Marvin K. (Pete) Peterson

Marvin K. (Pete) Peterson, 74, of rural Clear Lake, Iowa died Thursday, Aug. 2, 2001 at his family farm after a lengthy illness.

Services were held Saturday, Aug.4, 10 a.m. at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, Clear Lake, with the Rev. Thomas Healey, Chaplin of Hospice of North Iowa officiating.  Interment was in the Clear Lake Cemetery with Military Honors by the Clear Lake VFW Post # 04868.  Family suggest memorials to Marvin K. Peterson Memorial Fund.

Marvin was born March 12, 1927 in Mason City, Iowa the son of Andrew and Inga (Jorgenson) Peterson.  He attended County School #8 and then Clear Lake schools until he enlisted in the Navy.  He served in the South Pacific in World War II and in the Korean Conflict.  After his discharge he worked for North Western Portland Cement, Frederickson¹s Welding and then went into the trailer repair service at Atlas Motor Homes, Lifetime Motor homes, Forester Trailers and Paul¹s Mobile Homes.  In 1986, he opened North Iowa RV Repair at his family farm and worked until he retired due to his health.

In 1946, he married Margaret Miller and to that marriage, five children were born.  In 1960 he married Jean Elliott.  They enjoyed spending their winters near Austin, Texas. Marvin is survived by his loving wife Jean; daughters Margaret Dorenkamp of Hillsboro, Mo., Judy Smith and her husband, Ron, of Titusville, Fla., Patty Buland and her husband, Mike, of Monument, Colo., and Mary Lou Wyborny and her husband, Mick, of Mason City, Iowa.  He is also survived by his stepson, Steve Elliott, Clear Lake; stepdaughter, Karen Elliott-Green, both of Clear Lake; 13 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and one uncle, Holger Jorgenson, of Ventura, Iowa.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Andrew and Inga Peterson; and his son, William Peterson.


James R. (Jimmy) Lane

James R. (Jimmy) Lane, 37, of Clear Lake, Iowa died Tuesday, Aug. 14, 2001 in rural Clear Lake.  Funeral services were Saturday, Aug. 18, at Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, Clear Lake, with the Rev. Dennis Ganz officiating.  Interment was in Memorial Park Cemetery, Mason City, Iowa. Family suggests memorials to James R. Lane memorial fund.

Jimmy was born Oct. 5, 1963 in South St. Paul, Minn. the son of Jim and Jane (Pramer) Lane.  He attended Clear Lake High School.

Jimmy was manager of the Neighbors Place in Hanlontown.  He enjoyed golfing, being around people, making them laugh, singing  Karaoke, spending time with his family and most of all his nieces and nephews. 

Jimmy is survived by two sisters and one brother, Royce Monson and her husband, Wayne, Clear Lake, Bill Lane and his wife, Lisa, Mason City, and Jolene Thompson, Clear Lake;  a sister-in-law, Lucy Lane Conde, Puerto Rico; eight nieces and nephews, Eric and Melissa Monson, Clear Lake, John Thompson, New London, Minn., Jesse Mugan, Dalton Lane, and Joshua Lane, all of Mason City, Christina and Richie Lane, Puerto Rico; uncle and aunts Don and Jane Lane, Mesa, Az., Don and Jane Pramer, Arizona, Peg Kazebier, Redwood Falls, Minn., and Katie Lane, Clear Lake.  He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Richard Lane.


Peggy Lou Powell

Peggy Lou Powell, 64, of 815 6th Street SW, Mason City, Iowa, died Tuesday, Aug.14, 2001 at Mercy Medical Center North Iowa.

A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 25, at the Harvest Time Church, 804 North Tyler Ave., Mason City, with the Rev. George Johnson officiating. According to Mrs. Powell¹s wishes, her body has been cremated. Hogan Bremer Colonial Chapel, 126 3rd Street NE, is in charge of the arrangements. Memorials may be directed to the Peggy Powell Memorial Fund.

Peggy was born July 31, 1937 in Mason City, Iowa, the daughter of Lloyd and Cecil (Sutton) Lamb. She was a member of Harvest Time Church in Mason City who loved the Lord and being a part of her church community. Peggy opened her arms to everyone around her, she always enjoyed being with people, and was loved by everyone who knew her.

Peggy will be greatly missed by her four children; Michael Symes and his wife, Debi, of Mason City, Catherine Rand and her husband, Lee, of Garner, Iowa, Colleen Symes and her son, of Clear Lake, and Duke Powell and his wife, Jeannie, of Mason City; ten grandchildren, six great-granddaughters; nine brothers and sisters; and her lifelong companion, ³Shchtzee².

She was preceded in death by her parents.


Cecil Mae Broers

Cecil Mae Broers, 94, formerly of Clear Lake, died Thursday, Aug. 16, 2001, at the IOOF Home in Mason City, Iowa.  Funeral services were held Monday, Aug. 20, at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, Clear Lake, with the Rev. David Anderson of St. James Lutheran Church in Mason City officiating.  Interment was in the Clear Lake Cemetery.  The family suggests Memorials to the IOOF Home or Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit.

Cecil Mae (Walls) Broers, the daughter of Isaac and Lola (Sanders) Walls, was born on Jan. 3, 1907, at Modesto, Ill.  She was united in marriage to Emil J. Broers on Dec. 29, 1926, in Mason City, Iowa.  The couple farmed in rural Mason City. After retiring in 1970, the couple moved into Clear Lake.  Cecil was a wonderful homemaker who loved to take care of her children, and later, her grandchildren, great grandchildren, and great-great grandchildren.  She enjoyed cooking and gardening, and she took great pride in her flower garden.

Cecil is survived by two sons, Billy Broers and his wife, Marilyn, of Mason City, and Emil Broers Jr. and his wife, Anita, of Ventura; six grandchildren, Janell Hejlik and her husband, Brick, Darla Steenhard and her husband, Gary, Alesa Sweers and her husband, Ron, Twyla Doyle and her husband, Bryant, Troy Broers and his wife, Dana, and Tom Broers and his wife, Tanya; 14 great-grandchildren, and five great-great grandchildren.

  She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband in 1988; and five brothers, Howard, Russell, Leonard, Ralph, and Donald.


Charles N. Lenhart

Charles N. Lenhart, 91, of Clear Lake, died Friday, Aug. 17, at the Oakwood Care Center in Clear Lake.

A funeral mass was held Monday, Aug. 20, at St. Patrick¹s Catholic Church in Clear Lake with Msgr. Robert Hogan officiating.  Burial was in Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery in Mason City.

The family requests that memorials be directed to the Charles Lenhart memorial fund.

Charles Norbert Lenhart, the son of John and Christine (Nilles) Lenhart, was born on Oct. 23, 1909, in Clarion, Iowa.  He spent most of his childhood in South Dakota, where he also attended country schools.  He worked all over the country, and traveled a great deal before moving to Mason City, Iowa, where Charlie met Virginia Manning.  The couple was wed on Jan. 3, 1946, in Mason City. 

While living in Mason City, Charlie raised his family, and he worked for Gibbs Cook as a painter.  Charlie and Virginia moved to Clear Lake in 1968, and in 1984 Virginia passed away.  After retirement, Charlie opened the South Point Saw Shop, and remained active sharpening saws until 1990.  On Sept. 26, 1987, Charles was united in marriage with Barbara Verhuel at Clear Lake.  They remained in Clear Lake their entire married life.  Charlie was a member of St. Patrick¹s Catholic Church in Clear Lake, and he loved to spend his free time fishing, dancing, being a carpenter, and listening to or watching Minnesota Twins games.  He was indeed their biggest fan.

Those left to cherish his memory are his wife, Barbara Lenhart of Clear Lake; his children and their families, Linda Halvorsen and her husband, Tim of Forest City, their children, Benjamin, Daniel, and Genevieve Halvorsen; Sue Snyder and her husband, Bill of North Richland Hills, Texas, their children, Kristine Johnson and Victor Snyder; and Tom Lenhart and his wife, Coleen of Houston, Texas, their children, Erica, Brian, and April Lenhart; and a brother, Art Lenhart of Denver, Colo.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Virginia in 1984; two sisters, Sally Rotter and Betty Lenhart; and two brothers, John Lenhart and a brother in infancy.


Winola M. (Wagner) Prull

Winola M. (Wagner) Prull, of Geneva, Iowa, died Sunday, Aug. 12, 2001, at the Franklin General Nursing Facility in Hampton, Iowa. Her funeral was held at the Geneva United Methodist Church on Thursday, Aug. 16, with Pastor Jerry Hoff officiating. Burial was at Pleasant Hill Cemetery, rural Ackley, Iowa. Arrangements were completed by Sietsema Funeral Home in Ackley.

Winola Margaret Wagner was born in Wentworth, Wis., on July 30, 1916, the daughter of John H. and Ethel (LeValley) Wagner. When she was 10 years

old, the family moved to Faulkner, Iowa, where her father opened a blacksmith shop. She, and her three brothers, treasured their lives together in ³small town U.S.A.² She graduated from Geneva High School in 1934. Following her graduation, she graduated from Iowa State Normal School, Cedar Falls, Iowa. Her early career included teaching in Iowa¹s rural one room schools, near Ackley. On May 25, 1938, she was united in marriage to Clifford William Prull of Ackley, at the Ackley Methodist Church. They made their home on the farm, in rural Geneva, all their married life. To this union four children, three daughters and one son, were born, in four years.

She became a member of the Geneva United Methodist Church following her marriage. She served as church organist for over 30 years and served as choir director and Sunday school teacher for many years. She held the office of president in United Methodist Women for three different terms, and was involved in it until moving to Cedar Ridge Independent Living Facility, Iowa Falls, in November 1999. In May of 2001, she moved to the Franklin General Nursing Facility in Hampton. She was also one of the organizers of the Geneva Women¹s Club.

Her past artistic accomplishments include music composition (she composed over 20 songs), playing a wide variety of instruments including the piano, organ, harp, violin, accordion, and electronic keyboard. She also enjoyed raising orchids, flower gardening, flower arranging, ceramics (she made each of her children a complete set of dishes as a wedding present) and genealogy. She had also written poetry since she was 13 years old. In March of 2001, her children had a book of her poetry published ³Iowa¹s Beautiful Seasons.²

Those grateful for her life are four children, Sharon Abbas and her husband, Lyle, of Clear Lake, Gloria Burkle and her husband, Stan, of Nashua, Dale W. Prull and his friend, Janice Owen, of San Jose, Calif., and Aleyna Davisson and her husband, Larry, of DeSoto; as well as 11 grandchildren and spouses; 17 great-grandchildren; her brother, Robert Wagner of Duluth, Minn.; a sister-in-law, Lulu Kramer, of Portland, Or.; as well as six Wagner nieces and nephews and six Prull nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Clifford in Oct. 1991; two brothers, Ted and John Wagner; and a nephew, Darrell Wagner.


Julia Shane

Julia Shane, 85, of Austin, Minn, died Saturday, Aug.. 18, 2001, at Burr Oak Manor where she was a resident.

Julia was born Oct.. 23, 1915 in Austin to Frank and Anna (Steiner) Wendel. She had several positions of work throughout her lifetime including home care and clothing care. She was an auxiliary member of the Eagles Club, VFW and Moose. Julia spent several years serving ad working with the VFW and Moose and hen settled to one position with the Moose where she served several years. She had several positions in the kitchen area with her last position preparing bread baskets. Everyone there knew her as The Bread Lady. She has served the public in many different ways and is well praised by her peers and well liked by many people. Julia was the last born in her family. She was always called the baby and at that time her family spoke mostly German. By the time she entered school the schools were required to teach English so she learned as she went. She enjoyed growing flowers, gardening, cooking and collecting recipes of all kinds of foods. She has thousands of recipes dating back to the early 1900¹s with her favorite being homemade baked beans. In her younger years she liked going dancing at the Terp Ballroom. She was a lover of polka music and she played the accordion and the harmonica.

Survivors include two sons: Floyd Shuck and his wife, Eleanor, Lime Springs, Iowa, and Robert Shuck and his wife, Janice, Albert Lea; a daughter, Anna Potter and her husband, Randy, Havana, Ark.; nine grandchildren; twenty great-grandchildren; and five great-great grandchildren.

She is preceded in death by her first husband, Lloyd Shuck, her second husband, Floyd Shane; her parents; grandson Terry Shuck; three brothers, Joseph, Lawrence and Albert Wendel; five sisters, Mary Eve Wendel, Katherine Wendel, Marie Wendel, Lizzie Wendel, and Anne Katherine Wendel.

A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 22 at Queen of Angels Catholic Church with Father William Becker officiating. Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery.


Billy Lee Bergman Sr.

Billy Lee Bergman Sr., 66, of 717 North 13th Street, Clear Lake, died Friday, Aug. 24, 2001 at his home.

A funeral service was held Tuesday, August 28, at Ward Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, Clear Lake, with the Rev. David Gobeli officiating. 

Interment followed at Clear Lake Cemetery where military honors were conducted by the Clear Lake VFW Post. Memorials may be directed to the Billy Lee Bergman Memorial Fund, 717 North 13th Street, Clear Lake, Iowa, 50428.

Bill was born Nov.26, 1934 in Britt, Iowa, one of six children born to Bennie and Helen (Broome) Bergman.  He served in the United States Army from Dec. 1951 until  Dec. 1954 during the Korean Conflict.  Bill was united in marriage to Barbara (Bobbie) Ostendorf on Aug. 5, 1954 while stationed at Fort Campbell, Kentucky.  After his discharge from the service they lived in Clear Lake.  After that, they lived in southern Calif. for ten years and in Canon City, Colo. for four years.  They returned to Clear Lake where Bill worked at Curries Manufacturing until his retirement in 1997.  Bill loved to write poetry and make people laugh.  He also loved his God dearly.

Billy will be greatly missed by his wife, Bobbie, of Clear Lake; four children, Eddie Bergman and his special friend, Ann Sanchez,  Kevin Bergman and his wife, Debra, and Terry Bergman and his wife, Connie, all of Mason City, and Janie Bergman Bernhoft and her husband, Patrick, of Clear Lake; two daughters-in-law, Shelly McCauley of Hanlontown and Ronda Fredrickson of Tacoma, Wash.; ten grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Billy was preceded in death by a son, Billy L. Bergman Jr., otherwise known as ³Shorty²; his mother, Helen Austin; a brother, Randy; and a sister, Joann.


Willard Arthur Scott

Willard Arthur Scott, 84, of 4338 Wellington Hills Lane, Snellville, Ga., formerly Clear Lake, Iowa died Wed. Aug. 22, 2001 at the Embracing Hospice Unit, Snellville, Ga.   Services were held Saturday, August 25, at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, Clear Lake, Iowa with Bruce Collins officiating.  Interment was in the Clear Lake Cemetery.  Family suggest memorials to Willard Arthur Scott Memorial Fund.

Willard was born Aug. 17, 1917 in Cerro Gordo County, Iowa the son of 

Hans and Fronia (Fuller) Scott.  He was united in marriage to Yvonne Epple on Nov. 28, 1947 in Austin, Minn.  Willard worked for the City of Clear Lake for many years.

Willard is survived by his daughter, Lorraine Simmer, Snellville, Ga.; three grandchildren, Derek Simmer and his wife Angele,  Sean Simmer and 

Christopher Simmer; one great-granddaughter, Jordyn Simmer; three sisters, Leona Wilkinson, Evelyn Skjeie and Irene Kelly; and two brothers, Harold Scott and Raymond Scott. 

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Yvonne; one granddaughter, Grace Simmer; one brother, Eldo; and one sister, Esther. 


Soren Pershing Olson

Soren Pershing Olson, 82, Clear Lake, formerly Horseshoe Bend, Ark., died Monday, Aug. 27, 2001, at the Heritage Care Center in Mason City.

Memorial services were held Thursday, August 30, at Zion Lutheran Church, Clear Lake, with the Rev. Kermit Roisen officiating.  Inurnment was in the Clear Lake Cemetery with military graveside honors by the Clear Lake VFW.  Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, Clear Lake, was in charge of the arrangements. 

The family of Soren Pershing Olson has requested that memorial contributions be made to Hospice of North Iowa in Mason City, Zion Lutheran Church in Clear Lake, or to the Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church in Horseshoe Bend, Ark.

Soren was born on Sept. 25, 1918, on a farm near Scarville, Iowa, the son of Severt and Anna (Mykleby) Olson.  He was baptized in the Lime Creek Lutheran Church on Nov. 17, 1918, and was confirmed in the Eldora Lutheran Church in March 1934.  He graduated from the Bricelyn, Minn. high school in 1937.

Soren enlisted in the U.S. Army on Feb. 4, 1942, and honorably served his country until his discharge on Nov. 19, 1945.  He was a member of the 15th Cavalry Reconnaissance Squadron during World War II, serving 29 months in Central Europe as a mail clerk.

He was united in marriage to Helen Lomen on Sept. 1, 1946, in the Zion Lutheran Church in Clear Lake.  Soren was employed in the Clear Lake Buttertop Bakery before buying his own bakery in Hampton, and in 1967 he bought a bakery in Boone, Iowa.  He retired in 1980, when Helen and Soren moved to Horseshoe Bend, Ark.  They moved back to Clear Lake the last of October 2000.  Soren became a resident of Heritage Care Center in Mason City the end of March of this year, having been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease.

Soren loved golfing, fishing, gardening, playing bridge and riding horseback.  He was an active member of the Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church in Horseshoe Bend.  He also was a member of the Kiwanis Club for nearly 40 years.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Helen Olson, of Clear Lake; their two daughters, Audrey Knight and her husband, Jack, of Boone, and Susan Knippel and her husband, David, of Ames, Iowa. He has two granddaughters, Christine Knight of Ames and her two daughters, Kari and Cassie Olson, and Angie Oppedahl, wife of Jon Oppedahl of Cedar Rapids and their daughters, Anna and Laura.  He also has two grandsons, Eric and Daniel Knippel, as well as four step-grandchildren and four step-great-grandchildren.

Other surviving family members are Soren¹s two brothers, James A. Olson and his wife, Audrey, of Blue Earth, Minn., and Marvin O. Olson and his wife, Norma, of Des Moines; and several nieces and nephews, as well as other relatives and friends.

Soren was preceded in death by his parents, and one infant great-grandson, Grant Oppedahl.
