Thornton, Suzanne (Dean) Hess, Clear Lake, Cheryl (Randy) Lutz,
Plymouth, Charlene (Silas) Fatland, Colorado; along with other relatives
and friends.
He is preceded in death by his wife, Darlene Holmes; parents, Clarence
and Helen Holmes; his sister, Norma Fatland, and infant brother,
Clarence LaVern.

Marjory Marie Van Duzer, 90, died
Tuesday, May 30, 2006, at the Good Shepherd Health Center in Mason City,
Iowa.
Graveside services will be held at a later date at Memorial Park
Cemetery, Mason City.
The family requests any memorials be directed to Hospice of North Iowa
in her memory.
Marjory was born on July 2, 1915, in Menlo, Iowa, the daughter of Thomas
Ralph and Ethel B. (Mount) Van Duzer. She graduated from Menlo High
School in 1933 and worked as a nurse's aide following graduation. In
1957, Marjory, along with her parents, Ralph and Ethel, moved to Mason
City.
For many years Marjory was an avid walker, enjoyed playing the piano,
attending summer municipal band concerts and the North Iowa Band
Festival. She always had a smile and friendly greeting for everyone she
saw. Marjory was a member of the Wesley United Methodist Church in Mason
City.
Marjory will be greatly missed by her two nieces, Marilyn Johnson and
her husband, Steve, of Clear Lake and Julie Elting and her husband, Jim,
of Madison, Conn.; one great-niece, Abbie Smith and her husband, Jason,
of Mesa, Az. and three great-nephews, Gregory Johnson and his wife,
Anne, of West Des Moines, Iowa, Ryan Elting and his wife, Lindsay, of
Carrboro, N.C., and Andrew Elting of Arlington, Va.
Marjory was preceded in death by her parents and brothers, Charles Wayne
Van Duzer and Franklin Kenneth Van Duzer.
Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, Clear Lake, was in charge of
arrangements.

Arden
T. "Bud" Madson
Arden T. "Bud" Madson, 73, 2416 North Shore Dr., Clear Lake, passed away
peacefully at home with his family at his side Tuesday, June 6, 2006.
For the past year he battled hard and fought courageously with cancer. A
memorial service was held Friday, June 9, at Zion Lutheran Church, Clear
Lake, with the Rev. Dean Hess officiating. According to his wishes, his
body has been cremated. Memorials may be given to the Arden T. Madson
Memorial Fund.
Bud was born Jan. 14, 1933 in Henrytown, Minn., the son of Talbert and
Helen (Helgeson) Madson. He graduated from Preston High School, Preston,
Minn. Bud married Phyllis Putz Aug. 24, 1952 in Fountain City, Wis. Bud
started in the bakery business at Holland's in Rochester, Minn. He was
the owner of a small bakery in Blair, Wis. and two Mr. Donuts at Sioux
City, Iowa. He also worked in an in-store bakery at Dixon, Ill. and in
Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Then he worked for International Multifoods,
Minneapolis, Minn. as tech service. Bud attended ice sculpture and cake
decorating school at Wilton School in Chicago, Ill. Bud and his family
settled in Clear Lake when he went to work for the Clear Lake Bakery,
where he worked for 33 years.
Bud was an avid golfer and fisherman. For the past 10 years he and his
wife enjoyed going to Dauphin Island, Ala. with friends during the
winter months. He especially loved being with his family and
grandchildren!
Bud is survived by his wife of 54 years, Phyllis Madson, Clear Lake;
four children, Dr. Michael Madson, Mountain View, Calif., James Madson
and his wife, Paula, Ames, Iowa, Pati Workman and her husband, Mike,
Milford, Iowa and Jon Madson and his wife, Shari, Oakdale, Minn.; five
grandchildren, Kayla, Kodak, Tenn., Kimberly, Cedar Falls, Iowa, Kyle,
Dodgeville, Wis., Cameron and Noah, Ames, Iowa; his mother, Helen Madson,
Mabel, Minn.; two brothers, Warren Madson and his wife, Annabel, Calmar,
Iowa, and Tom Madson and Jackie, Mabel, Minn.; two sisters, Joanne
Erickson, Cincinnati, Ohio and Susan O'Neill, Chatfield, Minn.; two
brothers-in-law, Donald Putz and his wife, Dorothy, Osseo, Wis. and
Harry Putz and his wife, Judy, Fountain City, Wis.; sister-in-law,
Janice Wogen and her husband, Jon, Olivia, Minn. and many nieces and
nephews.
Bud was preceded in death by his father.

Wilbur Crone
Wilbur Crone, 89, of 2512 North Shore
Drive, Clear Lake passed away peacefully on Wednesday, June 7, 2006. A
memorial service to honor his life and friendships was held Monday, June
12, at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Clear Lake, with Msgr. John Hemann
officiating. Graveside service was at Bingham Township Cemetery in Woden,
Iowa.
Memorials may be directed to St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Hospice of
North Iowa, or a charity of your choice.
Wilbur was born to John and Nora (Aldrich) Crone of rural Woden on Nov.
2, 1916. Wilbur graduated from Woden High School in 1935. Following high
school he moved to Santa Monica, Calif. where he worked for Douglas
Aircraft. He enlisted in the United States Navy and served his country
for 28 months. Fourteen months were spent overseas in the Pacific
region. Following his military service, Wilbur returned to Iowa to be
near his family.
Wilbur was married to Evelyn Colter of Britt, Iowa on Nov. 29, 1952 at
St. Patrick's Church. Together they farmed and raised their family near
Woden. In their younger years they loved to dance, especially at the
Surf Ballroom where they first met. Wilbur and Evelyn enjoyed their life
on the farm, their many friends, neighborhood card club, and their
family.
After retiring in 1982, Wilbur and Evelyn moved to their home in Clear
Lake. Wilbur was a member of the American Legion in Woden and the V.F.W
in Clear Lake.
Wilbur was a devoted husband and father and his grandchildren were a
great joy to him. He also enjoyed playing cards -especially cribbage,
golfing, and his winters spent in the south. Special times were those he
shared with his friends over coffee. We will remember Wilbur for his
quick wit, firm handshake, and gentle soul.
He is survived by his wife, Evelyn,
of 53 years; son, John Crone of Des Moines, Iowa; two daughters, Jenele
(Geoff) Grassle of Wayzata, Minn. and Joanne (Chris) May of Boulder,
Colo. Also surviving are four grandchildren, Lucy, Jack, and Sophia May,
and Williamson (Will) Grassle; his sister-in-law, Rose Crone, of
Burlington, Iowa and many beloved nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Esther Seefeld; three
brothers, Alfred, Albert, and Dean; and two infant grandchildren, Nora
May, and Christopher Grassle.

David Skiye
Connor David Skiye, the beloved son
of Daniel D. and Amber N. (Cobb) Skiye of 1012 6th Ave. S in Clear Lake,
was delivered silent on Saturday, June 10, 2006 at Mercy Medical Center-N.I.
in Mason City, Iowa.
The family will greet relatives and friends from 10 to 11 a.m. on
Friday, June 16, at Fullerton Funeral Home, 123 2nd St. SE in Mason
City. Connor's funeral service will follow the visitation at 11 a.m. at
Fullerton Funeral Home with Dr. George Johnson of the Harvestime Church
in Mason City officiating. Burial will take place in the Babyland
section of the Clear Lake Cemetery.
Those wishing to extend memorials or expressions of sympathy may wish to
direct them to the Connor David Skiye Memorial Fund.
Connor will be forever cherished in the hearts of all those who
anticipated his presence in their lives. He is survived by his parents,
Dan and Amber Skiye and his siblings, Nicholas, Kayla, Cody and Emily
Skiye, all of Clear Lake; his grandparents, Carl and Laura Starbuck of
Clear Lake, Gary and Carolyn Skiye of Belmond, Iowa and David Cobb of
Nora Springs, Iowa; his great-grandparents, Brian and Elaine Poulin of
Mason City, Barb Jones of Manly, Iowa, Judy Johnson of Mason City, David
and Linda Starbuck of Mitchell, Iowa, David and Judy Cobb of Fertile,
Iowa and Roy and Jo Cummings of Belmond and his
great-great-grandparents, Maxine Hansen of Atlantic, Iowa and Orletta
Wagner of Mason City. Connor will also be dearly missed by his aunts and
uncles, Andrew Cobb, Tony Starbuck, Alax Starbuck, Airika Starbuck,
Kendall Cobb, Angela Covington, Paula Schnell and Jennifer Headington
and numerous other relatives and friends.
Preceding Connor in death are his sister, Sara Skiye, and his
grandparents, Bill and Dorothy Skiye.

Dorothy W. Stockdale, 80, died
Tuesday, June 13, 2006, at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason
City, Iowa. According to her wishes her body will be cremated. Ward Van
Slyke Colonial Chapel is in charge of cremation services.
Graveside service will be held Saturday, July 15, at the Clear Lake
Cemetery with Pastor Thomas Healey officiating. Inurnment will be in
Clear Lake Cemetery. There will be no visitation.
Memorials may be directed to Dorothy W. Stockdale Memorial Fund in care
of Glen Stockdale, 210 South 9th Street, Clear Lake, Iowa 50428.
Dorothy was born on Dec. 9, 1925, in Williams, Iowa the daughter of
Joseph and Edith Iverson. She was married to Glen W. Stockdale in
Webster City, Iowa on Jan. 28, 1946. To this union a daughter was born.
Dorothy was a full-time loving mother to her daughter. She found time to
work part-time at various restaurants in town and worked side-by-side
with Glen in his construction business.
Her family was very important to her and she enjoyed spending time with
them, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Left to cherish her memory are her husband of 60 years, Glen Stockdale,
Clear Lake; daughter, Lori, and her husband, Mark Haaf, Clear Lake;
grandchildren, Pamela (Gene) Engelking, Cody Haaf, John (Marisa) Haaf,
and Dawn Jenkins; 10 great-grandchildren; a brother, Richard (Joan)
Iverson; sisters, Helen Janes and Ruth (Bill) Thomas, sisters-in-law,
Helen Stockdale and Gladyce Edel; along with many nieces, nephews and
friends.
She is preceded in death by her parents and one sister in infancy.

Riepma
Mathilda Riepma, 85, passed away on
Tuesday, June 13, 2006, at the Northwest Iowa Health Center Senior Care
in Sheldon, Iowa. Memorial service was held Friday, June 16, at First
Christian Reformed Church in Sheldon. Interment was held in East Lawn
Cemetery, Sheldon.
Mathilda Riepma was born on March 12, 1921, in Lebanon, Iowa. She was
the daughter of Jacob and Jennie (Bonnema) Harmsen. She lived her youth
in rural Hawarden, Iowa, where she attended school.
She was united in marriage to Wilson Riepma of Larchwood, Iowa, on Dec.
4, 1941, in Artesia, Calif. They moved to the Ireton, Iowa, area, where
they farmed. They later moved to Artesia, Calif. In 1958 they moved back
to Iowa where they farmed. They retired and moved to Sheldon, Iowa, in
1973. During their retirement they enjoyed traveling in their RV in
southern Texas during the winter months. They also enjoyed playing
pinochle with friends, fishing, going to auctions and gardening.
Mathilda also enjoyed her family and grandchildren very much. Wilson
passed away on Nov. 11, 2004.
Those left to cherish her memories are three sons and daughters-in-law:
Dennis B. and Ellen Riepma of Spencer, and their daughters: Katie and
Megan; Robert A. and Janice Riepma of Clear Lake, and their children:
Amy Riepma, Eric (Janelle) Riepma and their child: Olivia; Theodore R.
and Peggy Riepma of Sheldon, and their daughters: Rachel (Daniel) Hoeck
and Kimberly Riepma; three sisters: Alice Douma of California, Cynthia
Van Dyke of Idaho, Geneva Andriese of California.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Wilson; her parents; four
brothers, Ben Harmsen, John Harmsen, Jacob Harmsen and Richard Harmsen.

Nielsen
Carl T. Nielsen, 83, of Clear Lake,
died Sunday, June 18, 2006 at the Good Shepherd Care Center, Mason City,
Iowa. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, June 21, at Zion Lutheran
Church, Clear Lake, with the Rev. Dean Hess officiating. Interment will
be in Clear Lake Cemetery with Military Honors by the Clear Lake V.F.W.
Memorials may be made to the Carl T. Nielsen Memorial Fund.
Carl was born Sept. 14, 1922 in Mason City, the son of Niels Thorvald
and Christine M. (Boesen) Nielsen. Carl was a graduate of Clear Lake
High School. Following his graduation he worked at Omaha Steel. Carl
enlisted in the U.S. Army during WWII and served in North Africa,
Normandy and the Bulge. After the service he returned to Clear Lake and
worked at AMPI, retiring in 1983. While working at AMPI he was a union
steward. He was well known for his welding capabilities and he traveled
throughout the Midwest welding at creameries.
Carl enjoyed hunting, fishing, going to all sporting activities and
watching his family. He enjoyed the commorodity at the V.F.W. and being
on the Honor Guard. He was a member of the Clear Lake V.F.W. and the
Teamsters Union.
Carl is survived by his son, Andy (Brenda) Nielsen, and one grandchild,
Levi Nielsen, of Mason City.
He was preceded in death by his parents.

Wick
Ellis J. Wick, 89, 400 Highway 18 W.,
Clear Lake, died Monday, June 12, 2006 at Muse-Norris Hospice Inpatient
Unit, Mason City, Iowa. A funeral service was held Friday, June 16, at
the United Methodist Church, Clear Lake, with the Rev. Keith Scott and
Chaplain Ray Holder officiating. Interment was held at Memorial Park
Cemetery, Mason City. Military Honors were by the Iowa National Guard.
Family suggests memorials to the Ellis Wick Memorial fund.
Ellis was born Jan. 10, 1917 at Canova, S.D, the son of Oscar A. and
Pearl (Gagner) Wick. He was educated in the Canova Public School and
studied electrical engineering at Sioux Falls, S.D. Ellis married
Marguerite Johnson on May 25, 1940 in Yankton, S.D. He enlisted in the
Army on June 3, 1942, and attended basic training in the Army Medical
Field, completed the Army Technology course, then taught X-Ray in Texas
for Army field hospital units (MASH). In August 1942 he was called to
the Army Engineer School at Fort Belvoir, Va., and graduated with the
rank of 2nd Lt. He was assigned to the 361st Engineer Special Service
Regiment which was activated by the U.S. Army Chief of Engineers, which
served in both the ETO and Asiatic theaters. After discharge in April
1946, he was employed at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital in X-Ray and taught
X-Ray Technology.
As a member of the U.S. Army Reserve he was called to active duty in
October 1950. He served with the 36th Engineer Combat Battalion in Korea
and was discharged in November 1952. He returned to X-ray at St. Joseph
Mercy Hospital for five years. Ellis owned and operated a grocery and
meat store on Main Avenue in Clear Lake. Then he owned and operated
Wick's Cottages on City Beach for 17 years. While doing this he also was
administrator for the Army Reserve Center in Mason City for nine years.
Ellis retired after selling the cottages in 1980. He completed six years
active duty and 22 years army reserve duty and retired as Major in 1977.
He received nine Campaign Ribbons with a Bronze Star, the French 1946
Liberty Award, recipient of the Normandy Liberty Medal, June 6, 1997 and
the 50-year anniversary of the Korean War pin from Senator Grassley.
Ellis was a member of the United Methodist Church of Clear Lake. He was
a member of the Clear Lake Noon Lions Club since 1962 where he was
awarded the Warren Coleman Honorary Award - the highest honor conferred
by the Iowa Lions Club. He was also a member of American Legion 1947
were he was named Commander in 1960, and was Adjutant for 27 years. He
helped put over 40 boys through Boy's All State. He was also a lifetime
member of American Legion; V.F.W. 40ET 8; a life member of Disabled
American Veterans (DAV); Member of the Reserve Officer Association (ROA),
and past Vice President of the North Iowa Reserve Association.
He was a charter member of the Clear Lake Fishing Club and member of the
Clear Lake Senior Citizens. He was also a Scout leader in Mason City for
nine years. Ellis was an avid gardener and enjoyed growing unusual
vegetables. He enjoyed fishing and loved wood carving. He traveled the
U.S. and world with his wife, Marguerite.
Ellis is survived by three children, David Wick and his wife, Mary,
Virginia Beach, Va., Annette Dawson, Mason City, and Thomas Wick and his
special friend, Leigh Brouwer, Clear Lake; three grandchildren, Sarah
Wick, Matthew Dawson and Andrew Wick; and several nieces and nephews.
Ellis was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Marguerite on Aug.
18, 2000; his grandson, Noel Wick, and three brothers, Norman, Lawrence
and Roger Wick.

Jacob, 73, was born Oct. 1, 1933. He died Jan. 9, 2006 in Oklahoma City,
Okla.
Donald Ray Spratt, 62, brother of Jacob, died Nov. 7, 1997. Inurnment
for Donald will also be held at this time.

Lawrence "Larry" D. Secory, 80, of
1810 N. 8th St., Clear Lake, died Saturday, June 24, 2006 at the Muse
Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City, Iowa.
Services will be Wednesday, 10:30 a.m., at Zion Lutheran Church, Clear
Lake, with Pastor Jeff Ungs of Galilean Lutheran Church officiating.
Interment will be in the Clear Lake Cemetery. Military honors will be by
the Clear Lake V.F.W. Family suggests memorials to the Larry Secory
Memorial Fund or Hospice of North Iowa.
Larry was born July 1, 1925 in Clear Lake, the son of Edward. L. and
Essie (Kimball) Secory. While in high school he played football,
baseball and basketball and was all conference in football and also
played alto saxophone and had received All State and National Honors. He
was also the senior class president.
Following high school he enlisted in the United States Navy and served
on the U.S.S. Chopper Submarine station in Pearl Harbor during W.W. II.
After the service he moved back to Clear Lake. He played on the Clear
Lake V.F.W. basketball team that won the state championship.
Larry married his high school sweet heart, Betty Foster, on Sept. 14,
1946 at Zion Lutheran Church, Clear Lake. He graduated from Mason City
Business College.
Larry started working for his father, E.L. Secory, in the plumbing
business and continued in the plumbing business until he retired.
He enjoyed gardening, golfing, hunting, the monthly class reunion
committee meetings and attending the small prayer group meetings at
Galilean Lutheran Church.
He served on the Clear Lake City Council for two terms, was a long time
member of Zion Lutheran Church where he was past president and former
Sunday School teacher and was a life time member of Clear Lake V.F.W..
Larry will be sadly missed by his wife, Betty, Clear Lake; three
children: Joel Secory and his wife, Julie, Jon Secory and his wife, Sue,
and Sue Dwyer and her husband, Kim, all of Clear Lake; nine
grandchildren: Joel Secory II and his wife, Amanda, Clear Lake, Dr. Adam
Secory and his wife, Jaime, Waukee, Iowa, Allison Secory, West Des
Moines, Iowa, Ted Secory, West Des Moines, Michael Dwyer and his fiancé,
Shelby Gallagher, Clear Lake, Tim Secory, West Des Moines, Scott Dwyer,
West Des Moines, Andrew "Rip" Secory, Clear Lake, and Cory Dwyer, Clear
Lake; two great-grandchildren, Quintin Masteller and Elle Ryan Secory
and one brother, Don Secory and his wife, Marge, Hemet, Calif.
He was preceded in death by his parents; an infant daughter and one
brother, Ralph Secory.

Michael Max Hinich
Michael Max Hinich, 72, of Clear
Lake, died Thursday, June 22, 2006 at his home after a long battle with
Lou Gehrig's disease. A Funeral Mass was held Monday, June 26, at Holy
Family Catholic Church, Mason City, Iowa with the Rev. Jon M. Seda
officiating. Interment will be held at the Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery,
Mason City. Military Honors will be presented by Mason City Veterans
Memorial Association. A memorial fund toward ALS research in memory of
Michael has been established.
Mike was born Aug. 6, 1934 in Mason City to Mike and Katherine (Hodak)
Hinich. He graduated from Holy Family High School. He served in the army
stationed in Germany. Following the service he attended Forest College
in Chicago, Ill., receiving an electrical engineering degree. He worked
for Kleinschmith in Northbrook, Ill. and Electric System Design until
retiring. He then opened an Italian Restaurant La Nonna AKA Blasi in
Naperville. He retired to Mason City in 1996 and then moved to Clear
Lake.
Michael was known for his generosity, love of sport - especially golf,
entertaining and for showing tremendous courage battling ALS.
Mike is survived by his beloved wife, Tina M. Hinich, Clear Lake;
children, Michael D. Hinich and his wife, Andrea, and their children,
Kaitlyn and Michelle, Rosemont, Ill. and Kathy Hinich Norman and her
husband, John, and their children, Sarah and Eric, Sugar Grove, Ill.,
Patrick Hinich and his wife, Hilary, and their children, Brian and
Jonathon, Thousand Oaks, Calif.; step-children, Susan Bertsch and her

and Jenna, Bartlett, Ill.; a sister, Nancy Walter, Mason City, Iowa;
brother-in-law, Harvey Schauf, Mason City; his first wife, Carol J.
Hinich, Rosemont, Ill., and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces,
great-nephews and friends.
Mike was preceded in death by his parents, Mike and Katie Hinich;
brother, Millhoevan Hinich; sisters, Millie Bielik and Helen Schauf;
brother-in-law, Raymond Walter and niece, Nancy Rae Walter.
Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, Clear Lake, was in charge of
arrangements.

Ralph Ludeke, 1922 - 2005, will be held at the Ell Township Cemetery,
Klemme, Iowa on Saturday, July 8, 2006 at 11 a.m. Guests are invited to
a coffee following the service at the Klemme Country Club.

Marcella "Marcie" Caroline Svoboda,
age 88 of Protivin, Iowa died Saturday, June 17, 2006, at the Bethesda
Meadow Nursing Home in St. Louis, Mo.
A Mass of Christian Burial was held Thursday, June 22, at Holy Trinity
Catholic Church in Protivin with the Rev. David Beckman celebrating the
Mass. Interment was in Holy Trinity Cemetery, Protivin. Grandsons,
Michael Johnsrud, Jason Johnsrud, Brian Svoboda, Bradley Svoboda, Eric
Svoboda, Joel Svoboda and Ryan Svoboda were pallbearers. Honorary
pallbearers were granddaughters, Allison Svoboda, Kristin Wilson, Keri
Johnsrud, Dana James and Sara Gay.
Marcie was born July 12, 1917, on the Kalishek family farm located 2 12
miles south of Protivin in rural Chickasaw County, the daughter of
Charles and Mary (Kovarik) Kalishek. She received her elementary
education in a rural country school and then at Holy Trinity Grade
School. At the age of 14, the Kalishek family moved into Protivin where
she would help her parents in their family meat market. Marcie joined
the adult choir as a freshman and then became the church organist and
later, music director. She was a 1935 graduate of Rudolphinium High
School in Protivin.
On May 15, 1939, at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, she married Edward
John Svoboda. To this union four children were born. The couple made
Protivin their home for the balance of their lives. In 1944, Edward
"Swab" and Marcie purchased the local poultry business from Ed's uncle.
The business continued with Marcie and the children playing a larger
role when Edward became ill in the early 1960's. Edward died on Aug. 25,
1977, and shortly thereafter Marcie sold the business.
Marcie was always very musically active in her church and was helpful in
the early days of the Protivin Czech Choir. She also spent time making
cakes for weddings and other special events. In December of 2003, she
became a resident at the Oneota Nursing Home in Decorah and in February
of this year went to live in the Bethesda Nursing Home in St. Louis to
be near family.
Survivors include three sons; Larry (Helen) Svoboda of Clear Lake,
Edward "Bud" (Diane) Svoboda of St. Charles, Mo., John (Nancy) Svoboda
of Omaha, Neb.; one daughter, Margaret Johnsrud of Chicago, Ill.; 12
grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; one niece, Grace McNeal, of
Protivin.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband and a brother,
Benjamin Kalishek.
