Peter H. Schmidt
Peter H. Schmidt, age 81, of Sunrise Beach, Mo.,
passed away Tuesday, Dec. 27, 2005 at his home. The family will have a private
viewing. Arrangements and cremation are under the direction of the
Kidwell-Garber Laurie-Sunrise Beach Chapel.
Peter was born Sept. 26, 1924 in Audubon, Iowa, the son of Hans and Katie Hansen
Schmidt.
He was united in marriage to Shirley Goodpasture on Sept. 11, 1971.
Mr. Schmidt was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, member of the American
Legion Zack Wheat Post #624 of Sunrise Beach, and the V.F.W. in Audubon, Iowa.
He enjoyed fishing, boating, and carpentry work.
He is survived by his wife, Shirley Schmidt; two sons, Bill H. Schmidt of San
Bernardino, Calif., and Rick D. Cummings and wife, Carol, of Mason City, Iowa;
three daughters, July J. Halsne of Clear Lake, Diane L. Lumm and husband, Rod,
of Camdenton, Mo., Penny S. Cummings of Garner, Iowa; one sister, Florence
Tessman, of Audubon; one brother-in-law, Robert Goodpasture, of Texas; two
sisters-in-law, Doris Stuart and Daisy Schmidt, of Iowa; 11 grandchildren, seven
great-grandchildren, many other relatives and friends.

Karl "Red" Cruse
Karl "Red" Cruse, 82, 2400 South Shore Dr., Clear
Lake, died Wednesday, Dec. 28, 2005 at the Muse-Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit,
Mason City, Iowa. A graveside service was held Friday, Dec. 30, at Memorial Park
Cemetery, Mason City. Pastor Will Hunsaker, from the First Church of the Open
Bible, officiated. Memorials may be given to the Clear Lake First Church of the
Open Bible or Muse-Norris Hospice, Mason City.
Karl was born Feb. 18, 1923 in Abernathy, Texas. He was the owner and operator
of Red's Welding Service in Hale Center, Texas from 1962 until 1993 when he
retired. Karl married Edith Smith in 1991 at Lubbock, Texas. He and his wife
enjoyed spending their retirement years traveling. He also worked as a gate
attendant for the Corps of Engineers. Earlier this year, Karl moved to Clear
Lake. They attended the Open Bible Church in Clear Lake.
Karl is survived by his wife, Edith Cruse, Clear Lake; half brothers, Lawrence
Ballinger, Plainview, Texas and Walter Ballinger, Hale Center, Texas; step
daughter, Nancy Van Cleve and her husband, Tim, Hanlontown, Iowa; three
step-grandchildren, Amy Christiansen and her husband, Mike, Nevada, Iowa,
Timothy Van Cleve and his wife, Martha, Hanlontown, and Adam Van Cleve,
Hanlontown and several step great-grandchildren.
Karl is preceded in death by his parents; a sister and a brother.

Allene "Fat" Faye Purviance
Hollatz Petersen
Allene "Fat" Faye Purviance Hollatz Petersen, 81,
of Ventura, Iowa died Thursday, Dec. 29, 2005 at her home. A funeral service was
held Monday, Jan. 2, at Redeemer Lutheran Church, Ventura, with the Rev. Daird
Korth officiating. Interment was at Memorial Park Cemetery, Mason City, Iowa.
Memorials my be given to Hospice of North Iowa in her name.
Fat was born July 8, 1924 in Lincoln Township, rural Mason City, Cerro Gordo
County, the twin daughter of John and Neva (Homes) Purviance. She attended rural
school and graduated from Hanlontown High School in 1942.
On Jan. 30, 1943 she married Everette Hollatz in Bethany, Mo. and returned to
Iowa where they started a lifetime of farming. They retired in 1983. Everette
passed away 1989.
In June 1991 she married Alfred "Pete" Petersen. Alfred passed away August 1999.
Fat enjoyed gardening, fishing, playing cards, dancing, cooking, spending time
with her family - especially her great-grandchildren. She was a member of
Redeemer Lutheran Church and Dorcas Society of Ventura. She was involved in Busy
Bee Neighborhood Club and Ventura Gun Club.
Those left to cherish her memory are her children: Connie Hejna and her husband,
Ed, Floyd, Iowa and Joel Hollatz, Centerville, Iowa; six grandchildren, Darcy
Bast and her husband, Dennis, Bob Hejna and his wife, Ranae, all of Floyd,
Joshua Hollatz, Centerville, Iowa, Peter Hollatz, Chicago, Ill, Jessica Hollatz,
Liberty, Kan., Allan Hollatz, Maryville, Mo.; four great-grandchildren, Denise
and Dallas Bast and Bailee and Caleb Hejna; stepchildren Maren Oleson, Penny
Lovell, Allan Petersen and his wife, Cindy and their families; two sisters,
Clara Ball, Prescott, Az. and Opal Coffin, Clear Lake; two brothers-in-law,
Warren Millard, Mason City and Tom "Pete" Hollatz and his wife, Barb, Clear
Lake; as well as many nieces, nephews, other relatives and numerous friends and
her special friend, Howard Oehlert, Clear Lake.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Everette Hollatz; son,
Robert "Bobby" Claire Hollatz; husband, Alfred Petersen; sisters, Lola Cook,
Irene Millard -her twin; brothers, John, Floyd, Jesse, Clyde and Earl in
infancy.

Agnes Amosson
Agnes Amosson, 95, of Clear Lake, Iowa died
Friday, Dec. 30, 2005 at the Oakwood Care Center, Clear Lake. Funeral service
will be held Wednesday Jan. 4, 10:30 a.m., at Zion Lutheran Church, 112 N.4th
St. Clear Lake, with Richard Scott Lay Assistant officiating. Interment will be
in Clear Lake Cemetery. Family suggests memorials to Opportunity Village.
Agnes was born September 20, 1910 in Holmes, Iowa, the daughter of Oscar and
Julia (Berven) Ulstad. She was baptized and confirmed in the Holmes Lutheran
Church. Agnes graduated from Clarion High School in Clarion, Iowa. She married
Glen J. Amosson on Jan. 14, 1933 in Sioux City, Neb. Agnes devoted her life to
her family and friends. She loved to cook and bake.
Agnes was a member of Zion Lutheran Church. She was also in Sing and Sew Club
and the Clear Lake Senior Citizens.
Agnes is survived by two sons, Roger Amosson and his wife, Barbara, Clear Lake,
and Robert Amosson and his wife, Patricia, Rockwell, Iowa; daughter-in-law, Sue
Amosson, Des Moines, Iowa; three granddaughters, Vicky Ernster and her husband
Les, Rochester, Minn., Susan Finnegan and her husband, Mike, Clear Lake, and Amy
Pierce and her husband, Jeff, Rochester; three grandsons, Scott Amosson and his
wife, Vonnie, Clear Lake, Jeremy Amosson, Lake Geneva, Wis. and Aaron Amosson,
New Haven, Conn.; and nine great-grandchildren.
Agnes was preceded in death by her husband, Glen on June 29, 1998; one son, Ron;
her parents, Oscar and Julia Ulstad; two brothers and two sisters

Albert (Al)
Elias Olson
Albert (Al) Elias Olson, age 82, of Belmond,
Iowa, a longtime educator, coach, and school administrator, died Thursday, Dec.
29, 2005, at the Belmond Medical Center Hospice Unit surrounded by his loving
family.
Funeral services were held Monday, Jan. 2, 2006, at Trinity Lutheran Church,
Belmond. The Rev. Rod Hopp will be officiating. Burial with full military honors
provided by the Belmond Honor Guard will be in the Belmond Cemetery.
Those wishing to express their sympathies through memorials may wish to follow
the family's suggestions of the Belmond-Klemme Scholarship II Foundation,
Trinity Lutheran Church Sunday School, Belmond Medical Center, Talbot Belmond
Public Library, or Hospice of Wright County.
Al Olson was born August 25, 1923, in Jewell, Iowa, the son of Albert and Jennie
(Gabrielson) Olson. He was baptized and confirmed in the Bethesda Lutheran
Church in Jewell. Al attended Jewell Public Schools and graduated from Jewell
High School in 1941. He served in the United States Navy during WWII, spending
much of his tenure aboard the USS Biloxi in the South Pacific. Al was united in
marriage to his wife and life partner of over 56 years, Bette Ann Schmedika in
Des Moines, Iowa on Aug. 27, 1949. Following their marriage Al continued his
education at Drake University and graduated with a B.A. Degree in 1951. He spent
a period of time in private business in Jewell. Al accepted and offer to teach,
coach, and be principal at Alexander High School, Alexander, Iowa in 1956. The
school eventually consolidated to form CAL School District with Al remaining in
his role for the first year of transition. A Master's Degree in Education
administration from Colorado State College followed in 1963, after which Al took
the position of Jr. High Principal in the Belmond Community School District for
seven years. His life long passion for education and learning continued with the
completion of a Specialist's Degree in Secondary Education from Iowa State
University in 1972. Al then accepted the leadership role of the Belmond
Community School District serving as Superintendent of Schools for the next 17
years before retirement on June 30, 1987.
Al's life at Trinity Lutheran Church in Belmond was very important to him. He
fulfilled many roles their including teaching 8th grade Sunday School for 15
years, serving two terms as Church Council President, and assisting with
numerous other church activities and events. Al also gave of his time and
talents to the community in many ways. He enjoyed delivering Meals-on-Wheels and
driving the Belmond Care Car, starting after his retirement in 1987 and
continuing until this past summer. He was a member of the Belmond Lions, the
GridIron Club, and the Iowa Association of School Administrators. Al served on
the Belmond Library Board for 17 years. Though he was a man who never cared to
spend much time in the spotlight or receive recognition for his efforts to help
others in his professional and civic roles, this devotion did not go unnoticed.
Al was awarded the Administrator's Award from the Iowa High School Athletic
Association in 1988, Boss of the Year from the Jaycee's in 1982, Honorary B-Club
Award from the BHS Athletic Awards program for being an Outstanding Sports Fan
and Supporter during his career at Belmond Schools, and 1987 Friend of Education
Award from the Belmond Education Association.
Children in general, and his grandchildren in particular, were very special to
Al. If there was a baby in the crowd, they would be held by him. "Papa" had a
very special relationship with his grandchildren. Al and Bette celebrated their
50th Wedding Anniversary with a surprise trip to Norway, a precious and
memorable gift from their children.
Al enjoyed sports of all kinds. He participated in baseball and basketball
thoughout high school and continued to play competitive basketball until he was
over 30. He was never on a losing team. He attended the Drake Relays, as a
spectator for over 40 years. Following retirement, Al continued as a fan of
Belmond High, Nevada High, and Olympia High Schools' athletics.
Al had a life long passion for education and helping others better themselves.
He enjoyed his educational career and many times mentioned the respect and
admiration he had for the people he had worked with. A mutual admiration that
had been mentioned in return by many people who knew him as not only their boss,
but as their friend. Many who knew him will remember Al, for his dedication to
the Belmond Schools and Belmond Community through his passion, unselfishness,
kindness, fairness, patience, deeds for the benefit of others, and above all for
his promotion of excellence in education. His family will always remember him
with fondness as a loving and devoted husband, father, "Papa", brother, uncle,
friend, and foremost their number one fan and supporter on life's journey.
Those left to cherish the memory of his life and legacy include his wife of over
56 years, Bette Olson, Belmond; his children, their spouses, and grandchildren:

He was preceded in death by his parents, Albert and Jennie Olson; sisters,
Marguerite Folkerts and Delores Thorson, and a brother, Clifton Olson. Andrews

Guy Charles
Luscombe
Guy Charles Luscombe, 63, of Klemme, Iowa,
formerly of Des Moines, Iowa, died Thursday, Dec.29, 2005, at the University of
Washington Hospitals in Seattle, Wash.
Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m., Friday, Jan. 6, at Zion Lutheran
Church, 112 North 4th Street, Clear Lake, with the Rev. Derik Yarian
officiating.
According to his wishes his body was cremated.
Guy Charles Luscombe was born on Aug. 7, 1942, in Indianola, Iowa, the son of
Glenn and Laura (Spofford) Luscombe. He attended and graduated from Roosevelt
High School in Des Moines in 1961. He also attended Drake University in Des
Moines. Guy worked with his father helping to recruit students for the College
of Automation. He also sold cars in Des Moines. In 1962, he entered the Air
National Guard and eventually worked in the Civil Service area for 30 years for
the Guard until his retirement as Master Sergeant. After his retirement he
worked for Crescent Chevrolet in Des Moines and also painted cars. Guy was
currently living his retirement, restoring street rods in his custom built dream
shop.
He was united in marriage to Marlys Joanne Neuberger on July 8, 1966, in Des
Moines.
Guy loved cars especially restoring his 1934 Ford Coupe, he also loved people,
was very optimistic, and had a great sense of humor. He also enjoyed
photography, painting, crafts, fishing, wood working, and the out doors, but his
great love and enjoyment was his wife, children, and grandchildren.
He was a life time member of the Iowa Street Rod Association.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Joanne Luscombe of Klemme; three
children, Brent Luscombe and his wife, Michelle, of Thornton, Iowa, Lana
Luscombe of Des Moines, and Ryan Luscombe of Minneapolis, Minn.; four
grandchildren, Whitney, Brandon, Samantha, and Breanna Luscombe; one sister,
Linda Thornton of Des Moines; many nieces, nephews, as well as other relatives
and many friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents.

Richard Robert
Hughes
Richard Robert Hughes, 80, 1315 7th Ave N., Clear
Lake, died Monday, Jan. 2, 2006 at the Manly Care Center, Manly, Iowa. A
celebration of life was held Thursday, Jan. 5, with Mass at St. Patrick's
Catholic Church, Clear Lake, with Msgr. Robert Hogan officiating.
Memorials for Dick Hughes may be given to St. Patrick's Catholic Church or the
Alzheimer's Association.
Dick was born June 5, 1925 in Clear Lake, the son of Melville and Celia (Clack)
Hughes. He graduated from Clear Lake High School in 1943. During school, he
played and lettered in basketball and football. He enlisted in the U.S. Army at
Ft. Des Moines on Feb. 17, 1943. He attended Flight School at Syracuse
University, Primary Flight School at Dos Palos, CA, and Basic and Advanced
Flying at Stockton Field, CA. He left the military with an Honorable Discharge
March 10, 1945 as an Aviation Cadet. He served with the Air Force Reserves until
his Honorable Discharge on May 20, 1955.
Dick married Hester Margaret "Mugs" Larson on Dec. 10, 1946 in Sioux Falls, S.D.
Their children were Marian, Larry and Dennis. Mugs died Dec. 8, 1967.
Dick leased a gas station from Standard Oil for eight years with his brother,
Bud, at 701 N. Shore Dr., starting October 1945. He worked for Allied Mills
(Wayne Feeds) in Mason City and Firestone in Des Moines, Iowa. He started his
career at the Clear Lake Bakery in 1957, where he was a route salesman, retiring
in 1987. In his retirement, he worked part-time for the Clear Lake Waterworks as
a meter reader and then as a courier for Pony Express.
Dick married Joan Dobis Evens on Nov. 7, 1970 at St. Patrick's Catholic Church
in Clear Lake. Dick was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church and a past
member of the Church Council and of the Knights of Columbus. He was a handy man
at home and loved being with his family.
Dick is survived by his wife, Joan Hughes, Clear Lake; children, Marian
McConathy, Yuba City, Calif.; Larry Hughes and his wife, Bonnie, Cedar Falls,
Iowa, Rose Burke, Red Wing, Minn., Benno Evens and his wife, Stacy, Grand Forks,
N.D., Heather Hughes and her husband, Tom McNamar, Coralville, Iowa; eight
grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; sisters, Margaret Doudna, Colorado
Springs, Colo., and Katherine Short, Mason City.
Dick was preceded in death by his parents; son, Dennis Hughes; grandsons, Steve
McConathy and Brian Hughes; a brother, Melville "Bud" Hughes, and sisters
Maryann Hughes and Elizabeth Morrissey.

Lova Brown
Lova Brown, 82, of 2601 S. Lakeview Dr, Clear
Lake, Iowa passed away on Jan. 2, 2006 at the TLC Care Center, Henderson, Nev.
Funeral services will be 11 a.m., Saturday, Jan. 14, at the Ward-Van Slyke
Colonial Chapel, 101 N. 4th St., Clear Lake, Iowa with Pastor Thom Christian
officiating. Visitation will begin 9:30 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home.
Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, Mason City, Iowa.
Lova Mae McLaughlin was born on Jan. 17, 1923 in Waverly, Kan. to Clayton and
Marie (Bever) McLaughlin. Her parents moved the family to a farm near Minburn,
Iowa when she was a young girl, and she graduated from high school at Washington
Township School in Dallas County. She then continued her education at Simpson
College in Indianola, Iowa, and graduated with a Bachelor of Music degree.
Lova loved music. She and her twin sister, Lola, entertained on radio back in
the early 1940's when radio stations still had live entertainment. They were
known as the "Mac Twins", and they sang and played the piano at KFNF,
Shenandoah, Iowa, and later at WNAX in Yankton, S.D. The act broke up when her
sister married and moved away, but Lova continued to work in radio on the office
staff of various stations including KFI in Los Angeles, Calif. While there she
married Robert Grover Brown, originally of Shenandoah, at the Little Country
Church of Hollywood on May 23, 1953.
Shortly after their marriage, Lova and Grover moved to Ames, Iowa, where Grover
had taken a position on the Electrical Engineering faculty at Iowa State
University. They remained in Ames until his retirement in 1989. They then moved
to Clear Lake, where they had maintained a summer home for many years.
While in Ames, Lova became interested in women's four-part harmony music. She
helped organize a Sweet Adelines chorus there in the 1960s, and she both
directed the chorus and sang in a quartet for many years before moving to Clear
Lake. Again, while in Clear Lake, she helped organize a Sweet Adelines group,
and this group eventually evolved into the Music City Sweet Adelines Chorus. In
addition to directing, Lova also arranged Sweet Adelines music and the Music
City Chorus still uses some of her arrangements in its annual shows.
Lova is survived by her husband, Robert Grover Brown; two daughters, Janet
Neumann and Lori Richardson; a very special niece (daughter of her late twin
sister, Lola) Jennifer McLaughlin; two granddaughters; two grandsons; and two
special great-nephews. She also leaves behind many other nieces, nephews, and
cousins.
Lova was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers; and two sisters.
Lova was a wonderful wife, mother, and person. She had many friends in the North
Iowa area as well as Ames. All of her family and friends will miss her very
much.

Christopher Thomas Catania
Christopher Thomas Catania, 34, passed away Dec.
21, 2005 in North Hollywood, Calif.
Chris was born on July 24, 1971 in Van Nuys, Calif. Chris lived and worked in
Thousand Oaks, Calif. most of his life. The photography he took in college
became a hobby. His drums, which he made himself at D.W. Drums, were his
passion. Cars and cooking were his everyday fun.
Chris is survived by his mother, Darlene and step-father, Budd Porter of Apple
Valley, Calif; grandfather, Oscar Davis, of Clear Lake; aunts and uncles, Linda
Smeby, of Rockwell, Iowa, Ron and Rusty Davis, Hanlontown, Iowa, Rosann and
Jerry Fredin, of Wichita, Kan., Jerry and Rosa Catania, of Sherman Oaks, Calif.;
seven cousins and many true loving friends who were his buddies and brothers
always.
He was preceded in death by his father, Thomas Catania.
Funeral services were held Dec. 27 at Pierce Brothers Mortuary Chapel, Thousand
Oaks, Calif. Inurnment was at San Fernando Mission Cemetery, Mission Hills,
Calif., Jan. 5, 2006.

Alice Fisher
Alice Fisher passed away Jan. 7, 2006 at the
Eastern Star Masonic Home in Boone, Iowa. After celebrating her 100th birthday
last month her health declined rapidly. Services will be Monday, Jan. 16, at
10:30 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church in Boone with Rev. Phil Webb
officiating. There will be no visitation. Interment will be in Linwood Park
Cemetery in Boone.

Alice Josephine was born Dec. 15, 1905 in Mount Ayr, Iowa to Jesse and Ethel
Dunning Judson. She graduated from Simpson College and taught in Clear Lake High
School for a year after graduation. In 1948 the Fishers established a summer
home on the south shore of Clear Lake. She spent nearly 50 summers there, where
she enjoyed entertaining her family.
On Dec. 27, 1927 she married Harold L. "Bud" Fisher, and the following year the
couple moved to Boone where her husband coached and taught in the Boone High
School. In 1935, he opened Fisher's Shoe Store, and in later years she would
assist him in the operation of that business.
Three children were born to this union; Robert L. (Frances) of Boone, Alice "Bebe"
Arbuckle of Lawrence, Kan., and David J. (Dorie) of West Des Moines, Iowa. Nine
grandchildren survive; John Fisher, James Fisher, Judson Fisher, Dana McBratney,
David Arbuckle, Jess Arbuckle, Greg Fisher, Anne Triplett, and Amy Wagler, plus
24 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband; her sister, SaraBelle Attey, and a
great-grandson.
Alice was active in community and church affairs. She was a member of Chapter JL,
P.E.O., Junior Monday Study Club, an honorary member of Delta Kappa Gamma, and
the Ames Pi Beta Phi Alum group. For years she was county chairman of the Red
Cross volunteers, and she was recipient of the Everett Brown award for community
service. She taught Sunday School, and served on many church committees, being
honored with life membership in the Methodist Women's organization.
She traveled extensively, visiting five of the continents. Music and the piano
were important in her life, and until a week before she died she was enjoying
playing the piano. She had a great love of the out of doors, and always
commented on the beauty of the trees.

Helen M. Smith
Helen M. Smith, 99, of Belmond, Iowa, died Jan.
5, 2006, at the Belmond Health Care Center. Funeral services were held Tuesday,
Jan. 10 at Dugger Ewing Funeral Home in Belmond. Interment was in Clear Lake
Cemetery.
Helen was born Oct. 31, 1906, on a farm near Beacon, Iowa, the daughter of
Harvey and Nellie Bowen Malone. Her early life was spent on a farm near
Eddyville, Iowa, where she attended an elementary country school and then
Eddyville High School from which she graduated in 1925. While in her teens she
joined the Congregational Church and the Y.W.C.A. For two years following high
school, she was a student at a nursing school in Oskaloosa, Iowa.
Helen was married to Harold L. Smith of Britt, Iowa, on May 1, 1930, in
Oskaloosa, by a Congregational minister. From 1931 to 1951, nine children were
born to this union. The family lived in various locations including Britt, Clear
Lake, Lacona, Pleasantville, Wesley, and Belmond, all in Iowa, as well as
Stewartville, Minn. and Kahoka, Mo. Most of their life was spent on the farm,
where Helen enjoyed working with the soil; she felt her gardening was working
hand in hand with God. She loved the outdoors and all of its wonders. Helen's
life was devoted to caring for her large family, in particular making certain
that they had food on the table. It was important that her children attend
church and school.
In 1972, the couple entered retirement in Belmond, Iowa, where Helen continued
to live after Harold's death in 1979. She has been a resident at the Care Center
in Belmond since October of 1996.
Helen is survived by six daughters: Charlotte Smith and Mildred and Ray
Lowenberg of Belmond, Dorothy Brand and Joan and Bob Dankbar of Clear Lake,
Linda Smith and Kathleen and Tom Godden of Mason City; three sons: Robert and
Mary Smith of Youkon, Okla., Harvey and Susan Smith of Prescott, Az. and Stanley
and Nancy Smith of Stanwood, Wash.; 15 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren,
and many nieces and nephews.
Helen was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Harold; two brothers,
Homer and William Malone; a sister, Ada Hafferman; and one great-grandson,
Anthony Lowenberg.

"Sonny" Spratt Jr.
Jacob E. "Sonny" Spratt Jr., 73, Oklahoma City,
Okla., formerly of Clear Lake, died Monday, Jan. 9, 2006 at the hospital in
Norman, Okla. According to his wishes, his body has been cremated. An Inurnment
will take place this summer at Memorial Park Cemetery, Mason City, Iowa. Local
Memorials may be directed to Judy Spratt at 1200 10th Ave. N., Trlr #3, Clear
Lake, Iowa 50428 in memory of Jacob E. Spratt.
Jacob was born Oct. 1, 1933 in Tulsa, Okla., the son of Jacob Earl and Elsa
"Frankie" (Broyles) Spratt Sr. He was baptized into the Catholic Church. During
his first year the family moved to Iowa and eventually settled in Clear Lake.
Jacob graduated from Clear Lake High School. Following school, he enlisted in
the U.S. Navy, where he served four years as a meteorologist, spending three
years in Trinidad. After an honorable discharge from the Navy he moved back to
Clear Lake where he worked at Plumb Supply in Mason City.
In the early 1980's Jacob moved to Dallas, Texas where he worked as a security
guard. He also worked for the Knights of Columbus as a facility coordinator,
including wedding planner and playing Santa Claus. Due to his health, he retired
in 2005 and moved to Oklahoma City with his brother, Jim.
Jacob loved bowling and enjoyed much success with the sport. He also golfed, a
sport in which Jacob and his brothers loved to compete. He was a member of the
St. Patrick's Catholic Church and the V.F.W. in Clear Lake.
Jacob is survived by a son, Bruce Maingot, Ontario, Canada; brother, James
Spratt and his special friend, Carla, Oklahoma City; sister, Judy Spratt, Clear
Lake; sister-in-law, Karen Spratt, Clear Lake and numerous nieces and nephews.
Jacob was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Donald and Charles and
infant sister.

Hasapopoulos
Anna K. Hasapopoulos, 52, formerly of Mason City
died Tuesday, Jan. 3, 2006 at Rio Hospital, Patras, Greece.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, Jan. 17, at the Holy Transfiguration Greek
Orthodox Church, Mason City, Iowa with the Rev. Joseph Mirowski, officiating.
Burial was in Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery, Mason City.
Anna Konstantinos Hasapopoulos was born on Jan. 1, 1954, at Damakini, Patrus,
Greece. She married Dennis Hasapopoulos on July 31, 1980, at Salmeniko, Greece.
Anna attended school in Greece. Following their marriage Anna and Dennis made
their home in Clear Lake and Mason City. Anna devoted her life to her daughters.
Anna especially enjoyed sharing her Greek heritage with her family and friends,
often hosting a traditional Greek Easter at her home. Friends that came to visit
were treated with a cup of Greek coffee and pastries; rarely did anyone leave
without a loaf of homemade village bread. She was an accomplished seamstress and
gardener.
She is survived by her mother, Irene Bavioli, Greece; two daughters, Vikki
Hasapopoulos and special friend, Matt Abbas, St. Paul, Minn.; Irene Hasapopoulos
and her fiancé, Dan Schrage, Waverly. Iowa; a sister, Aggeliki Triga, Damakini,
Greece; two brothers, Constantinos Bavioli, Kleve, Germany; Dimitris Bavioli,
Salmeniko, Greece; in-laws, Elsie Hasapopoulos, Mason City and Ted (Audrey)
Hasapopoulos, Mason City; along with nieces, nephews, cousins, brothers and
sisters-in-law, and friends.
Anna was preceded in death by her father; husband; and an infant daughter, Sara
Ann Hasapopoulos.

Minnie Mennenga
Funeral services for Minnie Mennenga, Belmond,
Iowa, will be held at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, Jan. 18, at the Immanuel Reformed
Church east of Belmond. Burial will be in the Immanuel Reformed Church Cemetery.
The Rev. Rob Ford will be officiating.
Minnie Mennenga was born July 30, 1911, to Dick and Elizabeth (Kuper) Pals, on a
farm east of Belmond. She attended country school through the eighth grade.
She worked out of the home, being a housekeeper for other area families for a
number of years.
On March 5, 1936, she married Carl Mennenga at the Immanuel Reformed Church
parsonage. The couple farmed for 37 years east of Belmond. They retired and
moved to Belmond in 1973. During their time on the farm their marriage was
blessed with five children.
Minnie was an active member of the Immanuel Reformed Church, where she taught
catechism and was a member of the Ladies' Guild. She was a member of the Senior
Citizens and the Over 60's Club. She enjoyed sewing, crocheting, embroidery, and
playing cards with family and friends. She and Carl enjoyed fishing in Minnesota
several times a year.
Being a loving grandmother, her grandchildren will remember her babysitting and
playing games with them. Her family will always cherish the fond memories of her
homemade pies and cakes.
Those left to cherish her memories are daughters Carol (William) Lockett,
Belmond, and Velda (Gary) Steenblock, Kanawha, Iowa; a son, Douglas (Diana)
Mennenga, Clemmons, N.C.; 10 grandchildren, Kim (Jon) Gifford, Karleen (Mike)
Fournier, Karmen (Josh Maros) Dahl, Kristen (Ken) Paxton, Annette (Mark)
Greenwood, Dawn (Jon) Eckhoff, Lisa (Mike) Ver Helst, Kevin (Shery) Steenblock,
Tammy (Bill) Freerks, and Todd (Dawn) Mennenga; 13 great-grandchildren, Katie
Gifford, Alex Gifford, Merissa Meints, Austin Meints, Drew Dahl, Luke Paxton,
Halie Greenwood, Brooke Greenwood, Grant Eckhoff, Emily Eckhoff, Jacob Ver Helst,
Dalton Mennenga, Danielle Mennenga; four step-grandchildren, Tony Bonjour,
Racheal (Chad) Olson, Brandon Bonjour, and Whitney Bonjour; four
step-great-grandchildren, Justin Fournier, Whitney Fournier, Lukas Maros, and
Liam Maros; and many nieces and nephews.
Minnie was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Carl in 1998; daughters,
Betty Wenzel and infant daughter; great-granddaughter, Morgan; six sisters and
five brothers.

Robert L.
Duregger
Robert L. Duregger passed away Jan. 17, 2006, at
the age of 81. Funeral services were held Saturday, Jan. 21, at Messiah Lutheran
Church, Santa Cruz, Calif. Entombment followed at Chapel of the Chimes in
Hayward, Calif.
Bob was born May 3, 1924, in Thornton, Iowa, and was raised at Clear Lake. He
joined the Army at age 18 and is a WW II veteran. He served in 354th Army Air
Force for three years. Jean and Bob were married in Oakland, Calif. in 1949. He
had been in retail management for 25 years, and lived the last six years in
Santa Cruz County. Bob was a participant of the Cindy Celebration at The
Mansion.
Bob attended Armstrong Business College at Berkeley, Calif., where he received
his bachelor's degree. After college he worked for J.C. Penney's for 22 years
then spent 12 years with his son in the trucking business until his retirement.
Bob was a resident of Hayward, Calif., from 1951 to 1999. Bob worshiped at
Calvary Lutheran Church since 1984 until moving to Santa Cruz where he worshiped
at Messiah Lutheran Church. His favorite past-time was helping people and
traveling.
Mr. Duregger is survived by his sons, David J. Duregger of Knoxville, Tenn. and
Thomas A. Duregger of Garner, Iowa, and his daughter, Linda J. Corwin, of Santa
Cruz. He is also survived by nine nine grandchildren and three
great-grandchildren. Bob also leaves his brothers, Fred Duregger of Newport
News, Calif., Edward Duregger Jr. of Garner, Budd Duregger of Clear Lake and
Larry Borum of Florida and his sisters, Gladys Henn of Clear Lake, Helen
Sorenson of Thornton, and Irene Sorenson of Castro Valley, Calif.
He was preceded in death by a son, Paul Edward, in 1954; brothers, Al Duregger,
Jiggs Duregger and Robert Duregger and his sisters, Mary Avery and Ida Mae Hill.
Family requests remembrances be made to Parkinson's Foundation, American Heart
Association or Bipolar Mental Health Association.

"Frank" Ray Baker
Franklin "Frank" Ray Baker, 84, of Clear Lake,
died Friday, Jan. 20, 2006, at the Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa, in Mason
City, Iowa.
Memorial services were held Tuesday, Jan. 24, at the Zion Lutheran Church, Clear
Lake, with the Rev. Dean Hess officiating.
Franklin Ray Baker was born on Aug. 15, 1921, the son of Ray Miles and Maytie
(Cobb) Baker in rural Clear Lake. He attended and received his elementary
education at Baker's School in Lake Township, graduating from Clear Lake High
School in 1939. Following his high school graduation he farmed with his family
at Baker's Corner east of Clear Lake. In 1942, he worked for the U.S. Government
in Washington D.C. He was united in marriage to Ruth Elaine Jensen on June 20,
1943, at the Zion Lutheran Church in Clear Lake, and to this union two sons were
born, Jon F. Baker and Michael R. Baker. Frank was inducted into the U.S. Army
Air Corps and trained as a tail gunner on a B-24 aircraft, and was retained as
an instructor during World War II. He was honorably discharged as Staff Sgt. in
1946. After his honorable discharge Frank returned to farm with B.F. Baker &
Sons and farmed in the Clear Lake area all his life.
In the early 1970's, Frank and Ruth enjoyed traveling to many parts of the U.S.
He particularly enjoyed his years of travel.
In 1974, he resumed farming with his son, Mike, and family.
Frank and Ruth moved from the farm into Clear Lake in 1980.
He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Clear Lake and also served on various
church, civic, school, and farm related boards, some of them being Lake Township
School Board, Clear Lake School Board, director of the Clear Lake Livestock
Shippers Association Board, and the Farmers Cooperative Board.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Ruth Elaine Baker of Clear Lake; two
sons, Jon Franklin Baker and his wife, Mary Kathryn, of Bloomfield Hills, Mich.
and Michael Ray Baker and his wife, Mary, of Clear Lake; four grandchildren,
Heather Eidt and her husband, John, Jeff Baker, David Baker and his wife, Gina,
and Mark Baker; two great-grandchildren, Elizabeth (Lizzie) and John (Jack)
Eidt; a sister, Madge Brandau of Osage, Iowa as well as other relatives and many
friends.
His parents preceded him in death.

Florence Riggs
Florence Riggs, 86, Clear Lake, died Jan. 20,
2006 at Muse-Norris Hospice of Mason City, Iowa. A memorial service will be held
Sunday, Jan. 29, at the Clear Lake United Methodist Church with the Rev. Jan
Burnett officiating. Memorials may be given to the Clear Lake United Methodist
Church.
Florence Lorraine (Farnham) Riggs was the fifth child of Sarah and Fred Farnham
born in Hewitt, Minn. Florence's father was a minister in the small Iowa
churches of Le Mars, Galt, Lamoille, Farnhamville, and Rowan. Florence graduated
from Rowan High School in 1936. She attended junior college in Hibbing, Minn.
and graduated from the secretarial program. Florence was working at First State
Bank in Webster City, Iowa when she met Robert Riggs at the Webster City EUB
church. Florence and Robert were married March l, 1942 in Ames, Iowa.
The first four years of their marriage was spent moving around to Robert's army
assignments. After the army Robert and Florence resided in Iowa City, Iowa while
Robert completed college.
In 1951 the family moved to Clinton, Iowa where Robert worked at Jane Lamb
Hospital. They lived in Iowa City until 1954. The couple had three children:
Brian, Ruth Ann and Gail.
In June of 1954 Florence and Robert were accepted as missionaries of the
Methodist Church and assigned to Korea. The family's departure was delayed in
Seattle, Wash. to wait for the birth of Eric, who made his appearance in
November 1955. In March of 1956 the family sailed to Seoul, Korea. Robert worked
as administrator to Severance Hospital in the capital Seoul. Florence became
fairly fluent in the Korean language. She worked with widows from the Korean War
and also worked on the staff of the Yonsie Medical College and Severance
Hospital in addition to setting up the house.
In 1968 Robert and Florence completed their mission term and returned to the
U.S. They have since worked and lived in Ames, Clinton, Cedar Rapids, and
Sidney, Iowa and finally retired to Clear Lake in 1985.
Florence was a member of Clear Lake First United Methodist Church and a member
of UMW.
She is survived by her husband, Robert; two children, Brian Riggs and his wife,
Gail, Point of Rocks, M.D. and Gail Meyer and her husband, Lother, Clear Lake,
and six grandchildren, who have blessed her life.
Florence was preceded in death by her parents; all her brothers and sisters, and
her children, Ruth Ann and Eric.

Josephine Rita De La Fuente
Josephine Rita De La Fuente, 2005 1st Ave S.,
Clear Lake, passed away Saturday, Jan. 21, 2006 at Muse-Norris Hospice Inpatient
Unit, Mason City, Iowa. A funeral mass will be held Wednesday, Jan. 25, 10:30
a.m., at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, 1001 9th Ave S., Clear Lake, with Msgr.
Robert Hogan officiating. Interment will be at the Clear Lake Cemetery.
Memorials may be given to the Josephine De La Fuente Muse-Norris Hospice Fund.
Josephine Rita De La Fuente was born Monday, May 21, 1934 in Mason City, the
daughter of Jim and Carmen (Trujello) Osegera. She graduated from Mason City
High School in 1955.
On Dec. 21, 1957 she was united in marriage to Jose I. De La Fuente at Holy
Family Catholic Church in Mason City. They made their home in Clear Lake where
she was a homemaker. She was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church and the
Rebekah Lodge. She enjoyed spending time with her family, cooking, gardening,
and she volunteered at the Village General Store. Josephine went to be with the
Lord on Saturday, Jan. 21, 2006 after a courageous battle with Leukemia, with
her family at her side at the Muse-Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.
Josephine is survived by her husband, Joe, of Clear Lake; three daughters,
Salina Ubben and husband, Jim of Maple Grove, Minn., Ronda Schroader and
husband, Darin, of Lake Mills, Iowa, Dora Yoder and husband, Charles, of Kalona,
Iowa; a son, William De La Fuente, of Clear Lake; two grandchildren, Morgan
Yoder and Nathan Ubben; a step-grandson, Tyler Schroader and three brothers,
Phillip Osegera and wife, Sandy, of Mason City, James Osegaro and wife, Jean, of
Storm Lake, Iowa and Jim Osegera Jr. and wife, Judy, of Mason City.
She was preceded in death by her parents and a grandson, Riley Yoder.

Ottilie Ehresmann
Ottilie Ehresmann, 87, Clear Lake, died Monday,
Jan. 23, 2006, at the Oakwood Care Center, Clear Lake,. She will be inurned at
Elmwood Cemetery, Mason City, Iowa. According to her wishes her body has been
cremated.
Ottilie was born Jan. 19, 1919 in Germany, the daughter of Wlheme and Crolin
Mardon. She was born and raised on a farm in Germany and worked on the family
farm after graduating from high school. At age 19 she married Karl Ehresmann and
came to America at the age of 25. They settled in Belmond, Iowa before moving to
Clear Lake. She worked as a nurse's aid at the Oakwood Care Center for 24 years.
She was a member of Zion Lutheran Church.
She is survived by her sister, Hilda Wandolski, Languerril, Quebec Canada, and
two nieces, Brigitte Wandolski, Varennes, Quebec Canada and Marlene Wandolski,
Prefontaine.
Ottilie was preceded in death by her parents.
