Jean L. Barnes
Jean L. Barnes, 68, of 1005 3rd Ave. S., Clear
Lake, Iowa died Saturday, Nov. 3, 2001 at the Muse
Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City, Iowa.
Services will be Wednesday, Nov. 7, 10:30 a.m. at
the Evangelical Free Church, Clear Lake, with the Rev.
David Wiersbe officiating. Interment will be in the
Clear Lake Cemetery. Family suggests memorials to
Evangelical Free Church, Clear Lake.
Jean was born June 26, 1933 in rural Cerro Gordo
County on her grandparentıs farm, the daughter of
Charles and Elsie (Pals) Rickard. She graduated from
Clear Lake High School in 1951 and continued her
education at Trinity Bible College, Chicago, Ill.
Jean moved back to Clear Lake where she was a
volunteer for Opportunity Village for five years after
which she then managed the Opportunity Village Store
retiring in 1998 after twenty-five years.
Jean enjoyed crocheting, knitting, going on many
bus trips and volunteering for many organizations.
She was saved at an early age, lead a strong Christian
life and was a charter member of Evangelical Free
Church, Clear Lake.
Jean is survived by her two sons, Stan Barnes and
his wife, Karla, and their daughter, Karmen, Owatonna,
Minn., and Lonny Barnes and his wife, Diane, Iowa
Falls, Iowa; one sister, Lois Meier and her husband,
Martin, Swaledale, Iowa; and several nieces and
nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents.
Jody Lynn Kaster
Jody Lynn Kaster of Harpers Ferry, Iowa formerly of
Ventura, passed away Friday, Nov. 2, 2001 at Gunderson
Lutheran Hospital in Lacrosse, Wis., from a massive
stroke suffered a week earlier.
A memorial service will be held on Thursday, Nov.
8, at 2 p.m. at the Ventura United Methodist Church
with the Rev. Paul Hasel officiating.
Inurnment took place in Harpers Ferry.
Jody was the daughter of Robert and Arlene
(Rafferty) Kaster. She was born on Thanksgiving Day,
at noon, on Nov. 27, 1958 in Mason City, Iowa.
She attended Ventura School. She graduated from
Northeast Iowa Community College at Calmar in May of
1996 with a LPN Nursing Degree. She worked for the
Thornton Manor Nursing Home in Lansing and later Home
Health Care in the area.
Jody enjoyed being out in nature and taking
pictures, fishing, hunting, camping, gathering ginseng
in the fall, but most of all she loved spending time
and doing things with her daughter Jessica, who is her
motherıs pride and joy. Jessica plans to follow her
motherıs footsteps into the field of medicine. Jody
had many friends with whom she enjoyed spending time
with and would help anyone. Her giving nature is
reflected in her desire to be an organ donor. Her
family honored her wish and today, hopefully, someone
is leading a better life.
Jody is survived by her daughter, Jessica, of
Harpers Ferry; three sisters, Sharon McIlrath, Mason
City, Iowa, Deanna Bonner, Clear Lake, and Penny
Kaster, Clear Lake; two brothers, Robert Kaster and
his wife, Colleen, Ventura, and Randy Kaster and his
wife, Barbara, Joyce, Iowa; and many aunts, uncles,
cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.
She was preced in death by her son, Aaron Kaster;
parents, Robert and Arlene Kaster; grandparents,
Charles and Winnie Kaster and Thomas and Elsie
Rafferty; and a special brother-in-law, Bob Bonner.

Jack L. Caple
Jack L. Caple, 87, of Marshalltown, Iowa, formerly
of Ventura, died Monday, Nov. 5, 2001 at the Iowa
Veterans Home in Marshalltown.
A funeral service was held on Thursday, Nov. 8, at
Ward Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, Clear Lake, with Msgr.
Joseph Slepicka officiating.
Interment was at Memorial Park Cemetery, Mason
City, where military honors were conducted by the
Mason City Veteranıs Memorial Association.
Jack was born Sept. 24, 1914 in Finksburg, Md., the
son of Roy Hugh and Rose Alice (Kimmy) Caple. He
attended Finksburg rural schools before serving in the
United States Army in the 82 Airborne as a paratrooper
during World War II. Jack moved to Clear Lake in 1946
and was united in marriage to Margaret Mary Gaffney,
who later passed away in 1963. Jack then was united
in marriage to Victoria Meyer on Oct. 3, 1964 at Holy
Family Catholic Church in Mason City. He worked as a
meat inspector for Deckerıs in Mason City for over 27
years, retiring in 1976. Jack enjoyed gardening and
was a lifelong member of the Mason City V.F.W. Post
733.
Jack will be greatly missed by his three sisters,
Margaret Reidemeyer of Baltimore, Md., Naomi Spencer
of Manchester, Md., and Fern Beaver of Westminster,
Md., and many nieces, nephews, and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his first
wife, Margaret; his second wife, Vickie; and one
sister, Ruth Poist.
Sophia Ellen Floyd Hendricks
Sophia Ellen Floyd Hendricks, 93, of Mason City,
died Monday, Nov. 5, 2001 at Mercy Medical Center
North Iowa.
A funeral service was Friday, Nov. 9, 2001 at
Ward Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, Clear Lake, with the
Reverend Dennis Ganz officiating. Interment was in
Clear Lake Cemetery.
Sophia was born Sept. 28, 1908 on Johnson Mesa, in
the Territory of New Mexico. She was the daughter of
John and Elizabeth English Floyd. Her family moved to
Iowa when Sophia was eleven. She graduated from
Jefferson High School in 1927 and was united in
marriage to Ted Hendricks the same year. They
subsequently made their home in southwestern Kansas.
In 1940, when her husband went to South America to
work in heavy construction, Sophia brought her
children back to Jefferson, Iowa. Following the
childrenıs graduation from high school, Sophia joined
her husband in Venezuela. They also lived in
Guatemala, Guyana, Haiti, and Bolivia until Tedıs
retirement, when they moved to a farm in Madison
County, Iowa. In 1988, they relocated to Clear Lake
to be near their son, Dr. James Hendricks, and his
family. In 1999, Sophia moved to the Homestead in
Mason City. She was a proud grandmother who loved to
play the organ, sing, and was a beautiful seamstress.
Sophia was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Clear
Lake and the Eastern Star in Truro, Iowa.
Mrs. Hendricks is survived by her three children,
Donita and her husband, Dr. John Fatland, of Colfax,
Iowa, Dr. James and MaryAnne Hendricks of Clear Lake,
and Meredith Myers of Bend, Or.; one sister, Eddie
Sammons of Larned, Ks.; one brother, Harold and his
wife, Zoa Hedlund of Montezuma, Ks.; eleven
grandchildren, Tamara Blair, Todd Fatland and his
wife, Linda, Tracy Fatland, Heidi Fatland and her
husband, Jeff Eaton, Lars Fatland and his wife, Karen,
Dr. John Hendricks and his wife, Kathy, Thomas
Hendricks and his wife, Sue, Ted Grauer and his wife,
Cher, Lysa Moore and her husband, David, Julie Buckley
and her husband, Jack, and Tom Myers and his wife,
Karen; and seventeen great-grandchildren, Elizabeth
Maas and her husband, Ryan, Jonathan and Amanda Blair,
Sarah, Julie, and Kathleen Fatland , Donita Grace
Fatland Christopher, John Nile Fatland, James and
Megan Hendricks, Ben Grauer, Rachael Meade, Josie
Moore, Whitney and William Buckley, and Robbie and
Ryan Myers.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her
husband; and two sisters, Mary and Ida.

Neil Thomas Boonstra
Neil Thomas Boonstra, 18, Clear Lake, died
Thursday, Nov. 8, 2001, at the Mercy Medical
Center-North Iowa in Mason City.
Funeral services were Monday, Nov. 12, at Bethlehem
Lutheran Church, Mason City, Iowa, with the Rev. Daird
Korth officiating. Burial was in Memorial Park
Cemetery, Mason City.
Neil Thomas Boonstra was born on Nov. 3, 1983, in
Mason City, the son of Thomas and Lori (McMenimen)
Boonstra. He attended and received his education in
the Clear Lake School system and received his GED in
October, 2001.
Neil loved music, playing his guitar, computers,
hanging out with his friends, shopping for clothes,
going to coffee houses and drinking espressos, and
enjoying his dog, Wiggy.
He was a member of the YMCA in Mason City.
Left to cherish his memory is his mother, Lori
McMenimen of Clear Lake; a brother, Max Boonstra of
Clear Lake; his grandfather, Russell McMenimen of
Salome, Az., his grandmother, Ann Boonstra of Mason
City; a very special aunt, Peggy Boonstra of Mason
City, an aunt, Doreen Pearsall of Danville, Calif.;
uncles, Michael McMenimen and his wife, Becky of
Apache Junction, Az., Doug McMenimen and his wife,

Everett Lowell Fankell
Everett Lowell Fankell, 90, Clear Lake, died
Friday, Nov. 9, 2001,at his home.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, Nov. 13, at the
Fertile Church of Christ, with the Rev. Dennis Ganz
officiating. Burial was in the Lincoln Township
Cemetery, rural Fertile, Iowa.
The family of Everett Lowell Fankell has requested

Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City in his memory.
Everett Lowell Fankell was born on Jan. 19, 1911,
in Grant Township, Fertile, the son of John and Daisy
(Youkom) Fankell. He attended and received his
education in the Fertile School system. He was united
in marriage to Mabel (Jensen) Orcutt in 1959, in Mason
City. She preceded him in death in 1975. He was
united in marriage to Gladys Jass in 1977 in
Missouri. She preceded him in death in 1978.
Everett farmed all his life in the Grant Township
in the Fertile area until his retirement in 1972, when
he moved to Clear Lake.
He was united in marriage to Lydia Christgau on May
5, 1979, in Austin, Minn.
He was a member of the Church of Christ in Fertile,
which his mother was instrumental in starting. He
enjoyed traveling, and going to the Clear Lake Senior
Citizen Center to eat and play cards.
Left to cherish his memory is his wife, Lydia
Fankell, of the Oakwood Care Center in Clear Lake;
three stepsons; a stepdaughter; a brother, Robert
Fankell of Worland, Wy.; a sister, Betty Raymond of
Mason City; eight nieces and nephews; as well as other
relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two wives;
a sister, Jeanette Hammond; and a brother, Harold
Fankell.
Duane Joseph Hoefer
Duane Joesph Hoefer, 73, rural Mason City, died
Thursday, Nov. 8, 2001, at the Mercy Medical
Center-North Iowa in Mason City.
A funeral mass will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday,
Nov. 14, at St. Patrickıs Catholic Church, Clear Lake,
with Msgr. Robert Hogan officiating.
Burial will be in the St. Maryıs Catholic Cemetery
in Williams, Iowa, with military honors by the
Williams American Legion Post #236.
The family of Duane Joseph Hoefer has requested
that memorial contributions be made in his memory.
Duane Joseph Hoefer was born on May 26, 1928, in
Williams, Iowa, the son of Jacob J. and Mable
(Maubach) Hoefer. He attended and received his
education in the Williams area schools, graduating
from Williams High School. On Dec. 1, 1950, he was
inducted into the U.S. Army serving overseas in the
Korean Conflict in the 7789 Medical Detachment with
the Fifth Army Division, until his honorable discharge
on Dec. 3, 1952, at Fort Custer, Mich. Before and
after his term in the U.S. Army he was very active in
his community. He served as a church director, was on
the board of the co-op elevator, was a school board
member, and was named a Master Swine Producer in
1964. Duane was actively farming at the time of his
death, which he did all his life. He moved to the
Mason City area in 1965 from Williams to his present
home. Duane planted thousands of native trees to
reforest his farm.
He was a member of St. Patrickıs Catholic Church in
Clear Lake, and Mended Hearts.
He was united in marriage to Martha Jean Crase on
June 26, 1954, at St. Maryıs Catholic Church in
Williams and to this union six children blessed their
lives.
Left to cherish his memory is his wife, Martha Jean
Hoefer of rural Mason City; Nicholas Hoefer and his
wife, Sandy, of Iowa City, Jennifer Sliwinski of
Doylestown, Penn., Thomas Hoefer of Durango, Colo.,
Patricia Mayer and her husband, Kevin, of Norwalk,
Iowa, David Hoefer and his wife, Terrie, of Ames,
Iowa, and Steven Hoefer of San Francisco, Calif.;
eleven grandchildren, Rebecca and Elizabeth Hoefer,
Travis, Mark, and Alexa Homewood, Andrew, Kate, and
Ted Sliwinski, Jacob, Emma, and Simon Hoefer; also

Marilou Francis Friedrichs
Marilou Francis Friedrichs, 70, of 408 S. 9th St.,
Clear Lake, died Friday, Nov. 16, 2001 at the Muse
Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City, Iowa.
Funeral services were Tuesday, Nov. 20, at St.
Patrickıs Catholic Church, Clear Lake, with Msgr.
Robert Hogan officiating. Interment was in the Clear

Marilou was born July 29, 1931 in Ionia, Iowa the
daughter of John and Violet (Nichols) Klassen. She
graduated from Rudd High School, Rudd, Iowa.
Marilou married Lee Friedrichs on August 12, 1950
in the Immaculate Catholic Church, Elma Iowa. They
moved to Clear Lake in 1962 where they owned and
operated the Ford dealership until 1970 and later
owned and operated the Clear Lake Appliance until
their retirement.
She was a member of St. Patrickıs Catholic Church,
Clear Lake, Iowa.
Marilou is survived by her daughter, Sandy Paulson
and her fiancé, Steve Murphy, West Branch, Iowa; two
sons, Dr. Robert Friedrichs and his wife, Debby, Mason
City, and Scott Friedrichs, Minneapolis, Minn.; three
grandchildren, Kristin Paulson, West Branch, Iowa,
Jessica Friedrichs, Cedar Falls, Iowa and Joe
Friedrichs, Missoula, Mont.; one sister, Evelyn Gabby,
Osage, Iowa; and three brothers, Jerry Klassen and his
wife, Vi, Cherry Valley, Ill., Bob Klassen and his
wife, Betty, Ventura, and Jack Klassen and his wife,
Greta, Alborne, Minn. She was preceded in death by
her parents, husband and infant son.
Roger David Miles
Roger David Miles, 46, of 7639 North Eastlake
Terrace, Chicago, Ill., died of natural causes at his
home, Saturday, Nov. 17, 2001.
Funeral memorial mass was held at 10 a.m. Sat.,
Nov. 24, 2001 at St. Patricks Catholic Church, Clear
Lake, Iowa with Msgr. Robert Hogan officiating.
Inurnment will be in the Clear Lake Cemetery. Family

Roger was born on Oct. 11, 1955, in Forest City,
Iowa, the son of William and Delores (Falada) Miles.
He graduated from Clear Lake High School 1974 and then
graduated from the University of Iowa with a degree in
chemical engineering.
He was employed in Chicago with Corn Products
International and later was transferred to their
Winston-Salem, North Carolina plant. He lived there
five years and then returned to Chicago with
assignments in South Africa, Argentina, Columbia,
Canada and across the United States. In 1999, he
began employment with CF Industries as their Manager
of Process Engineering; he was responsible for
construction in seven upper Midwest states.
Rogerıs hobbies included architectural designing,
charcoal sketching, golf, spectator sports, deep-sea
fishing, scuba diving and nature.
Survivors include his parents William and Delores
Miles, Clear Lake; two brothers, Randy Miles and his
wife, Linda, Issaquah, Wash., and Ron Miles, the Sea
Ranch, Calif.; several aunts and uncles, Stan and
Arlene Miles, Milwaukee, Wis.; Francis and Ann Falada,
West Des Moines, Iowa; Jim and Betty (Miles) Carson,
Aurora, Ill.; Agnes (Falada) Simper, Inglewood,
Calif.; Audrey Miles, Huntington Beach, Calif.; Hugh
Myers, Arcadia, Calif. and Nelson Wild, San Francisco,
Calif.; several cousins and many friends.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents, two
uncles and three aunts.
Leonard Albert Hrubes
Leonard Albert Hrubes, 79, of 807 N. 8th St., Clear
Lake, died Monday, Nov. 19, 2001 at the Oakwood Care
Center, Clear Lake, Iowa. A Funeral Mass was held
Friday, Nov. 23, at St. Patrickıs Catholic Church,
Clear Lake, Iowa with Msgr. Robert Hogan officiating.
Graveside services were at St. Johnıs Cemetery,
Duncan, Iowa. Family suggests memorials to Leonard A.
Hrubes memorial fund.
Leonard was born Sept. 10, 1922 in rural Britt,
Iowa the son of Albert and Ann (Wellik) Hrubes. He
attended rural school. He married Arlene Buseman Nov.
23, 1943 at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church, Duncan,
Iowa.
He farmed in the Klemme, Rudd and Forest City
areas. They later moved to Garner, Iowa, and in 1971
moved to Clear Lake. He worked for Woodford Wheeler
Lumber Company in Clear Lake until his retirement.
Leonard enjoyed fishing and spending time with his
family. He was a member of St. Patrickıs Catholic
Church, Clear Lake, Iowa.
Leonard is survived by his two children, Jim Hrubes
and his wife, Jan, Sun City, Az.. and Mary Mitthun and
her husband, Marlin, Thompson, Iowa; five
grandchildren, Bob Hrubes, Des Moines, Iowa, Kerri
Hrubes and her fiancé, Mark Scott, Pearland, Texas,
Jackie Mitthun and his wife, Kim, Thompson, Iowa, Kurt
Mitthun and his wife Paula, Thompson, Iowa, and Julie
Armstrong and her husband, Paul, Buffalo Center, Iowa;
nine great-grandchildren, Casandra, Kyle, Cody,
Chelsey, Kory, Nicholas, Jake, Haley and Megan; and
one sister, Margaret Katuin, Garner, Iowa. He was
preceded in death by his parents; wife, Arlene; and
one brother, Elmer Hrubes.
Bonnie Jean Al-Jazaf
Bonnie Jean Al-Jazaf, 61, Clear Lake, died Tuesday,
Nov. 20, 2001, at her home.
Funeral services were Saturday, Nov. 24, at the
United Methodist Church in Ventura, with the Rev. Paul
Hasel officiating. Burial was in the Ventura
Cemetery.
Bonnie Jean Al-Jazaf was born on Oct. 20, 1940, in
Ventura, the daughter
of Richard and Lucille (Ringgenberg) Winters. She
attended and received her education in the Ventura
School System. She also graduated from the La James
College of Hairstyling in 1980, and owned the Hanford
Salon in Mason City for a number of years. On July 7,
1996, she made a profession of faith to be baptized
into the Christian faith at the Agape Christian Family
Church in Clear Lake by Pastor David L. Toyne. She
had several hobbies, and had time to have a full time
job at the Caseyıs General Store as a cook in Clear
Lake. The hobbies she enjoyed were camping, fishing,
painting, cooking, collecting cookbooks, and e-mailing
with her many ³net² friends, but her great love and
enjoyment was spending time with her family and
grandchildren.
Left to cherish her memory are her two daughters,
Terri King and her husband, Tim, of Dougherty, Iowa,
and Kim Hesler and her husband, Greg, of Ventura; four
grandchildren, Travis King of Dubuque, Iowa, Kylie
Hesler of Mason City, Crystal King of Mason City and
Zach Hesler of Ventura; three brothers and two
sisters, Ron Winters and his wife, Pat, of Watertown,
S. D., Gary Winters and his wife, Cheryl, of
Alexander, Iowa, Dick Winters and his wife, Jo, of
Mason City, Pat Osier of Mason City, and Cindy Ebeling
and her husband, Jim, of Mason City; as well as other
relatives and friends.
Her parents; a niece, Kelly Jo; and a nephew, Mark
Winters, preceded her in death.
Bonnie will be fondly remembered and sadly missed
by all her family and friends.
Robert Raymond Kienast
Robert Raymond Kienast, 74, Clear Lake, died
Saturday, Nov. 24, 2001, at the Veterans
Administration Hospital in Minneapolis, Minn.
Memorial services will be 1 p.m. Thursday, November
29, at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 North
4th Street, Clear Lake, with Msgr. Robert Hogan of St.
Patrickıs Catholic Church in Clear Lake officiating.
Inurnment will be in the Memorial Park Cemetery, Mason
City, with military graveside honors by the Veterans
of Foreign Post in Clear Lake. Friends may call from
noon until service time on Thursday at the chapel.
According to his wishes his body was cremated.
Robert Raymond Kienast was born on Jan. 23, 1927,
in Mitchell County, Iowa, near Osage, the son of Henry
Howard and Herbertena (Michels) Kienast.
He attended and received his education in the Osage
School system, graduating from Osage High School. He
was inducted into the U.S. Army during World War II,
serving overseas in the Philippines with Co. A 42nd
Engineer Bn. in which he received the Army
Occupational Medal, Asiatic Pacific Theater Ribbon,
and the World War II victory medal. He was honorably
discharged on Nov. 7, 1946, at Ft. George Meade, MD.
He came back to the Osage area and worked as a mason
for the Kienast Construction Company for several
years. He was united in marriage to Rosalyn Petersen
on Dec. 30, 1950, at St. Patrickıs Catholic Church in
Clear Lake. After his marriage he moved to Clear Lake
where he worked for A.M.F. Inc. building and
refinishing bowling alleys until his retirement.
After his retirement he worked part-time doing
construction work and at VFW and The Town Pump in
Clear Lake.
He enjoyed bowling, playing pool, and golfing, but
his great love and enjoyment was spending time with
his grandchildren.
He was a member of VFW in Clear Lake.

Bergo and her husband, Bryan, of Mankato, Minn.; two
grandchildren, Jeremy Bergo of Minneapolis, Minn., and
Justin Bergo of Mankato; a daughter-in-law, Deborah

their family, Brandon Frampton of Iowa City, and David
Frampton of Clear Lake; brothers and sister, Joseph

He was preceded in death by his only son, Reginald
Kienast; his parents; sisters Majella and Stephania;
and three brothers, Arnold, Bernard, and Paul Kienast.
Dorothy Johanna Louise Ward
Dorothy Johanna Louise Ward, 76, Clear Lake, died
Tuesday, Nov. 27, 2001, at Muse-Norris Hospice
Inpatient Unit in Mason City.
Funeral services were Friday, Nov. 30, at the Zion
Lutheran Church in Clear Lake with the Rev. Kermit
Roisen officiating. Burial was in the Clear Lake
Cemetery.
A memorial fund has been established in memory of
Dorothy Louise Ward.
Dorothy Louise Ward was born on Dec. 10, 1924, in
rural Corwith, the daughter of William and Elfreda
Agnes (Kraft) Heidecker. She attended and received
her education in the Renwick School system, graduating
from Renwick High School. She also attended Hamilton
Business College in Mason City.
After completing her schooling she worked as a
secretary for the Quaker Oats Elevator in Renwick.
She was united in marriage to Donald G. Ward on
June 2, 1945, in Renwick. After their marriage
together they farmed near Whittemore, Corwith, and
later in Clear Lake. He preceded her in death on
Sept. 24, 1971, at which time she took over the
ownership and management of the Cave Lounge in Clear
Lake.
Dorothy enjoyed crafts, embroidery, jigsaw puzzles,
playing cards with her many friends at the Clear Lake
VFW, and outdoor gardening, but her great love and
enjoyment was her family and grandchildren.
She was a member of Zion Lutheran Church and the
adult bible study class.
Left to cherish her memory are her three daughters,
Pamela Raddatz and her husband, Steve, from Oshkosh,
Wis., Patricia Meints and her husband, Marlin ³Slim²,
from Clear Lake, and Peggy Kerr and her husband, Mark,
from Mt. Vernon; grandchildren, Art Eichmann and wife,
Colleen, Fred Eichmann and wife, Stevie of Oshkosh,
Wis., Michael Eichmann and his wife, Holly, of
Garner, Jennifer Eichmann, of Largo, Fla., Mitch
Raddatz and wife, Cindy, from Ripon, Wis., Wendy
Shahan of Lake Mills, and Joseph Meints, of Clear
Lake, Gabe Meints, of Clear Lake, Cheryl Lovan and
husband, Chan, of Clear Lake, Kelly Carew and
husband, Paul, of Ankeny, Iowa, Lindsey, Jackie, and
Christopher Kerr, all of Mt. Vernon; 11
great-grandchildren;
sisters-in-law, Ruth Nuehring and husband, Art, of
Clear Lake, Dorothy Haag of Algona, and Darlene Smith
of Clear Lake; a brother-in-law, Chan Ward and his
wife, Rosemary, of Clear Lake; as well as many nieces
and nephews and other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband; her
parents; a grandson, Donald Shahan; and a brother,
Arnold Heidecker.
Carmel Hayes Speed Lady
Carmel Hayes Speed Lady, 91, 5523 South Shore Dr.,
Clear Lake, died Monday, Nov. 26, 2001, at the Good
Shepherd Health Center, Mason City, Iowa.
Funeral services were held Friday, Nov. 30, at the
Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, Clear Lake, with his
nephew, Norman J. Atwell, Jr. officiating. Burial was
in the Memorial Park Cemetery, Mason City.
The family of Carmel Hayes ³Speed² Lady has
requested that memorial contributions be made to
Hospice of North Iowa, 232 2nd St. SE, Mason City,
Iowa 50401, in his memory.
Carmel was born to Milton Eugene and Cora Leona
(Harcourt) Lady in Cambridge, Ill. on July 27, 1910.
At the age of 12 they moved to Elkton, Minn. where
they farmed. Later he moved to Austin, Minn. and
married Ruth Bartley. They had two sons, Carmel
Eugene and Roland Shelby. In 1946 he moved to Clear
Lake.
Carmel was united in marriage to Rena Arlene Grell,
Sept. 29, 1949 in Mission, Texas. Carmel worked for
Edginton and Southard Construction Co., Ruan Gas
Transport, and Mason City Brick and Tile from which he
retired in 1975. He loved studying the Bible,
woodworking and helping friends and neighbors. He
will be greatly missed by his family and
grandchildren.
Carmel is survived by his wife, Rena Lady of Clear
Lake; daughter, Virginia Lee (Ginny) Willett and
husband, Rory, Waterloo, Iowa; son, Mark Allen Lady
and wife, Paula, Loveland, Colo.; three grandchildren,
Kristyn and Rebecca Willett, Waterloo, Iowa, and Shane
Lekwa, Boulder, Colo.; sister-in-law, Joie Lady,
Rochester, Minn.; many nieces and nephews; very dear
friends; and neighbors Al and Karen Hughes who have
supported the family through the happy and sad times.
Carmel was preceded in death by his parents, two
sons, and six brothers.
