Doris G. Coats Olson
Doris G. Coats Olson, 83, of 1000 N. Eisenhower,
Mason City, Iowa, died Monday, Oct. 28, 2002 at the
Mercy Medical Center - North Iowa, Mason City.
Memorial services with a Celebration of Life were
held Saturday, Nov. 2, at the Willows, 1000 N.
Eisenhower, Mason City, with the Rev. Jeff Ungs of
Galilean Lutheran Church, Clear Lake, Iowa
officiating. Family suggests memorials to Doris G.
Olson Memorial Fund. Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel,
101 N. 4th St., Clear Lake, was in charge of services.
Doris was born July 12, 1919 in Wilson County,
Kansas, the daughter of John Wesley and Opal A.
(Polson) Coats. She graduated from Storm Lake High
School in 1936 where she played basketball.
She married Donald L. Olson on Oct. 19, 1941 in
LakeView, Iowa. She worked in an airplane factory in
Buffalo, N. Y. during WWII and traveled to meet her
sailor husband when he was in port from Norfolk, Va.
to San Francisco and San Diego, Calif.
They moved back to Sac City, Iowa, where they lived
and raised their three daughters. In 1972 they moved
to West Des Moines, Iowa where they lived until 1997
when they moved to the Willows in Mason City.
Doris especially enjoyed spending time with her
daughters and families, having coffee time and gabfest
with her friends at the Willows, and playing bridge
and socializing when living in Sac City.
Doris was a member of St. Paulıs Lutheran Church,
Sac City, Windsor Heights Lutheran Church and Galilean
Lutheran Church.
Doris will be sadly missed by her three daughters,
Sonnee A. Steveson and her husband, Ron, Ventura,
Iowa, Tamara J. Beschen, Seattle, Wash. and Laura J.
Olson, Decorah, Iowa; six grandchildren, Derek
Steveson, Phoenix, Az., Jennifer Steveson, Phoenix, Az.,
Brooke Beschen, Seattle, Wash., Peter Vanney, Samuel
Vanney and Paul Vanney, Decorah, Iowa; brother-in-law,
Charles Olson, and his wife, Phyllis, Sac City, Iowa;
and nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers,
Wayne and Eugene Coats; two sisters, Beverly Goodnight
and Phyllis Bly and her husband, Don, who passed away
in May of this year.
Dick Weaver
Dick Weaver 62, of 1507 N. 23rd St., Clear Lake,
Iowa died Friday, Nov. 1, 2002 at his home in Clear
Lake. Funeral services were held Monday, Nov. 4, at
Zion Lutheran Church, Clear Lake, with the Rev. Kermit
Roisen officiating. Interment was in the Clear Lake
Cemetery. Family suggests memorials to the Richard
Weaver Memorial fund.
Richard was born May 13, 1940 in Mason City, Iowa,
the son of Earl ³Bud² and Irene Helen (Bell) Weaver.
He attended Clear Lake High School. Following high
school he worked at the Clear Lake Bakery.
He married Nadine Slagle on April 12, 1959 at the
Clear Lake United Methodist Church. They moved to Ft.
Dodge where he drove for Sunbeam Bread.
They moved back to Clear Lake in 1970 when he
became a route driver for Clear Lake Bakery. He drove
the Emmetsburg route until 1997, when he took over the
Clear Lake route and ran it until his retirement in
May 2002 due to ill health.
Dick enjoyed hunting, fishing, riding his
motorcycle, old cars, camping with his family and
grandchildren, woodworking and he was a Rusty Wallace
NASCAR fan. He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church.
Dick is survived by his wife, Nadine Weaver, Clear
Lake; six children, Lanette Lauritzen and her husband,
Bart, Clear Lake, Scott Weaver and his wife, Heidi,
Tempe, Az., Lisa Glidden and her husband, Mark, Clear
Lake, Michelle Weaver, Clear Lake, Richard Weaver Jr.
and his wife, Laura, Clear Lake, and Nicky Froning and
her husband, Jamie, Nora Springs, Iowa; thirteen
grandchildren, Caitlin Lauritzen, Brandon Weaver,
Alyssa Weaver, Jace Weaver, Aspen Weaver, Rhys
Glidden, Trey Weaver, Chelsea Weaver, Tyler Weaver,
Quincy Weaver, Chase Froning, Skyler Froning and
Harley Froning; one great-grandchild, Drake Weaver; a
brother, Roger Weaver and his wife, Mary, Omaha, Neb.;
and his father-in-law, Harold Slagle, Garner, Iowa.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother,
Bobby Weaver; and his mother-in-law, Edna Slagle.
Leland Francis Weaver
Leland Francis Weaver, 68, died Saturday Nov. 2,
2002 at St. Maryıs Hospital, Rochester, Minn.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, Nov. 5, at the
Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, Clear Lake, with the
Rev. Dennis Ganz officiating. Interment was in the
Clear Lake Cemetery with Military Honors by the Clear
Lake VFW. His family suggests memorials to the Leland
Frances Weaver memorial fund.
Leland was born in Castalia, Iowa the son of
Claude and Ruth
(Schroeder) Weaver. He attended school in
Castalia. He served in the United States Army
following high school.
He moved to Mason City following the service and
drove truck for Zanios Produce in Mason City. Leland
married Linda Miller on Nov. 19, 1968 in Nora Springs,
Iowa.
Leland enjoyed fishing, collecting John Deere toy
tractors and especially being with his family.
He will be sadly missed by his wife, Linda Weaver,
Clear Lake; daughter, Julie Weaver; grandchildren,
Shad and Tyler Weaver; two sisters, Jane Kotz, Mason
City, Iowa and Marlys Kramer, Clear Lake; and several
nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and his
son, David Weaver.
Robert James ³Jim² Wilson
Robert James ³Jim² Wilson, 86, Clear Lake, died
Monday, Nov. 4, 2002 at the Good Shepherd Health
Center, Mason City, Iowa. Funeral services are
tentively set for Thursday, Nov. 7, 2 p.m., at
Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, Clear Lake. The Rev.
Dennis Ganz will be officiating. Interment will be
held at the Clear Lake Cemetery. Visitation will be
held from noon until the time of the service.
Memorials may be given to the Robert J. Wilson
Memorial Fund.
Robert was born Sept. 27, 1916, the son of Fred E.
and Virgie (Potter) Wilson in Goodell, Iowa. Jim
married Lois M. Kennedy, on Feb. 17, 1939 in Mason
City, Iowa. He farmed south of Ventura and later
operated Jimıs Restaurant in Crystal Lake, Iowa. He
then went to work for Uland Brothers and did road
construction for 25 years. Jim retired and moved
south of Clear Lake, where he raised cattle and junked
scrap to keep busy. He liked to go hunting, fishing,
trapping and spending time visiting at the V.F.W. and
Ellyıs. Jim loved spending time with his
great-grandson, Mike, and taught him how to drive the
lawn mower. He liked telling Mike funny stories.
Jim is survived by his grandson, Doug D. Wilson,
Clear Lake; great-grandson, Mike D. Wilson, Clear
Lake; a brother, Bill Wilson and his wife, Elsie,
Ventura, Iowa; and a sister Marie Hamann, Ventura.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents; wife,
Lois; daughter, Charlene Wilson; son, Roger Dean
Wilson; three brothers and two sisters.
Jack Lowry
Jack Lowry, 68, of 4144 South Shore Drive, Clear
Lake, Iowa, died Saturday, Nov. 2, 2002 at Hospice of
North Iowa in Mason City.
A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday,
Nov. 9, at Washburn-McReavy Funeral Home, 5000 W. 50th
St. at Highway 100, Edina, Minn.
Memorials may be made in lieu of flowers.
Jack was born Aug. 19, 1934 in Scranton, Penn., the
son of Bert and Catherine (Cook) Lowry. He was
educated in Scranton and began his business career
there. His career eventually brought him to the
Midwest and he had several business interests in the
Twin Cities. In 1995, he moved his family to Clear
Lake, Iowa while continuing a consulting business in
St. Paul, Minn.
He was united in marriage to Jacqueline Archer at
the Calhoun Beach Club in Minneapolis, Minn., on May
31, 1987.
Jackıs biggest delight was being a father. He also
loved listening to classical music, especially Mozart,
golfing, flying his own plane, and reading.
He is survived by his wife, Jacqueline, and their
two daughters, Mackenzie and Adrienne Lowry, all of
Clear Lake; a daughter, Eileen Connors (Tom), of
Wyoming, Minn.; a son, Ron Lowry (Julie), of Andover,
Minn., a son, John Lowry (Sandy), of Clear Lake; and
their mother, Jane Francis Lowry; grandchildren, Jack
Lowry Connors, Stephanie, Samantha, Sherry, Amanda,
Kim and Katie Lowry; three great-grandchildren;
sisters and brother, Lorraine Delmonte ( Del), of
Colorado Springs, Colo., Catherine Dudick (Bob), of
Scranton, Penn. and Thomas Lowry (Carol), of Wichita
Falls, Texas; father and mother-in-law, Bill and
Connie Archer, of Story, Wyo.; sister-in-law,
Geraldine Larson (Dave) and family, of River Falls,
Wis., and numerous friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and his
brother, Bert Lowry.

Charles Thomas Campbell
Charles Thomas Campbell, 77, of Alexander, Iowa,
died Friday, Nov. 8, 2002 at the Good Shepherd Care
Center.
His funeral service was held Sunday, Nov. 10, at
the United Methodist Church, Clear Lake, with the Rev.
Jan Burnett officiating. A graveside service was held
the same day at the Alexander Cemetery, where military
honors were conducted by the American Legion Post
#0658 of Latimer. Memorials may be directed to the
family of Charles Campbell to be distributed between
Hospice of North Iowa and Good Shepherd Health Care
Center.
Charles was born Aug. 9, 1925 in Mifflin County,
Penn., a son of Samuel J. and Ethel May (Treweek)
Campbell. He entered into service in the United
States Navy on Aug. 5, 1943 and served during World
War II on a PT boat in the Philippines. He was
honorably discharged on March 10, 1946 and became a
member of the Ancient Order of the Deep. He was duly
initiated into the Solemn Mysteries of the Deep,
having crossed the Equator Aboard the USS Boots.
Charles was united in marriage to Helen Mae Perkins on
March 29, 1946 at the Bethany Lutheran Church in
Seattle, Wash. They lived in
Alexander, Iowa from 1961 until 1995. Charles
worked as a custodian for
the Alexander School District for many years. In
1974, he began work in maintenance for the Iowa
Department of Transportation at the Latimer Garage.
Charles was an active member of the American Legion
Post #0658 in Latimer and was a volunteer fireman for
many years.
Charlie is survived by five children and their
spouses, Gary and Bev Campbell of Cresco, Iowa, Karen
and Craig Bartholomew of Mason City, Iowa, Jeanne
Yerman of Las Vegas, N.V., Jerry and Jean Campbell of
Clear Lake, and Don and Rona Campbell of Latimer; 14
grandchildren, Lee Campbell, Ian and his wife, Sarah
Campbell, Stephanie Marker, Chad and his wife, Melissa
Bartholomew, Krista and Michelle Bartholomew,
Michelle, Paul, Monica, Melissa, and Pamela Yerman,
Amanda and Valerie Campbell, and Joe and Janae
Campbell; two great-grandchildren, James Yerman and
Blane Bartholomew; five sisters-in-law and two
brothers-in-law.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife,
Helen, in August 1995; one brother; two sisters; a
son-in-law, James Yerman; one sister-in-law and four
brothers-in-law.
Anna Mae Schmitz
Anna Mae Schmitz, 84, of Jesup, Iowa, died Tuesday,
Nov. 5, 2002, at West Village Care Center,
Independence, Iowa, following a lengthy illness. She
was born May 24, 1918, in Independence, Iowa, the
daughter of Henry Herman Luloff and Clara Irene
(Stoner) Luloff.
Funeral services were held Friday, Nov. 8, at the
American Lutheran Church, Jesup, with Pastor Wayne H.
Hagen officiating. Music was by Mrs. Shirley Bergman,
organist and Mr. John Bergman, soloist. Honorary
pallbearers were Norman Stoner, Dan Stoner, Wesley
Stoner, and Dwight Stoner. Pallbearers were Robert
Hampton, Matthew Hampton, Steven Hanson, Gregory
Hanson, Timothy Hanson, Todd Hanson and Michael
Schmitz. Burial was at the Brandon Cemetery, Brandon,
Iowa.
Memorials will be directed to Cedar Valley Hospice
and to West Village Care Center both in Independence,
Iowa.
Anna Mae graduated from Independence High School in
1936. On May 30, 1936, she was united in marriage to
LeRoy Hanson in Independence. They later divorced. On
Jan. 29, 1949, she was united in marriage to Donald
Francis Schmitz at the Little Brown Church, Nashua,
Iowa. He preceded her in death on Nov. 7, 1985. Anna
Mae retired from the Mental Health Institute in
Independence in 1983, where she had worked as a
nurse's aid. She was a member of the American Lutheran
Church in Jesup.
Mrs. Schmitz is survived by one daughter, Shirley
Hampton, of Jesup; four sons, Gene (Myrt) Hanson and
James (Julie) Hanson both of Clear Lake; Edwin "Bud"
(Diane) Hanson and Stephen "Steve" (Barb) Schmitz,
both of Waterloo, Iowa; 14 grandchildren, 26
great-grandchildren and one
great-great-grandson. She was preceded in death by
her husband,
Donald; her parents; and one great -granddaughter,
Kaitlin Hanson.

Brian M. Hedges
Brian M. Hedges, 43, of 112 12th Pl. S., Clear
Lake, died Nov. 6, 2002 at Mercy Medical Center North
Iowa, Mason City, Iowa, due to injuries from a car
accident.
Memorial services will be Tuesday, Nov. 12, at the
Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, Clear Lake, with the
Rev. Rory Synoground officiating.

Brian was born March 20, 1959 in Windom, Minn., the
son of Marvin ³Bud² and Betty (Wood) Hedges. He
graduated from Windom High School in 1977.
Brian started working for Unisys in Jackson, Minn.
and then transferred to Clear Lake and worked for them
until their closing. He worked for Target in Mason
City at the time of his accident.
He enjoyed fishing, model cars, slot car racing and
going to coffee at Dennyıs.
Brian will be sadly missed by his parents, Bud and
Betty Hedges, Clear Lake; a daughter, Michelle Hedges
and her fiancé, Michael Lollar, Clear Lake; his
grandson, Nathan Michael Lollar; two sisters, Linda
Nielsen and her husband, Robert, St. Peter, Minn. and
Mary Jo Nath and her husband, Dennis, Mitchell, S.D.;
and nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents and
two nephews.
Gary J. Meehlhause
Gary J. Meehlhause, 62, of 2605 S. Lakeview Dr.,
Clear Lake, died Tuesday, Nov. 5, 2002 at his home.
His funeral service was held Friday, Nov. 8, at Zion
Lutheran Church, Clear Lake, with the Rev. Dean Hess
and Rev. Kermit Roisen officiating. Ward-Van Slyke
Colonial Chapel was in charge of arrangements.
Interment was at the Clear Lake Cemetery. Memorials
may be given to the Gary J. Meehlhause Memorial Fund.
Gary was born Jan. 16, 1940, in Cherokee, Iowa, the
son of Louis and Adelia (Kracht) Meehlhause. He was
united in marriage to Vivian Groe on April 19, 1969.
Of this union came what he considered his greatest
contribution, his son, Mark.
Gary graduated from Sheffield High School and Mason
City Junior College and attended Wartburg College in
Waverly. He served in the National Guard Reserves
while in high school. He had been associated with
Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance Company since
November, 1961, and during his career was involved
with the North Iowa Association of Life Underwriters,
the Clear Lake Chamber of Commerce and the Clear Lake
Economic Development Corporation and was active in
numerous fund raising activities in the community.
Gary enjoyed serving people in his work, traveling
with his wife and son, most recently in his motor
home, baseball, fishing and spending time with family
and friends.
He was appreciated for his candor, his integrity,
his sense of humor and his caring.
Gary is survived by his wife, Vivian; his son,
Mark, of Dallas, Texas; his sister, Rita Lodge McBeain
and her husband, Marvin, Mesa, Az.; nieces and nephews
and their families.
Gary was preceded in death by his parents.
Byron Dean Smeby
Byron Dean Smeby, 62, of Rockwell, Iowa, died
Friday, Nov. 8, 2002, after a long courageous battle
with cancer, surrounded by his family, at the
Muse-Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, Nov. 12, at the
United Methodist Church in Rockwell, with Rev. Bruce
Wittern officiating. Burial was at the Brush Point
Cemetery, rural Hanlontown, Iowa.

Byron Dean Smeby was born on June 25, 1940, on the
Smeby family farm, north of Hanlontown. He was the son
of John O. and Olga (Sorensen) Smeby.
He attended rural country schools near Hanlontown,
graduating from Hanlontown High School in 1959. He
was united in marriage to Linda Davis on June 9, 1963,
at the United Methodist Church in Clear Lake, and was
blessed with three loving sons. Byron loved farming
all his life. He began farming in 1968 and farmed
until the present in the Klemme and Rockwell area. He
especially enjoyed his Black Angus cow calf herd, and
having John Deere equipment for his farming
operations. His love of the land and farming has been
handed down to his sons, who will continue in their
fatherıs legacy for many generations to come.
Byron loved the land and farming, but his great
love and enjoyment was his family and grandchildren.
He was a former member of the Immanuel Reformed
United Church of Christ, in Klemme, and presently a
member of the United Methodist Church in Swaledale.
Left to cherish his memory is his wife, Linda, of
Rockwell; three sons, Terry Smeby and his wife, Janie,
and their boys, Jordan and Collin of Mason City, Iowa;
Todd Smeby and his wife,Tracy, and their girls, Ashley
and Brielle of Klemme, Iowa; and Troy Smeby of
Rockwell and Katie Pederson of Swaledale; four
brothers, Jr. Smeby and his wife, Ruth, of Mason City,
Royden Smeby and his wife, Verna, of Joice, Wally
Smeby, of Mason City, and Glenn Smeby and his wife,
Janet, of Mason City; a sister, Viola Jurasek and her
husband, Jerry, of Mason City; his father-in-law,
Oscar Davis of Clear Lake; six aunts and uncles; 21
nieces and nephews; as well as other relatives and
many friends.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Olga, in
1967, his father, John, in 1982, a sister-in-law,
Janice Smeby, in 1998, one niece and one nephew.
Leo ³Lee² F. Ewen
Leo ³Lee² F. Ewen, 85, 104 S. 9th St., Clear Lake,
died Nov. 16, 2002, at the Muse-Norris Hospice
Inpatient Unit, Mason City, Iowa. Funeral services
will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 20, at St.
Patrickıs Catholic Church, 1001 S. 9th St., Clear
Lake, with Msgr. Robert Hogan officiating. Interment
will be held at St. Patrickıs Catholic Cemetery,
Dougherty, Iowa at 1:30 p.m.
Memorials may be given to Leo F. Ewen Memorial
Fund.
Leo was born July 24, 1917, near Dougherty, Iowa,
to Jacob and Helen
(McKigney) Ewen. He attended grade school in rural
Floyd County and graduated from St. Patrickıs High
School in Dougherty in 1934. Leo helped on the family
farm until entering the service in June, 1941. He was
discharged in Sept. 1945, after serving three years in
the European Theater with the 8th and 9th Air Forces.
After returning home, he farmed in the Dougherty area
until 1954 when he moved to Clear Lake.
Leo was married to Doris Hogan on June 18, 1949 at
St. Patrickıs Catholic Church, Dougherty, by the Rev.
Paul Maquire. He was a member of St. Patrickıs
Catholic Church, Clear Lake, Knights of Columbus
Council 106, Mason City, Teamsters Local 828 of Mason
City, American Legion Post 354, Dougherty, and V.F.W.
Post 4868, Clear Lake.
Leo retired from Associated Milk Producers
(formerly State Brand
Creameries) in Mason City in 1980 and was then
custodian at St. Patrickıs Church in Clear Lake until
1991.
Leo is survived by his wife, Doris Ewen, Clear
Lake; two daughters, Jane Hitsman and her husband,
Dennis, Boone, Iowa and Mary Ewen and Michael Suniga,
Longmont, Colo.; two grandchildren, Lisa and Nicholas
Hitsman, Boone; three sisters, Johanna Jansen, Helen
Engels and her husband, Emil, and Agnes Foxen, all of
Rockford, Iowa; a sister-in-law, Lillian Ewen, Nora
Springs, Iowa; a brother-in-law, Vern Merfeld; Greene,
Iowa; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Leo was preceded in death by his parents; one
sister, Kathryn Merfeld; three brothers, Walter,
Clement and Edward; and a brother and sister in
infancy.

Winfred ³Winnie² Knutson
Winfred ³Winnie² Knutson, 86, of Red Oak, Iowa,
formerly of the Thornton, Iowa, area, died Nov. 14,
2002, at the Creighton University Medical Center in
Omaha, Neb. at the age of 86 years, 7 months and 24
days.
Funeral services were held at Zion Lutheran Church
in Clear Lake, on Tuesday, Nov. 19, with the Rev. Dean
Hess officiating. Graveside services
were at the Pleasant Valley Cemetery, Swaledale,
Iowa.

Winfred Marie Knutson, the daughter of Hans and
Anna (Anderson) Pahus, was born March 21, 1916 in
Humbolt, Iowa.
Winnie was raised and graduated from high school in
Cerro Gordo County, Iowa. She attended Iowa State
Teachers College in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. She then
attended Northwest University in Missouri graduating
with a degree in elementary education. Winnie was
united in marriage to H. Everette Knutson on Aug. 4,
1945 in Des Moines, Iowa. They moved to Red Oak, Iowa
in 1957.
Winnie taught grade school in Iowa for 37 years.
She was a member of the Bethlehem Lutheran Church.
Winfred was preceded in death by her parents; an
infant daughter, Cheryl Anne; her husband, Everette on
Jan. 23, 1967; a brother, Jennings Pahus; and a
sister, Virginia Moehnke.
Winfred is survived by her son, Joel Knutson and
his wife, Julie, of Bellevue, Neb.; grandsons,
Christopher Knutson and Andrew Knutson, both of
Bellevue; one brother, Donald Pahus of Hollywood,
Fla.; several nieces, nephews, other relatives and a
host of friends.

Linda A. Weaver
Linda A. Weaver, 53, of Lakeside Acres, Clear Lake,
died Saturday, Nov. 16, 2002, at the Muse Norris
Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City, Iowa.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, Nov. 19, at
Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, Clear Lake, with the
Rev. Dennis Ganz officiating. Interment was in the
Clear Lake Cemetery.
Linda was born Feb. 7, 1949, in Mason City, Iowa
the daughter of Gordon and Phyllis (Mostrom) Miller.
She attended school in Mason City. Following high
school she worked at Buehlerıs Café.
Linda married Leland ³Dick² Weaver on Nov. 19,
1967, in Nora Springs, Iowa. They moved to Arizona
and lived there for two years and then moved
to the Clear Lake area. She worked for Libby
Owensıs until they closed and then worked at Mach III
in the shipping department and at the Town Pump in
Clear Lake.
Linda enjoyed sewing, making dolls, baking pies,
cookies and breads for everybody, visiting with her
neighbors, grilling, fishing and watching western
movies.
Left to cherish her memories will be her daughter,
Julie Weaver, Waterloo, Iowa and her friend, Rudy;
four grandchildren, Shad and Tyler Weaver, and Alicia
and Tomaz Garcia; her sister, Carol Tatro and her
husband, Kaven, Clear Lake; three brothers, Gordon
Miller and his wife, Betty, Apache Junction, Az., Mike
Miller and his wife, Dena, Gilbert, Az. and Mark
Miller and his wife, Sally, Mesa, Az. and several
nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband;
and one son, David.
William H. (Buster) Cooper
William H. (Buster) Cooper, 87, of 7067 275th Way,
Clear Lake, died Thursday, Nov. 14, 2002, at his
home.
Funeral services were held Monday, Nov. 18, 11
a.m., at Zion Lutheran Church, Clear Lake, with the
Rev. Kermit Roisen and the Rev. Ed Bard, Chaplin of
Hospice of North Iowa, officiating. Graveside
services were at Madison Township Cemetery, Forest
City, Iowa. Family suggests memorials to Zion
Lutheran Church or Hospice of North Iowa.
Buster was born April 18, 1915 in Kanawha, Iowa,
the son of John and Johanna (Benniga) Cooper. He
graduated from Kanawha High School in 1934.
He married Muriel Larson on Sept. 20, 1937 in
Kanawha. They farmed in the Kanawha and Ventura
area.
He worked for Ventura Schools as custodian and bus
driver for ten years and at the end of each school
year he would treat his kids on the bus to ice cream
at his house. In 1967 they moved to Forest City where
he worked at Winnebago Industries retiring in 1977.
They moved to Mountain Home, Ark., living there until
1986, when they moved to Clear Lake.
He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church. He
enjoyed being outdoors,
his garden, growing flowers, his special cat,
Cuddles, and especially spending time with his family.
Left to cherish his memory is his wife, Muriel
Cooper, Clear Lake; two children, Wayne Cooper and his
wife, Jean, Des Moines, Iowa and Vicki Anderson and
her husband, William, Clear Lake; six grandchildren,
Gregory Cooper, Oskaloosa, Iowa, Michelle Lane, Omaha,
Neb., Kimberly Cooper, Des Moines, Iowa, Chad Willis,
Chicago, Ill., Stephanie Willis, Ames, Iowa and Brent
Willis, Clear Lake; three great-grandchildren, Jamie,
Katie and Emily and one sister, Gertrude Knoll and her
husband, Bud, Mason City, Iowa.
He was preceded in death by his parents; son,
Dennis Cooper; seven brothers, Ubbo, Arthur, Gratus,
George, John, Albert and James Cooper; and three
sisters, Annie Abbas, Hattie Smidt and Grace Hoel.
Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, Clear Lake, was in
charge of arrangements.
Joseph Patrick Krinhop
Joseph Patrick Krinhop, beloved newborn son of Mark
and Jennifer (Stealy) Krinhop, died peacefully in his
parentıs arms on his birthday, Nov. 13, 2002.
Services were held Monday, Nov. 18, 10 a.m., at St.
Peters, 6730 Nicollet Ave., South Richfield,
Minneapolis.
He is survived by his brothers, Max and Samuel;
grandparents, Jeffrey and Mary Stealy of Clear Lake,
and Michael and Rita Krinhop of Minneapolis, Minn.;
great grandparents, Leo and Lou Stealy of Clear Lake,
and Warren and Marie Nitzschke of Waterloo, Iowa, and
Doug and Lois Dodge of Minneapolis;
great-great-grandmother, Tillie Harris of Guttenberg,
Iowa; uncles and aunts Tom and Heather Morin, Casey
and Teresa Schlichting, and Patrick Krinhop, as well
as many great uncles and aunts and numerous loving
cousins and friends.
Although he could only stay with us a very short
time, his memory will live forever.
Lewis Charles ³Chuck² Lindgren
Lewis Charles ³Chuck² Lindgren 56, of 902 North
Shore Dr., Clear Lake, died at his home Tuesday, Nov.
19, 2002.
Memorial Services were held Friday, Nov. 22, at
Zion Lutheran Church, 112 N. 4th St., Clear Lake, with
the Rev. Kermit Roisen officiating. Inurnment will be
held at a later date.
The family of Lewis Charles ³Chuck² Lindgren has
requested that memorial contributions be made to the
Lewis Charles Lindgren memorial fund, in his memory.
Lewis Charles ³Chuck² Lindgren was born on Oct. 19,
1946, in Mason City, Iowa, the son of Oliver A. and
Clara (Metcalf) Lindgren. He graduated from Arnolds
Park High School in 1964, and earned his B.A. degree
in English in 1968. He was united in marriage to
Nancy Freeburg on Aug. 26, 1967 at Arnolds Park,
Iowa. Chuck also earned his Masterıs Degree in school
administration in 1975 at the University of South
Dakota. After completing his schooling he taught 10th
grade English in Hawarden, Iowa. In 1976, he became
vice principal in the Le Mars Community School until
1983 when they moved to Charles City where he owned a
Sears Franchise store. Upon moving to Clear Lake in
1986, he taught classes in economics at Buena Vista
and N.I.A.C.C. in Mason City, until 1991. From 1992
through 1994 he worked as a sales representative for
Gateway computers, and in 1995 until the time of his
death he worked as the safety and transportation
director at Opportunity Village in Clear Lake.
He enjoyed photography, fishing, boating, cars, and
Harley Davidson motorcycles, but his great love and
enjoyment was his family and grandchildren.
He was a member of the United Methodist Church in
Clear Lake, and was a former member of the First
United Methodist Church in Charles City.
Left to cherish his memory is his wife, Nancy
Lindgren, of Clear Lake; his children, Andrea Baltzell
and her husband, John, of Eden Prairie, Minn., and
Erik Lindgren and his wife, Dawn, of Osage; two
grandchildren, Morgan and Lauren Baltzell of Eden
Prairie, as well as other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Dr. Harley Arnold Janson
Dr. Harley Arnold Janson, 90, Clear Lake, died
Saturday, Nov. 23, 2002, at the Mercy Medical
Center-North Iowa in Mason City.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Nov.
27, at Zion Lutheran Church in Clear Lake, with the
Rev. Kermit Roisen officiating. Burial will be in the
Norway Township Cemetery near Belmond, Iowa.
Visitation was Tuesday evening at Ward-Van Slyke
Colonial Chapel, and one hour prior to service time on
Wednesday at the church.
Dr. Harley Arnold Janson was born on Jan. 28, 1912,
on a farm near Goldfield, Iowa, the fourth of 10
children, to Hjalmar and Anna (Enge) Janson. He was
proud of his Norwegian heritage. He attended and
received his elementary education at a rural country
school near Goldfield, and
graduated from Clarion High School in Clarion,
Iowa. Harley also graduated from the University of
Toronto with a degree in Veterinary medicine in 1938.
He was united in marriage to Helen Henrickson on Sept.
12, 1940, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa.
She preceded him in death on Nov. 17, 1990. After
graduating from the University of Toronto, he moved to
Thornton, Iowa, and practiced veterinary medicine
until his retirement in 1966. After his retirement he
continued his farming operations in the North Iowa
area and moved to Clear Lake, shortly thereafter.
He was united in marriage to Harriet Gorkowski on
May 1, 1993, at Zion Lutheran Church in Clear Lake.
He enjoyed working, farming, fishing, playing
Bridge, cribbage, pinochle, traveling to Russia,
Norway and throughout the continental United States.
He was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church in
Clear Lake, and during his early years was very active
in the community of Thornton.
Left to cherish his memory is his wife, Harriet
Janson, of Clear Lake; three children, Barbara Janson
and her husband, Arthur Hilsinger, of Boston, Mass.,
Kathleen Quinlan and her husband, David, of Jupiter,
Fla., and Sharon Olson and her husband, Duane, of
Tacoma, Wash., and Harrietıs daughter, Cheryl Millard,
of St. Paul, Minn.; five grandchildren, Mona Ellison
and her husband, Donald, of Seattle, Wash., Ann
Shallenberger of Boston, Mass., Remy, Victoria, and
Carry Lee Gomez all of Tacoma, Wash., and Harrietıs
two grandchildren, BJ and Mari Millard, both of St.
Paul; a brother, Edgar Janson of Belmond; three
sisters, Marjorie Holzbaur of San Diego, Calif.,
Evelyn Leffingwell of Alexandria, Va., and Anna Elaine
Kane of Westgate, Iowa; as well as many other
relatives and friends.
Besides his first wife, Helen, he was also preceded
in death by his parents, and five brothers, Tolford,
Paul, who died in infancy, Kenneth, Eldon and Joel
Janson.
Dustin ³Dusty² Palmer
Dustin ³Dusty² Palmer 16, of 714 N. 7th St., Clear
Lake, died at his home Thursday, Nov. 21, 2002.
Funeral Services were held Tuesday, Nov. 26, at the
Evangelical Free Church, 1310 Highway 18 West, Clear
Lake, with Pastors Randy Vaage and Dave Wiersbe
officiating. Interment will be at the Clear Lake
Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Dustin Palmer
Memorial Fund.
Dustin was born May 28, 1986 in Mason City, Iowa.
He attended Harding Elementary School in Mason City
until the sixth grade prior to moving to Clear Lake in
1997. Dustin was a junior at Clear Lake High School
at the time of his death. Dustin really enjoyed being
in school with his many friends as was evident with
his many activities. Dustin was the Clear Lake High
School wrestling manager, and manager of the
crosscounty team. He was a member of the concert
choir, Base Youth Group, DeMolay North Iowa Chapter,
Heart Connection Cancer Camp, and a participate in
Relay For Life. He had received the Giving your Best
Award and the Evening Lions Achiever Award. He was
also on the Clear Lake High School honor roll. Dustin
always found something good in everyone. He also
enjoyed video games, watching football, camping and
fishing. When he would go to Rochester he would always
want to meet the new patients and see what he could do
to help in their care.
Dustin appreciated how people would come over and
visit him. He was a member of the Evangelical Free
Church in Clear Lake.
Dustin is survived by his parents, Jayne and Randy
Bitker, Clear Lake; a brother, Adam Palmer, Clear
Lake; paternal grandparents, DuWayne and Neva Bitker,
Mason City; maternal grandmother, Phyllis Wilhite,
Mason City; maternal grandfather, Marvin Wilhite,
Apache Juction, Az.; paternal uncles and aunts, Dan
and Sally Bitker, Garner, Iowa; Ron Bitker, Clear
Lake; maternal uncles and aunts, Mark and LaVonn
Dirks, Belmond, Iowa; Lonna Knutson, Mount Pleasant,
Iowa; Lori Carter, Petersberg, Ark.; David Braner,
Mason City; Doug and Cathy Braner, Casselberry, Fla.;
Jim and Helen Wilhite, Boone, Iowa; Dave Wilhite,
Apache Junction, Az.; lots of nieces and nephews; many
special friends; and Hersey and Hugs, his cats.
He was preceded in death by his cousin, Terry
Knutson.
