Mary E. Guthrie
Mary E. Guthrie, 88, formerly of Clear Lake, and
recently of Hastings, Minn., died Sunday, Sept. 2 at
the Regina Nursing Home in Hastings.
Mary was born Nov. 9, 1912 in Emmetsburg, Iowa, to
Thomas McNulty and Grace (Crowley) McNulty. She
married Theodore F. Guthrie in Emmetsburg on
July 7, 1938. Mary and Theodore moved to Clear Lake
in 1952. Mr. Guthrie
died July 30, 1983. Mary continued to live in Clear
Lake until 1992, when she moved to Hastings to be near
her daughter. She was a former resident of Augustana
Home in Hastings prior to moving to Regina.
Mary is survived by a son, Robert Guthrie, of
Silverthorne, Colo.; two daughters, Mary Bishop and
her husband, David, of Victoria, Minn., and Ann
Schlader and her husband, Roger, of Hastings; six
grandchildren, Rob and Ted Guthrie, Jon Bishop and his
wife, Mary Jo, Laura Bishop and her husband, Chuck
Weber, Thomas Schlader, and James Schlader and his
wife, Amy; and one great-grandchild, Eric Bishop.
She was preceded in death by her parents, four
brothers, and one sister.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Sept. 5 at
11 a.m. at the Regina Chapel in Hastings with a
visitation one hour prior to the funeral. Interment
will take place at Clear Lake Cemetery at
approximately 2:45 p.m. on Wednesday.
Arrangements are being handled by the Caturia-Smidt
Funeral Home of Hastings.
Richard R. Skene
Richard R. Skene, 92, of 14476 Balsam Ave.,
Ventura, Iowa, died Friday, Aug. 31, 2001 at the
Oakwood Care Center, Clear Lake. Memorial services
were held Friday, Sept. 7, at the Ventura United
Methodist Church, Ventura, Iowa with Rev. Paul Hasel
officiating. Inurnment was in the Clear Lake
Cemetery. Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, Clear Lake,
was in charge of services.
Richard was born June 20, 1909 on the family farm
in rural Ventura, Iowa the son of Walter and Catherine
(Burke) Skene. He graduated from Ventura High School
in 1928 and then attended Iowa State University. He
served in the United States Army during WW II in
Pattonıs Third Armored Division. He married Edith
Sorensen Aug. 26, 1942. The couple was united in
marriage for 59 years..
Following the service, he returned to the family
farm. He continued to live on the farm following his
retirement, helping his son with the operation. He
enjoyed fishing, dancing at the Surf Ballroom and
working in his garden. He was a former member of
Ventura Lions Club, a committee member of ASCS,
Ventura School Board member and was a member of Danish
Brotherhood since 1948.
Richard is survived by his wife, Edith Skene,
Ventura; a son, Robert Skene, Ventura; and a daughter,
Carolyn Skene, San Jose, Calif.; three sisters,
Charlotte Palmer, San Francisco, Calif., Anita Parker,
Houston, Texas, and Marian Whitmer, Belleville, Mich.;
sister and brothers-in-law, Verner Sorensen and his
wife, Alta, Rockford, Iowa, Thorvald Sorensen,
Plymouth, Iowa, Irvin Sorensen, Northwood, Iowa, Helen
Bergman, Britt, Iowa, Frances Miller, Ventura, Iowa
and Hans Sorensen and his wife, Beth, Menomonee Falls,
Wis., and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in
death by his parents; and one brother, Howard Skene.
Harold C. Boehnke
Harold C. Boehnke, 72, of 1030 260th St, Ventura,
Iowa died Tuesday, Sept. 4, 2001 at the Concord Care
Center, Garner, Iowa. Funeral services were Friday,
Sept. 7 at St. Johnıs Lutheran Church, rural Garner,
Iowa with the Rev. Carl Hedberg officiating.
Interment was in St. Johnıs Cemetery, rural
Garner. The Family suggests memorials to St. Johnıs
Lutheran Church.
Harold was born Jan. 13, 1929 on the family farm
in rural Ventura, Iowa the son of Charles and Elsie (Berghofer)
Boehnke. He graduated from Ventura High School in
1947 and continued farming the family farm. He
married Doris Swenson June 6, 1956.
He was a member of St. Johnıs Lutheran Church,
rural Garner, Iowa.
Harold is survived by his wife, Doris Boehnke,
rural Ventura; three children, Bev Boehnke, Cleveland
, Minn., Paul Boehnke and his wife, Terri, rural
Ventura, and Sharon Zirbel and her husband, Greg,
rural Ventura; five grandchildren, Brandon Niedermayer,
Zack Zirbel, Blake Boehnke, Zane Zirbel and Blair
Boehnke; four brothers, Clarence Boehnke and his wife,
Phyllis, Mesa, Az., Armand Boehnke and his wife,
Marjule, Burnsville, Minn., Eldon Boehnke and his
wife, Alphia, Clear Lake, and Walter Boehnke and his
wife, Betty, Denver, Colo.; one sister-in-law, Louise
Boehnke, Ventura. He was preceded in death by his
parents; and a brother, Roland Boehnke.
Marjorie Mae Caffrey
Marjorie Mae Caffrey, 97, of Clear Lake, Iowa died
Sat. Sept. 8, 2001 at the Oakwood Care Center, Clear
Lake, Iowa. Funeral services were held Tuesday, Sept.
11, at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, Clear Lake,
Iowa with Rev. Kermit Roisen of Zion Lutheran Church
officiating. Interment was in Memorial Park Cemetery,
Mason City, Iowa. Family suggests memorials to
Marjorie M. Caffrey memorial fund.
Marjorie was born May 22, 1904 four miles south of
Clear Lake, Iowa, the daughter of Charles Ludwig and
Alice Mae (Hayward) Nichols. She graduated from Clear
Lake High School in 1922. She taught country school
Mt. Vernon Township # 4.
Marjorie married Guy Caffrey Dec. 23, 1922. They
farmed near Swaledale, Clear Lake, Fertile and
Hanlontown. They moved to Clear Lake in 1967.
She enjoyed tatting, playing cards, crossword
puzzles and reading. She was a member of Zion
Lutheran Church, Clear Lake.
Marjorie is survived by her daughter-in-law Draga
Caffrey, Monarch Beach, Calif.; three grandchildren,
Douglas Caffrey and his wife, Jackie, Thornton, Iowa,
Candace (Caffrey) Smith and her husband, Tom, Cypress,
Calif. and Jeff Miller and his wife, Chris, Greene,
Iowa; grandson-in-law, Phillip Krambeer, Ventura,
Iowa; nine great -grandchildren, Ryan Caffrey,
Minneapolis, Minn., Collin Caffrey, Cedar Rapids,
Iowa, Tara (Krambeer) Lincicum and her husband, Dan,
Clear Lake, April Krambeer, Ventura, Iowa, Jamie
Miller, Greene, Iowa, Bryan Miller, Cedar Falls, Iowa,
Mark Miller, Greene, Iowa, Robbie Smith and Eric
Smith, Cypress, Calif. and two

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband
1993, daughter Elizabeth, two sons, Robert and Roger;
daughter-in-law Lois Caffrey; three brothers Robert,
John and Nick Nichols; two sisters Jan Sivesind and
Ruth Moran and a granddaughter Rhonda Krambeer.
Donald D. Jacobson
Donald D. Jacobson, 74, died Wednesday, Sept. 12,
2001 at Bickford Cottage in Cedar Falls, Iowa.
Memorial services were Monday, Sept. 17, at Dahl Van
Hove-Schoof Funeral and Creamation Service in Cedar
Falls. Memorials may be directed to Cedar Bend Humane
Society and Cedar Valley Hospice.
Don was born June 11, 1927 in Clear Lake, Iowa, the
son of Henry A. and Vernetta L. (Hanson) Jacobson. Don
was a 1945 graduate of Clear Lake High School and
served in the U.S. Army in Korea during the Korean
Conflict. He married Betty M. Lindberg on March 10,
1962 in Waterloo, Iowa. She preceded him in death on
April 5, 1998. Don was a technician with Williams
Bros. Pipeline in Clear Lake, Marshall, Minnesota and
Hudson, Iowa, retiring in 1992.
He is survived by his two daughters, Sally Hughes
of Seattle, Wash. and Betsy Kujak of Bloomington,
Minn.; three grandchildren, Michael and Tom Kujak, and
Brian Hughes; two brothers, Robert Jacobson of Clear
Lake and James Jacobson of Cedar Falls, and a sister
Arlene Gleeson of West Des Moines, Iowa.
Don was preceded in death by his wife and parents.
Duane ³Pete² Albert Huey
Duane ³Pete² Albert Huey, 74, Clear Lake, died
Wednesday, Sept. 12, 2001, at the Muse-Norris Hospice
Inpatient Unit in Mason City.
Memorial services were held Saturday, Sept. 15, at
the Zion Lutheran Church in Clear Lake with the Rev.
Dean Hess officiating. Inurnment was at the Clear Lake
Cemetery.
The family of Duane ³Pete² Albert Huey has
requested that memorial contributions be made in his
memory.
Duane ³Pete² Huey was born on June 24, 1927, in
Clear Lake, the son of Albert Roy and Caroline
(Dunterman) Huey. He attended and received his
education in the Clear Lake school system. Pete was
inducted into the U.S. Navy, serving overseas during
World War II. After his honorable discharge he came
back to Clear Lake and graduated from Clear Lake High
School. After completing his schooling he began
working for Iowa State Conservation in the Fishery
Department for a few years before working for Great
Lakes Pipeline in Clear Lake for 12 years.
He was united in marriage to JoAnn Lerdal on Feb.
1, 1948, at the United Methodist Church in Clear Lake.
In 1962, the family moved to Creston, working for
Arwell Pest Control as a district supervisor until
1969 when he moved the family to Glenwood, Iowa where
he continued to be the district supervisor for Orkin
Pest Control based in Omaha, Neb., until 1971 when the
moved back to Clear Lake, working for Harkers Meats as
a route salesman retiring due to ill health in 1989.
He enjoyed baseball and was an avid Chicago Cubs
baseball fan, enjoyed coaching little league baseball,
gardening, and scouting, but his great love and
enjoyment was his family and grandchildren.
Pete was instrumental in starting the Creston
Centennial Parade and later was Grand Marshall in the
Creston Fourth of July parade.
He was a member of the J. C. s in Clear Lake,
Clear Lake Lions Club, and Optimist Club in Glenwood,
and Zion Lutheran Church in Clear Lake.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife, JoAnn
Huey; seven children, Denise Clipperton and her
husband, David, of Waverly, Iowa, Daniel Huey and his
wife, Kathy, of Atlantic, Iowa, Dawn Richardson and
her husband, Larry, of Creston, Iowa, Duane Huey and
his wife, Terri, of Van Couver, Wash., David Huey and
his wife, Mary, of Medford, Or., Drew ³Tim² Huey and
his wife, Mary, of Nora Springs, Iowa, and Dustin Huey
and his wife, Shannon, of Clear Lake; 16
grandchildren, Jeremy and Katie Clipperton, Dianna and
Emma Huey, Megan and Aaron Richardson, Amy and Stephen
Huey, Cally and Lindsay Huey, Sam and Hannah Huey,
Hailey, Zack, Peyton, and Tanner Huey; two
great-grandchildren, Madison and Tristan Travis; one
sister, Dorcas ³Patsy² Gibb of Will Grove, Pa.; as
well as other relatives and many friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; four
brothers, Don, David Darwin, and Dennis, and three
sisters, Doris, Dorothy, and Delpha.
Clarence A. Groven
Clarence A. Groven, 92, of Garner, Iowa, died
Thursday, Sept. 13, 2001 at Mercy Medical Center-North
Iowa, Mason City. His funeral was held Saturday at St.
Paul Lutheran Church in Garner with the Rev. Robert
Bronson officiating. Music was provided by Beverly
Cataldo. Ushers were Fred Weiss and Al Voss.
Pallbearers were Steve Groven, Jon Groven, Eldrick Roy
Groven, Dale Roberts, Richard Brattrud, Steve Jennings
and Larry Johnson. Burial was in Brush Point Cemetery,
Fertile. Cataldo Funeral Home, Garner was in charge of
arrangements.
Clarence A. Groven, the son of Gilbert and Caroline
(Olson) Groven, was born Sept. 1, 1909 at Canby, Minn.
He was baptized and confirmed at Our Saviorıs Lutheran
Church in Canby. He attended the rural schools near
Canby. On Sept. 30, 1934 he married Frances Wilner
Brattrud at Mason City. They made their home in Canby
where Clarence worked for various farmers. In 1949,
they moved to Hanlontown where he worked as a
carpenter and helped farmers in the area. In 1996, he
moved to Prairie View Apartments in Garner and in July
of 2000 to Concord Care Center. Clarence enjoyed his
family, fishing and playing dominoes. He was a member
of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Garner.
He is survived by his children, Anna Niles of Mason
City, Cecil Groven and his wife, Lenora, of Garner,
Carroll Groven and his wife, Sandra, of Richmond, Va.,
Richard Groven and his wife, Julie, of Rogersville,
Mo., Gilbert Groven of Colorado Springs, Colo., Jerry
Groven and his wife, Toni, of Nora Springs, Iowa,
Robert Groven and his wife, Linda, of Omaha, Neb. and
Clarice Nauman and her husband, James, of Rudd, Iowa;
a daughter-in-law, Tammy Groven of Mondovi, Wis.; many
grandchildren and great-grandchildren; two sisters,
Gida Hasner of Canby, Minn. and Frances Lacina of
Colorado Springs, Colo.; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife,
Frances Wilner Groven in 1974; a daughter, Rosecella
Noragon in 1982; a son, Thomas, in 1998; three
sisters, Agnes, Hilma and Helen; and four brothers,
Albin, Eldrick Roy, George and Melvin.
Donald Keith Peckham Jr.
Donald Keith Peckham Jr., 44, of Clear Lake, Iowa,
died Tuesday, Sept. 25, 2001 while working at
Winnebago Industries, Forest City, Iowa. A funeral
service was held Saturday, Sept. 29, at the United
Methodist Church, 508 2nd Ave N., Clear Lake, Iowa.
The Rev. Fred Lewis will officiated. Interment was
held at the Clear Lake Cemetery. Memorials may be
given to the Donald K. Peckam Jr. Memorial Fund.
Donnie was born June 4, 1957, in Mason City, Iowa,
the son of Donald Keith and Rosie (Johnson) Peckham.
He graduated from Clear Lake High School in 1975.
Donnie first worked at Winnebago for a year. He then
worked at the Clear Lake Bakery for 22 years in the
pastry department and the last three years as
supervisor. After the bakery closed he went back to
Winnebago as a welder.
Donnie was an avid bowler, loved his motorcycle,
was a big golfer, and loved boating, skiing and
playing pool. He bowled a 700 last Monday night.
He was a kind and caring person who never knew a
stranger. He was a member of the Town Pump team in
the Monday night Bowling league.
Donnie is survived by his son, Darell Peckham,
Mason City; his parents, Donald K. and Rosie Peckham,
Clear Lake; a stepson, Aaron Versendaal, Grinnell,
Iowa; a stepdaughter, Allison Davis and her husband,
Paul, Grinnell; three grandchildren, Jordan, Jarrett
and Jagger Davis; three sisters, Tyies Andersen and
her husband, Ron, and their children, Ally and Ryan,
Mason City, Iowa, Vickie Greeley and her husband, Ray,
and their children Jenny, Daniel Scott and Brenda,
Clear Lake, Linda Richardson and her husband, David,
and their children, Olivia and Jesse, Clear Lake,; one
brother, Ted Peckham and his wife, Lisa, and their
children, Dylan and Heather, Fairford, England; and
special friend Susan Becker and her children, Mark and
Amanda, Clear Lake; and aunts, uncles and cousins.
Donnie was preceded in death by his grandparents,
Ted and LaVonne Johnson and Alfred and Cecil Peckham.
Annie Vieve Duesenberg
Annie Vieve Duesenberg, 88, formerly of Clear Lake,
died Monday Sept. 24, 2001 in Abilene, Texas. Funeral
services were held Thursday, Sept. 27, at the
Christian Church, 303 Highway 18 West, Clear Lake,
with the Rev. Mark Young officiating. Interment was in
the Clear Lake Cemetery. The family suggests memorials
be sent to H. Milton Duesenberg, 105 N. 9th St.,Clear
Lake, Iowa 50428 for the Clear Lake Christian Church,
Clear Lake Senior Citizens, or Windcrest Alzheimerıs
Care Center, Abilene, Texas.
Annie Vieve was born Feb. 22, 1913, in Oakwood,
Texas. She was the youngest of six children, of Mac
Otis and Leila Irene (Lankster) Johnson. She had three
sisters and two brothers. She met her husband Milton
H. Duesenberg, a native of Garner, Iowa in Oakwood.
Milton was in Texas working on varıs home. Milton and
Annie Vieve were married May 25, 1933 in Shreveport,
La. and left immediately for Iowa, where Milton worked
on road construction. After moving from locality to
locality to follow the construction, they settled in
Clear Lake in 1939, where Milton joined a family road
building firm and Annie Vieve was a homemaker.
Annie Vieve was a lifetime member of the Christian
Church (Disciples of Christ), Clear Lake. She taught
Sunday School (all ages), was active in women's group,
sang in the choir, advised youth groups and held
district offices. Other activities included Eastern
Star, Music Mothers, Progress Club, Republican Women,
and was a Girl Scout leader.
Annie Vieve is survived by her son, H. Milton
Duesenberg and his wife, Lois of Clear Lake; two
daughters, Beverly Moeller and her husband, Michael,
of Sioux City, Iowa, and Dana Sue Martin of Aspermont,
Texas; eight grandchildren, Linda Stelter and her
husband, Daryl, Gail Bridgeland and her husband, John,
Dana Jo Duesenberg, Ann Rickord and her husband, Bill,
John Moeller and his wife, Amy, Richard Moeller and
his wife, Denise, Jeffrey Martin and his wife, Shelly,
and Roland Martin and his wife, Donna; thirteen
great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild;
three sisters-in-law, Opal Duesenberg of Clear Lake,
Marie Duesenberg of Kalamazoo, Mi., and Ruby
(Johnson) Clinton of Oakwood, Texas; and many
nieces and nephews.
Annie Vieve was preceded in death by her parents;
husband Milton; grand-daughter, Eva Irene Martin;
great-grandchild, Joseph David Moeller; three sisters,
Myrtle Vannatta, Dana Grayson, Laurine Dixon; two
brothers, Karl Johnson and Lankster Johnson.
Joan Louise Linahon
Joan Louise Linahon, 64, Clear Lake, died Monday,
Sept. 24, 2001, at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient,
Mason City, Iowa. Funeral services were held Thursday
Sept. 27, at the Zion Lutheran Church in Clear Lake
with the Rev. Kermit Roisen officiating. Interment
was in the Clear Lake Cemetery. The family suggests
memorials to the Joan Linahon Memorial Fund.
Joan was born in Minneapolis, Minn., the daughter
of Darrell and Eleanor
(Wenger) Hieronymus. Joan graduated from high
school in Minneapolis and attended St. Maryıs School
of Nursing in St. Paul, Minn. Joan married Patrick N.
Linahon on Dec. 5, 1955 at Hampton, Iowa. After
marriage they lived in Minneapolis, moving to Clear
Lake in 1956. Joan worked at a Mason City bank before
they moved to Bondurant, Iowa where she drove school
bus for two years. After moving back to Clear Lake
she drove school bus for about eight years. In 1991
they owned and operated Clear Lake Appliance until
2000.
Joan liked to bowl, play golf, and cook. She made
ceramics for many years and enjoyed sewing. Joan and
her sisters would send jigsaw puzzles to each other.
She also worked crossword puzzles, played games, and
was a great movie buff.
Joan is survived by her husband, Patrick N.
Linahon; two children, Michael Linahon and his wife,
Lisa, of Algona, Iowa, and Linda Ernster and her
husband, Michael, of Clear Lake; two sisters, Gerry
Small and her husband, Jacke, of Irvine, Calif. and
Susan Barnhouse and her husband, Charles, of Orange,
Calif.; five grandchildren, Emily Ernster, Grace
Ernster, Jennifer Linahon, Lauren Linahon, Katie
Linahon; and several nieces and nephews.
Her parents preceded her in death.
