Angeline Fuller
Angeline O. Fuller, 83, 1105 2nd Ave. S., Clear
Lake, died Wednesday morning, Dec. 27, 2000, at Mercy
Health Care Center, Mason City, Iowa. The funeral
service was held Saturday, Dec. 30, at the First
Congregational Church, Clear Lake, with the Rev. Peter
Narum officiating. Interment will be at Memorial Park
Cemetery, Mason City. Memorials may be given to the
Angeline O. Fuller Memorial Fund.
Angeline was born Dec. 28, 1916 in Clear Lake, the
daughter of John and Martha (DeVries) Trimble. She
received her education in Clear Lake and married Edwin
L. Fuller April 26, 1936 in McGregor, Iowa. She was a
life long member of the First Congregational Church in
Clear Lake and was active in Ladies Church
organizations. Angeline and her husband enjoyed working
for the Four Seasons Lodge in Bena, Minn. for 10 years.
Angeline loved knitting, gardening and fishing. Reading
was very important to Angeline. Angeline and her husband
also loved to go camping.
Angeline is survived by her son Larry Fuller, Clear
Lake; a brother, Morris Trimble, Clear Lake; three
grandsons, Matt Fuller, Los Angeles, Calif., Brett
Fuller, Overland Park, Ks., and Joseph Fuller,
Harrisonville, Mo.; two grand-daughters, Jennifer
Sillman, Ames, Iowa and Cindy Nissen, Machesmey Park,
Ill.; seven great-grandchildren and several nieces and
nephews.
Angeline was preceded in death by her parents; her
husband E.L. Fuller April 16, 1986; her daughter, Joan
Nissen; and her brother, Roy Trimble.
Harris Ostrander
Harris ³Red² Ostrander 83, of 16 South Shore Drive,
Clear Lake, died Monday, Dec. 25, 2000, at his
residence. Funeral services was held Saturday, Dec. 30,
2000 at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, Clear Lake,
with the Rev. Greg Boyle officiating. The family
requests that memorials for Red Ostrander may be made to
the Clear Lake Public Library.
Harris was born Feb. 21, 1917 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa,
the son of Ora A. and Nellie (Vandoveer) Ostrander.
Harris moved to Clear Lake at an early age and graduated
from Clear Lake High School. He served in the U.S. Army
during World Ward II and received the Purple Heart.
After his discharge he returned to Clear Lake and worked
as a bartender at the Ritz Club in Clear Lake for many
years. ³Red² met his wife Liz Mayer, who also worked for
the Ritz and they were married Feb. 18, 1946.
"Red" is survived by two sons, Jim Ostrander and his
wife Kristin, Waterloo, Iowa, and Tim Ostrander and his
wife Olivia, Clear Lake; three daughters, Sharon Sallee
and her husband Bob, Indianola, Iowa, Mary Pals and her
husband Jeff, Hawarden, Iowa, Cindy Christensen and her
husband Doug, Cedar Falls, Iowa; one brother, Ora
"Pinky" Ostrander, Mesa, Az.; fourteen grandchildren,
and one great-grandchild.
"Red" was preceded in death by his parents; his
spouse Liz; one grandson, Tanner Pals; and two brothers,
David and Bruce Ostrander.
Fannie Duregger
Fannie Venetta Mae Duregger, 89, 1708 Main Ave.,
Clear Lake, died Wednesday night, Dec. 27, 2000, at the
Muse-Norris Hospice Iowa Inpatient Unit, Mason City,
Iowa. Funeral services were held Saturday, Dec. 30,
2000, at the United Methodist Church of Ventura, Iowa.
Interment was at the Clear Lake Cemetery. Memorials may
be given to the Fannie Duregger Memorial Fund.
Fannie Vennetta Mae was born in Mason City, Iowa ,
Aug. 24, 1911, the daughter of James Orie and Emma Etta
(Bonner) Rish. The family moved to North Dakota and
lived there until about 1921. Fannie, her parents and
brothers then settled in Menahaga, Minn. Her mother and
younger brother moved to Clear Lake, but Fannie
remained in Menahega to work for a family so that she
could finish her last year of high school. Fannie
graduated from Menahaga High School on May 29, 1929,
then moved to Clear Lake. She worked with her mother at
the Outing Club. She met Albert E. Duregger and they
married on Nov. 30, 1933. To this union six children
were born. Fannie and Al lived in Clear Lake and raised
their family. They also raised two granddaughters,
Denise and Kristen.
Fannie enjoyed crocheting, talking on the phone,
attending church, and especially spending time with her
grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She also had a
special fondness for cats and dogs. She lost her beloved
pet dog Tasha in February to cancer. It was her wish
that she and Tasha enter the Kingdom of Heaven together,
so Tashaıs remains will be buried with her.
Left to cherish her memory is one son, Dennis
Duregger, Clear Lake; three daughters, Karen Nichols and
her husband John, Clear Lake, Vickie Dietrich, Mason
City, Iowa, and Jolene Boyd and her husband William,
Mason City; one brother, Kenneth Rish, Arco, Idaho; 16
grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren.
Fannie was preceded in death by her parents, her
husband Albert Aug. 13, 1995; two brothers, Laurence
Rish and Harlan Rish; one sister, Fern Rish; two
daughters, Venetta Mae Duregger and Carol Jean Duregger;
and one grandson Jeffrey Duregger.
Marie Gardow
Marie Gardow, 76, of Lakeside Acres, Clear Lake,
passed away on Dec. 27, 2000, at the Hospice of North
Iowa in Mason City, Iowa following surgical
complications and a brief illness. A memorial service
will be held at a later date. Ward-Van Slyke Colonial
Chapel is in charge of arrangements. The body has been
cremated. The inurnment will be held at Memorial Park
Columbarium. It is suggested that remembrances be made
to the Clear Lake Senior Center in Marieıs name.
Marie was born in Maynard, Iowa to Herman and Helen
(Croft) Gardow on Feb. 27, 1924. She graduated from the
Maynard Public Schools in 1942 and went on to work at
Solar Aircraft in Des Moines during WW II. Following the
war she accepted employment in Chicago, Ill. where she
eventually became a shift superintendent at a large
manufacturing plant producing a variety of electrical
products. In this capacity she hired, trained and
supervised hundreds of plant workers during her near 30
years association with the company. She received
numerous commendations for her dedication and was always
considered a tough, but fair, no nonsense manager. She
retired in 1981 and moved back to Iowa, locating in
Clear Lake to be near family members.
An ardent sports fan, she was an enthusiastic
Chicago Bulls supporter and kept abreast of many
athletic events such as college basketball, football,
and professional boxing. She loved fishing and often
could be found sitting on a dock in Clear Lake, with a
line (and toe) in the water waiting for that "big one"
to strike. She was an active member of the Clear Lake
Senior Citizens Center where she participated in a
number of Center activities.
Marie leaves her mother, four sisters, two brothers
and a host of friends to celebrate her life and mourn
her departure. They are: Helen Gardow, mother, of Clear
Lake; Esther Walling, sister, of Waterloo, Iowa;
Sharlean Ropes, sister, and her husband John, of Mason
City; Helen Skubinna, sister, and her husband Leon of
Cedar Falls, Iowa; Bonnie Kiel, sister, of Ventura,
Iowa; Herman Gadow Jr., brother, and his wife Dee, of
Oelwein, Iowa; and Milo Gadow, brother, and wife
Harriet, of Cedar Falls; and in addition five nephews
and three nieces.
She was preceded in death by her father, Herman, and
one brother, John.
Mary Thompson
Mary Elizabeth Thompson, 85, of Ventura, died
Monday, Jan. 1, 2001, at the Muse-Norris Hospice
Inpatient Unit in Mason City, Iowa.
Funeral services were held Thursday, Jan. 4 at the
Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, Clear Lake, with Rev.
Randy Vaage officiating. Burial was in the Ell Township
Cemetery, Klemme, Iowa.
The family of Mary Elizabeth Thompson has requested
that memorial contributions be made to the Mary
Elizabeth Thompson memorial fund in her memory.
Mary Elizabeth Thompson was born on Nov. 9, 1915, in
Rockford, Iowa, the daughter of Earl and Edith Kissell
and later stepdaughter of Art Awe. She attended and
received her education in the Rockford School system.
Mary was united in marriage to Ray Thompson on May
3, 1931, in Mason City. He preceded her in death on May
10, 1995. After their marriage they lived in Mason City
until 1948, when they moved to Belmond, Iowa. While
living in Belmond Mary cooked at the Town House Café and
Aldesonıs Café. In 1968, they moved to Ventura where
they owned and operated Elm Bend Resort and Café on
Clear Lake. Mary became known for her cinnamon rolls,
which she loved to share with her children and
grandchildren. They moved back to Belmond for a few
years before moving back to Ventura in 1976, where she
still lived.
Mary and her husband Ray shared a passion for
fishing, snowmobiling, and going to the park. Mary loved
to work with her flowers in the house and the garden and
feed the birds - a joy she shared with her grandson,
Jon, from Australia. As an avid Hawkeye fan, she never
missed a game. It was a treat when her granddaughter,
Kelli, would come out and play cards with her. In her
quiet times you would find Mary crocheting or playing
her hand held solitaire game.
Left to cherish her memory are her three children,
Ramona (Mona) McLaughlin and her husband Joe of Belmond,
Marlys Pliley and her husband Bob of Ventura, and Dan
Thompson and his wife Dee of Clear Lake; eight
grandchildren, Joey McLaughlin and his wife Renee of
Belmond, Jon McLaughlin of Melborne, Australia, Tony
McLaughlin and his wife Gayla of Belmond, Mark
McLaughlin and his wife Patti of Clear Lake, Diana (Pliley)
and her husband Ron Dogotch of Houston, Texas and Jeff
Pliley of Cold Springs, Minn., Annette (Thompson) and
her husband David Lee of Des Moines and Kelli Thompson
of Clear Lake; eleven great-grandchildren, Erin
(McLaughlin) Strong, Chris Philben, Amanda Philben,
Tonisha McLaughlin, Chase McLaughlin, Jordon McLaughlin,
Zachariah McLaughlin, Heather (Dogotch) and her husband
Jeff Lehrmann, Amanda Dogotch, Kim Dogotch, and Heidi
Dogotch.
Besides her husband Ray she was also preceded in
death by her parents, and two sisters, Leona Turnbull,
and Helen Farnsworth.
Curtis Christensen
Curtis Einer Christensen, 70, of Ventura, died
Monday, Jan. 1, 2001, at the Muse-Norris Hospice
Inpatient Unit in Mason City.
Funeral services were held Friday, Jan. 5, 2001, at
the Redeemer Lutheran Church in Ventura with Rev. Daird
W. Korth officiating. Burial was in the Memorial Park
Cemetery, Mason City.
The family of Curtis Einer Christensen has requested
that memorial contributions be made to Muse-Norris
Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City in his memory.
Curtis Einer Christensen was born on Feb. 4, 1930,
in Garner, Iowa, the son of Einer and Matilda (Paulson)
Christensen. He attended and received his education in
the rural country schools in Hancock County, graduating
from Ventura High School in 1947. He also attended and
graduated from Hamilton Business College in Mason City
in 1948. On Dec. 27, 1948, he was inducted into the U.S.
Air Force serving during the Korean Conflict until his
honorable discharge on August 15, 1951. He was united in
marriage to Betty McKee on Aug. 9, 1952, at the Rock
Creek Lutheran Church in Osage, Iowa. Curtis worked for
the Northern Natural Gas Company, which is now called
Enron Company in Ventura for 37 years until his
retirement. After his retirement he worked as an
insurance adjuster for the Cerro Gordo Mutual Insurance
Company in Mason City for a short time.
He enjoyed golfing, fishing, gardening, playing
Bridge, was a high school and college sports
enthusiasts, he also enjoyed children, his coffee group
at the Deli, and spending time with his wife Betty at
the beach on Florida, but his great love and enjoyment
was his family and grandchildren.
He was a member of the Ventura Gun Club and the
Booster Club, was the first city clerk in Ventura, was
a little league baseball coach, and was on the
committeeıs in Ventura for a new public library, and
gymnasium.
Left to cherish his memory is his wife Betty
Christensen of Ventura; four children, Douglas
Christensen and his wife Cindy of Cedar Falls, Iowa,
Thomas Christensen and his wife Gracie of Houston,
Texas, Richard Christensen and his wife Tracy of Cedar
Rapids, and Susan Clark and her husband Bradley of
Clive, Iowa; eleven grandchildren, Heidi, Seth, Camille,
Peter, Scott, Alex, Chad, Austin, and Drew Christensen,
and Zoey and Maggie Clark; a sister, Maxine Sommerfield
of Mason City, and a brother, Max Christensen and his
wife Mary of Ventura, as well as other relatives and
many friends.
His parents preceded him in death.
Jeanne Fraser
Jeanne E. Fraser, 75, Mason City, Iowa, died Monday,
Jan. 1, 2001 at the Muse-Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit
of North Iowa. Funeral services were held Friday, Jan 5,
at St. Patrickıs Catholic Church, Clear Lake. Interment
was in the Clear Lake Cemetery. Memorials may be made to
the Jeanne E. Fraser Memorial Fund.
Jeanne was born July 24, 1925 at Mason City, the
daughter of Godfrid and Marie Margaret (Miller) Stricker.
Jeanne graduated from high school in Wesley, Iowa. She
attended La James Beauty College in Mason City. Jeanne
farmed with her husband Kenneth in the Algona area.
Jeanne worked at Federal Upholstery for 37 years. She
enjoyed sewing and cooking. She was a member of St.
Patrickıs Catholic Church.
Jeanne is survived by her son, Troy K. Fraser,
Meservey, Iowa; three daughters, Barbara J. Poppe, Mason
City, Jacqueline A. Pearson and her husband Thomas,
Covington, Ga., and Connie J. Barlow and her husband
Steve, Mason City; one sister, Eleanor Bixler, Mason
City; and one brother, Robert Stricker and his wife
Sally, Mason City; twelve grandchildren; nineteen
great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild; and
a son-in-law, Ron Barlow, Clear Lake.
Jeanne is preceded in death by her parents, her
husband Kenneth, and two brothers.
Marcia Shaffer
Marcia J. Shaffer, 84, Ventura, Iowa, died Monday,
Jan. 1, 2001, at the Oakwood Care Center, Clear Lake.
Funeral services were held Thursday, Jan. 4, at the
First Congregational Church, Clear Lake, with Pastor
Thomas Healey officiating. Inurnment will be held at
Memorial Park Cemetery, Mason City, at a later date.
Memorials may be given to the First Congregational
Church in her name. Pat Treloar was the organist. Deb
Hild was soloist, singing "Lord, I Stretch My Hands to
You" and "Be Not Afraid." Michael Grandon, Thomas Healy
and Larry Shaffer delivered eulogies.
Honorary pallbearers were Wayne Johnson and Fred
Banks. Pallbearers were Milford Knutson, Matt Knutson,
Todd Knutson, David Rosendahl, Lynn Rosendahl, Robert
Skene and Russell Mott.
Marcia was born June 9, 1916, in Mason City, the
daughter of Pearl Morrow and Pearl Mae (Oxley) Hickok.
She graduated from Ventura High School in 1934. She
attended Iowa State Teachers College and taught
elementary school in Dows and Coulter, Iowa for three
years. She married Bill Shaffer June 29, 1939 at her
parentıs home south of Ventura. They moved to Clear Lake
where they started their family and lived there until
1955. They moved back to the family farm. She continued
to live there after Billıs death in 1978. Marcia was
active in helping with many aspects of farm life,
gardening, selling eggs, raising lambs, unloading grain
wagons, and preparing many great meals. Marcia moved
to The Meadows in 1998. She moved to Oakwood Care
Center in 1999 and lived there until her death.
She was a lifelong member of the First
Congregational Church and taught Sunday school there in
her younger years. She was also a 50-year member of the
Motherıs Study Club.
Marcia is survived by her sons Larry A. Shaffer and
his wife Kathy, Ventura, and Arlan L. Shaffer and his
wife Cathy, Porterville, Calif.; and two grandchildren,
Jennifer Shaffer, Monticello, Iowa and J Dylan Shaffer,
Cedar Falls, Iowa.
Marcia was preceded in death by her parents, and her
husband Bill.
Loretta Roper
Loretta T. Roper, 79, of Bradenton, Fla., passed
away peacefully on Wednesday, Jan. 3, 2001 at the
Muse-Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City, Iowa.
A private service of remembrance and caring will be
held at the home of her son and daughter-in-law, Mr. and
Mrs. Albert H. Roper, 19 Timberlane in Clear Lake, with
the Rev. Dean Hess of Zion Lutheran Church in Clear Lake
officiating.
The family of Loretta T. Roper has requested that
memorial contributions be made to the National Mental
Health Association in her memory.
Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, Clear Lake, is in
charge of the arrangements.
Loretta, the first daughter of Moseı and Alice
(Benedetti) Tarabella, was born on Aug. 20, 1921 in
Malbacco, Italy, a tiny marble mining town in the
coastal Tuscan mountains. She met her future husband,
Edwin Harris Roper, in Rome during WWII. They were
united in marriage on June 29, 1947, in Menomonee,
Mich. The couple made their home in Riverside, Ill.
with later moves to Aurora and Brookfield, Ill. A
gourmet cook and a master gardener, Loretta also enjoyed
reading, art and music.
She was a member of the Riverside First Presbyterian
Church where she sang in the choir.
Following her husbandıs retirement in 1980, the
couple moved to Bradenton, Fla. Loretta joined and
served as a deaconess in the Bayshore Gardens
Presbyterian Church. On Dec. 16, 2000 she moved to
Clear Lake to be close to her son and his family.
Her husband preceded Mrs. Roper in death. She is
survived by her son Albert Roper and his wife Sally of
Clear Lake; daughter Alice LeCount of Vail, Colo.;
sister Giuseppina Montanarini and brother Steno
Tarabella of Rome, Italy; brother Franco Tarabella of
Forte dei Marmi, Lucca, Italy; grandchildren Virginia,
Danielle, A.J., Charles and Zachary Roper of Clear Lake;
Ashton Lafferty of Denver, Colo., Michael and Marnee
LeCount of Vail, Colo. and many dear friends in Italy,
Illinois, Colorado and Florida.
Wilbert "Junior" Garrington
Wilbert "Junior" Garrington Jr., 69, of 5851 South
Shore Drive #48, Clear Lake, died Saturday, Jan. 6, 2001
at Iowa Veterans Home, Marshalltown, Iowa.
Funeral services will be held Friday, Jan. 12, 1
p.m., at Pursel-Davis Funeral Home and Crematory with
Pastors Jim Allard and Steve Nicholson of Clear Lake
Church of Christ officiating. Visiting hours will be
from 5-9 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Burial will
be at Rose Hill Memorial Gardens in Marshalltown. A
memorial fund has been established in his named.
He was born May 14, 1931 in Marshalltown, the son of
Wilbert and Loni (Marquis) Garrington. He was raised
and educated in Marshalltown. He joined the United
States Air Force during the Korean Conflict. He was
married to Bobbie Lukes on June 2, 1968 in LeGrande,
Iowa. He was an owner/operator of
a transportation company. He left Marshalltown in 1970
and lived in California for 11 years. He retired in 1984
and returned to Clear Lake. He was an athlete in high
school and excelled in football and baseball. He was an
accomplished musician and singer. He played the piano,
saxophone and organ. He and his brother were singing
evangelists when they were young boys.
He is survived by his wife, Bobbette Garrington,
Clear Lake; a son, Brad Garrington and his wife Robin,
Clear Lake; two daughters, Monique and her husband
Richard Pinheiro, Clear Lake, and Chris and her husband
Mark Smith, Savannah, Tenn.; two step-sons, Todd Shill
and his wife Debbie of Johnston, Iowa, and Shawn Shill
and his wife, Jamie of Clear Lake; two brothers, Jack
and his wife LeAnne Garrington, Ft. Worth, Texas, and
Don and his wife Judy Garrington, Mission Viejo, Calif.;
and sixteen grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother
Bill, his son Rick, and his daughter Kim Pinheiro.
John Hayward
John Verner Hayward, 84, died Saturday, Jan. 13 at
Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unite, Mason City, Iowa.
John was born July 7, 1916 in Davenport, Iowa, the
son of Verner E. and Kate Mary (Ford) Hayward. He
attended Davenport schools, graduating from high school
in 1934. During high school he was prominent on debate
teams, excelled in athletics, and received academic
honors. He belonged to a high
school menıs fraternity and was a member of the
Davenport Country Clubıs Velie Cup Championship Golf
Team.
He attended Grinnell College in Grinnell, Iowa and
graduated with a business degree in 1938. While there he
was a secretary of the campus YMCA, a charter member of
the ³Friarıs² Honor Society, and a member of the
Grinnell Menıs Honor G Club. He earned seven major
letters in track, basketball, and football.
In 1939, John married his college sweetheart, Adelia
(Dee) Woodward on June 24 at St. Johnıs Episcopal Church
in Mason City, Iowa. Dee is the daughter of Dr. and Mrs.
L. R. Woodward who resided in Mason City and a 1939
graduate of Grinnell College.
The Haywards made their home in Davenport, Iowa
where their four children were born and John took over
the family business: the Davenport Ladder Company. In
1955, the family moved to Estherville where John was
president of the Northern Lumber Company. The family
moved to Mason City in 1957 and John began work as a
contractor. Summers were spent at Dodges Point Beach on
Clear Lake. The Clear Lake home became their permanent
residence in 1968.
While living in Clear Lake, John became an active
member of the Clear Lake Yacht Club and served as head
judge and race officer for many years. He was also
president of the Clear Lake Arts Council for three
years, during which time Art in the Park became an
annual event. In addition, he served on the board of the
Clear Lake Fire Museum, was a member of the United
Methodist Church, and served as secretary of the Clear
Lake Rotary Club until his death.
He is survived by his wife Adelia (Dee) W. Hayward;
three children, Stephen V. Hayward and Donna, Puerto
Penasco, Mexico, Alan L. Hayward and Becky, Mason City,
and Lynne M. Bombinski and Greg, Phoenix, Az.;
grandchildren Suzanne Hayward, Libby (Hayward) Thivierge,
John Bombinski, and Jimmy Bombinski; and
great-grandchildren Lauren Collier, Jade Collier, and
Taylor Bombinski. He was preceded in death by his
parents; a brother William Hayward; a sister Katheryn
(Hayward) Furrow; and son, John A. Hayward, in 1965.
John will be remembered for his devotion to his
family and his commitment to the community. He
contributed generously of his time to his church,
various scouting programs, civic organizations and the
Rotary Club. He was an avid sports fan who competed with
honor on and off the field.
Memorial services celebrating Johnıs life were held
on Monday, Jan. 15, at the United Methodist Church in
Clear Lake with the Rev. Fred Lewis officiating.

the Hospice of North Iowa.
Fred DeBartolo
Fred DeBartolo of Green Valley, Az. and long-time
summer resident of Clear Lake, died Jan. 15, 2001.
Memorial and internment will be held at a later date
in Newton, Iowa. Memorials can be directed to Grinnell
College or charity of choice.
Fred was the only child of Gilbert and Bertha (Svec)
DeBartolo and was born in Chicago, Ill. on July 3,
1918. He graduated from Austin High School (Chicago)
and enrolled at Grinnell College. Fred was proud to be
a member of Grinnellıs Menıs Athletic Honor G Club, and
graduated with a degree in Mathematics in 1940.
Grinnell made Fred its Honorary Grand Marshall during
the 1990 commencement.
Upon graduation, Fred enlisted in the U.S. Army.
"This citizen soldier" served the 209th Field artillery
Battalion in France and Germany and attained the rank of
Captain.
Fred married fellow Grinnellian, Jean Pearl Fellows
on June 30, 1946. The couple then moved to Manitoba,
Canada, where Fred pursued graduate studies in Actuarial
Science.
He was an actuary for Lincoln National Life
Insurance Co., of Fort Wayne, Ind., American United Life
Insurance Co. of Indianapolis, Lafayette Life Insurance
Co. of Lafayette, Ind. and the chief actuary for
Philadelphia Life Insurance Co. of Philadelphia, Penn.
Fred was also on the board of directors of the Keystone
Life Insurance Co.
Fred will be remembered as an intensively
competitive individual, but one always guided by
fairness and honesty. He was a Life-Master bridge player
and director, a life-long philatelist, boat
builder/sailor, gardener, and all-around hard worker.
He is survived by his wife, Jean Fellows DeBartolo;
son Thomas Fred DeBartolo and his wife Christy, Clear
Lake; daughter-in-law Shirley Mansfield DeBartolo,
Bedford, Mass.; grandchildren Mary Clare, Lucy, Gilbert,
and Ann DeBartolo and David and Michael DeBartolo
He was preceded in death by his parents and his sons
Gilbert in 1989 and an infant son David in 1955.
Marian Pitkin
Marian L. Pitkin, 87, 22445 Eagle Ave., Clear Lake,
died Sunday, Jan. 14, 2001, at the Muse-Norris Hospice
Inpatient Unit of North Iowa.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, Jan. 18,
10:30 a.m. at the Fertile Lutheran Church, Fertile,
Iowa, with the Rev. Merlin Norris officiating.
Visitation will be Wednesday from 5 7 p.m. at Ward-Van
Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. 4th St., Clear Lake.
Interment will be at Memorial Park Cemetery, Mason City,
Iowa. Memorials may be given to the Marian L. Pitkin
Memorial Fund.
Marian was born Nov. 22, 1913, on a farm near
Garner, Iowa, the daughter of Louis and Emma (Anderson)
Olson. She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran
faith at Ellington Prairie Church. After graduating from
Garner High School in 1931, she received her Normal
Training Teacherıs Certificate and taught rural school
for six years. On May 18, 1938, she was married to
Sherwood Pitkin in the Ellington Prairie Church of rural
Garner. They farmed in the Garner and Clear Lake areas.
She was a member of Fertile Lutheran Church, the ELCW,
and was a member of the Fertile Garden Club. Her life
centered around her family, friends and church. The
couple celebrated their 62nd wedding anniversary in May,
2000.
Marian is survived by her husband, Sherwood Pitkin;
three children, Sherril Pitkin and his wife Susan and
their two children, Kristine and Brian, of Corvallis,
Ore., Donna and her husband, Jerry Ouverson of
Fertile,and their five children, Jeff Ouverson and his
wife Dixie of Manly, Iowa, Jon Ouverson of Forest City,
Iowa, Julie Ouverson of Seoul, South Korea, Jodie and
Jamie Ouverson both of Des Moines, Iowa, and Jim Pitkin
of Mason City; a sister, Bernice Anderson of Forest
City; a brother, Arno Olson and his wife Alma of
Garner, and many nieces and nephews.
Marian is preceded in death by her parents; two
brothers, Norman and Milo; a sister-in-law, Hulda Olson
and a brother-in-law, Norman Anderson.

Jennieve (Peg) Pearl Hunt,
95, died Sunday, Jan. 21, 2001 at the Good Shepherd Care
Center, Mason City, Iowa. A funeral service will be
held Wednesday, Jan. 24, 1:30 PM at the Ward-Van Slyke
Colonial Chapel, Clear
Lake, with the Rev. Fred Lewis officiating.
Jennieve (Peg) was born Feb. 23, 1905 in Rural Mt.
Vernon Township, Cerro Gordo County, Iowa, the daughter
of Robert A. and Mabel (Cheney)
Miller. She received her education in Clear Lake
schools and attended business college in Mason City.
She was united in marriage to Lloyd A. Hunt, Jan. 30,
1928 at Mason City. They farmed in the Thornton,
Ventura, Clear Lake and Mason City areas until her
husbandıs death in 1973. She lived in rural Clear Lake
until 1991, when she moved to the Meadows
apartments in Clear Lake. She entered Good Shepherd
Care Center in December 1994.
Jennieve was a member of the United Methodist Church
in Clear Lake.
Jennieve was first and foremost a homemaker, making
a home for her husband and two daughters and their
families. She was always there when needed. In their
early married life, she and her husband made a home for
her husband's two younger brothers and, for a time, her
father-in-law. On
many Sunday afternoons, their home was a gathering place
for young people. Many nieces and nephews enjoyed
week-ends or a vacation with them on the farm. When the
grandchildren came, they were always welcome for a stay
with Grandma and Grandpa.
Jennieve enjoyed tending her many plants,
crocheting, knitting, ceramics and handcrafting and made
many lovely gifts for her family and friends until
failing eyesight prevented her from doing so. She
looked forward to a card game with family members,
especially her sister, Jean and dear friend, Ruth
Rhodes. Doing word games and cryptoquotes was her
favorite pastime. She was a willing and compassionate
listener for anyone who had a problem or just needed to
talk.
Jennieve is survived by two daughters, Bonnie
Olinger, and Shirley Eibey and her husband Richard, all
of Clear Lake; four grandchildren, Teresa Conrad and her
husband, Doug, Raytown, Mo., Terry Olinger, Sioux Falls,
S.D., Tracy Olinger, Mililani, Hawaii, and Brenda
Wichman and her husband,
Tim, Clear Lake; four great-grandchildren, Leah Conrad,
Raytown, Mo., Shannon Orth, Tucson, Az., and Brianna and
Bryce Wichman, Clear Lake; a brother-in-law, Bernard
McMurray and his wife Carol, Mason City; a
sister-in-law, Neola Ivey, Clear Lake; several nieces,
nephews and cousins
and a special friend, Ruth Rhodes of Fertile.
She was preceded in death by her husband; parents;
two sisters, Jean McMurray and Evelyn Harthan; two
brothers, Lester and Everett Miller, and a son-in-law,
Harold Olinger.
Lillian Dagny Miller
Lillian Dagny Miller, 84, of Bethany Manor, Story
City, Iowa, died Jan. 16, 2001. Funeral services were
held Jan. 19 at Bethany Manor Chapel in Story City.
Burial was in Lawn Hill Cemetery near Stanhope, Iowa.
Lillian was born May 23, 1916 in Hamilton County,
Iowa to Klaus and Synnove (Blumdahl) Selhiem.
She was a former resident of Clear Lake where she
was co-owner of Sunset Boat Livery. She was also a
bookkeeper for Hanson Marine in P.M. Park. During her
life she drove school bus for Webster City Community
School District and was bookkeeper for the bus barn,
worked at the Maid Rite in
Story City, and was a cook at Northcrest in Ames, Iowa.
She also lived in Stanhope and Des Moines, Iowa.
Lillian was a member of Our Savior Lutheran Church
in Stanhope, where she taught Sunday School and helped
with Christmas programs. She is survived by three
daughters, Marlene Sebring of Story City, Kathleen
Newton of Las Vegas, Nev., and Bonnie Jean Neese of
Colfax, Iowa; two sons, Richard D. Miller of Virginia,
and Raymond E. Miller of Virginia;
one brother, Lloyd Selhiem of Denver, Colo.; one sister,
Charlotte Long of Waldorf, Md.; thirteen grandchildren,
23 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild.
She was preceded in death by her parents; one
sister, Dorothea Stark, and one brother, Norman Selhiem.

Elmer Larson Jr.
Elmer Larson Jr., 83, of Clear Lake, died Jan. 17,
2001 at Muse Norris Hopsice Inpatient Unit, Mason City.
A memorial service will be held in the spring. There
will be no visitation. At Elmer's request his remains
will be cremated and scattered at sea.
Elmer was born June 10, 1917 in Woolstock, Iowa, the
son of Elmer and Lila (Miller) Larson. He attended and
graduated from school in the Woolstock area. He married
Edith I. Knapp Nov. 18, 1937 in Fort Dodge, Iowa. They
lived in the Stanhope and Des Moines area. They moved to
Eldora, Iowa in 1972 where they owned the Rainbow
Lounge. In 1982 they retired and moved to Clear Lake
where Elmer enjoyed fishing and woodworking.
Elmer is survived by four daughters, Mary Rowland,
Cedar Park, Texas, Karen Larson, Boise, Id., Michelle
Larsen, Des Moines, and Angela Bradley, Salem, Or.; two
sons, Gil Larson, Corona, Calif., and Terry Larson,
Boise, Id.; two sisters, Marcella Claude, Webster City,
Iowa, and Laura of Texas;
two brothers, Charles Larson of Goodell, Iowa, and Dean
Larson of Stanhope, 13 grandchildren and 13
great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, four
sisters, and three brothers.

Wamstad
Thorstein ³Tom² Wamstad, 93, of Mason City, died
Sunday, Jan. 21, 2001 at Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient
Unit in Mason City, Iowa. Funeral services will be
10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 24 at Our Saviorıs Lutheran
Church in Osage with the Rev. Dennis Hanson
officiating. Visitation is from 9:30 - 10:30 a.m.
Wednesday at the church. Interment will be in the Osage
cemetery.
Tom was born in Totin, Norway, March 12, 1907, the
son of Thorwald and Petra Wamstad. On May 28, 1925, he
came to the United States, first working in the Dakotas
as a hired man, doing trucking and eventually ending up
in Iowa. On Feb. 20, 1935 he married Esther Nelson.
The couple farmed near
Nora Springs for 17 years, then moved to a farm near
Lyle, Minn. They farmed there until retiring in 1978
when they moved to Osage, Iowa. He later sold his home
in Osage and moved to Mason City, where he lived until
his death.
Tom is survived by two sisters-in-law, Laura Witt of
Osage and Anita Nelson of Mason City, a special friend,
Marian Holt of Clear Lake, and numerous nieces and
nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, and
his wife Esther in 1985.

Walter Amos Wood III
Funeral services for Walter Amos Wood III, 5125
South Shore Drive, Clear Lake were held Saturday, Jan.
27, 2001, at the Clear Lake United Methodist Church.
Walter was born to W. Amos and Rachel (Zirbel) Wood
on Aug. 21, 1955, and grew up on their farm south of
Clear Lake where he was a vital part of the family to
build the Wood Family Farm operations during the 60's
and 70ıs. He excelled in school, especially math and
calculus courses at Clear Lake, and later at the
University of Iowa where he also studied engineering.
Walter was a free spirit, a deep thinker and as he grew
older, he had many adventures on his own. He loved to
bicycle and has participated in RAGBRAI several times
and once pedaled back from California to Clear Lake in
19 days. Another time he roamed the East Coast on his
bicycle and discovered New York was not to his liking.
Walter always returned to Clear Lake eventually.
His death on Jan. 23, 2001, is mourned by his father
and mother, brother Dan and wife Wendy and their
children, Joslyn and Austin, of rural Garner, brother
Roger, of Osceola, and his children, Jennifer, Jacob and
Millie Marie, and by his sister, Dianne Bojorquez and
husband, Abel, of Clear Lake, and their children, Alex
and Gracie. Walter was also loved by numerous auntsand
uncles and forty-plus cousins.
He was preceded in death by his paternal
grandparents, Walter and Alma Wood, and maternal
grandparents, Alfred and Ruth Zirbel.
The family respectfully requests memorials for
Walter be given to the National Alliance for the

Meanwhile, Walter is on his bike pedaling down a

Reuben Grell
Reuben E. Grell, 83, 18074 C Grouse, Ave., Clear
Lake, died Wednesday, Jan. 24, 2001 at his home. The
funeral service was held Friday, Jan. 26 atthe United
Methodist Church, Clear Lake with the Rev. Fred Lewis
officiating. Military honors were by by the Clear Lake
V.F.W. Interment was in the Clear Lake Cemetery.
Memorials may be given to the Reuben Grell
Memorial Fund.
Reuben was born Feb. 8, 1917, the son of John and
Flora (Hesley) Grell near Thompson, Iowa. He lived in
the Clear Lake area most of his life. He attended rural
schools. He graduated from Clear Lake High School and
graduated from Iowa State University in 1940. Reuben was
in the Army Airforce, discharged in 1943. Reuben married
Betty M. Treloar on May 16,
1942. He was an Industrial Arts Teacher at Clear Lake
from 1944 to 1954.
He was a building contractor until 1960. He designed for
Forester RV
Industries, in Forest City, Iowa, until he retired in
1980. He was a life
long member of the Clear Lake United Methodist Church.
He was also a member
of the American Legion.
After retirement he enjoyed his hobby of wood
turning. He was a charter
member of the American Association of Wood Turners. He
shared this talent
and many others with his family and friends. He also
enjoyed gardening and
raising irises. He will be greatly missed.
He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Betty Grell;
five daughters,
Judith Gordon and her husband Tennis, Rock Falls, Iowa,
Sharon Shuster and
her husband Paul, LaPorte, Minn., Deborah Hansen and her
husband Russell,
Collins, Iowa, Lori Severtson and her husband Mark,

Carmen Dora Dieterlen was born in Underwood, Ind. on
Oct. 27, 1908, the
daughter of John and Lounette (Watson) Dieterlen. They
lived briefly in
Illinois and then settled on a farm near Manly, Iowa.
She attended rural
school and Manly High School. She graduated from
Hamilton College in 1927.
She was united in marriage to Glen Vawter in 1928. He
preceded her in
death in 1966. She was employed by Ralph Lloyd Jones
Insurance Company and
was office manager of Culligan Soft Water for over 50
years, retiring in
January of 1993 at the age of 84. She was an efficient,
well-organized,
dedicated, loyal worker throughout her entire life.
She is survived by a sister, Oneita Miller, Clear
Lake; a niece, Jean
Miller, of Naples, Fla., two great nieces, Joy and Kim
Miller; a great
nephew, Rex Miller, and special friends Blackie and
Mavis Espinosa.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her
husband; a brother,
Russell; and a nephew, Larry Miller.

Arlotte Carlson
Arlotte O. Carlson Henderson, 91, of Garner, Iowa,
died Saturday, Jan.
27, 2001 at the Concord Care Center, Garner. Her funeral
was held Tuesday,
Jan. 30 at the United Methodist Church, Garner, with
the Rev. Kay Hooper
officiating. Music was provided by organist, Mary
Kopacek who accompanied
congregational hymns. Ushers were Marvin and Maynard
Schoneman. Pallbearers
were Dale Henderson, Dean Henderson, Gene Evans, Bill
Johnson, Leo Beebout
and Paul Willis. Interment was at Concord Township
Cemetery. Cataldo

Arlotte O. Muriel Carlson Henderson, the daughter of
Tobias T. and Olena
Anna Carlson was born March 18, 1909 at Leland, Iowa.
She attended school
at Leland, Waldorf Academy and Junior College in Forest
City and Drake
University in Des Moines where she graduated with a
degree in teaching. She
taught elementary school in Garner, Waterloo and Clear
Lake. On April 22,
1978 she was married to Paul Henderson at Salem Lutheran
Church in Lake
Mills. They made their home in Garner. Paul passed
away on Feb. 20, 1995.
Arlotte had resided at Concord Care Center since 1995.
She enjoyed sewing,
playing cards and traveling. She was a member of the
United Methodist
Church.
She is survived by three step-children, Dean
Henderson and his wife,
Linda, of River Falls, Wis., Dale Henderson and his
wife, Kay, of Plano,
Tex. and Gloria Beebout and her husband, Leo, of Ankeny,
Iowa; nine
step-grandchildren; several step-great grandchildren;
and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband,
Paul; two sisters, Thelma Gangsei Austinson and Esther
Evans Johnson; and five brothers, Clarence, Eddie,
Reuben, Selmer and Walter Carlson.
